Summary

No light。 No air。 No escape。
Hundreds of feet beneath the ocean's surface, a graveyard waits。。。

Years ago, the SS Arcadia vanished without a trace during a routine voyage。 Though a strange, garbled emergency message was broadcast, neither the ship nor any of its crew could be found。 Sixty years later, its wreck has finally been discovered more than three hundred miles from its intended course。。。a silent graveyard deep beneath the ocean's surface, eagerly waiting for the first sign of life。

Cove and her dive team have been granted permission to explore the Arcadia's rusting hull。 Their purpose is straightforward: examine the wreck, film everything, and, if possible, uncover how and why the supposedly unsinkable ship vanished。

But the Arcadia has not yet had its fill of death, and something dark and hungry watches from below。 With limited oxygen and the ship slowly closing in around them, Cove and her team will have to fight their way free of the unspeakable horror now desperate to claim them。

Because once they're trapped beneath the ocean's waves, there's no going back。

What really brought the Arcadia to the deepest part of the ocean? Not for the faint of heart, this deeply atmospheric novel pulled me under immediately。 I felt like I was sinking into the thrilling and almost claustrophobic setting myself as I was reading; it was completely captivating and encompassing as a reader。 This author also has this fascinating talent to end her novels in an uplifting and hopeful way, even though they are classified technically as horror novels typically。 I absolutely loved this (along with everything else I've read by this author)!Sarah M。 / Marathon County Public Library Find this book in our library catalog。 。。。more

I had minimal expectations on starting this book, thinking it to be something like Into The Drowing Deep by Mira Grant (another 5 star read!), and although obvious similarities are there (big ship, hidden things in the depths, etc) the plot lines are different and unique enough to keep you engaged until the end。 I loved it。 It keeps you engaged, throwing twists and turns and making the characters really human。 The characters are set up beautifully, and the mystery of Arcadia is waiting to be unr I had minimal expectations on starting this book, thinking it to be something like Into The Drowing Deep by Mira Grant (another 5 star read!), and although obvious similarities are there (big ship, hidden things in the depths, etc) the plot lines are different and unique enough to keep you engaged until the end。 I loved it。 It keeps you engaged, throwing twists and turns and making the characters really human。 The characters are set up beautifully, and the mystery of Arcadia is waiting to be unravelled… 。。。more

This book made me deeply uncomfortable and claustrophobic, I had to take a pause every 50 pages just to get rid of that feeling。 I absolutely love Darcy Coates- she can create such an haunting atmosphere with her words。 I know I will enjoy any book she writes and I loved this one too ! This got me outta my reading slump, From Below is perfectly spooky and entertaining。

DNF at 47%。 Ok。 I don’t understand the so many high ratings。 The 1928 story line is fucking chefs kiss。 But the present one drags and drags。 Harland is fine。 But the others, holy shit, they are dumb as hell。 As far as I have read, Aiden makes dumb decisions (lies about oxygen when his LIFE depends on it), Cove makes dumb decisions (lets Aiden come, keeps listening to the rat Roy, and doing the most risky dumb shit)。 Like I know you want shots for the documentary but it won’t even exist if you ar DNF at 47%。 Ok。 I don’t understand the so many high ratings。 The 1928 story line is fucking chefs kiss。 But the present one drags and drags。 Harland is fine。 But the others, holy shit, they are dumb as hell。 As far as I have read, Aiden makes dumb decisions (lies about oxygen when his LIFE depends on it), Cove makes dumb decisions (lets Aiden come, keeps listening to the rat Roy, and doing the most risky dumb shit)。 Like I know you want shots for the documentary but it won’t even exist if you are dead 350 feet below the ocean surface girly。 And for fucks sake, someone tell me why everyone listens to giga chad ROY。 This dumb idiot from the amount I have read has risked literally everyone。 Every time he says “relax” or “chill” my blood boils and I want to drown him。 Like jeez dude, get a hint, this ain’t no place to act macho。 My boi, follow the leader。 So stupid。 And Cove like smiles at him and listens。 Girl, stop him。 He is a big fat bafoon with no brain。 And Hestie or whatever leaves the fucking group to explore alone。 Omg I need to BREATHE。 These are supposed to be trained professionals with experience。 Vanna needs to literally do her job and say we need to go。 Overall, so frustrating。 Really wanted to finish the 1928 plot but I can’t with this amount of stupidity。 Oh look I’m supposed to stay close to the group and calm because I almost died in this room and had no way out。 No but I’m going to randomly open doors rather than find a way out。 Then I’m going to panic and lose my oxygen reserves。 Oh please。 Someone get Roy a goddamn brain。 The present plot was soooo slow。 There are still no zombies in sight。 Like GET UP, zombies, grow a backbone and chase。 Stop sleeping and running away。 All I read was silt this and that。 Get on with it man。 Sad I never experienced the water or mermaid zombies thingies。 Whatever。 Can’t be assed to read more of Roy ruining things and Cove smiling like idiot and following like sheep。 I’m done。 And you’re done。 。。。more

Creepy! Claustrophobic! But really hard to put down。 This author really knows how to build up the unexplained to chilling ending。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Sort of a slow read for me。 I think this would make a good movie。 Major plot points from the end—don’t read if you don’t want to know!It got a bit unbelievable to me near the end, when Aiden went back down。 Things are replaceable, people aren’t。 I was glad that Vanna made it out, because I would have been really upset if she had died because she was better off dead than living without Abby。

I feel like this book could have and should have been about 50-100 pages shorter。 It seemed like a lot of it was repetitive descriptions of the same things。

At 300 pages this could have been a propulsive, satisfying story, but Coates just spends too much time building suspense and atmosphere where it's not needed, similar to the formula she used for Gallows Hill。 The reader knows there's a haunting of some kind and that the protagonist is exploring an area that is likely to contain dead bodies, yet we spend hundreds of pages building up to the reveal of a corpse and another hundred waiting for the main characters to figure out that it's connected to At 300 pages this could have been a propulsive, satisfying story, but Coates just spends too much time building suspense and atmosphere where it's not needed, similar to the formula she used for Gallows Hill。 The reader knows there's a haunting of some kind and that the protagonist is exploring an area that is likely to contain dead bodies, yet we spend hundreds of pages building up to the reveal of a corpse and another hundred waiting for the main characters to figure out that it's connected to the unexplainable occurrences they're enduring。 The basic idea behind the story and its setting are like candy to me, so I still enjoyed the book, even at 450+ pages, but I'm giving an extra star just because I love underwater supernatural stories。 Also because the ending features what is hopefully an intentional nod to the great novel by Michael Crichton, Sphere, which resembles From Below in some ways。 。。。more

I need more horror books set in the deep sea! "From Below" was a very enertaining read。 The characters were well-rounded, and I felt as if I myself was immersed in the cold dark waters with them。However, it could've easily been at least 50 pages shorter - there was so many repetitions and reminders that we didn't need! Why did he admit his involvement so late in the book, even though he felt guilty and regretted it in the first dive already? Why didn't he admit it earlier, after seeing all of the dangers of the ship? I'm not really confident that this particular thread of the story was consistent。(hide spoiler)] 。。。more

I have been doing, if you will excuse the pun, a deep dive into space and deep-sea horror recently and two titles came up in my search: Dead Silence and Coates' From Below。 Are these the same book? Both have female protagonists on a desperate last mission to a mysterious, and possibly haunted, luxury liner that had been lost and recently re-found。 Add a rag-tag crew with increasing paranoia。 Sweeping staircases, creepy messages on the walls, half-seen shadows in the darkness。 Even the discovery o I have been doing, if you will excuse the pun, a deep dive into space and deep-sea horror recently and two titles came up in my search: Dead Silence and Coates' From Below。 Are these the same book? Both have female protagonists on a desperate last mission to a mysterious, and possibly haunted, luxury liner that had been lost and recently re-found。 Add a rag-tag crew with increasing paranoia。 Sweeping staircases, creepy messages on the walls, half-seen shadows in the darkness。 Even the discovery of the role of corporate greed in the passengers' misery。 Honestly, there are a LOT of parallels。 So your interest in both of these books comes down to this: do you like creepy haunted house stories that take place in zero oxygen environments? Yes? Then these books are for you!I did like the writing slightly better in From Below, and it is a much longer book so if you want a quick read to scratch the itch, Dead Silence might get you there quicker, but Coates’ imagery was much more haunting and uncomfortable。 Both books are weakest when it comes to their characters and their development。 But that is more a personal preference; I am here for the horror not the relationships so it wasn’t too much of a turn off for me。 I recommend this From Below for people who like deep sea/ unexplored places- related horror。 。。。more

A breakneck thrill ride of a novel that combines sunken ghost ships, grisly supernatural legacies, and the terrors of the deep to create one hell of a horror page-turner。 If you've ever watched a movie like Ghost Ship or played Man of Medan and found them disappointing, From Below scratches a similar itch in literary form without losing a cinematic edge。 Highly recommended this one as a summer read。 A breakneck thrill ride of a novel that combines sunken ghost ships, grisly supernatural legacies, and the terrors of the deep to create one hell of a horror page-turner。 If you've ever watched a movie like Ghost Ship or played Man of Medan and found them disappointing, From Below scratches a similar itch in literary form without losing a cinematic edge。 Highly recommended this one as a summer read。 。。。more

definitely recommend reading this book。Cove Waimarie and her crew Sean Rov wrangler, Roy camera/ audio/ lights guy, Aidan the chef/ assistant, Hettie marine biologist, Vanna diving specialist are on board the skipjack owned by historian Devereux on the Gulf of Bothnia between Sweden and Finland to film and explore the missing shipwreck of the ocean liner Acadia that disappeared nearly a hundred years ago no one knows what happened only that something happened on the routine voyage that lead them to be over three hundred miles off course before sinking。 They’re doing a documentary for Vivitech productions and need at least twelve hours of footage to meet their end of the contract or they want get paid, Cove desperately needs this to be a success because she had to file bankruptcy when her father got sick and passed away。 The last contact the Arcadia had was a cryptic distress message about they are in the walls。 Although coves group has had some hiccups getting here, with Sean’s Rovs that were supposed to check out the wreck aren’t working making their time even shorter since they have to dive and be down there to get the twelve hours of footage。 The first dive All but Sean and devereux go diving, they’re the first team to see the Arcadia shipwreck and are excited to get answers on the mystery of the shipwreck, while they’re diving sean is paranoid that someone sabotaged his robots so they would have to dive themselves he suspects Roy and searches the others belongings looking for evidence however he mistakes the bunks and finds a journal of Vanna’s with disturbing notes on death and drowning and becomes concerned that she is going to hurt the others, on the dive they see all the doors open in the hallways, they swear they see movements creepy messages on the walls in the dining hall they find a well preserved body and return to the surface hettie explains because of the location there’s low oxygen for humans natural bacteria to decompose only a slight decomposition but not enough for bodies to rot。 Meanwhile throughout the book it goes back to 1928 the last week and half leading up to the ship sinking and tells of the crews experience, weird sounds in the walls, a mummified body found behind a wall, the deteriorating mentality of the crew and passengers from people milling themselves to burrowing disease digging holes in the ship and hiding in them until dying, paranoia runs amuck and the captain kills a crew member。 Sean goes to cove with his concerns of vanna。 Cove talks to vanna and learns that it’s a journal her therapist told her to write to deal with the recent death of her girlfriend who drowned while they were in underwater caves and drowned she keeps her secret and defends Vanna to Sean who is frustrated。 On the second dive someone has cut vannas dive line and they separate into teams to cover my ground and footage Cove, Roy and Aidan on one team Hettie and Vanna on the other more chilling messages found written Hettie finds bodies strapped to beds and unties one and sees the body move causing her to have a seizure they rush her back to the surface。 Sean publicly blames vanna accusing her of hurting hettie and blurts out Coves bankruptcy secret。 On the third and what is to be the final dive all the bodies truly come alive and try to stop them from leaving Vanna and Aidan, and Roy and Cove fight their ways off the ship although deverux gets Aidan to get something from the hold he saw on the footage earlier before the attacks happen they all manage to get out and use spare tanks for air。 They realise the creatures were hibernating by the lack of the oxygen and the recent dives have introduce enough oxygen that woke them, they don’t want them to leave on the ship, they make it to the surface and when cove discovers he ignored her safety rules by going to the lower areas to the holding to get a fabric sample with Pt inscribed on it he storms off after asking if they saw any jewellery on him。 Devereux and hey tie explains that the Arcadia was shipping some fabrics from a company Prescott tiles that had a major scandal that the fabric they made thinner and softer also caused mass suicides and paranoia and hallucinations in the workers who made the product and strongly believe that this heavily contributed to the Arcadia crew and passengers going insane hettie also believes that the mummified body needed the fear that the fabric caused in the residents to harm them。 They realise that Aidan is missing Devereux tells them he’s gone looking for the ring he had on a chain in secret that he was planning to ask his girlfriend Penny to marry him, they see equipment and a dry suit is missing so Roy, Vanna and Cove dive again to save him, Sean apologises to Vanna for his behaviour that since his rovs being sabotaged he’s been paranoid Roy speaks up and tells him he removed the chips in the rovs because he wanted to dive the three days to explore and not through a camera screen and tells him where he put the missing chips。 While down their they find Aidan and realise the creatures are afraid of the lights and Sean gets the rov online and saves them from the ship。 They all make it back to the surface。 They discuss they can’t let anyone see the footage of the bodies coming alive because people will come exploring which is exactly what the ship wants more oxygen。 Sean and Devereux edit the footage and luckily with the rov footage they scrape by the twelve hours of footage to keep their contract, they swear not to tell about what really happened here, five months later the documentary is about to be revealed they petitioned the government to make the Arcadia shipwreck a grave site banning all diving to the wreck because of bodies on board and the living relatives of the families involved with this wreck。 Aidan messages them cheerfully that he proposed to his girlfriend Penny and she said yes。 Cove is looking forward to living her life one day at a time。 。。。more
