Summary

Mightily Oats has not picked a good time to be priest。 He thought he was there for a simple little religious ceremony。 Now he’s caught up in a war between vampires and witches, and he’s not sure there is a right side。 There’s the witches — Agnes, Magrat, Nanny Ogg, and the formidable Granny Weatherwax… And the vampires: the stakes are high but they’re intelligent — not easily got rid of with a garlic enema or going to the window and saying “I don’t know about you, but isn’t it a bit stuffy in here?” They’ve got style and fancy waistcoats。 They’re out of the casket and want a bite of the future。

Prachett once again proves he was one of the funniest writers to sit at a keyboard。 How a Middle Aged man writes women so well I will never know。 We all need that little inner voice who is not afraid to take risks。 Anything with his witches I will always lap up!

Made me laugh, made me think, left me wanting more of these characters。 What a great book to be my 100th book finished this year!

this was my favorite book in the witches sub-series。 it was funny and well-paced, but wasn’t a total, almost scene for scene rip off of pop culture the way some of the other books in the witches series are。 there were also a couple moments that terry pratchett definitely borrowed from good omens, which was a fun easter egg。 my favorite aspect of this book was the fact that the main vampire is in love with agnes because he can’t hear her thoughts, which is the exact reason why edward loves bella this was my favorite book in the witches sub-series。 it was funny and well-paced, but wasn’t a total, almost scene for scene rip off of pop culture the way some of the other books in the witches series are。 there were also a couple moments that terry pratchett definitely borrowed from good omens, which was a fun easter egg。 my favorite aspect of this book was the fact that the main vampire is in love with agnes because he can’t hear her thoughts, which is the exact reason why edward loves bella in twilight (and this was written before twilight so lowkey stephanie meyer stole from terry pratchett??) again though, there was a lot of fatphobia and mean and unnecessary comments about agnes。 i guess it fits with the times, since this was written in the 90s, but it’s just such an old joke and really doesn’t do anything to further the plot。 。。。more

Love the Witches, and this addition to the Discworld series does a nice job complicating the connections across generations。 Plus there's an amusing take on religion; the vampires tend to be a bit flat, but very close to top tier Pratchett。 Love the Witches, and this addition to the Discworld series does a nice job complicating the connections across generations。 Plus there's an amusing take on religion; the vampires tend to be a bit flat, but very close to top tier Pratchett。 。。。more

The last Witches novel in the Discworld series grabs you by the throat, just like the title says。 When the Magpyr family of vampires comes to take over Lancre, they test the skills of Nanny Ogg, Magrat Garlick, and Agnes Nitt/Perdita。 Meanwhile Granny Weatherwax is nowhere to be found。 Pratchett satirizes vampire fiction, drawing from both literature and film。 Some of it is very clever and amusing, but sometimes the descriptions of the characters and their strengths and weaknesses get repetitive The last Witches novel in the Discworld series grabs you by the throat, just like the title says。 When the Magpyr family of vampires comes to take over Lancre, they test the skills of Nanny Ogg, Magrat Garlick, and Agnes Nitt/Perdita。 Meanwhile Granny Weatherwax is nowhere to be found。 Pratchett satirizes vampire fiction, drawing from both literature and film。 Some of it is very clever and amusing, but sometimes the descriptions of the characters and their strengths and weaknesses get repetitive and you find yourself saying,"Ok yes, we get it。" and wishing things would just move on。 On the plus side, there are some delightful new characters, significant character development for some of our returning favourites, and the final battle is truly epic。 。。。more

I think that this is by far the best of the Granny Weatherwax books。 And look—if you’ve never read a Discworld book, DON’T start with this one。 Go back to the beginning, and start there。 You won’t regret it。

I had a really tough time getting into this book and I’m not sure if it’s the book’s fault or mine。 I spent so much of it asking “wait, what?” or “why?” and hoping things would come together in the end。 Unfortunately, while some do, a lot of the elements really don’t。 I’m not sure what the Nac Mac Feegle had to do with anything or the entire phoenix plot line was about。 With all of that said, there were still a ton of really funny jokes and really clever ideas and commentary embedded into the pl I had a really tough time getting into this book and I’m not sure if it’s the book’s fault or mine。 I spent so much of it asking “wait, what?” or “why?” and hoping things would come together in the end。 Unfortunately, while some do, a lot of the elements really don’t。 I’m not sure what the Nac Mac Feegle had to do with anything or the entire phoenix plot line was about。 With all of that said, there were still a ton of really funny jokes and really clever ideas and commentary embedded into the plot that kept me going。 Ultimately, I think reading a Granny Weatherwax book where she’s moping and off camera for the vast majority of the book is already setting things up for failure。 。。。more

All the blurb about Discworld, mentions vampyres so I was waiting patiently for them to turn up。The title of the book was a big clue to the topic of the book。Witches and vampyres have a testy co-existence, even Granny Weatherwax's grandmother Alison had killed the original Count [the nicer of the two head vampyres] fifty years earlier。It was good to have Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg, [Queen] Magret Garlick and Agnes Nitt working together。 I adored the scene where Scraps [Igor's dog, with two tai All the blurb about Discworld, mentions vampyres so I was waiting patiently for them to turn up。The title of the book was a big clue to the topic of the book。Witches and vampyres have a testy co-existence, even Granny Weatherwax's grandmother Alison had killed the original Count [the nicer of the two head vampyres] fifty years earlier。It was good to have Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg, [Queen] Magret Garlick and Agnes Nitt working together。 I adored the scene where Scraps [Igor's dog, with two tails] bothered Death so much with his constant slavering, playing with his scythe and attention seeking, that he sent him back to Igor。 。。。more

Carpe Jugulum reminded me a little bit of Witches Abroad, in that it was not the funniest book of the Witches series, but one with lots of worlbuilding。 The lore around the vampires (vampyres, to be modern) was very interesting and made the world feel larger。 Our characters also went to Uberwald and I think exploring other countries is really what I find most fascinating about the Discworld。 I guess it’s a good thing I have now reached the point to start other series, which might scratch that ex Carpe Jugulum reminded me a little bit of Witches Abroad, in that it was not the funniest book of the Witches series, but one with lots of worlbuilding。 The lore around the vampires (vampyres, to be modern) was very interesting and made the world feel larger。 Our characters also went to Uberwald and I think exploring other countries is really what I find most fascinating about the Discworld。 I guess it’s a good thing I have now reached the point to start other series, which might scratch that exploration itch。I also really enjoyed the dynamic of having a new witch in the group, even though the coven doesn’t really have a clear structure now。 Agnes/Perdita is a very fun character and I enjoyed seeing some development for her。I don’t know if I’ll see some of the witches in other series of the Discworld, but I sure hope so! Again, I find Terry Pratchett's books on the Witches to be the best。 Nice to see Magrat back in action, but also the additional focus on Agnes/Perdita。 Finally get to see (modern) vampires take more of a center role in the series。 Didn't like one technicality at the end, but otherwise a pretty solid novel。 Again, I find Terry Pratchett's books on the Witches to be the best。 Nice to see Magrat back in action, but also the additional focus on Agnes/Perdita。 Finally get to see (modern) vampires take more of a center role in the series。 Didn't like one technicality at the end, but otherwise a pretty solid novel。 。。。more

。。。more

I wouldn't have expected to enjoy a vampire edition of Discworld: vampires seem to have been thoroughly exhausted by popular culture in recent decades, but this was a surprisingly good enjoyable entry in the series。 No doubt this is because I do very much enjoy books which explore faith, and Carpe Jugulum's Mightily Oats, is arguably my favourite single-book Pratchett character yet (competing only, fittingly, with his prophet Brutha)。 It helps that I am a bit of an Agnes fan, although it would b I wouldn't have expected to enjoy a vampire edition of Discworld: vampires seem to have been thoroughly exhausted by popular culture in recent decades, but this was a surprisingly good enjoyable entry in the series。 No doubt this is because I do very much enjoy books which explore faith, and Carpe Jugulum's Mightily Oats, is arguably my favourite single-book Pratchett character yet (competing only, fittingly, with his prophet Brutha)。 It helps that I am a bit of an Agnes fan, although it would be nice if Pratchett could lay off the size jokes with her。 Granny's plotline made no sense, which lessened the emotional heft, but she got some good lines, so that was okay。 The harder he tries to make her noble the less so she seems, I do wish he'd leave it alone。 I didn't love the vampire bits, but Igor was a wonder, so that sort of made up for it。 。。。more
