Summary

Confront the spectre of failure, the wraith of social media, and other supernatural enemies of the author

Tom Gauld returns with his wittiest and most trenchant collection of literary cartoons to date。 Perfectly composed drawings are punctuated with the artist’s signature brand of humour, hitting high and low。 After all, Gauld is just as comfortable taking jabs at Jane Eyre and Game of Thrones

Some particularly favoured targets include the pretentious procrastinating novelist, the commercial mercenary of the dispassionate editor, the willful obscurantism of the vainglorious poet。 Quake in the presence of the stack of bedside books as it grows taller! Gnash your teeth at the ever-moving deadline that the writer never meets! Quail before the critic’s incisive dissection of the manuscript! And most importantly, seethe with envy at the paragon of creative productivity!

Revenge of the Librarians contains even more murders, drubbings, and castigations than The Department of Mind-Blowing Theories, Baking For Kafka, or any other collections of mordant scribblings by the inimitably excellent Gauld。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 This could be subtitled “Reading and Writing Books in the Time of COVID。” Gauld is a bibliophile’s cartoonist whose work frequently appears in The Guardian and The New Scientist, and his latest collection will appeal to anyone who loves books。 Now that I think about it, Gauld’s work reminds me a lot of Jasper Fforde’s Thursday Next series in terms of his clear love of books, riffs on the literary canon, and sheer silliness — but with Fforde’s zaniness turned down a few notches。Hiding this review This could be subtitled “Reading and Writing Books in the Time of COVID。” Gauld is a bibliophile’s cartoonist whose work frequently appears in The Guardian and The New Scientist, and his latest collection will appeal to anyone who loves books。 Now that I think about it, Gauld’s work reminds me a lot of Jasper Fforde’s Thursday Next series in terms of his clear love of books, riffs on the literary canon, and sheer silliness — but with Fforde’s zaniness turned down a few notches。Hiding this review behind a spoiler tag at the request of the publisher until the book’s publication in October。 Many thanks to NetGalley and Drawn + Quarterly for providing an advance copy of the book in exchange for an honest review! 。。。more

So fun! This is a book that will go nicely with Lisa Brown's Long Story Short。 Clever and thought-provoking。 The panels are fun, humorous, and spot on。 It features scenarios that wil appeal to readers, writers, and lovers of cats and books。 More of this please! Thanks to the publisher for the advance access。 So fun! This rating/review is based on a review copy from Netgalley and Drawn & Quarterly。Holy cow, am I ever in the pocket for Tom Gauld。 This book is an outstanding addition to his already wonderful oeuvre of witty, bookish comics。 There are so many great jokes, and it's maybe the first book I've read where the COVID stuff hasn't made me cringe。 Really funny and highly recommended! This book took me by surprise-in the best of ways! Smart, sarcastic, funny…。if you are a lover of books you will love this graphic novel。 Actually I am not sure if novel is the right term…。it is a series of vignettes that address the frustrations of writers, the maddening communication with publishers, the passion of readers all in humorous small bites with charming, simple drawings。 I laughed as so many of the drawings and could personally relate to all of them。 This is an original book and wou This book took me by surprise-in the best of ways!
