Summary

Fans of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina will love diving into the mysterious and witchy world of award-nominated creator Sweeney Boo。 Enchanting full-color illustrations will be sure to charm readers as they explore the halls of Younwity's Institute of Magic and the forbidden forest that lies beyond。

In the days leading up to Samhain, the veil between the world of the dead and the living is at its thinnest。

One day, everything was exactly as it was supposed to be。 And the next, the closest thing Abby ever had to a sister, Noreen, was just… gone。

Distracted by the annual preparations for the Samhain festival, Abby’s classmates are quick to put Noreen’s disappearance aside。 The Coven will find her, Abby’s friends say。 They have it under control。

But Abby can’t let it go。 Soon a search for answers leads her down a rabbit hole that uncovers more secrets than Abby can handle。 As mounting evidence steers her toward the off-limits woods that surround the academy, she begins to see that Noreen’s disappearance mysteriously has a lot in common with another girl who went missing all those years ago…

4。5 rounded upThank you to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to read an arc of this title! I really enjoyed this witchy comic! There seemed to be some definite nods to Harry Potter but the school within this book has enough individuality to make it stand apart from Hogwarts。 The story was well written and the twists weren't easily predicted。 The artwork is nice, with a few panels I'd describe as gorgeous。 This is a must read for anyone into witchy things and graphic novels! 4。5 rounded upThank you to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to read an arc of this title! I was really excited for this one: A Witchy mystery, a snarky talking cat, a bit of LGBT+ representation (which is always a good thing), and a Samhainesque vibe。。。 We ARE getting into That Time of Year, after all。 So as soon as I saw this on the Waiting-To-Be-Processed Shelf at my library, I knew I had to borrow it for the afternoon。 The reality。。。 Although the artwork was gorgeous and the idea for the story was fab, I didn't love the book as much as I hoped I would。 The plot was actually pretty I was really excited for this one: A Witchy mystery, a snarky talking cat, a bit of LGBT+ representation (which is always a good thing), and a Samhainesque vibe。。。 We ARE getting into That Time of Year, after all。 So as soon as I saw this on the Waiting-To-Be-Processed Shelf at my library, I knew I had to borrow it for the afternoon。 The reality。。。 Although the artwork was gorgeous and the idea for the story was fab, I didn't love the book as much as I hoped I would。 The plot was actually pretty predictable and I guessed the culprit long before they were revealed。 Perhaps my Scooby Senses are just that good。 Hmm。。。 Mostly, it was a bit too much of a Harry Potter vibe for my taste。 I mean: A Witchcraft school, a Forbidden Forest, nefarious goings-on and a tricksy Culprit that would have gotten away with it too if not for a group of Meddling Kids。。。 I was hoping for something more along the lines of Camp Spirit or Mooncakes。 Something not so。。。 Hogwart-ish。It was still enjoyable, though。 。。。more

ARC provided by Netgalley in exchange for an honest review。One of my favorite settings for any type of media is magic schools。 Maybe it's because I grew up a Harry Potter nerd and I've recently started rereading them, but there's something about the idea of young people learning how to use magic that's just absolutely irresistable and this graphic novel is no exception。 We have magical school filled with young witches, a dangerous magical forest filled with demons, and a student that's gone miss ARC provided by Netgalley in exchange for an honest review。One of my favorite settings for any type of media is magic schools。 Maybe it's because I grew up a Harry Potter nerd and I've recently started rereading them, but there's something about the idea of young people learning how to use magic that's just absolutely irresistable and this graphic novel is no exception。 We have magical school filled with young witches, a dangerous magical forest filled with demons, and a student that's gone missing。 Obviously, this is a recipe for success。 The plot doesn't disappoint, but the main sell of this one is the art。 Sweeney Boo is incredibly talented and the illustrations are absolutely to die for。 I'm eagerly anticipating her future works because I absolutely could not get enough of the gorgeous art。 Even the way she styled the checkered patterns on the skirts was so cool and I absolutely loved it。 5 stars for sure。 。。。more

A quick read graphic novel。 Beautiful illustrations, a story of witches and trying to “Find your family” & friendship。 A little choppy here and there, kind of hard to follow along and wrapped up too quickly for my taste。 Should be 3。5 stars

A big thank you to NetGalley and HarperCollins Children's Books for the digital ARC of 'Over My Dead Body' by Sweeney Boo。So, I will admit, I was a more focused on looking at the description of the book that I somehow missed that it was a Graphic Novel。 It was very pleasant surprise when I opened up the story in app at 3am when I was having trouble sleeping。 I've always been an avid collector of comics, and before teaching I used to assist at comic conventions - it's always exciting for me to se A big thank you to NetGalley and HarperCollins Children's Books for the digital ARC of 'Over My Dead Body' by Sweeney Boo。So, I will admit, I was a more focused on looking at the description of the book that I somehow missed that it was a Graphic Novel。 It was very pleasant surprise when I opened up the story in app at 3am when I was having trouble sleeping。 I've always been an avid collector of comics, and before teaching I used to assist at comic conventions - it's always exciting for me to see stories that are NOT the typical superhero story。The things I loved:- Each chapter began with a few lines of 'Alone' by Edgar Allan Poe。- The artwork, and subject matter。 I always love books that deal with magic - no matter what form they're in。- The dark secrets that Abigail uncovers, that have been hidden for so long。My only issue:- There was so much story to tell, and I wanted more backstory。。。 more detail。 The story felt a little rushed。 This was a graphic novel that could have been better as a multiple volume story。。。 not a single volume 240-ish page read。Overall though, I loved it, and wish there was more to continue reading。 This is definitely something I want to add to my home library, and classroom library。 5/5*Review will be posted to Goodreads closer to release date。 。。。more

Magic school graphic novel! Let's be fair, it's hard to get into this genre without echoes of THAT series, and there's a bit of that here。 A lot of British/New England vibes in the clothing and architectural design, but thank goodness the CHARACTERS have wider representation。 The plot and schemes are also a fair bit more。。。bloody。 This MIGHT be because you can see everything, instead of just reading about injuries, but there's a higher sense of peril in this comic。Abby is our focus of the story, Magic school graphic novel! 10/10 for the best witch-y Halloween spoops vibes in a graphic novel in a while! The art in Over My Dead Body is Gorgeous, full color, jewel tone-ish palate, intricately drawn world and characters, we are so spoiled for loveliness! I liked the story, but it did fall a bit flat for me in the character development area。 Everyone just feels a bit cardboard or over exaggerated。 Maybe this would have worked a bit better as a long form novel where we may have gotten more insight into each character。 10/10 for the best witch-y Halloween spoops vibes in a graphic novel in a while! I’m not sure if this is intended to be a standalone, but it seems like it’s open to the possibility of a sequel, which I would gladly welcome。I highly recommend Over My Dead Body to anyone who wants a witchy graphic novel with a mystery at the center of it。Thank you to NetGalley and HarperCollins Children’s Books (Harperalley) for allowing me to have an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

We follow Abby, a witch senior foundling of Younwitty, and her familiar, Seymour。 While she likes to sleep in and is often late getting to where she needs to go, no one can say she’s not 100% devoted to her friends。 It’s why she’s willing to face getting kicked out of the coven if it means she did everything she could to find Noreen。 I love Abby and Seymour and would love it if we got a second installment, but it appears that this will most likely be a stand alone book。Other than Abby and her familiar, we also see a lot of her friends, Goldie and Enver。 While they are both devoted friends, neither are willing to put their necks on the line when it looks like the investigation is way out of their league。 We also frequently see Abby’s roommate, Violet, who strongly dislikes Abby。 There’s also the school staff, which includes Goldie’s father and the strange groundskeeper who unintentionally spooks many of the students。 One of the things that I love about the characters is that there is a lot of character growth throughout the story, especially for a few characters in particular。 I also found that many of them were relatable in different ways, making them even more realistic。I did find that there were some similarities to Harry Potter。 There’s the forbidden forest that everyone is banned from stepping foot in, a groundskeeper that seemingly doesn’t like anyone, ghosts that will go out of their way to bother students if they are out after curfew, and a protagonist who is willing to stick their nose where it doesn’t seem to belong if it means it’ll help someone in addition to solving a mystery。However, that’s where the similarities begin and end。 The remainder of the book is different down to many of the characters with the surname Younwitty。 These characters are each a foundling, which are magical people born to non-magical folks。 Foundlings do not know their biological families, and because of this, Noreen Younwitty and all of Abby’s other friends are the only family that she’s ever had。 It makes me sad that foundlings never got to know their biological family。I’m curious to know how the process of being taken in by the coven and school goes, but it’s not information that we are given。 This is where headcanon comes in, but I’d love it if we got another book set in the same world that covers this even if it meant we didn’t follow Abby and her friends again。 All in all, this was a wonderful read, and I’m excited to check out more of Sweeney Boo’s books in the future。 。。。more
