Summary

This forest isn't charted on any map。 Every car breaks down at its treeline。 Mina's is no different。 Left stranded, she is forced into the dark woodland only to find a woman shouting, urging Mina to run to a concrete bunker。 As the door slams behind her, the building is besieged by screams。

Mina finds herself in a room with a wall of glass, and an electric light that activates at nightfall, when the Watchers come above ground。 These creatures emerge to observe their captive humans and terrible things happen to anyone who doesn't reach the bunker in time。

Afraid and trapped among strangers, Mina is desperate for answers。 Who are the Watchers and why are these creatures keeping them imprisoned, keen to watch their every move?

Arghhh, 2 stars for this 😭 When I first read the synopsis of this I couldn't wait to read it, it sounded brilliant, I was wrong。This had the potential to be sooooo good but everything just seemed。。。rushed? Not rushed, superficial? Surface level? I don't even know! There was no depth to anything, one thing happened straight after the other and I didn't really get a good feel of anything that was happening or going to happen。The plot twist at the end was a good one but still seemed to be over too Arghhh, 2 stars for this 😭 When I first read the synopsis of this I couldn't wait to read it, it sounded brilliant, I was wrong。This had the potential to be sooooo good but everything just seemed。。。rushed? I spent a lot of time reading this book wondering why it did not scare me。 I think it may have been a lack of emotional connection with the characters, as I felt very little when they were in danger。 The concept is good - a woman finding herself trapped in a forest of terrifying creatures - but it wasn't given enough time to breathe。The last few chapters were the most interesting to me, and I really started enjoying the story, planning to rate it a but higher。 However, it was completely let down I spent a lot of time reading this book wondering why it did not scare me。 I think it may have been a lack of emotional connection with the characters, as I felt very little when they were in danger。 The concept is good - a woman finding herself trapped in a forest of terrifying creatures - but it wasn't given enough time to breathe。The last few chapters were the most interesting to me, and I really started enjoying the story, planning to rate it a but higher。 However, it was completely let down by a cliffhanger ending and I don't think the author plans on writing a sequel any time soon。 If they do, I'll up my rating。 。。。more

3。5 rounded to 4While I enjoyed this story, I did have a lot of issues with it。 I did like the mythology used here - it is the kind of monster I can really sink my mind-teeth into。 However, if this type of situation ever actually happened, those people would not have been able to just come back to their lives。 I was like, no。 No。I also thought that some of this was repetitive and could have been shortened。 But there was a creeping dread that was palpable。 The cold, the dirt, the rot, the grime, 3。5 rounded to 4While I enjoyed this story, I did have a lot of issues with it。 I did like the mythology used here - it is the kind of monster I can really sink my mind-teeth into。 However, if this type of situation ever actually happened, those people would not have been able to just come back to their lives。 I was like, no。 No。I also thought that some of this was repetitive and could have been shortened。 But there was a creeping dread that was palpable。 The cold, the dirt, the rot, the grime, the lifelessness of the forest - all this was relentless and did keep the horror present。I would read a sequel。 。。。more

This book has a lot of potential。 The writing is fantastic; the way the author uses description is great。 What I liked was that I was surprised by the other elements that came into the story。 It wasn’t just horror, there was also a mix of thriller and mystery which I wasn’t expecting。 However, I did get slower finishing the book after a certain point and I was able to figure out the twists pretty early on。 (The clues were there and frankly easy to miss if you’re not lying attention)。 But all in This book has a lot of potential。 The writing is fantastic; the way the author uses description is great。 What I liked was that I was surprised by the other elements that came into the story。 It wasn’t just horror, there was also a mix of thriller and mystery which I wasn’t expecting。 However, I did get slower finishing the book after a certain point and I was able to figure out the twists pretty early on。 (The clues were there and frankly easy to miss if you’re not lying attention)。 But all in all, this book was pretty solid。 。。。more

As pretty as the book itself is (and the writing to boot) I just didn’t really hit it off with this one。 The Watchers raises an interesting premise amidst a gorgeously eerie woodland setting: the unsettling feeling of being watched has always been an effective tool。 I think this story would have worked amazingly as a novella! It just didn’t seem to have much substance to go with the novel concept, with a lot of the pages and developments feeling more like filler than events worth investing into。 As pretty as the book itself is (and the writing to boot) I just didn’t really hit it off with this one。 The Watchers raises an interesting premise amidst a gorgeously eerie woodland setting: the unsettling feeling of being watched has always been an effective tool。 I think this story would have worked amazingly as a novella! Slow and a tad repetitive。 Ending was a good punch but the time it took to get there was plodding。

A great read。 A little slow to start, but after reading I think it was needed and helped to build the tension brilliantly。 Creepy and unsettling, this was just what I needed!

idk it was really goodthe author described really well the reality of being trapped in the same place with the same people, in the same routine for a prolonged time。it dragged on a little bit near the end, but it picked up again in the last 20 pages or so。idk i liked it would recommend

I give the author props for trying something that would be considered somewhat different compared to most books coming out today。 I felt that the ending was kind of rushed and left open and some things that weren't important were drawn out more than needed。 I do like to have closure in a book so open endings aren't my favorite。 This does on the other hand leave room for a possible sequal, but I don't think that's something we will see any time soon。 I give the author props for trying something that would be considered somewhat different compared to most books coming out today。 I felt that the ending was kind of rushed and left open and some things that weren't important were drawn out more than needed。 I do like to have closure in a book so open endings aren't my favorite。 This does on the other hand leave room for a possible sequal, but I don't think that's something we will see any time soon。 。。。more

I know they say you should never judge a book by its cover … but covers are to books what faces are to Tinder (insert your favourite dating app here)。 They are the bait that draws a hungry set of eyes in。 And this cover drew me in hook, line and sinker。And the story itself was pretty darn good, too。It wasn’t perfect, as there were a few things with the plot/the odd occurrence here or there that made me think ‘based on the story you’ve been building and the mechanics of how everything works … tha I know they say you should never judge a book by its cover … but covers are to books what faces are to Tinder (insert your favourite dating app here)。 They are the bait that draws a hungry set of eyes in。 And this cover drew me in hook, line and sinker。And the story itself was pretty darn good, too。It wasn’t perfect, as there were a few things with the plot/the odd occurrence here or there that made me think ‘based on the story you’ve been building and the mechanics of how everything works … that simply can’t work。 But, as noticeable as they were, I was able to get past those little concerns and truly enjoy this neat little horror novel。The characters themselves were an enjoyable cast。 Despite each one being some kind of outcast or meek personality, they all felt different and it was very easy to distinguish between them。 I enjoyed the interactions between them and the relationships formed throughout the novel made me feel like I was reading about real people rather than fictional characters。 Mina was a very good lead character and the others provided an excellent supporting cast。 I also felt that the situations the characters were put in were vivid enough to have me thinking ‘how the heck would I react if that were happening to me?’The setting was intriguing。 Forests are, by their very nature, wild, untamed and something that quite simply do not belong to mankind。 So I loved the premise of this forest, filled with things that no man had ever seen, nor should ever have to encounter, being the end of so many people。 In a world where so much of our globe is under mankind’s yolk, it’s nice to imagine a place that isn’t。I won’t say what creature/s feature in this novel for fear of spoilers, but it’s a good take on them all the same and one I thoroughly enjoyed exploring。 I’ve never heard of A。 M。 Shine before, but I’ll certainly look to try more of the author’s work in the future。 。。。more

It was great to read a Horror set in Ireland based on our mythology! Elements of this reminded me a bit of "Invasion of the Body Snatchers"。 The horror was very effective, especially towards the end there were some really creepy passages that had me shutting the curtains tight。 The plot was very strong but parts felt a bit overly padded。 I think this could have been a 5 star read for me had it been a novella and some of the bloat in the beginning and middle been cut out。 Although the pacing was It was great to read a Horror set in Ireland based on our mythology! 3。5 rated up。 I overall enjoyed this book, it did seem to slump a bit in the middle for me though。 I enjoyed the characters and while the ending seemed predictable, I did not mind it and was still interested the story。

makes my skin crawl in a good wayThe first twist got me pretty good not gonna lie I felt almost silly for not seeing it sooner but the second twist?!? I screamed。 This is so creepy and haunting without a ton of gore or violence。 It doesn’t need anything fancy to scare the shit out of you。 And honestly I love Mina as a main character。

This books starts off in a pretty confusing way。 So you're not particulary sure what it is about at first but then starts growing and letting little glimpses about its concept。I must admit I was glued to it from the middle onwards and the ending was quite satisfying (something hard to get in a Horror Novel)。Would recommend if you like folkore-based horror。 This books starts off in a pretty confusing way。 So you're not particulary sure what it is about at first but then starts growing and letting little glimpses about its concept。I must admit I was glued to it from the middle onwards and the ending was quite satisfying (something hard to get in a Horror Novel)。Would recommend if you like folkore-based horror。 。。。more

OK,I want to give this book a 3。5 because it was a little bit creepy and while I enjoyed the writing style, a few times it just flew off on a weird descriptive tangent that really had me puzzled。 So puzzled it took me way out of the story and it pretty much ruined the book because I kept wondering if it would happen again。 Not a tangent in the storyline mind you - just a description of something random that absolutely made no sense to me。 I had the feeling the author was having so much fun descr OK,I want to give this book a 3。5 because it was a little bit creepy and while I enjoyed the writing style, a few times it just flew off on a weird descriptive tangent that really had me puzzled。 So puzzled it took me way out of the story and it pretty much ruined the book because I kept wondering if it would happen again。 Not a tangent in the storyline mind you - just a description of something random that absolutely made no sense to me。 I had the feeling the author was having so much fun describing the world it just went to this haywire place。 So it made me wonder what the editor was doing?I had heard about this book through the Books of Horror fb group and I think it had mostly positive views from readers。 I was grateful to find it on Kindle Unlimited。The setting is in Ireland and I suppose you could call it folk horror。Apologies for this somewhat lame review。 。。。more

interesting story with an excruciatingly slow narrator。

The story was fantastic。 It honestly made me feel a little sick in my mouth sometimes which, whilst gross, is a sign of a good horror story。 It definitely could have been shorter - there was a lot of filler that I ended up skimming passed, but the main plot points were very, very good。 I’d recommend!

3。5+-ish。 Not quite sure how I feel about this book: it was creepy yet not quite as creepy as I had hoped。 It was quite a good story yet not as satisfying as I thought it might be。 And yet, I couldn’t stop reading it。

This book was a HUGE disappointment for me。 The characters were wishy-washy and didn't behave in a manor that seemed to fit their perilous situation, the titular Watchers (who should have been a constant, terrifying threat) were almost a non-entity, and one of the book's big reveals was easily predictable very early on。 Worst of all, the author frequently derails the momentum of the plot with verbose prose and unnecessary details that would choke even Stephen King。 A major development about 3/4 This book was a HUGE disappointment for me。 The characters were wishy-washy and didn't behave in a manor that seemed to fit their perilous situation, the titular Watchers (who should have been a constant, terrifying threat) were almost a non-entity, and one of the book's big reveals was easily predictable very early on。 Worst of all, the author frequently derails the momentum of the plot with verbose prose and unnecessary details that would choke even Stephen King。 A major development about 3/4 through the book which should have been intense was instead quite tedious, and the story's denouement is probably three times as long as it should be, leaving me frustrated instead of excited or satisfied。 The premise of the book was deserving of a much better execution。 。。。more
