Summary

After touring the rural areas of Panga, Sibling Dex (a Tea Monk of some renown) and Mosscap (a robot sent on a quest to determine what humanity really needs) turn their attention to the villages and cities of the little moon they call home。

They hope to find the answers they seek, while making new friends, learning new concepts, and experiencing the entropic nature of the universe。

Becky Chambers's new series continues to ask: in a world where people have what they want, does having more even matter?

A little wonder of a book, just like the first one。 So much is drawn out of the characters and their world in just 150 pages that you wonder if somehow an extra 150 have been sneaked in without you noticing。

Incredibly comforting and quietly profound。 Becky Chambers remains my favourite author。

These books are a balm to my soul。

I started and finished this book today。 I cried 5 times, without counting the moments of just having water in my eyes。I write this, baffled, thinking “how can this person touch me so much? How can she speak to my soul with such delight, with such care? How can she do it and still stay in genre? This is, after all, a sci-fi story”Becky Chambers rips my heart apart and mends it back。 It sounds exaggerated, but it’s real。 The tears, at least, are proof。

I may have found the perfect Christmas gift for all of my favorite people – the two books set featuring the monk and a robot。

I think it's safe to say that anything Becky Chambers is sure to be a win for me! This sequel manages to be just as charming, captivating, and cozy as the first! The bonding grows but the action wanes as Dex and Moss travel through human lands finding topics of ownership, identity and family to be revealed in interesting ways。 Their next logical step would be to visit robot lands and perhaps model a human - robot connection for the world。

This book is like a warm hug。 It's almost like therapy。 I loved everything about it except, again, that it was too short! This book is like a warm hug。 It's almost like therapy。 I loved everything about it except, again, that it was too short! 。。。more

I just love this series。 It's sweet and gentle with profound philosophical discussions on life, the nature of humanity, and other such issues。 No one dies, nobody gets tortured, blown up or anything like that。 It's a nice book about life on this world, without all the big political happenings of some empire。 If that is what you want, then don't read this book。 Ms。 Chambers drives me nuts sometimes with the gender neutral pronouns, but I definitely think Dax is a female。 It's kind of obvious in t I just love this series。 It's sweet and gentle with profound philosophical discussions on life, the nature of humanity, and other such issues。 No one dies, nobody gets tortured, blown up or anything like that。 It's a nice book about life on this world, without all the big political happenings of some empire。 If that is what you want, then don't read this book。 Ms。 Chambers drives me nuts sometimes with the gender neutral pronouns, but I definitely think Dax is a female。 It's kind of obvious in the last quarter of the book。 No spoilers here! Beck Chambers continues her vibrant talent of using slice of life sci-fi to consider innate human desires and philosophical struggles。 What does it mean when you aren't satisfied with the life purpose that you have chosen? Highly recommend this book and its predecessor。 Beck Chambers continues her vibrant talent of using slice of life sci-fi to consider innate human desires and philosophical struggles。 What does it mean when you aren't satisfied with the life purpose that you have chosen? A joyful, hopeful book。 Just what I needed。

I wasn’t sure if I should have reread the first book in anticipation of this one, but I feel like it was good to just start mid-journey。 I think I enjoyed this one more than the first one, and am interested in more of Dex and Mosscap’s journey。

I'm happy to report that this book didn't make me cry! Take that Becky Chambers! That immature aside over。。。 This was a delight。 I don't think I'll ever tire of this world or these characters or these conversations about self-doubt, depression, and the continual search for our place in the world。 I already want to re-read the first one even though it's only been a few months。 I can't wait for the next book and whatever future adventures Dex and Mosscap embark on。 I'm happy to report that this book didn't make me cry! This was a delightfully satisfying sequel in the Monk and Robot series。 And I enjoyed it better than book one because I read it physically and slowly, instead of via audio while multi-tasking。 This isn’t a book to add to your multi-tasking。 It’s a read to savor as a moving meditation on the ways of being outside of capitalism, challenging our modern society’s false sense of urgency and competitive BS。If you’re down for a character-driven thought experiment that is a true Becky Chambers signature This was a delightfully satisfying sequel in the Monk and Robot series。 And I enjoyed it better than book one because I read it physically and slowly, instead of via audio while multi-tasking。 This isn’t a book to add to your multi-tasking。 It’s a read to savor as a moving meditation on the ways of being outside of capitalism, challenging our modern society’s false sense of urgency and competitive BS。If you’re down for a character-driven thought experiment that is a true Becky Chambers signature, with no need for an action-packed plot or dramatic conflict, this is a great gift for yourself。Mosscap the robot is the best foil for humanity’s ridiculousness when it comes to relating with the natural world。 “I don’t think it’s very kind to use an entire subclass of animal as a metaphor for behavior that you deem unseemly。”Every time I read a Chambers book, I need to journal about so many themes that are important to me。 This round highlights the environment as a key protagonist in our collective story, the sacredness of friendship, the innate and unconditional value of every living thing。 So much to process and reflect on if you so desire。I hope you make time for a cozy read with this sweet homage to the simple things that might hold all the answers。 。。。more

DNF… I love a good philosophical question… a statement that makes me stop and really think… but this just became exhausting。 There was no story to follow。 I feel like this book is the epitome of too much of a good thing。 A good story will have little gems of knowledge or thought provoking tidbits… but when you’re drowning in them you stop valuing them。

I liked this one much more than the first。 Super cute! Much better plot and kinda feels like a hug!

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Well-written, just not my jam。 Again, the author comes up short。 She crafts the perfect climax to some fascinating existential and philosophical questions, but her answer (through the voices of her characters) leaves nothing but emptiness in its wake。My beliefs and values differed too drastically from the author’s for me to really settle in and enjoy the book。 For example, I like this quote, spoken by Dex, the genderless monk: “You don’t have to have a reason to be tired。 You don’t have to earn Well-written, just not my jam。 Again, the author comes up short。 She crafts the perfect climax to some fascinating existential and philosophical questions, but her answer (through the voices of her characters) leaves nothing but emptiness in its wake。My beliefs and values differed too drastically from the author’s for me to really settle in and enjoy the book。 For example, I like this quote, spoken by Dex, the genderless monk: “You don’t have to have a reason to be tired。 You don’t have to earn rest or comfort。 You’re allowed to just be。” But I differ in how I would finish the sentiment… because at some point, we do have a responsibility to other people。 We are not islands, and we cannot just “rest” and “be” forever。 The book seemed to conclude under the guise that no one need feel responsible to anyone except themselves… or responsible at all, for that matter。 A tough sell for me。 。。。more

Enjoyed this one as much as the first in the series。

This series is soothing & entertaining。 And demonstrates some wonderful ideas that offer hope rather than despair。

A very beautiful second edition to this amazing series。 Two best friends discover the world around them, one seeing the world for the first time and the other seeing the world in a very different light。 Chambers’ writing is so astonishingly handcrafted that every sentence feels like I’m learning something new。 All in all this book feels like a warm cup of tea with an old friend。 I’d recommend this series to anyone looking for some cosy vibes with a pinch of queerness and a very funky robot。
