Summary

You've Got Mail meets Morgan Matson in this smart, banter-filled romcom with a bookish twist。

Nothing will stop Madeline Moore from taking over her family's independent bookstore after college。 Nothing, that is--until a chain bookstore called Prologue opens across the street and threatens to shut them down。

Madeline sets out to demolish the competition, but the guy who works over at Prologue seems intent on ruining her life。 Not only is he taking her customers, he has the unbelievable audacity to be。。。 extremely cute。

But that doesn't matter。 Jasper is the enemy and he will be destroyed。 After all--all's fair in love and (book) war。

Really enjoyed this one! <3

This was a solid 3。5 stars! I wanted to love it but I liked it。 The main character was mildly sympathetic but unlikable and the ending made me a little sad…

I really enjoyed reading this book, I liked that once they're together then something happens to weaken/destroy the relationship until the very end, and I think I say a few song references(maybe) in the book and I really liked the concept of the book and learning about how much effort is put into managing a bookstore。 I really enjoyed reading this book, I liked that once they're together then something happens to weaken/destroy the relationship until the very end, and I think I say a few song references(maybe) in the book and I really liked the concept of the book and learning about how much effort is put into managing a bookstore。 。。。more

I had accidently stumbled on the book and the cover was something that made me read the book。 The book is fun to read, good beginning although the female lead is little hyper and can't take a no and takes time to understand things but the book is a really nice read。 A little rom-com, romance and banter always works。 I had accidently stumbled on the book and the cover was something that made me read the book。 The book is fun to read, good beginning although the female lead is little hyper and can't take a no and takes time to understand things but the book is a really nice read。 A little rom-com, romance and banter always works。 。。。more

3。25⭐️It felt slow at times and I didn’t really like madeleine’s character all that much, but I like the “universe” they where in and Jasper was a good love interest。 At the end of the day, I wouldn’t recommend it, but at the same time it’s a book that I feel like some people could enjoy more Thant I did。

First things first I absolutely love that 75% or more of this book takes place in a bookstore。 Now onto Madeline she seemed so real with her selfishness, tantrums and just trying to learn how to deal with her life changing because she growing up。 Then add in that dash of Jasper with a quintessential love hate relationship。 I gobbled up this book with a spoon。

Nice idea (who doesn’t want to read more about bookstores?) but I found myself frustrated with Madeline, confused as to why these two are together (except teenage crushes I guess), and I did not buy the mother-daughter reconciliation at all。 There was almost nothing here to suggest the mother has earned a spot in the lives of the children she abandoned。 Also content warning for internalized fatphobia。

2。5/5 stars。 Not the greatest book I’ve read, but it was light, it was airy。 I could see why I lot of people like this book。 But idk it wasn’t a favorite of mine🤷‍♀️。 I do like books where books make an appearance, so that’s a plus。 Don’t regret reading but it wouldn’t be one that I would jump at the chance to recommend to others。

I don’t really know what to say about this book。 It just kinda *was*。 It was neither good nor bad, but I also can’t remember rly anything that happened。There wasn’t rly any plot, it was there but wasn’t quite formed The characters were annoying and felt under developed and the relationship between Madeleine and Jasper felt forced at mostThe story also took me far too long to get into and I almost DNF’d it but I soldiered through。 I was disappointed because I was rly looking forward to reading th I don’t really know what to say about this book。 It just kinda *was*。 It was neither good nor bad, but I also can’t remember rly anything that happened。There wasn’t rly any plot, it was there but wasn’t quite formed The characters were annoying and felt under developed and the relationship between Madeleine and Jasper felt forced at mostThe story also took me far too long to get into and I almost DNF’d it but I soldiered through。 I was disappointed because I was rly looking forward to reading this。 I guess that’s all their rly is to say about Last Chance Books 。。。more

Is her poor judgement and temper the only way she ever gets heard? Regarding Madeline and her Aunt Astrid- there was such a lack of warmth, honesty and trust。 I never understood their relationship。 Astrid raised her but often comes off as emotionally detached given the disregard for how Madeline feels about the bookstore and her general absence from most of the story action。 Astrid is her apparent guardian and savior, yet the book spends the majority of the family time trying to push her absent birth-mother Dahlia。 She has two mothers and yet neither of them is her “Mom”。 Neither of them have fully claimed her as their daughter。 I feel like between these three characters – there is so much left unsaid。 Don’t even get me started on the complete lack of support by her half-brother who basically distances himself from Madeline the whole book when she’s having an incredibly hard time and writes off all her genuine concern as a guilt trip。 Her family and work life is so complicated that the romance, if you could call it that, felt like a subplot。 Like is this a romance or is it a coming-of-age story? The only chemistry Madeline and Jasper was completely sexual – yet somehow not sexy at all。 Banter is one thing, but there is nothing cute about actively trying to sabotage each other’s family businesses。 After everything they did to each other, I don’t understand why they ended up together。 We need to get away from the trope of “he/she is mean to me so they must like me。” I lost count of how many times the MC says she hates Jasper, yet everyone keeps pushing him on her。 She claims to be an advocate of consent but it just feels like everyone is gas lighting the s*** outta her until she decides he’s too attractive to not like。It wasn’t what I would call pleasant read- the reader has to fill in a lot。 It just felt like there was so much missing and it was just a rush to get to the next bit of dialogue。 In the end, the conflict is “resolved” so quickly that it barely seems justified。I was ready to give it a 2 or possibly a 3 because it had me feeling some feeling, but I don’t think I could recommend this one as a romance so unfortunately I lowered my rating。 。。。more

I loved the book all the way until the ending。 I felt as if the ending was underwhelming, like I feel like you expected it to end that way but in a bigger way。

I really enjoyed this book, I enjoyed how competitive they were - their banter, how they got each other to buy books from each other。 A good book overall! There were some relatable things mentioned such as “I imagine you read multiple books at once because you can’t ever take a minute to just breathe。” Or “was I just someone fun to tease when he was drunk? The only person to reply to him from a long list of people he called or texted that night? Was the library a test I somehow failed?
