Summary

An intense and often perplexing read。 I hesitate to call it a novel。 It is more like a dissertation。 Cluttered with footnotes and sidebars。 But it keeps drawing you in。 Youre twisted between Truants ramblings and the documentary that is the Navidson record。 Worth the experience of reading and making me interested in Danielewski's other works。 An intense and often perplexing read。 I hesitate to call it a novel。 It is more like a dissertation。 Cluttered with footnotes and sidebars。 But it keeps drawing you in。 Youre twisted between Truants ramblings and the documentary that is the Navidson record。 Worth the experience of reading and making me interested in Danielewski's other works。 。。。more

“Look to the sky, look to yourself and remember: we are only god's echoes and god is Narcissus。”I wanted this book to be special。 I really, really did。 Reading the raving reviews and the inspiration people had drawn from this prose I was so excited to pick it up finally。 Oh boy。First of all, when a novel advertises itself as horror, one might expect the novel to be, well, horror。 A poor attempt at creating fear, this novel fell into the borderline sci-fi category, instantly disappointing。 Furthe “Look to the sky, look to yourself and remember: we are only god's echoes and god is Narcissus。”I wanted this book to be special。 I really, really did。 Reading the raving reviews and the inspiration people had drawn from this prose I was so excited to pick it up finally。 Oh boy。First of all, when a novel advertises itself as horror, one might expect the novel to be, well, horror。 A poor attempt at creating fear, this novel fell into the borderline sci-fi category, instantly disappointing。 Furthermore, a pseudo-documentary situation, it would have fared a whole lot better had the excerpts chosen for the novel all meant something。 Some were so mundane it hurt。 I’d reach the end of one and instantly forget it because of its pure irrelevance to the story。 It really made a whole lot of this book feel like a waste of time。 Overall, this could have been a much better read had half the things included been excluded。 From taking a chapter to define the word echo to obscure & irrelevant Dante excerpts, all was underwhelming in the worst way。 Feel free, pick this up, make your own judgement。 But when a novel like this is competing with the genius of Piranesi & Dark Matter, oh lawrd it falls so short it’s comical。 But hey, at least what little of the book that was dedicated to the actual plot was good! 。。。more

I wanted a literature not a university book"。But this is where the book starts to pick up。 After the explorations of the house start。 Will the book begin to make more sense from here? Not necessarily, no。 It actually raises question after question。 But it will have you hooked and puzzled。Speaking of puzzled, I highly suggest to read this book when you have free time。 Actually no, when your mind is free。 If you want a book to relax after a long day at work or school this isn't the one。 It requires attention and patience to overcome all this book turning and eye squinting that you are going to do because of the upside down sections and the font change。 Also, don't read another book in parallel with this one because House of Leaves contains three main storylines on its own。 The book tells you how fast to read it。 There are sections where there is one word in each page and others where they are filled with dense text, footnotes, little squares with different text, pages with names that you don't need to read etc。 When it comes to footnotes I suggest you read them。 Not all of them of course because some just inform you from which book or interview this one quote is from。 But others are more explanatory。 Especially the one of Johnny (the second storyline)。 Johnny's story is told through footnotes and even though at the beginning it seems like it doesn't correlate to the first storyline, the more you proceed that changes。 I understand that this book is not for everyone but it's probably not like anything you've ever read up to this point。 I hope you will give it a chance so that you will too experience the feelings that will arise from reading it。 。。。more

I don't even know how to categorise this book。 It's a ghost story about a haunted house。 It's an academic text。 It's a creepypasta。 It's an experimental 700 page love letter to semiotics that also manages to be an incredibly compelling love story。 I can't believe he managed to write this。 I still don't fully understand what I have read。 This is one of several books that should only be read as a physical copy: it needs to exist as a thing。 I don't even know how to categorise this book。 It's a ghost story about a haunted house。 It's an academic text。 It's a creepypasta。 It's an experimental 700 page love letter to semiotics that also manages to be an incredibly compelling love story。 I can't believe he managed to write this。 I still don't fully understand what I have read。 This is one of several books that should only be read as a physical copy: it needs to exist as a thing。 。。。more

This book is shit。 If this book was shortened to just “The Navidson Record” pieces I would’ve given this tale 4 out of 5 stars。 Instead we have 6000 footnotes that are pointless or over explanation for stuff nobody cares about unless trying to write a college paper。 A giant turd filled diary of another character named Truant who is 100 percent uninteresting, especially with all his drug and sex ramblings。 Then a bunch of other side feces of letters from his mom, and boring ass poems and indexes This book is shit。 If this book was shortened to just “The Navidson Record” pieces I would’ve given this tale 4 out of 5 stars。 Instead we have 6000 footnotes that are pointless or over explanation for stuff nobody cares about unless trying to write a college paper。 A giant turd filled diary of another character named Truant who is 100 percent uninteresting, especially with all his drug and sex ramblings。 Then a bunch of other side feces of letters from his mom, and boring ass poems and indexes and useless drivel。 I hate this book with a passion。 The only reason I gave it two stars is 1 - I liked The Navidson Record segments。 2 - It’s so disorienting of a read I swore at one point I read a footnote that suddenly wasn’t there。 Also TNR pieces do give creepy vibes。 I also had a nightmare at one point where I was trying to figure out what the hell was going on before something in dark “Got me,” and I woke up。 Outside of that, this book was just a waste of paper to come off as “Artsy” and “Different。” If you read it, go for only the TNR chapters and skip the rest。 It will save you a lot of tedious nonsense。 。。。more

This is a difficult book to read。 Its presentation and formatting can be hard to adjust to。 It feels like something written by a madman (or several madmen)。 I remember some prominent reviewer saying that this book is "an attack on the concept of the story itself"。 All that being said, it's not just a gimmick。The bizarre formatting and story structure elevate the narrative and made me feel things that I had never felt before when reading the book。 This is especially true when it comes to the sens This is a difficult book to read。 Its presentation and formatting can be hard to adjust to。 It feels like something written by a madman (or several madmen)。 I remember some prominent reviewer saying that this book is "an attack on the concept of the story itself"。 All that being said, it's not just a gimmick。The bizarre formatting and story structure elevate the narrative and made me feel things that I had never felt before when reading the book。 This is especially true when it comes to the sensation of space, when a character feels confined, you feel confined。 At times it can almost make you agoraphobic or claustrophobic。 Formatting aside, this book puts you in the shoes of the main character。 You share the journey of uncovering and deciphering Zampano's work。 。。。more

Thoroughly enjoyed this book(?)。 I have talked about it at length with people since I finished。 A genuine adventure, it will have you saying “what the hell?” Out loud to the pages。 A puzzle maker making his craft beautifully。

I did it。 In a span of 3 days, I finished this book and came out with my mind still sane and intact (or is it?)。 I found myself flipping the pages yesterday like a madwoman, driven by some unknown force because I just had to know what happens。 And mind you, at the end of the book, I still don't know anything。 Despite the numerous frustrating formats, I persevered。 At some point I realized answers are not forthcoming so I gave myself up to the book, and I think that is the whole point really。 I a I did it。 In a span of 3 days, I finished this book and came out with my mind still sane and intact (or is it?)。 I found myself flipping the pages yesterday like a madwoman, driven by some unknown force because I just had to know what happens。 And mind you, at the end of the book, I still don't know anything。 Despite the numerous frustrating formats, I persevered。 At some point I realized answers are not forthcoming so I gave myself up to the book, and I think that is the whole point really。 I am not a person of big words, I have no deep insights or theories to share, and frankly I am not interested in spending more time decoding or figuring out puzzles within the book。 I leave that up to others whose minds have more capacity。 By the way, there are lots and lots of online forums dedicated to this and I truly admire the brilliant ones who have figured out a LOT of the codes and offer plausible theories on the very nature of the story。But no, that is not what I took away from this。 I let the book take me away, literally。 I can't explain it。 I can't say that this is the best writing ever, and forget about the plot。 It's a story within a story within a story。 The characters to me are mostly unlikeable。 The formatting is, as I earlier mentioned, frustrating at times。 You have to read it sideways, upside down, facing a mirror, etc。 You get the picture。 Yet, and YET, why did I find myself crawling back to this chaos every chance I get? Why do I still think of the book way after I've finished? They say it is a difficult read, but why did I finish it in 3 days, out of my own doing? Most importantly - what was this book really about? Was any of it "real"? Was I taken for a spin? Am I supposed to be looking for deeper meaning? I don't know and I don't care。 I just had so much fun reading this。 Should you read it? I believe the answer is yes, if only for you to form your own opinion about it。 Don't get bogged down by the negative reviews until you've seen for yourself。 I can see why some will not like this at all。 But I believe you should try at least once。 You read this for the experience。 Don't expect to be gratified at the end。 But expect to look at things a little differently。 It definitely gets in your skin slowly。 I do believe that any serious reader should attempt this at least once。 。。。more

This is one of those books I read because everyone else said they couldn't。 I didn't get it。 Now I do。 It took me /weeks/ to finish and that was incredibly unexpected。 Even confusing books I read fast。 Nothing made me more excited to buy this book than the nice lady at Barnes and Noble saying "if you finish it, let me know, I want to sit down and chat with someone else who survived"。After a look through, I decided this was a book read repeatedly。 Once would never be enough。 It will be one a revi This is one of those books I read because everyone else said they couldn't。 I didn't get it。 Now I do。 It took me /weeks/ to finish and that was incredibly unexpected。 Even confusing books I read fast。 Nothing made me more excited to buy this book than the nice lady at Barnes and Noble saying "if you finish it, let me know, I want to sit down and chat with someone else who survived"。After a look through, I decided this was a book read repeatedly。 Once would never be enough。 It will be one a revisit regularly。 And every time it will be the same words and the same house and the same book but a very different story。So this read through was about the story and nothing else。 Not annotating or "understanding" or analyzing。 Just the story being the naturally twisting and intentionally confusing experience it's meant to be。 And once I was able to let it be that (and let my innate desire to understand the intricacies of it go) it was exactly that and I understood it intimately。 Not the weird ins and outs, but the feeling it's meant to give。 And wow, does it do that。You feel a bit crazy。 You feel a little more than a bit manic。 You stay up until 3 am because stopping is impossible and you try desperately to tell your partner about it by saying "it's a guy studying a guy studing a video sort of and then there's a monster in the house that's too big" and they look at you like they're questioning whether they need to call your mom or sister to check in on your mental health。 You use fifteen bookmarks and a pencil and that's when you /don't/ plan on annotating。 And yet in all of that, there's a comfort to the strangeness。 A home inside that damn house that I'm still trying to puzzle out。 I'm not sure the best way to read it for the first time。 If you should go into it and just read it, every single footnote and letter and appendix reference, and not worry about really "getting it" on a deeper level and just let the madness consume you。 Or if it's better to use the countless forums and reddit and book clubs dedicated to unraveling the record。 But I do know Nothing I've ever read or will again will come close to this book。 Not in the "is it a good book" way。 There are plenty of five star books。 But in the "I don't know many people I'd recommend it to because the group of people who could survive to the end is so small" and "I don't think I'll ever feel comfortable really talking about this book in any way that's not a conspiracy board tacked to my dining room wall" and "the person I was before this is not the person I am now and I don't know of that's good or bad yet" way。 But I do know I loved every second of it and the book hangover is going to make anything that tries to follow up very very difficult。 。。。more

Dans horreur? fantastique? thriller? ou dans essai? oulipo, peut-être? disons qu'au-delà d'être un "simple" roman, c'est pour moi également un objet littéraire, loin d'être parfait ou renversant, mais marquant, ça oui。 。。。more

What a bizarre book。 I'm have to say this is an incredibly clever book with a very good prose。 And to come up with so many fictional resources must take an immense amount of brain power。 It is also claustrophobic, disorienting and creepy。 The interaction of the different narrators is so complex that people still debate theories today。This book covers: psychology, mathematics, mythology, multiverses, relationships, love and loss to name but a few。 There are endless footnotes and footnotes within footnotes that reference (mostly) fictional books, magazines, television shows, radio shows etc。 And in many places they reference the book itself。 In some places paragraphs are upside down, back to front or angled。 Some pages seem to have too many words on them and some don't have any。 I consider myself to be a fairly competent reader but this book was challenging。 Holding over 700 pages of B5 paper is just the beginning。I still really don't know how I feel about this book。 There were multiple times when I nearly DNF。 After reading a hundred pages of dross about a junkies sex life, along with seemingly endless footnotes, I would then be dragged back in by ten pages of searing storytelling。 It is incredibly frustrating but that's half the point。 Ultimately you get out of HoL exactly what you put in as you're left to basically fill in ALL the gaps (and believe me there are a lot)。 You will either love or hate House of Leaves, as you can see from other reviews。 I of course have to be different and feel equal amounts of both。 I've been told that its better when reading it a second time around。 That may be true but I'm not stupid, clever or drunk enough to commit to that right now。 。。。more
