Summary

If the past is prologue, then George R。 R。 Martin’s masterwork—the most inventive and entertaining fantasy saga of our time—warrants one hell of an introduction。 At long last, it has arrived with The World of Ice and Fire

This lavishly illustrated volume is a comprehensive history of the Seven Kingdoms, providing vividly constructed accounts of the epic battles, bitter rivalries, and daring rebellions that lead to the events of A Song of Ice and Fire and HBO’s Game of Thrones。 In a collaboration that’s been years in the making, Martin has teamed with Elio M。 García, Jr。, and Linda Antonsson, the founders of the renowned fan site Westeros。org—perhaps the only people who know this world almost as well as its visionary creator。

Collected here is all the accumulated knowledge, scholarly speculation, and inherited folk tales of maesters and septons, maegi and singers。 It is a chronicle which stretches from the Dawn Age to the Age of Heroes; from the Coming of the First Men to the arrival of Aegon the Conqueror; from Aegon’s establishment of the Iron Throne to Robert’s Rebellion and the fall of the Mad King, Aerys II Targaryen, which has set into motion the “present-day” struggles of the Starks, Lannisters, Baratheons, and Targaryens。 The definitive companion piece to George R。 R。 Martin’s dazzlingly conceived universe, The World of Ice and Fire is indeed proof that the pen is mightier than a storm of swords。

What can I say? I love everything about the SOIAF-universe even if it's not an actual story with a narrative。 I hope in future books we will get to explore more of the fascinating places described in this one! This book kept my interest through the Targaryen dynasty and during the portion about the Westerlands, but other than that I was bored the rest of the time。

No star rating because this isn't a standard book, but I did enjoy the expansive overview of the world of Ice and Fire and the fake histories and cultural details contained therein! Very fun worldbuilding, inspiring at some turns。 No star rating because this isn't a standard book, but I did enjoy the expansive overview of the world of Ice and Fire and the fake histories and cultural details contained therein! I particularly enjoyed the first half of the book and found it really interesting。 There is definitely a lot of history in the world of Westeros。

Again, written by a maester, so there's a lot of "no one can truly know"。 Still, I'm at awe by the history Martin created, stretching to tens of thousands of years up till beloved Jofffrey's death。 It'd be great though to have delved deeper into the children of the forest etc。 So much material, I'm sure our grandkids will be watching new spinoffs of。 Wonderful illustrations too。 E-book (isnb 978-0-345-53555-9) was 585 pages btw。 Again, written by a maester, so there's a lot of "no one can truly know"。 Still, I'm at awe by the history Martin created, stretching to tens of thousands of years up till beloved Jofffrey's death。 It'd be great though to have delved deeper into the children of the forest etc。 So much material, I'm sure our grandkids will be watching new spinoffs of。 Wonderful illustrations too。 E-book (isnb 978-0-345-53555-9) was 585 pages btw。 。。。more

There is no reason to read this unless you are a superfan of the Song of Ice and Fire series - in which case, you have probably already bought the book。 I don't regret buying it, and I still thumb through it now and then when I want to feel cool thumbing through a book for bits of lore rather than going to a wiki of ice and fire, but ultimately, anybody who is wondering whether or not they should buy it probably shouldn't。 There is no reason to read this unless you are a superfan of the Song of Ice and Fire series - in which case, you have probably already bought the book。 I don't regret buying it, and I still thumb through it now and then when I want to feel cool thumbing through a book for bits of lore rather than going to a wiki of ice and fire, but ultimately, anybody who is wondering whether or not they should buy it probably shouldn't。 。。。more

If the World of Ice and Fire would exist for real, this would be a non-fiction book。 Though it is called Westeros, a substantial part of the book is dedicated to an extensive history of the Targaryen dynasty and another substantial part to a description of Essos and its lands and tribes。 Getting through this book was a bit tedious at times。 All in all it delivers quite interesting background information for fans of Martin's Ice and Fire series, but the writing style was repetitive - Martin has c If the World of Ice and Fire would exist for real, this would be a non-fiction book。 Though it is called Westeros, a substantial part of the book is dedicated to an extensive history of the Targaryen dynasty and another substantial part to a description of Essos and its lands and tribes。 Getting through this book was a bit tedious at times。 All in all it delivers quite interesting background information for fans of Martin's Ice and Fire series, but the writing style was repetitive - Martin has created SO many lands, families, tribes and cultures that it is hardly possible to describe them in 300 pages。 The result is that summing up of the most important facts makes way for stories and anecdotes, and so it was not a very exiting read。 I missed a history of the cities in the Slaver's Bay (Meereen, Astapor, Yunkai), and wonder if that was left out because the novels describe that area extensively。 Also I'd loved to have an eloborate world map accompanying the book。 When Martin describes the lands of Westeros, each chapter starts with a map of that area, but for Essos we only get the contours of the continent。The layout and the illustrations are marvellous though。 。。。more

This read like a well-written history text book。 While I wish it had maps for the areas outside of Westeros, I would list that as a small and only lacking element。

Beautiful illustrations and fascinating details that make the Ice & Fire books so much more immersive and adds interesting context to the novels。 I often forgot I was reading about a fictional world with how fully Martin outlines the histories of these realms!

If you are in an obsessive stage with ASOIAF, then you may really enjoy this one。 If not, this will probably be like a boring text book。 This one covers everything from religion to wars, history to geography of the lands。 It even explores, somewhat slightly, the other areas only briefly mentioned in the books。

I'm a sucker for reference books, so one set in a world as rich as that in A Song of Ice and Fire was clearly going to be right up my alley。 This book, written from the perspective of a Maester of the Citadel in service of King Tommen, just expands the world that George R。R。 Martin intricately weaved in his books。 I've always struggled a bit through the Targaryen history because of how similar the names are and the incestuous offshoots, but this book broke it down in consumable chunks that I wil I'm a sucker for reference books, so one set in a world as rich as that in A Song of Ice and Fire was clearly going to be right up my alley。 This book, written from the perspective of a Maester of the Citadel in service of King Tommen, just expands the world that George R。R。 Martin intricately weaved in his books。 I've always struggled a bit through the Targaryen history because of how similar the names are and the incestuous offshoots, but this book broke it down in consumable chunks that I will probably reference many times in the future。The art in this book is also amazing so I recommend reading in a full color format。 There are a bunch of artists to give credit to but they all brought life to the people and locations that make this one of the richest worlds in literature。Pick this up if you plan to watch the Game of Thrones spinoffs and want to make a rich world even richer。 Also use it as a reference as you revisit this world (hopefully in the form of new books。。。 we believe in you George!) again and again。 。。。more

I like how the in world biases of the text’s writer were incorporated into the text, especially if you’re reading the series one can tell where the biases are most apparent。
