007 is MIA。 009 is on a mission to rescue 003 who has been captured by Rattenfanger, but the rescue does not quite go according to plan。 Lots of thrills, spills and derringdo abound in this story, far to much gung-ho for me I’m afraid。Not a particularly enjoyable read for me, I thought it too lengthy and there was a lot of unnecessary prose, a good edit would work wonders。 The author has made a really good job of taking up the IF baton, but the story needs to be more succinct。 At the moment it’s 007 is MIA。 009 is on a mission to rescue 003 who has been captured by Rattenfanger, but the rescue does not quite go according to plan。 Lots of thrills, spills and derringdo abound in this story, far to much gung-ho for me I’m afraid。Not a particularly enjoyable read for me, I thought it too lengthy and there was a lot of unnecessary prose, a good edit would work wonders。 The author has made a really good job of taking up the IF baton, but the story needs to be more succinct。 At the moment it’s too busy。A good read for action seekers and thriller buffs。Thank you NetGalley。 。。。more

T his story was full of non stop action。 An expansion on James Bond 007 with several of the old cast running the department。 There is still a megalomaniac trying to control the world and a group of spies with 00 prefixes trying to stop him。 It also relates to the real world with things that are happening now, which makes it more real。 Interesting conclusion。。

Kim Sherwood should get an extra star for having a title with multiple puns in it。 The book cover is clever as well as lovely。 If you are more of a George Smiley fan than a James Bond fan, like me, don’t worry because this novel has layers, including the hunt for a mole。 It’s a thriller, but it draws the reader in from the start because of the believable inner life of the protagonists。 It’s paced well and if you are interested in classic cars or watches there are a plethora of them。 Like the ori Kim Sherwood should get an extra star for having a title with multiple puns in it。 The book cover is clever as well as lovely。 If you are more of a George Smiley fan than a James Bond fan, like me, don’t worry because this novel has layers, including the hunt for a mole。 It’s a thriller, but it draws the reader in from the start because of the believable inner life of the protagonists。 It’s paced well and if you are interested in classic cars or watches there are a plethora of them。 Like the originals it seems there are only a limited number of agents who can save the world and they have to run around the world to do so。 And this one contains humour just as ironic but more acceptable today。 As others have said some of the original characters remain。 My favourite was Mrs Keator, although Moneypenny was also well drawn。 The book contains themes of family, absence and humanity, and asks moral questions。 I think the quotation which anchors the book is Walt Whitman who also says ‘In all people I see myself’It’s a great read。 Bring on the next two! 。。。more

Just the same as Bond though, they do have a license to kill。 Will they be “shaken not stirred“ in their latest assignments to protect our national interests? Tech billionaire so Bertram Paradise makes a huge claim, that his company can reverse the climate crisis。 Can he or is his claim baloney? The agents task is to get to the truth as Rattenfänger’s sticky fingers seem to be all over this too。 In addition, there is an MI6 mole …。Things get mighty hot and dangerous pretty quickly。 As the plot unfolds will readers be ‘shaken’ and maybe ‘stirred’?! It takes some chutzpah to try to take on the Bond mantle, has Kim Sherwood pulled it off? In some ways, yes。 I really like that Bond in person may not be in it but he casts a long shadow over the whole thing。 The climate change focus is good too, bringing the iconic series into the 21st century and making the theme relevant。 It has many of the ingredients we expect with plenty of action and numerous twists and turns with it ending on a very good cliffhanger。 There are repeat characters such as Moneypenny, M, Q, (now a supercomputer) and CIA operative Felix Leiter。 There are also some terrific settings which add colour and vibrancy to the action and I really enjoy those。 However, in other ways Kim Sherwood misses the mark I found I don’t gel with it in the same way as the Ian Fleming originals。 It takes a long time to get going, there’s an awful lot going on as it switches from one OO agent to another which it makes it feel disjointed。 There are a dizzying amount of characters which makes my head spin。Overall, kudos to the author as the major plot line is a good one and it does improve and become more pacey as the book progresses and as you become more familiar with the characters。 With thanks to NetGalley and especially to HarperCollins/HarperFiction for the much appreciated arc in return for an honest review。 。。。more

A new James Bond author, hmm, I know what you are all thinking。But there's no need to be afraid, as Kim Sherwood delivers this new 007 story and action thriller in spades! She has created some great new 00 characters and brings a wider range to the depth of these people, making them into real life persons, with a full 3560% background research of all their backstories。Very effective pacing and plotting, I feel that I've travelled all around the world, as the story unfolded, and builds to the big A new James Bond author, hmm, I know what you are all thinking。But there's no need to be afraid, as Kim Sherwood delivers this new 007 story and action thriller in spades! She has created some great new 00 characters and brings a wider range to the depth of these people, making them into real life persons, with a full 3560% background research of all their backstories。Very effective pacing and plotting, I feel that I've travelled all around the world, as the story unfolded, and builds to the big ending, and then there's another surprise。。。。I'd love to see this made into a film, so if Barbara Broccoli is reading this, and looking for the next 007 screenplay, look no further 。。。more

Firstly, thanks to NetGalley, the publishers, and the author for allowing me a pre release copy of this book for review。As has come to be an almost trademark of any James Bond book or film, we start off with agents infiltrating a heavily guarded hideout, this time in a bid to rescue one of their own from the militia Rattenfänger。 009 Sid Bashir is on a mission to rescue the captured 003, Johanna Harwood, an agent he and James Bond had both previously had a romantic relationship with。 Naturally, Firstly, thanks to NetGalley, the publishers, and the author for allowing me a pre release copy of this book for review。As has come to be an almost trademark of any James Bond book or film, we start off with agents infiltrating a heavily guarded hideout, this time in a bid to rescue one of their own from the militia Rattenfänger。 009 Sid Bashir is on a mission to rescue the captured 003, Johanna Harwood, an agent he and James Bond had both previously had a romantic relationship with。 Naturally, Bashir and Harwood make their escape。 Meanwhile, Sir Bertram Paradise claims to have developed a means to reverse climate change。 But one of the scientists on the project, as well as one of Paradise's team, have gone missing。 With M's top spy, James Bond, having disappeared while on a mission some 18 months previously and now presumed dead, Harwood, Bashir, and 004 Joseph Dryden, collectively MI6's next generation of super spys, are sent to find out the truth and locate the missing scientist and security agent。 Before long it becomes apparent that Rattenfänger have their noses in Sir Bertram's invention and the agents are also faced with potentially deadly confrontations with members of the group。 And with Rattenfänger constantly seeming to be one step ahead of the agents, it soon becomes apparent that there is a mole in MI6。 Will our heroes identify the traitor, save the day, the missing personnel, will they be in time to save the planet? And will they discover the whereabouts of 007?While this isn't a James Bond book, most of our favourite MI6 characters are present - M, Moneypenny, Bill Tanner, and Felix Leiter。 Although Q is now a super computer rather than a department that loads up it's agents with all the latest toys and gadgets。This is an enjoyable book, it has plenty of action in it from start to finish。 Some of the scenarios, however, are not all that believable - though that has been the case throughout the whole Bond series。 There are times when you're bounced to a different location and it takes a while to discover why and how the characters have got there。 And there are plenty of red herrings to keep you guessing the identity of the mole so this gets an extra star from me for that。 So while it's not a patch on Ian Fleming's great works, we have to remember that the world has moved on since those days。 This seems to have been kept as close as possible to the style we've come to know and love from Bond books and that also wins brownie points for me。 It's definitely worth a read, it might even be made into a film eventually - there's definitely potential for it IMO。 。。。more

A brilliant thriller that is written flawlessly, the perfect choice for the fans of James Bond。 The first book in a trilogy that promises to impress, it is the kind of story that hooks the reader from the first lines。 I absolutely loved the concept and I happily returned to the universe created by Ian Fleming, enjoying the fresh perspective of Kim Sherwood。 James Bond is missing! The famous 007 agent has been captured, maybe even killed。 No one knows where he is or what happened to him。 They suspect that a military company is involved but shedding light on the matter turns out a genuine challenge。 The author introduces us to a new generation of spies, Johanna Harwood (003), Joseph Dryden (005), and Sid Bashir (009)。 As said, they represent “the very best and brightest of MI6”, with impressive skills, cunningness, and of course, a license to kill。 They will not stop at anything to protect their country, knowing very well that the fate of the world rests in their hands。For me, the strong point of the book was the fact that the story centered around the climate crisis。 We have Sir Bertram Paradise, a tech billionaire, who claims he can reverse the climate crisis and save the planet。 The new agents will be responsible for unraveling the truth before it is too late。 Throughout the story, you can feel the sense of urgency, this is brilliantly achieved! It is as if you were watching the story unfold right before your eyes, with an exciting mix of mystery and adventure。 The stakes are high, as they should be in any James Bond story。I loved how the authors brought all the familiar characters into the story, along the new agents。 Q, M, and Moneypenny join the adventure, their presence guiding the story at an exciting pace。 There are plenty of action scenes and chases to keep the reader entertained, a touch of romance for an interesting contrast。 Kim Sherwood has taken the universe of Ian Fleming and added her own input, and I think it is so clever to create a story where James Bond is actually missing。 However, despite his absence, one can feel him present in everything。 The new agents are always comparing and contrasting their decisions, trying to think how James Bond would handle a particular situation。This was an awesome read! Kim Sherwood has written a great book, transporting the world of James Bond into her own and adding subtle touches to make it quite enjoyable。 Plenty of twists and turns, new and old characters, a great cliffhanger so that we are eager for the second book in the trilogy… exceptional! I always imagine how hard it must be to write a book on a topic that has been so often explore and bring something new into the picture。 I believe this is one of the best James Bond books and I am excited for the sequel! 。。。more

James Bond is missing, presumed dead。 In his absence, we meet three new 00 agents: Johanna Harwood, 003。 Joseph Dryden, 004。 Sid Bashir, 009。 It is not all new figures - Q, M and Moneypenny are all here too, alongside a global menace, action scenes, chases and even romance too。 What Kim Sherwood has done with Ian Fleming's intellectual property is subtly redefine it, by focusing on these others in these familiar environments, and has found a way to make the world of Bond live without its hero。No James Bond is missing, presumed dead。 In his absence, we meet three new 00 agents: Johanna Harwood, 003。 Joseph Dryden, 004。 Sid Bashir, 009。 It is not all new figures - Q, M and Moneypenny are all here too, alongside a global menace, action scenes, chases and even romance too。 What Kim Sherwood has done with Ian Fleming's intellectual property is subtly redefine it, by focusing on these others in these familiar environments, and has found a way to make the world of Bond live without its hero。Not that Bond is absent from this novel。 His shadow looms large over proceedings, and the decisions these new agents make are compared and contrasted mentally with how we think Bond would handle them。 We cannot escape Bond。Sherwood's writing is precise, rapid, and the action clips along at a fair old place。 There are twists and turns, appearances from fan favourites - Felix Leiter! One for the fans of You Only Live Twice which I won't spoil - and, as expected, enough material left hanging to take us into book two。 It must be hard to write a Bond novel - we all know the character, we know the story beats to expect - and not everybody who has tried has succeeded all that well。 This, though, is one of the good ones, and one whose sequel I will be tracking down once Sherwood has finished writing it。Thank you to the publishers and Netgalley for the ARC。 。。。more
