Summary

I'll admit， this one was a bit difficult for me to get into， but once I did， I almost couldn't put it down。 While the book is quite a long one， I loved how everything came together at that crescendo of an ending - while the majority of the book felt like a winding road with a few hills， the last hundred or so pages felt like a high-paced car chase with sirens on your tail。 I think the ending really was what has rocketed my rating up。 So，I've docked one star for my lacklustre experience of the fi I'll admit， this one was a bit difficult for me to get into， but once I did， I almost couldn't put it down。 While the book is quite a long one， I loved how everything came together at that crescendo of an ending - while the majority of the book felt like a winding road with a few hills， the last hundred or so pages felt like a high-paced car chase with sirens on your tail。 I think the ending really was what has rocketed my rating up。 So，I've docked one star for my lacklustre experience of the first part of the book， but also because despite being a coming of age novel， it almost felt like Eli stayed the same。 I understood he was growing older （though I'll admit the audiobook didn't really assist me in keeping straight when each of the time jumps would occur）， but at no point in the book did I ever really feel a huge change in him。I've seen a few reviews where people have commented that they felt the novel seemed exaggerated。 I can't really argue with that as certain events of the novel did seem a bit outlandish， but I know that the environment of drug-addled， mentally unwell parents and constant medley of criminals is an unfortunate reality for a lot of kids - and for me， Dalton made it feel very real。 I was actually surprised to learn that the author had based quite a lot of the story on his own experiences， so you know - there you go。 。。。more

This took a while to get into but there is a turning point in the story that then had me hooked。 A real page turner by the end。 A different insight to a crime world that is quite shocking but intriguing from the characters Trent Dalton has created to tell the story。

I loved it！ An extremely well-written story that navigates between crime and family drama。 Eli is a complex character and we get to see him grow and from the beginning to the end I never once disliked him or something he did。 I hope if I ever have a son he'll be just like this character; big-hearted， smart， loyal and brave。 All of the characters were great and it didn't feel like any of them were lacking or one-sided even if they weren't featured as much。 The flow of the story and the writing is I loved it！ An extremely well-written story that navigates between crime and family drama。 Eli is a complex character and we get to see him grow and from the beginning to the end I never once disliked him or something he did。 I hope if I ever have a son he'll be just like this character; big-hearted， smart， loyal and brave。 All of the characters were great and it didn't feel like any of them were lacking or one-sided even if they weren't featured as much。 The flow of the story and the writing is smooth and I love how everything is circular and things from the beginning come back throughout the story several times so it's not forgotten and enriches the scenes。 I highly recommend this book！ 。。。more

Extraordinary in so many ways。 I finished it and for the first time since I was 10 and understood how little time I have to get through so many books， I felt compelled to start it over， to experience it again。 The story， the writing， the magic， I enjoyed the experience very much。

Philosophy， artistic prose， and magical realism all are tenants of this crime novel。 It’s the coming of age story that I actually want to read。 One of my favorite things about this book， upon reflection， is Dalton’s ability to structure the novel in a way that honored the key tenants。 The central plot is about two boys whose lives are impacted by the heroine trade in 1980’s Australia。 Whilst there are numerous underlying themes to distill， I’ll focus on a few that felt impactful to me。1 - Time （ Philosophy， artistic prose， and magical realism all are tenants of this crime novel。 It’s the coming of age story that I actually want to read。 One of my favorite things about this book， upon reflection， is Dalton’s ability to structure the novel in a way that honored the key tenants。 The central plot is about two boys whose lives are impacted by the heroine trade in 1980’s Australia。 Whilst there are numerous underlying themes to distill， I’ll focus on a few that felt impactful to me。1 - Time （which I consider separate from ‘Fate’）。 The idea that time is circular， that everything that happens and will happened has already happened。 The beginning is the end， the end is the beginning。 The whispers of your life can present in many forms， and if you listen to the whispers then there’s nothing the voice at the end of a red telephone can tell you that you don’t already know。2 - Perhaps because of #1， we already know most everything we will learn。 The knowledge of the universe is already inside of us， because we are a part of the universe。 We are stardust， and we are human。3 - Having and finding voice。 That very little is worth saying。 I found this to be interesting for a 450 page novel， especially one that wove in artistic and poetic tangents。 But the tangents are descriptive and create a world， a perspective， not a character narrative。 I highly recommend this captivating novel。 。。。more

4。5。 A real down under flavour to this story that’s partly based on an infamous Australian criminal and is also semi autobiographical。 Loved the mystical nature of the story as well as the characterisations。 Well written - moving， funny， philosophical and thrilling！ The ending was a fitting climax。

Fantastic - in many senses of the word。 This was clever， funny， outrageous and a rattling good yarn。 I feel that I know more about the Queensland drug scene than I ever needed to know， and I learnt it all in the company of a great cast of characters。 Eli and August will stay with me for a long time。
