Summary

For 45 years, William Leffler's Petroleum Refining in Nontechnical Language has been the go-to best seller for anyone needing to know the fundamentals of refining。 Fluid prose, easy-to-understand graphics, and helpful analogies (like the beer bottle principle) make the refining processing schemes clear。 Each chapter was carefully written in nontechnical language to give the reader a basic understanding of the refining industry。 The book can be used for self-study, as a classroom textbook, or as a quick reference。 As always, Leffler's classic unit-by-unit description follows the oil molecules from the oil patch through the refinery to the consumer。 In this edition, the industry's technologic progress is brought up to date。 In addition, Leffler adds a new chapter on the impact of hydraulic fracing on oil price setting in refining markets and another on competitive positioning。

Great book for those interested。 Despite the title, it's pretty technical language unless you were an engineer in college, but its still accessible。 You would have to be interested in refining to begin with, ie intellectually curious or have a professional interest, in order for this to be worth your while。 Great book for those interested。 Despite the title, it's pretty technical language unless you were an engineer in college, but its still accessible。 You would have to be interested in refining to begin with, ie intellectually curious or have a professional interest, in order for this to be worth your while。 。。。more

This book was set on my desk for each internship, and I never read more than a few chapters。 I figured it'd be a good time to get back into the industry mindset and review unit ops。 This book is good for a high level overview and definitely a great read for interns, who have little exposure to refinery op。 Glad to have finally read it, but I'm also well aware that this book does not go into great detail。 This book was set on my desk for each internship, and I never read more than a few chapters。 I figured it'd be a good time to get back into the industry mindset and review unit ops。 This book is good for a high level overview and definitely a great read for interns, who have little exposure to refinery op。 Glad to have finally read it, but I'm also well aware that this book does not go into great detail。 。。。more

I’m a civil engineer entering into the petroleum refining industry。 As such my info on petroleum is limited at best, however this book has thus far given me a tremendous amount of info on this subject, enough to be able to discuss the particulars with others in the field。 Highly recommended。

This book gave an excellent overview of petroleum refining without getting bogged down in minutiae or droning on in the style of dry reference tomes。 The author reminds us once in a while that he is human with a witty blurb here and there。 I read this book to get a grasp on terms like "cat cracker", "fractionation" and "isobutane" and I was completely satisfied with what I came away with。 I now have a good enough grasp on what goes on in the refining world that I can stop with the bewildered loo This book gave an excellent overview of petroleum refining without getting bogged down in minutiae or droning on in the style of dry reference tomes。 The author reminds us once in a while that he is human with a witty blurb here and there。 I read this book to get a grasp on terms like "cat cracker", "fractionation" and "isobutane" and I was completely satisfied with what I came away with。 I now have a good enough grasp on what goes on in the refining world that I can stop with the bewildered looks when those kinds of terms come up。 。。。more
