I really wanted to like this book, and for the first 1/3 I actually did。 I was sure it was going to be at least four stars。 But there's a couple things that really put me off。First of all, I can get with having multiple protagonists, or jumping into a side character's head briefly for another perspective。 There are no protagonists in this book, just a million side characters we keep jumping around to。 This makes it almost impossible to keep track of anybody, and it certainly didn't get me emotio I really wanted to like this book, and for the first 1/3 I actually did。 I was sure it was going to be at least four stars。 But there's a couple things that really put me off。First of all, I can get with having multiple protagonists, or jumping into a side character's head briefly for another perspective。 There are no protagonists in this book, just a million side characters we keep jumping around to。 This makes it almost impossible to keep track of anybody, and it certainly didn't get me emotionally invested in character。 It was almost like the author wouldn't let me。 every time I was feeling invest, I was yanked into another random personas head。Secondly; this book is set in extensively established universe。 World-building-wise, Star Wars has been built。 I'm familiar with it, who's reading this book that isn't? So much time is spent on exposition。 Lastly; the whole first third of the book (the part I liked) developed a catastrophe with mysterious origins。 So you would think that the book would then have are heroes figure out who the bad guys are, this in itself could've been an emotional hook for me。 I could speculate, I could follow the thread of mystery, if I couldn't keep track of all the Jedi's names at least I could keep track of their goal and be invested that they figure it out。 But, no, we quickly get in to the many perspective of the villains and their plans。 Not everything is revealed, but more than enough to make me loose interest, now I have even more people to keep track of and no longer have any sense of suspense。 Also, the villains are squabbling cartoons。 。。。more

WOW! Loved this new introduction to the world of Star Wars set way before all the canon we already know about。 It's such a unique way to expand and learn so much about the Jedi! WOW! This is a great start to an exciting new series! I’m giving this one 5 stars for the main reason that this FEELS like prime Star Wars to me。 I’ve read quite a few books, watched the movies, watched the shows, read the comics, surfed the Wookiepedia, and what all strings them together is the way they feel when being consumed: hopeful, resolving but complex, diverse, dark, humorous, and sad all in one。 I like the characters they’re leading with and it actually didn’t end the way I thought it would。 I listened to this as an audiobook and I’ve alw I’m giving this one 5 stars for the main reason that this FEELS like prime Star Wars to me。 I’ve read quite a few books, watched the movies, watched the shows, read the comics, surfed the Wookiepedia, and what all strings them together is the way they feel when being consumed: hopeful, resolving but complex, diverse, dark, humorous, and sad all in one。 I like the characters they’re leading with and it actually didn’t end the way I thought it would。 I listened to this as an audiobook and I’ve always loved the sound production in the more recent SW novels that add to the context。Overall, lots of little twists and nuggets of “oh sh*t did they really let that happen?” thrown into a web of episodic happenings, like good ol’ SW。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 This book was incredible。 It took a while to figure out who was who since it was such a big world with many interesting people。 The jedi were great people who helped in any way they could during such a disaster。 People looked up to them。 The Nihil were much feared but intriguing all the same。 This is a must read for Star Wars fans。

dnf at 18%That’s how far I got in one day and then just… never continued after that。 My digital loan expired, and to be honest? I don’t feel the want or the need to request it again。 Maybe someday, a long time off in the very far future, I’ll give it a second chance。 For now, though, I’d rather read books that hold my interest。

It has been a while since I’ve read a Star Wars novel。 Truth be told, I really enjoyed the various series in what was renamed after the Disney purchase of Lucas Films as the “Legends” universe。 various series in what was renamed after the Disney purchase of Lucas Films as the “Legends” universe。 However, since Disney took over and pretty much tried to erase twenty years of strong story building, character development, and classical moments, I found myself less interested in their attempt to build a new cannon as many other fans have struggled with。 Now, I am taking a tentative step back into the world of Star Wars to see if the first High Republic novel delivers the excitement and creativity that Disney is desperately hoping it will。The High Republic is a new Star Wars series set in the golden age of the Jedi, when Jedi knights served as the guardians of justice and peace throughout the galaxy。 It is set 200 years before the Skywalker era and 800 years following the fall of the old republic。 This series has been planned and developed with a team of writers over several years, initially called “Project Luminous”。 It is expected to be a multi-arc storyline, including adult, young adult, middle grade, and young reader novels and comics。“The Light of the Jedi” is the first adult novel, kicking off what is hoped to be a successful immersion into a new Star Wars era。 It begins with an action-packed hyperspace incident that leads to a massive rescue mission taking up for the first 120 pages of the book。 It serves the primary purpose of presenting a critical historical event, called “The Great Disaster” and introducing the Nihil, an organized group of evil space pirates and the new bad guys facing off with the heroic Jedi。There are some good moments in those pages。 However, it also serves to introduce a large cast that almost requires the use of a score card to track all of them。 It’s almost a too many at once, overwhelming the reader at moments while being immersed into a new era, locations, and political situations。 I am not sure that introducing so many characters at once was the best approach, but things settle down a bit during the last two-thirds of the novel and it becomes easier to get to know some of the various characters better, their roles, and personalities。Once the incident is initiated, the story is told at a fairly fast place, playing out over several plotlines that run parallel and cross over as they build to a decent climax。 Soule’s style tends to be clinical and overly technical at times, erroring on the side of excessive descriptions when it comes to world building, ships, and weapons。 At the same time, it was also a helpful tool when he used it to describe character’s histories and backgrounds。 The good news is that the more I got into the book, I was able to adjust, and the less those some of those things bothered me。 Because of the high volume of characters, it was hard to really connect and build a good rapport with many of them。 Although most of the action scenes were interesting and involving, it sometimes took away from getting to know the characters on a personal level。 Still, I found myself liking the calm and patience of Jedi Master Avar Kriss, the creative ways that Jedi Elzar Mann tried to adjust the rules of proper Jedi behavior, and the surprising skills of the aged Jedi Porter Engle。 His wisdom and unique skills were a pleasant and enjoyable surprise。When it comes to the Nihil, the space pirates and antagonists for our Jedi good guys, I found myself a bit disappointed。 Although their militaristic structure built with soldiers for hire and professional criminals was interesting and creative, it still didn’t come across as being a strong enough opponent to challenge the skills of the Jedi。 Not at least in my mind。 Without special powers or abilities, they are just not on the same level with those having Jedi powers。 They may last for a while and provide some conflict, but I am struggling with their ability to provide a strong enough level of conflict to challenge and threaten the Jedi on a large scale。 But we’ll see… We’re only one book in and it’s still early。 Overall, this was a decent start to the series。 Not great but not bad either。 It’s important to understand that being the first book in a new era series there was a lot that it had to accomplish。 Introducing a new time period, new characters, and new villains is a tough task。 Not to mention several developing storylines set-up during the last 30 pages of the book that are intended to play out in future books。 The good news is that my interest is peaked enough to get me to read the next one to see how things progress。 My rating - 3。5 out of 5 stars。 。。。more

Light of the Jedi is a start to a new era in Star Wars。 Both legends and canon have not touched this era。 I was excited to read this since the announcement。 This story was an exciting opening。 It was fun and felt very Star Warsish。 There are a few issues I have, but books are never perfect, right? The first half was great, I enjoyed it very much; the tempo was great, but I found it really hard to finish the second part as the adrenaline slowed down。 Because of this being the first book in this era, there is a lot of development in this book。 As readers, we learn many things。 We learn about the state of the galaxy, who is currently in charge of the Republic, the antagonists, and the state of the Jedi Order。 The author explained these well, and it did not feel as if it held the book back。 I realize the first book in a series can feel a little overwhelmed because of all this new information, so I try to give these set up books a benefit of the doubt。 The alternative way of visualizing the force was one of my favorite things in this book。 The author explains how each Jedi reads the force differently。 My favorite one was how Master Avar Kriss visualized the force as music。 This was something, as a Star Wars nerd, I found interesting and would love to read deeper into this information。 Another way was color。 This was my second favorite。 I mean, we describe music as color, why can’t the force? There are so many new characters。 I feel all but maybe the Nihil (or the antagonists in this novel) were well rounded and can not wait to see more character development with these characters。 It took a while for me to know these characters。 Again, I am aware this is a startup book for not only this series, but for this era as well。 The Nihil for me felt flat。 They did not impress me as I would have hoped。 Their ways were confusing for me, no matter how many times the author explained them and their hierarchy。 I am hoping the series will develop the Nihil in the following books。 The setting in this novel is everywhere。 There are new planets, planets Star Wars nerds have heard, but the state of the planet is different, the outer rims, and space。 To those who are new to Star Wars may not have thought there was enough development or description, and as a reader, I can understand。 As a Star Wars nerd, I felt there was enough to understand without drawing out the story。 I would recommend this book for any Star Wars nerd who loves the books and loves the eras predating Episode 1。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Disappointed。 This book kicks off the next big chapter in the burgeoning Star Wars galaxy。  But unlike the Mandalorian, which stays close but plays in the background of the Skywalker saga, this goes back in time hundreds of years before Phantom Menace and keeps us mostly in the Outer Rim。 What should have been a hallmark moment for the franchise, a whole new beginning to re-inspire and re-engage fans (and yes, that could also commercially span new books, games, toys, and maybe a new Disney+ seri Disappointed。 This book kicks off the next big chapter in the burgeoning Star Wars galaxy。  But unlike the Mandalorian, which stays close but plays in the background of the Skywalker saga, this goes back in time hundreds of years before Phantom Menace and keeps us mostly in the Outer Rim。 What should have been a hallmark moment for the franchise, a whole new beginning to re-inspire and re-engage fans (and yes, that could also commercially span new books, games, toys, and maybe a new Disney+ series) just fell flat for me。 Maybe it was because there were so many new characters that it was hard to keep track of them。 It times it felt like the goal was more about jamming the universe full of new characters without devoting enough time for us to get to know any of them (or frankly even give a shit about them。  When one major character was killed — sorry for the vague spoiler — it didn’t hit me at all be honestly I don’t even really remember who she/he was)。Maybe it was the lack of imagination in the evil characters behind their plot to manipulate hyperspace travel lanes。 It felt like a lesser version of Kylo Ren with hints of father issues (haven’t we already been to this party?) leading a crew of three cookie cutter villains and their troops in a series of hostile space battles。 There were hints of something deeper and darker at the end that almost was intriguing, but frankly not enough for me to come back for Book 2。 And where are the strong female characters? There’s a Jedi Mastet, sure, and a Chancellor, both women, but they seem like vague cardboard cutouts that are always calm and serene, rising above the chaos around them with an irritatingly soothing Headspace vibe。 Where is the next Princess Leia?  Bring back the fiery females to give some new role models for my daughters and my son!Or maybe it was the hype surrounding this new story arc that just didn’t live up to its potential。 The High Republic is connected across a series of adult, young adult, and kids books, arguably a massive understanding like what Marvel had done with the MCU。 And so for something of this size and scale, I expected so much more。 Especially coming from Lucasfilm, which has single-handedly shifted the direction and momentum of the franchise with 2 seasons of Mandalorian achieving the impossible of bringing back core fans (like me!) AND getting new casual fans engaged in this fantastical world。 If Hogh Republic is where Lucasfilm has staked its claim for the future, it really makes you wonder if Mando was just a fluke or if this  was just a poor start to what should have been one big pile of awesomeness。 Don’t get me wrong。 I’m still ready for the next Star Wars series on Disney+, can’t wait for Mando season 3 AND Book of Fett,  and bring on the retail fan shopping event on May the 4th。 But when the next installment of this new series hits bookshelves, I’ll take a hard pass。  。。。more

Light of the Jedi serves as an interesting, but often overwhelming, introduction to the High Republic era of Star Wars。 A long time ago is now even longer ago and Soule has a lot of world-building to cover。 The problem is that he stretches the story too thin by trying to cover too much。 Many, many characters are introduced。 Many locations are visited。 Many relationships are established。 None of them get enough time individually for the reader to differentiate between them in the beginning。 Once Light of the Jedi serves as an interesting, but often overwhelming, introduction to the High Republic era of Star Wars。 A long time ago is now even longer ago and Soule has a lot of world-building to cover。 The problem is that he stretches the story too thin by trying to cover too much。 Many, many characters are introduced。 Many locations are visited。 Many relationships are established。 None of them get enough time individually for the reader to differentiate between them in the beginning。 Once the initial disaster abates, about a third of the way in, you start to get your feet under you concerning who’s who。 It’s at this point that the novel shifts to feature our villains and the problem begins anew。 The final third of the book was much more enjoyable。 I had a grasp on at least the main characters on all sides and the conflict of the novel was driving toward conclusion。 The finale left me with many questions and a thirst for more so in the end it accomplished its mission: I’ve preordered the next book in the series。Pros:+ Interesting villains。 Not your typical Star Wars enemies。 Lots of mystery to unpack。 + Good Jedi characters (there are just a lot of them)。 Thought was given to the way each one touches the force and it’s fun to explore that。+ Pretty strong finish。 Nothing is more disappointing than reading a good story with an awful ending。 I can tolerate an average story with a good ending like this though。 Cons:- Too many characters。 Most were great, but we didn’t need them all in the first book。- The pacing。 You can’t have all action all the time, but the parts not spent in conflict seemed to drag。 - The “love” story。 Soule makes fun of a character early in the novel for reading a trashy romance story。。。 and then he included one of his own。 It’s minor, more a seed to plant in the reader’s head than an actual plot line, but it was so poorly written that it stuck out like a lightsaber。 Leave the furtive glances between star crossed lovers in the YA gulag where they belong。 Yuck。Summary: Given that this book is the springboard for a huge new era in Star Wars storytelling, I can forgive its shortcomings and try to enjoy it for its strength: good characters that lay the foundation for future stories in this new Star Wars past。 But the novel suffers for having too many of those great characters and not having enough time to attach to more than a couple of them。 Combine that with the disjointed pacing and this novel is solidly average。 Cavan Scott has a lot of room for improvement in the next installment due in June。3/5 。。。more

Definitely one of the best Star Wars novels。I love how we actually get introduced to the villain like in the 100th page, how Charles Soule starts giving you details about the events each chapter。 As a Star Wars fan who doesn't really like the things Disney's done with this universe, I can say this book is (by a lot) the best Star Wars content we've got since Episode 3 went out, maybe from exception of the last Clone Wars' season。I also like how we have lots of references and we get characters at Definitely one of the best Star Wars novels。I love how we actually get introduced to the villain like in the 100th page, how Charles Soule starts giving you details about the events each chapter。 As a Star Wars fan who doesn't really like the things Disney's done with this universe, I can say this book is (by a lot) the best Star Wars content we've got since Episode 3 went out, maybe from exception of the last Clone Wars' season。I also like how we have lots of references and we get characters at least I, never expected。 This is a very different thing from the typical Star Wars movies but, awesome! 。。。more
