This beloved story -first published more than fifty years ago- introduces readers to Milo and his adventures in the Lands Beyond。

For Milo, everything’s a bore。 When a tollbooth mysteriously appears in his room, he drives through only because he’s got nothing better to do。 But on the other side, things seem different。 Milo visits the Island of Conclusions (you get there by jumping), learns about time from a ticking watchdog named Tock, and even embarks on a quest to rescue Rhyme and Reason! Somewhere along the way, Milo realizes something astonishing。 Life is far from dull。 In fact, it’s exciting beyond his wildest dreams。 。 。 。

A wonderfully fun book for all ages with great messages spread throughout。

All those who read this book as children have a different relationship to the text as adults。 As children, the prose is funny, educational, and challenging。 Yet, the imaginative story keeps the reader attentive to the main character's journey。 As an adult, I believe the author is a brilliant wordsmith。 The nuggets of wisdom dispersed through the narrative can lend to building character and also remind the older reader of the value of wasting words and common sense。 All those who read this book as children have a different relationship to the text as adults。 As children, the prose is funny, educational, and challenging。 Yet, the imaginative story keeps the reader attentive to the main character's journey。 As an adult, I believe the author is a brilliant wordsmith。 The nuggets of wisdom dispersed through the narrative can lend to building character and also remind the older reader of the value of wasting words and common sense。 。。。more

This book has always been one of my childhood favorites。 When rereading it I quite literally finished it in about 3 hours, overjoyed that it was as good as I remembered。 Sure, it might be cheesy and at times silly, but it provided me with a pretty good amount of rhetorical language for a 9 year old。 Everything is so literal and all the characters are very serious in everything they say。 There are so many places I’d absolutely love to visit or see and it just seems like a lovely world to live in— This book has always been one of my childhood favorites。 When rereading it I quite literally finished it in about 3 hours, overjoyed that it was as good as I remembered。 Sure, it might be cheesy and at times silly, but it provided me with a pretty good amount of rhetorical language for a 9 year old。 Everything is so literal and all the characters are very serious in everything they say。 There are so many places I’d absolutely love to visit or see and it just seems like a lovely world to live in—at least for me。 。。。more

I reread this book after 15 ish years and was like there’s no way this was as good as I remember。 I was wrong!!

This is a good example of how an author can work on a specific subject and never ever get lost in it。 You start somewhere and he finished just at the end。 As if you had the travel with the boy yourself, only an imaginary thought。 What a beautiful piece to read。 Nonetheless I read the Persian translated version by great translator: shahla Tahmasbi

This book is a classic, fun read。 I first read it in 2nd grade and have read it multiple times since then。 It's a good book to remind us that not all things are as they seem, and to help rediscover the excitement and imagination in our minds。 This book is a classic, fun read。 I first read it in 2nd grade and have read it multiple times since then。 It's a good book to remind us that not all things are as they seem, and to help rediscover the excitement and imagination in our minds。 。。。more

Listened to with my husband。 We have a family member who is an English teacher and highly recommended we read it。 Great story and word play。 I understand why he recommends it。

Lots of fun with language in this imaginary world。

“The dumbing down of America is proceeding apace。 Jester’s allegorical monsters have become all too real。 The Demons of Ignorance, the Gross Exaggeration (whose wicked teeth were made ‘only to mangle the truth’), and the shabby Threadbare Excuse are inside the walls of the Kingdom of Wisdom, while the Gorgons of Hate and Malice, the Overbearing Know-it-all, and most especially the Triple Demons of Compromise are already established in high office all over the world。” Maurice Sendak’s Foreword。“… “The dumbing down of America is proceeding apace。 Jester’s allegorical monsters have become all too real。 The Demons of Ignorance, the Gross Exaggeration (whose wicked teeth were made ‘only to mangle the truth’), and the shabby Threadbare Excuse are inside the walls of the Kingdom of Wisdom, while the Gorgons of Hate and Malice, the Overbearing Know-it-all, and most especially the Triple Demons of Compromise are already established in high office all over the world。” Maurice Sendak’s Foreword。“…what could be more important than doing unimportant things? If you stop to do enough of them, you’ll never get to where you’re going。” Pg 212“If you only do the easy and useless jobs, you’ll never have to worry about the important ones which are so difficult。 You just won’t have the time。” Pg 213“But I could never have done it…without everyone’s help。” “That may be true,” said Reason gravely, “but you had the courage to try; and what you can do is often simply a matter of what you will do。” Pg 247 。。。more

I never read this book growing up, so my friend had me read it now。 It was a sweet book about how you should live in the now, and not take things for granted, no matter how insignificant or small they may seem。 It’s also about how without illusions we would have no reality and how important thinking and using you’re worlds wisely is。 Lol I got all philosophical, but I enjoyed it。 Even if it took a while to get the point across。

I grew up on kids' books written anywhere between the 1920s and 1970s。 I cut my teeth on Mr Popper's Penguins, My Father's Dragon, The Farthest-Away Mountain, Half-Magic, Alice in Wonderland and other psychedelic classics-- so while I understand many people remember this one fondly, I couldn't get more than a couple chapters in before I abandoned it as, unfortunately, just another overly-clever , overly-silly Yellow Submarine trip through metaphors and morality。 I grew up on kids' books written anywhere between the 1920s and 1970s。 I cut my teeth on Mr Popper's Penguins, My Father's Dragon, The Farthest-Away Mountain, Half-Magic, Alice in Wonderland and other psychedelic classics-- so while I understand many people remember this one fondly, I couldn't get more than a couple chapters in before I abandoned it as, unfortunately, just another overly-clever , overly-silly Yellow Submarine trip through metaphors and morality。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I don't remember this too well from my childhood, and I probably didn't appreciate the humour of the puns and characters back then as I do now。This book is a literary English nerd's dream, all things of words and play on them and a moral at the end。Very happy to have rediscovered this book after 40+years。 I don't remember this too well from my childhood, and I probably didn't appreciate the humour of the puns and characters back then as I do now。This book is a literary English nerd's dream, all things of words and play on them and a moral at the end。Very happy to have rediscovered this book after 40+years。 。。。more

This book was great! I look at things from a different angle now from all the things it has taught me。 And although this may not be your favorite type of style of fiction, you can definitely find something you like inside!Thank you Norton Juster

My childhood!! The wordplay and silly characters and love of gnawledge just makes the book so resonant for me, and I remember loving and laughing at the characters when I was little。 The dodecahedron quote was my senior quote, and the silence quote is one of my favorite lines in any book。 I wish I could read it for the first time again。

Re-read upon spilling a mop bucket and trying to describe the situation by using the scene where Milo has to move the pile of sand using tweezers。 This book held up as an adult! A very pleasant re-read for being at camp。
