In praise of the firstborn。 While others may come, and the same milestones will be met, they will always be the first。 (and no。。。 pregnancy hormones did not make me cry while reading this to our first born as we await the birth of our second。。。)

Looking for books that talk about new babies。 This one vaguely does at the very end, but more about the oldest being special for being the first to do lots of things。 Very sweet, made my husband and I both tear up, although maybe largely because there is a sweet dog through all of it including the new babies, and our treasured pup passed away during this pregnancy。

A great story to read to your first born child。

Baby milestones, a focus on the first child being first, and a mixed race family being portrayed as totally normal。

Moses and Felix

A book reaffirming the primacy of primogeniture (as if first-borns really needed that)。 Still, cute。

Kris

Very sweet book to reassure an oldest child of their special place in the family

This is obviously a really sweet way to introduce to a first child to the idea of a sibling coming soon, although the ending is written in such a way that this might not be the case, or not for awhile so it still applies。 The story is wonderful as always, and I loved the beautiful pictures of family, especially since the child is biracial。 I love the idea of involving the older child in helping to teach a new baby all the things he knew first。 We may have to add this to our at-home library in th This is obviously a really sweet way to introduce to a first child to the idea of a sibling coming soon, although the ending is written in such a way that this might not be the case, or not for awhile so it still applies。 The story is wonderful as always, and I loved the beautiful pictures of family, especially since the child is biracial。 I love the idea of involving the older child in helping to teach a new baby all the things he knew first。 We may have to add this to our at-home library in the future。 。。。more

Gentle and thoughtful story about all the "firsts" as a child grows。 The little dog cavorting throughout the pages was cute。 Gentle and thoughtful story about all the "firsts" as a child grows。 The little dog cavorting throughout the pages was cute。 。。。more

Lovely reassuring ode to the firstborn。 Would be great for storytime a a new mums group。 Also good as an at-home read to prepare a child for the arrival of a sibling。

You were the first is a touching story that goes through all of the "first's" parents and babies go through as their first born grows up。 It creates a nostalgic feeling and makes the first-born feel special。 This book is good to read when expecting a sibling and wanting to show the first child that they are still loved and important。 The illustrations are beautiful and fit well with the story。 It was a cute book and would be good and relevant to read to children and students。 You were the first is a touching story that goes through all of the "first's" parents and babies go through as their first born grows up。 It creates a nostalgic feeling and makes the first-born feel special。 This book is good to read when expecting a sibling and wanting to show the first child that they are still loved and important。 The illustrations are beautiful and fit well with the story。 It was a cute book and would be good and relevant to read to children and students。 。。。more

A really cute book。 I really liked it but my 2。5 year old wasn't very into it。 Probably better for a preschooler about to be a big brother or sister。 A really cute book。 I really liked it but my 2。5 year old wasn't very into it。 Probably better for a preschooler about to be a big brother or sister。 。。。more

Ages 2 and up。 A great book for any firstborn child facing the anxiety of sharing the attention with a new sibling, this book reassures them that they will always have been the first。 Set in an interracial family with an Asian mother and white father。

Kelly

Such a sweet book celebrating firstborns, and lovely pictures, too。

Caitlinleah

Cute illustrations。 Sweet message on the surface but I can’t help but think it’s setting up siblings for jealousy and comparing。 Not my favorite new sibling book。

Nice book for presenting the idea of another kid coming but affirming the importance of the one you've already got。 Haven't used it for that purpose, so I can't speak to how effective it is in that regard, but it was a sweet and cosy book that manages to fold the idea of future siblings into the mix while still centring the experience of the kid who was the "first"。 I think it's a good book for kids around 2 as well, because it shows all these things they've done when they were younger as well a Nice book for presenting the idea of another kid coming but affirming the importance of the one you've already got。 Haven't used it for that purpose, so I can't speak to how effective it is in that regard, but it was a sweet and cosy book that manages to fold the idea of future siblings into the mix while still centring the experience of the kid who was the "first"。 I think it's a good book for kids around 2 as well, because it shows all these things they've done when they were younger as well as a few things that may be yet to come in simple, straightforward ways that hold interest。 Liked the choice to focus on an inter-racial couple as well。 。。。more

This is a great book to read to a child who is expecting to be an older sibling。 This book explains to them that they were there first and that their parents will always love them the same。 Nothing will change if another baby comes into the family。

I wonderful picture book about the first child in the family。 I love how it stresses that the child has come before and done it all therefore has a special place in the family。 And though this can seem like the older child is in some way 'better', I don't think it does。 It doesn't state that the children potentially coming after aren't wonderful as well。 Only, that with the first child parents experience the world of parenthood for the first time。 This book is more to make sure that the oldest c I wonderful picture book about the first child in the family。 I love how it stresses that the child has come before and done it all therefore has a special place in the family。 And though this can seem like the older child is in some way 'better', I don't think it does。 It doesn't state that the children potentially coming after aren't wonderful as well。 Only, that with the first child parents experience the world of parenthood for the first time。 This book is more to make sure that the oldest child is not forgotten with the addition of the rest of the children。 。。。more

A sweet story aimed at a first-born dealing with a new child in the family。

Lovely celebration of the firstborn child that takes the reader through the early, growing years of a child and reassures that however many siblings come along, they will always be the first。 Lovely。

Alicia

The author of Sarah plain and tall’s children’s book: just adorable。

Angelina

Lovely illustrations

As someone who had two children from day one this is not a book I can relate to at all but it is so so sweet。

This book is really sweet and is about a child who is about to become a big brother! What a sweet time of reflection tonight to read this book with my first born, now 4。 She was delighted as we compared the characters to our family, human and dog alike。 What a great book for connecting to your children。 Truly a gift。

Gwen

Perfect book to get your first born ready for a new sibling。

I love that this book focuses on the first child's experiences, rather than a pregnancy, or future siblings。 As someone who is currently expanding our family through fostering/adoption, introducing my daughter to new siblings through picture books has been difficult since so many center around a mother's pregnancy (which is absent)。 That the family is also transracial is welcome as well!
