Summary

The instant #1 New York Times bestselling mystery and Reese Witherspoon Book Club pick that’s captivated more than a million readers about a woman searching for the truth about her husband’s disappearance…at any cost。

Before Owen Michaels disappears, he manages to smuggle a note to his beloved wife of one year: Protect her。 Despite her confusion and fear, Hannah Hall knows exactly to whom the note refers: Owen’s sixteen-year-old daughter, Bailey。 Bailey, who lost her mother tragically as a child。 Bailey, who wants absolutely nothing to do with her new stepmother。

As Hannah’s increasingly desperate calls to Owen go unanswered; as the FBI arrests Owen’s boss; as a US Marshal and FBI agents arrive at her Sausalito home unannounced, Hannah quickly realizes her husband isn’t who he said he was。 And that Bailey just may hold the key to figuring out Owen’s true identity—and why he really disappeared。

Hannah and Bailey set out to discover the truth, together。 But as they start putting together the pieces of Owen’s past, they soon realize they are also building a new future。 One neither Hannah nor Bailey could have anticipated。

Owen Michaels, single father to 16-year-old Bailey, never dated。 Since his wife's death 10 years ago Bailey has been his entire focus。 But when he meets Hannah and they fall in love, Hannah feels equally invested in Bailey's welfare, even though Bailey's view on getting a new stepmother is "no thanks。" Still, they set up a reasonably workable household; Owen and Hannah are very much in love and Bailey might be getting accustomed to the new set up。 Then Owen disappears leaving a note for Hannah s Owen Michaels, single father to 16-year-old Bailey, never dated。 Since his wife's death 10 years ago Bailey has been his entire focus。 But when he meets Hannah and they fall in love, Hannah feels equally invested in Bailey's welfare, even though Bailey's view on getting a new stepmother is "no thanks。" Still, they set up a reasonably workable household; Owen and Hannah are very much in love and Bailey might be getting accustomed to the new set up。 Then Owen disappears leaving a note for Hannah saying "Protect her" and another note for Bailey (saying "You know the things about me that matter") along with a large amount of money。 Owen is clearly in some kind of trouble and Hannah and Bailey go looking for him。 Their search leads them to find out some secrets he has kept from both of them。 The plot is exciting and the characters fully realized。 Beyond the thriller aspect, the novel explores the nature of love of different kinds - romantic, parental, sibling。 How far would you go to protect someone you love? What if different people who love that person have different ideas of what is protection and what is harm? A good read and a thought-provoking novel。 。。。more

It's bittersweet, my least favorite type of sweet。I thought it was a quick read - pretty simple diction, pretty simple plot, all wrapped up nicely。 It has less to do with the disappearance of the husband and more on the relationship between stepmother and stepdaughter - the disappearance is what made then get closer。 That small brush at the end hurt me a bit。 "All the could be boys still love you" he says, while still wearing the ring??? Talk about a throat punch。 But it was sweet that Bailey calls her Mom now。 Even though it took all this mess for them to get here, the sacrifices, never seeing the dad again, they made it and are stronger for it。 I don't know, there are so many negative stereotypes for stepparent/stepchild relationships so I really liked that aspect of this book, that this relationship is the focus。 I didn't love it, but I didn't hate it。 More mystery than thrilling, but it focused more on how stepparent/stepchild stay together without the "glue" of their common relative。 。。。more

This was my first Laura Dave book and I really enjoyed it。 I thought it was a page-turner that kept me interested。 Where there wholes in the story? Yes, but that didn't matter to me because I enjoyed the story so much。 Do you really know the man you married? That was the theme I hooked onto and kept reading to find out who Owen really was。 His daughter Baily kind of got on my nerves at times, but her character growth was integral to the story。 An interesting mystery and definitely a page-turner。 This was my first Laura Dave book and I really enjoyed it。 I thought it was a page-turner that kept me interested。 Where there wholes in the story? This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 This book was entertaining and an easy read。 But not my typical genre。 I don’t love suspense and so I found myself needing to pause in between chapters to calm my nerves a bit of the anticipation of what could happen next。 I can’t quite understand Hannah just being okay and content with the way things played out。 Perhaps what she really wanted to be was a mother to Bailey bc she didn’t have a present mother, but to accept and move on, at least without more descriptive emotions, felt strange to m This book was entertaining and an easy read。 But not my typical genre。 I don’t love suspense and so I found myself needing to pause in between chapters to calm my nerves a bit of the anticipation of what could happen next。 I can’t quite understand Hannah just being okay and content with the way things played out。 Perhaps what she really wanted to be was a mother to Bailey bc she didn’t have a present mother, but to accept and move on, at least without more descriptive emotions, felt strange to me。 。。。more

I wish Good Reads allowed tenths when rating books because The Last Thing He Told Me would cruise right in closer to 4/5 stars。 This was a book club pick so I'm averaging out, ok。 Anyways, it was an incredibly gripping start but as you move your way through this novel, you're struck with "wtf is happening"。 It's like you got no information and then suddenly, 3/4 in, the details come in a rush with no relation to earlier points。 And ok - SPOILER - as if the main dude (wink wink) would just never I wish Good Reads allowed tenths when rating books because The Last Thing He Told Me would cruise right in closer to 4/5 stars。 This was a book club pick so I'm averaging out, ok。 Anyways, it was an incredibly gripping start but as you move your way through this novel, you're struck with "wtf is happening"。 It's like you got no information and then suddenly, 3/4 in, the details come in a rush with no relation to earlier points。 And ok - SPOILER - as if the main dude (wink wink) would just never come back!? I enjoyed the actual story but was soooo frustrated with the repetitive writing style。 The writing style was frustrating。 The writing style was so frustrating that I wanted to throw the book down。 The writing was so frustrating that I wanted to throw the book down and call up the book editor to ask why they were asleep at the wheel on this one。 The very wheel they were paid to steer。 AHHHH

I enjoyed the story, but found the author’s writing style a little annoying, especially the overuse of an especially trendy expression, “he/she’s not wrong。”

Karen

A domestic drama but unbelievable

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 This was… fine。 I didn’t hate it。 But it is forgettable and not one that I’d think to recommend。 It’s a mystery of sorts but I wasn’t on the edge of my seat trying to figure out what was going on。 I found myself re reading certain parts toward the end because the family tree was a bit confusing especially the way it was written。 Hannah was an interesting narrator but I found Bailey annoying - I guess that was the point given she was painted as a moody 16 year old。 But maybe her POV would’ve been This was… fine。 I didn’t hate it。 But it is forgettable and not one that I’d think to recommend。 It’s a mystery of sorts but I wasn’t on the edge of my seat trying to figure out what was going on。 I found myself re reading certain parts toward the end because the family tree was a bit confusing especially the way it was written。 Hannah was an interesting narrator but I found Bailey annoying - I guess that was the point given she was painted as a moody 16 year old。 But maybe her POV would’ve been better。 Overall I didn’t really connect with the characters and thought the first half was pretty slow 。。。more

Ця книга була досить хорошою до моменту розвязки історії。 Дуже розчаруваний закінченням книги。 Я буквально гортав книгу в очікуванні нових сторінок, ніби це ще не може бути кінець。

I really wanted this to be better than it was。 Don’t get me wrong, it was fine。 In my opinion, it took way too long to get to the “meat” of the story; the beginning dragged on and on and I felt frustrated by that。 Overall, I liked the book and the ending was pretty sweet。

I keep going back and forth between a three star and a 4 star, so maybe 3。5 stars? I’ve heard and read many reviews, some raving about this book and others saying it’s not worth the hype。 So I went in with 0 expectations。 The beginning of the book had me。 It was fast paced, and exciting, and couldn’t wait to read it and discover what the mystery was。 However by the second half of the book that momentum was lost and I had a hard time finishing it because it became a bit boring。 On top of that the I keep going back and forth between a three star and a 4 star, so maybe 3。5 stars? I was told I won this book in one of the giveaways and was asked to write a review when I was done reading it, it was automatically added to my "currently reading" list (which I updated), but I never actually received the book。 I was told I won this book in one of the giveaways and was asked to write a review when I was done reading it, it was automatically added to my "currently reading" list (which I updated), but I never actually received the book。 。。。more

The eternal question if you truly know someone and how well you know them in the end? Do we only know what others allow us to know? To what extent the past of someone is of importance to the person they are together? I was captivated by the story for about the first 1/3, then I got bored。 It may be a genre problem, though。 I like mysteries and thrillers, which I was hoping this would sort of resemble, but the "investigation" piece was really slow-moving and I didn't find a likable character along the way。 There was also a lot of dwelling on the emotion of the situation, which is not really my style of story。 Though, I thought the writing was decent and I liked the bay area setting。 I was captivated by the story for about the first 1/3, then I got bored。 It may be a genre problem, though。 I like mysteries and thrillers, which I was hoping this would sort of resemble, but the "investigation" piece was really slow-moving and I didn't find a likable character along the way。 There was also a lot of dwelling on the emotion of the situation, which is not really my style of story。 Though, I thought the writing was decent and I liked the bay area setting。 。。。more

Such a fast paced and easy to read book。 Grips you very early on。 I was at a point in this book where I actually struggled to put it down。I found the sacrifice for love in this book beautiful and not a story you get to see very often in western based novels。 I cried after reading this book feeling the sadness of the main characters and taking time to understand how love can be so painful and pure。 Very easy read and enjoyable read。

I loved the first 75% of this book, but found the last quarter less exciting!Regardless it was an easy summer read that I really enjoyed。

deborah wilding

Engaging story that moved fast and was hard to put down。There were a few niggling annoying bits, like how did the main character have such great detective skills!?! But I find there is normally some sense of that in these types of books- it’s more about how much I wanted to keep reading and how it got me thinking。Really decent read, with some great twists and fairly conservative too, nothing too racy or shocking which was refreshing!

Justyna Brzeska

Książka, która ewidentnie miała zamysł trzymania czytelnika w napięciu - z niepowodzeniem。 Ot, powieść jak tysiące innych。

It started out great- fast paced & great plot, but lost me around 65-70%。 It felt like everything slowed down but not in an interesting rich development way? Perhaps that is just me not vibing with the overall theme that really comes to light around then (family/children focused。)3。5 ⭐️‘s - I really liked most of this book but the end fell short。 Also I would consider it a mystery/drama, not a thriller; there were *some* suspenseful parts but they were few and far between。
