Summary

THE BESTSELLER THAT DEFINED AN AGE

'Everything, somehow, fit together; some sly and benevolent Providence was revealing itself by degrees and I felt myself trembling on the brink of a fabulous discovery, as though any morning it was all going to come together---my future, my past, the whole of my life---and I was going to sit up in bed like a thunderbolt and say oh! oh! oh!'

Under the influence of a charismatic classics professor, a group of clever, eccentric misfits at a New England college discover a way of thought and life a world away from their banal contemporaries。 But their search for the transcendent leads them down a dangerous path, beyond human constructs of morality。

I really do have two sides: reading about class from the perspective of a classist, and from the perspective of a poor marxist。 。。。more

Bravo。 Donna Tartt, what a genius。 The writing was absolutely gorgeous and captivating。 The characters were deeply unlikeable, just as I'm sure she intended。 It is satire, the characters are superficial and pretentious and straight up crazy。 And that's the thing about them!

I should have gone with a physical copy。 This was another time when the author narrating their book does it a disservice。 Her voice didn't fit the characters for me。 It may have affected the reading experience。 I don't typically enjoy an audiobook with multiple narrations if they cannot do a good job distinguishing between characters。 I am telling you 22 hours of audio with this。。。 The idea of this book was fascinating, and maybe I Would have enjoyed it more in a physical format。 Some work could I should have gone with a physical copy。 This was another time when the author narrating their book does it a disservice。 Her voice didn't fit the characters for me。 It may have affected the reading experience。 I don't typically enjoy an audiobook with multiple narrations if they cannot do a good job distinguishing between characters。 I am telling you 22 hours of audio with this。。。 The idea of this book was fascinating, and maybe I Would have enjoyed it more in a physical format。 Some work could have improved the delivery, but it wasn't terrible。Overall I am stuck in the middle at a solid 3 star。 。。。more

I just had to read the OG dark academia book and it was everything I hoped for plus more。 I was not expecting such a brilliant writing style, but just the aesthetic which this book is tied to。 The Secret History interestingly provides commentary on many things that the dark academia aesthetic it spawned is criticised for, such as elitism。The book follows Richard Papen, a working class student who joins a small Greek class, taught under the influence of a charismatic professor。Donna Tartt's prose I just had to read the OG dark academia book and it was everything I hoped for plus more。 I was not expecting such a brilliant writing style, but just the aesthetic which this book is tied to。 The Secret History interestingly provides commentary on many things that the dark academia aesthetic it spawned is criticised for, such as elitism。The book follows Richard Papen, a working class student who joins a small Greek class, taught under the influence of a charismatic professor。Donna Tartt's prose is beyond incredible, laying out parallels with classical literature。 Though many seem to think our protagonist is bland, I feel that is supposed to be the whole point。 He is just a vehicle for the reader to consume the plot。 At one point he describes himself as a bystander - and that is what he is - someone from outside trying to fit himself in with the rest of the group。 Its the reason why throughout the novel so much vital information is purposefully withheld from him (and by extension the reader)。 Richard is an unreliable narrator - embellishing details according to his state of mind。Whilst the characters actions can very much be understood, they become increasingly morally irreprehensible。 Tartt masters building tension in-between characters, where saying one thing out of place can set off an entire chain of events。One of my fave books this year, definitely will be checking out her other works。 。。。more

The Secret History was not my cup of tea。 I think objectively it was a well-written story with well-written characters and an interesting premise。 I just didn’t find it particularly engaging。There are several passages with exquisite imagery and writing, and Tartt is excellent at creating the voice of the narrator。 However, I put it down in the middle and almost didn’t pick it back up。 Even though the plot inherently creates suspense (which was eventually enough to make me keep reading) I had lit The Secret History was not my cup of tea。 I think objectively it was a well-written story with well-written characters and an interesting premise。 I just didn’t find it particularly engaging。There are several passages with exquisite imagery and writing, and Tartt is excellent at creating the voice of the narrator。 However, I put it down in the middle and almost didn’t pick it back up。 Even though the plot inherently creates suspense (which was eventually enough to make me keep reading) I had little interest in picking it up again。 I found every single character almost insufferable。 I know this was by design and the characters are meant to be unlikeable。 I think Tartt may have succeeded a bit too much in writing them this way, as I simply didn’t care what happened to any of them。 。。。more

The Secret History is a captivating dark academia story that had me intrigued from the very beginning and kept me hooked through to the climax。 Donna Tartt’s writing is beautiful and she’s very good at planting seeds that foreshadow upcoming revelations。 It was satisfying when things were revealed and I thought variations of “OH, that’s why ______。 I KNEW that would come back up!” Richard Papen is a fascinating protagonist, who I definitely do not like as a person (I think he’s extremely naive, The Secret History is a captivating dark academia story that had me intrigued from the very beginning and kept me hooked through to the climax。 Donna Tartt’s writing is beautiful and she’s very good at planting seeds that foreshadow upcoming revelations。 It was satisfying when things were revealed and I thought variations of “OH, that’s why ______。 I KNEW that would come back up!” Richard Papen is a fascinating protagonist, who I definitely do not like as a person (I think he’s extremely naive, oddly idealistic, and VERY pathetic), but as a character he’s interesting。 I wish someone would’ve just beat his ass, like really give him a good beating。 Mostly because somehow he seems not realize how awful Bunny was and seems to be the only one who couldn’t tell that Bunny did not like him。 The group of friends we follow are all interesting characters and if you’re wondering who my favorite is, it’s Henry。 It was fascinating to see their different personalities and how they each behaved with each other。 Tartt did an excellent job at showing how the characters truly felt about each other through their actions, rather than telling us outright。 For example, before we knew anything about the circumstances of the murder, before it even happened, at the point in the story where Richard (naively) believes this is a close-knit group of friends who are all fond of each other, it was clear to me that they were not on friendly terms with Bunny, despite their efforts to portray that they were。 It was obvious they didn’t really like him, and actually, Richard did notice this about Henry but the twins told him otherwise。 My only question the entire time was, if they don’t want to be around him (and they absolutely didn’t), why tolerate him? It was satisfying when the reveals that came later confirmed everything I felt about the characters’ behaviors towards Bunny based on Tartt’s subtle hints。 The funny thing about this book is that it keeps going for over 200 more pages, long after the climax has passed。 In some ways, this is necessary and a good thing, while in other ways, it’s the contrary。 Of course it’s nice that we saw the repercussions of the murder and how it affected each other characters psychologically。 But I don’t think we needed quite so much of this because if I’m being honest, mostly nothing really happens after the climax。Which brings me to the aspect of Tartt’s writing style that I don’t like: the excessive descriptiveness。 There are paragraphs and paragraphs in this book going on and on and on about the weather, the sounds, the overall atmosphere, what buildings look like, what random characters look like and are wearing from head to toe, the different books that are on shelves, etc。 It’s actually RIDICULOUS。 At one point there’s an entire paragraph about a wasp’s buzzing and I’m not kidding。 There’s a lot of unnecessary portions in this book that can be skimmed without consequence。 Tartt’s knowledge of the Greeks and classic literature was also on full display。 Which, yes it makes sense in the context of the story, but it was a bit much。 It was A LOT。 I mean, we get it。 You know what you’re talking about, and thus, the characters do。I say all that to say, this book could’ve been edited better。 Most of the post-climax portion feels pointless。 Really, we didn’t need all that。 TLDR: The characters are fascinating, the story is enthralling。 If you like dark academia, you’ll definitely like this。 The writing is beautiful but EXCESSIVELY descriptive and makes things drag on much longer than they need to。 Could’ve easily been 5 stars if the unnecessary stuff was cut out。 。。。more
