Summary

A dark, twisted and compulsively readable psychological suspense novel about desire, revenge and coercive control。

Ten years ago, sixteen-year-old Gemma Toombs was kidnapped from Bangkok Airport by an infatuated drifter, Tyler MacFarlane, who took her to a secret den in the Australian desert。 Now her name is Kate Stone and it's her turn to confront Ty and try to find answers to the questions that have obsessed her since her ordeal。 What is the legacy of this coercive relationship? Who holds the cards now? In the confusion of past and present, will Kate remain trapped in a deranged dance of desire and revenge? Or will she regain control and find release?

Both a courtroom drama set in London and a road trip in the searing heat of the West Australian desert, Release is the story of two people confronting each other, each intent on destruction and survival。 A companion to Lucy Christopher's bestselling novel Stolen, this gripping psychological thriller explores a young woman's discovery of the complicated truth about a relationship that once seemed alluring。

For readers of Gillian Flynn, S。J。 Watson and Helen Fitzgerald。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Really disappointed in the lack of character development that Gemma (Kate) had。 She turned out to be like Tyler, if not worse。 I get that she had a hard time moving on from what happened to her 10 years ago, but you would think that would be enough time to move on and start your own life。 She really annoyed me in this sequel。 The book however in general was amazingly written, I just was expecting a different outcome。

I absolutely love Lucy Christopher’s writing。 I think she’s one of the best writer’s where you’re able to get inside the characters head and feelings。 I liked this story for the most part, however, the story moved really slow and it didn’t start picking up until towards a little after the middle of the book。If you can make it past it, then that’s when it starts getting good。 Stolen has been my all time favorite book since 2014 and I have waiting for the sequel for years。 I was actually pretty sa I absolutely love Lucy Christopher’s writing。 I think she’s one of the best writer’s where you’re able to get inside the characters head and feelings。 I liked this story for the most part, however, the story moved really slow and it didn’t start picking up until towards a little after the middle of the book。If you can make it past it, then that’s when it starts getting good。 Stolen has been my all time favorite book since 2014 and I have waiting for the sequel for years。 I was actually pretty satisfied with the ending。 This was a really beautiful story。 。。。more

Release doesn’t quite hit in the same way that Stolen does, but it’s still wonderfully written and I’m grateful that we got to see the ending to this story。 It was the ending it deserved。

3。6 ⭐Okay。。。 I have some THOUGHTS about this book。 As odd as this sounds, the author's writing has improved since stolen, this book was written well。 But I liked Stolen better。 Set 10 years after stolen, Ty is being released from prison。 Gemma is a very unreliable narrator through this whole book。 I'm usually not a massive fan of that perception, but it was done well。 It was a good way to show how truly emotionally broken Gemma still was 10 years on from her kidnapping。 Her mentality is really s 3。6 ⭐Okay。。。 I have some THOUGHTS about this book。 As odd as this sounds, the author's writing has improved since stolen, this book was written well。 But I liked Stolen better。 Set 10 years after stolen, Ty is being released from prison。 Gemma is a very unreliable narrator through this whole book。 I'm usually not a massive fan of that perception, but it was done well。 It was a good way to show how truly emotionally broken Gemma still was 10 years on from her kidnapping。 Her mentality is really shown through the men in this book, by how she can't see what is really going on, has never been able to adjust back into reality。 *MINOR SPOILERS BELOW*Nick。 I personally felt like he was meant to come off as abusive and/or narcissistic。 You can tell he was angry and being aggressive and even somewhat violent in his argument with Gemma regarding the letter, but she doesn't react normally to how someone would。 And the (for lack of a better term) kinky sex that he enjoyed。 If you were a genuine caring partner, and for some reason didn't think it was best to NOT have sex when someone is clearly inebriated。。。 you would generally question the motivation, or at least try and have a quick conversation about what Gemma was wanting out of the "pretend kidnapping experience"。 Not just run with whatever while she's drunk and not care about what emotional damage that could do to your partner。Ty。 Gemma is very confused at why he doesn't not respond to her the same way he always did。 He's not in love with her anymore and she can't understand why。 *Ahem* interesting that now she's an adult and not a MINOR that Ty did not get sexually aroused by Gemma at all when she was in the desert house with him。 Ty also starts admitting all the lies he told her when he kidnapped her to make her feel emotionally attached to him - the scar, his past, ect。 Everything he did to her was a compete manipulation, but she just can't understand that。 She's studied Stockholm syndrome and in therapy yet she just still didn't get it。 He did not want her anymore。*MAJOR SPOILERS BELOW*So eventually Ty "likes" Gemma somewhat again (because he couldn't possibly fake that, he never lies)。 They have sex next to a creek。 Gemma shoots a lizard for their dinner。 BUT。 We don't hear anymore from Ty after that。 Then the next morning he's "gone"。 And the gun is empty of all bullets, and Gemma hides it in an underwater cave in the creek。Gemma narrates that he has left to be free and not have to go back to prison。 I can't tell if I like the fact that the author left us with a question of what really happened, because I also feel like HATE that she did that。 Also the pregnancy what the heck!! Did that really need to be in there?? Ugh。 Overall, this book was interesting。 The last 100 pages were pretty intense。 I think I got what the author was trying to do with this book, but honestly I could be completely wrong。 It was a good read for me, even if Ty makes me feel nauseous。 。。。more

I am editing my review after having pondered this book further。 I changed it from 2 to 4 stars, because Lucy did what she does best: she left me thinking about this book。 And my review is nothing if because Lucy did what she does best: she left me thinking about this book。 And my review is nothing if not a perfect example of the message/lesson from Release which is that reality does not always meet our expectations。 I had expectations for this book, and it did not meet them, but what it did was provide some comfort in discomfort。 Both Stolen and Release have left an impression on me because they aren't like most books I read, in that they don't end with a perfectly wrapped bow on top of a happy ending。 And the truth is that it's realistic, just like life。 And Release did taint my perception of Stolen but I think it's for the best。 Gemma (or rather Kate) has spent 10 years imagining every possible scenario of what could happen if she ever saw Ty again。 She probably ran through every imaginable conversation, every reaction he might have。 She thought herself prepared to face him because she had thought of her speech, her questions, her answers for years。 But Ty did not live up to her expectations, he did not fit into any of her imagined scenarios。 So she panicked。 And she was angry, because she came back to find, well not the man she thought she was in love with and who she thought was in love with her。 And now that I see that it strikes me to my core because I have been Kate many times。 Planning and hoping for my perfect closure but then every time reality slaps my expectations out of me and every time, I scramble, which is what Kate did。 When I first read stolen as a young teen, I romanticized him, I knew it was wrong but I did。 The second time I read it, as a 23-year-old, I saw more of Ty's fatal flaws and I realized why romanticizing him was a terrible idea, but I hoped he could redeem himself。 But Release changed Ty forever in my eyes, perhaps in a good way。 It was realistic。 The system got him and stole from him everything that was wild, alluring, endearing even。 And stripped him down to his bones, a deeply disturbed and traumatized man。 But that does not destroy my sympathy for him, everything that happened to him was not his fault, he didn't know better。 Everyone deserves a chance at redemption, but he just failed to take his because again, he was never given the tools to cope properly。 Ultimately, Lucy did an amazing job of telling this story, and a part of me now wonders if Gemma really did kill Ty or maybe by setting him free into the wild, she killed the bad parts of him, or maybe the version of him she once loved。。。and maybe the baby is her way of turning that death of Ty, or Gemma, or them, into new life, a new start。 Original review:I want to start off by saying 2 things: Stolen was and always will be one of my favorite books。 It stuck with me for 10+ years。 Lucy Christopher’s writing was and is beautiful as always。 That being said (spoilers ahead) Release was extremely disappointing。 I honestly want to forget I read it so that it doesn’t ruin Stolen for me。 This was not the closure I was looking for, and I don’t think it was the closure Gemma was looking for or deserved either。 I knew Stolen wasn’t a love story, and I wasn’t expecting Release to be either。 When I first read Stolen I admired Gemma so much。 She was stronger than I would have ever been and still, she fell in love with Ty, part of me did too。 It really taught me something about myself and how we can look past the horrible things people have done and embrace the good。 I do it with people I have loved, I’m not saying it’s good but it brought it to my attention。 I don’t think Ty was a bad person, he just did bad things。 His moral compass was broken but he seemed redeemable like he could be saved like his heart was good but he just didn’t learn what was bad or good。 I thought maybe prison could save him。 I believe people can change and that people deserve second chances。 That being said, Ty’s change was heartbreaking。 I hoped at the very least he would have learned how he wronged Gemma and if he saw her, would say that but also leave her alone, knowing he was bad for her。 Part of me hopes that the reason he was so awful to her in release was on purpose。 To paint himself as cruel so that it would be easier for her to forget him and move on。 And Gemma…well the first half of the book pissed me off。 Because she wanted so much so not be controlled by Ty when she was 16 and now he’s in prison and she’s still letting him control her。 Her devolution was frankly, annoying。 And I thought maybe it was because she truly was in love with Ty and was in denial but if she did love him, why would she literally attempt to kill him? It was clear she was out for revenge and to fulfill some sexual fantasy in her mind。 But if that was it, if she really hated him like she expressed in the first half, why 1) let him keep affecting your life and 2) birth his child?!!? None of the events in this book made sense。 Ty and Gemma were both completely unhinged。 I get that Ty might resent Gemma for kissing him and then now coming back to kidnap /kill him。 or that he might loathe the desert because it was supposed to save them and it turned on them。 But there was no growth or healing or improvement from either of them。 And Ty’s once willingness to turn himself in to save Gemma’s life is just dead? I would understand if he devolved too, but then he acts like his old self so I don’t know what to believe。 Was he lying the first time? Or was he lying this time? Also Gemma is incredibly unstable to become a mother。 None of it makes sense。 In my opinion, what Gemma did to Ty seems far, far worse than what he did to her。 He never once tried to force himself onto her sexually, he never tried to kill her or harm her physically。 He just kidnapped her and well, now she did it to him。 And when Ty was finally free and had the opportunity to change his life, Gemma comes in and condemns him to a life of hiding In the wilderness。 With nothing to his name。 That is not saving him, and that is not closure for her。 This book left more unanswered questions than Stolen did。 This book needs a sequel more than stolen did。 I would have rather had a sequel from Ty’s point of view than this。 。。。more

SPOILERS BELOW:I, like many others, waited for this book for years。 I read Stolen when I was much younger, and it's a book that has stayed with me since。 I understand why some people were disappointed with the way this book turned out, and the way the characters changed。 Initially I was a little disappointed too, until I started to realize, that's life。 People change。 The rose-colored glasses we'd all been wearing when we envisioned Ty were taken off, and we saw him for how he was。 Imperfect。 Ol SPOILERS BELOW:I, like many others, waited for this book for years。 I read Stolen when I was much younger, and it's a book that has stayed with me since。 I understand why some people were disappointed with the way this book turned out, and the way the characters changed。 Initially I was a little disappointed too, until I started to realize, that's life。 People change。 The rose-colored glasses we'd all been wearing when we envisioned Ty were taken off, and we saw him for how he was。 Imperfect。 Older。 Worn-down。 A liar。 A manipulator。 Controlling。 All of the positive attributes I once attributed to this character were replaced with a new image, and while that's sad, yes, and disappointing, I actually loved it。 We were able to see and feel the narrator's point of view, and see Ty as she was seeing him after all this time。 Her rose-colored glasses and the distorted image she had of this man were also removed, and we got a glimpse into her world。 After the first book, I think we all developed a sort of Stockholm Syndrome。 Ty was described as this amazing, attractive, intelligent young man, who showed a young girl a beautiful land and an alternative way of life; and we were able to escape into this fairytale with Gemma。 But I think it's important to remember the ugly side of things as well, and to unsheathe the truth - that maybe we create images of people that aren't realistic。 Maybe Ty was an amazing character, full of personality and life。 Maybe he was a kidnapper who had a dark side and had the capacity to do very evil things。 Both can be true at once。 It can be very hard to let an important person go, and to realize that maybe the image we hold of them is a fantasy。 This book compared to the first felt like a bad break-up to me, one that left my heart heavy and longing, but in a hopeful way。 I also really loved how the narrator may not have been reliable。 Maybe Ty didn't survive, maybe Gemma did kill him with his gun that day in the water, and maybe she did hide his body in the underwater cave。 But she holds onto the hope that he is out there, free, and that gives her the "release" she has been craving for ten years。 Did we get a happy ending with this book? Yes and no。 But we did get more Gemma and Ty, and while this does alter my perception of the first book slightly, it also reignited my love for both Stolen and Release。 I highly recommend both books。 。。。more

Lucy Christopher is a genius author in the ways she is able to write conflict in a person's head and the way she can get the reader to experience Stockholm syndrome themself。 Through this book, I can wholeheartedly say I was in love with Ty just as I was with the first book, and that's the power of Lucy Christopher as an author。 Making you feel love and empathy for a man who committed a heinous crime。 This book is so beautifully written in the 'love' (if you call it that) shared between these tw Lucy Christopher is a genius author in the ways she is able to write conflict in a person's head and the way she can get the reader to experience Stockholm syndrome themself。 Through this book, I can wholeheartedly say I was in love with Ty just as I was with the first book, and that's the power of Lucy Christopher as an author。 Making you feel love and empathy for a man who committed a heinous crime。 This book is so beautifully written in the 'love' (if you call it that) shared between these two vulnerable souls with tragic pasts。 I finished this book in 5 days which is the quickest I have ever read a book。 Each time I sat down to read this book, I read 100 pages at a time at least。 The plot twists thrown at the reader and shocking words written in the book have you just needing to read another chapter each time you think "That's enough for today"。 I will never ever forget 'Stolen' and 'Release' as these two books make up a part of the list of my favourite books, Stolen being number one on that list。 I am never going to find another book as brilliantly written as 'Stolen' or 'Release' but I can forever treasure the power of Lucy Christopher's writing and keep it with me forever on my shelves。 。。。more
