The Ripper case reaches its conclusion with， ironically， a higher body count than the real life version。 In the aftermath， there’s corruption at the Yard， which puts Bonde and Sherlock on a collision course。 And， of all the questions this story could ask， ‘how do you like them apples’ isn’t one that was even on my radar。I don’t know of a manga series currently publishing that I run as hot and cold on as this one， where any given volume might be really good or really mediocre or somewhere in betw The Ripper case reaches its conclusion with， ironically， a higher body count than the real life version。 In the aftermath， there’s corruption at the Yard， which puts Bonde and Sherlock on a collision course。 And， of all the questions this story could ask， ‘how do you like them apples’ isn’t one that was even on my radar。I don’t know of a manga series currently publishing that I run as hot and cold on as this one， where any given volume might be really good or really mediocre or somewhere in between or above or below。On the plus side， I do think that the version of James Bonde we get in this story is a hoot， doubly so since he’s still a womanizer despite formerly being a female （well， he didn’t precisely transition， it’s complicated， though the story doesn’t care so you shouldn’t either）。 I’m here for that Bonde and Moniepenny relationship。If anything lands exactly right in this one， it’s watching Bonde harass poor Que， which is basically straight out of any Bond movie ever made and almost as funny。 At the rate Que keeps developing anachronisms， however， Bonde will have a jet pack by series end。This version of Sherlock has similarly turned out to be a lot of fun and it’s interesting to see the Great Detective forced into using his skills in ways he’d rather not。 I especially liked his own observation that a detective， by default， starts on the back foot， so pulling ahead of Moriarty is nigh impossible。The Ripper case winds down with the usual burst of violence that lets the series re-emphasize that the methods our boys are using might be brutal， but they have a standard they adhere to when it comes to protecting the lower classes。 I will say， I’m pretty sure they get the body count wrong for the historic Ripper， which was kind of surprising。It’s a good denouement， if unspectacular， which is this volume in a nutshell。 The next story is about corruption and brings Bonde and Sherlock both into the picture and， minus that rather amusing mash-up， isn’t especially interesting。The MacGuffin in this one feels like it gets conjured into existence by the character’s discussing what would simply have to be the case， which I kind of dispute， rather than anything especially logical or factual。 It just feels weird narratively。And with the action taking place in a locked down Scotland Yard， you’d think Bonde would be a lot more interesting than his boring plan to get inside， which doesn’t make a lick of sense given how tight we’re told the security is。 It’s not the most well plotted caper。Anyhoo， the last chapter is a quiet conversation between Sherlock and Moriarty Prime， which would be an excellent bit of calm if the series did not decide that this was the exact moment it needed to jump the shark。Oh， there’s a mathematics exam that Sherlock sits in on and one of the questions is impossible。 But not for one student， except it’s not a student， no， it couldn’t be the lowly Bill Hunting， could it？I think my jaw dislocated and I had to retrieve my eyes from across the room at that one。 The Bond and Sherlock cross mingling was one thing， but why in the fourteen flavours of hell would you feel the need to bother bringing Good Will Hunting into this？There seems to be absolutely no reason for this addition and it’s not like that movie is some cultural touchstone that needed to be integrated here。 If you don’t recognize the reference it’s innocuous， if entirely predictable （a mystery with one suspect is not much of a mystery）， but if you do， it’s utterly jarring。Maybe next time the actual Fonzie will just show up， or Que will invent the One Ring， just for the hell of it。 Or they could reinforce Moran’s skeleton with adamantium！ Que， are you telling me you built a time machine out of an auto-carriage！？ I mean， it just writes itself at that point。Obviously it doesn’t wreck the whole thing， but now and then you get a plot device that just rubs you the wrong way and， given how little it has to do with anything， that one just threw off my entire appraisal of the volume。 And minus that annoyance， the back and forth between the two leads is very choice。 It’s a real fly in the soup moment if there ever was one。3 stars - sometimes we get Professor Moriarty， sometimes we get Professor Mediocrity， and this time around we’re leaning far more towards the latter。 Fun at times， irritating at others， definitely a lesser instalment for me。 。。。more

I wish I cared at all about the main Jack the Ripper plot in this。 I wish any character in that storyline was compelling in any way。 This series does so much that's progressive， by having a canon （view spoiler）[trans male character， who's in a romantic relationship with a woman （hide spoiler）]， while simultaneously being one of the most boring series I've read in some time。I did somewhat enjoy the （view spoiler）["Good Will Hunting" （hide spoiler）] rip-off where （view spoiler）[Sherlock and Willia I wish I cared at all about the main Jack the Ripper plot in this。 I wish any character in that storyline was compelling in any way。 This series does so much that's progressive， by having a canon （view spoiler）[trans male character， who's in a romantic relationship with a woman （hide spoiler）]， while simultaneously being one of the most boring series I've read in some time。I did somewhat enjoy the （view spoiler）["Good Will Hunting" （hide spoiler）] rip-off where （view spoiler）[Sherlock and William go on a lunch date， mostly because Sherlock and William were cute （hide spoiler）]， but without that cuteness， it was literally almost a beat-for-beat rip-off of a better film， minus some of the more important plots in that film， so it's like。。。 not even good fanfiction of the film。 Even an earlier scene in the story feels like "Bungo Stray Dogs" fanfiction， where （view spoiler）[Patterson and Bond （hide spoiler）] are meeting in a bar to talk information， which is eerily reminiscent of Dazai and Ango meeting in a bar to do the same thing， even down to what the bar looks like， how they're sitting， much of how the characters look， and the drinks they're having。 The problem is， even though "Moriarty the Patriot" is actually canonically （view spoiler）[queerer （hide spoiler）] than "Bungo Stray Dogs"， "Bungo Stray Dogs" has a far better story and more compelling characters。Overall this series is slow， boring， and mostly just an "Oh I got that reference" reel， with nothing to really add of its own， other than some homo-erotic subtext between the different male characters。 It only has a three star rating for me because of that one-chapter story that's a film rip-off， because otherwise I would have ranked it one or two stars for that terrible Jack the Ripper story。 。。。more

TW: Graphic violence， murder， bombing， strong language， sexual harassment Spoilers ahead！ I didn't expect to enjoy this volume at first。 However， this has one of the best ending chapters。William and Louis found Jack The Ripper's stakeout and here， they shall receive their punishment for the killings of the women in Volume 7。 This is actually the first time that we get to see William and Louis working just the two of them （it's such a great brotherly bonding moment despite them committing murder TW: Graphic violence， murder， bombing， strong language， sexual harassment Spoilers ahead！ I didn't expect to enjoy this volume at first。 However， this has one of the best ending chapters。William and Louis found Jack The Ripper's stakeout and here， they shall receive their punishment for the killings of the women in Volume 7。 This is actually the first time that we get to see William and Louis working just the two of them （it's such a great brotherly bonding moment despite them committing murder together）。 They take down the men responsible for causing the havoc in Whitechapel。 As usual， the Lord of crimes never leaves any evidence behind but he likes teasing Sherlock Holmes with bread crumb trails and clues。As both of them were leaving the murder scene， a mysterious figure was introduced。 Other than Mycroft Holmes， this is the first time someone alive knows about William's identity as The Lord of crimes and so the games begin。。。Sherlock has been quite depressed ever since he said goodbye to Irene Adler。 John， bless his heart is always trying his best to cheer him up。 Sherlock knew that The Lord of Crimes was behind the death of the militia。 He ponders upon his motive。 Why did he leave the bodies behind and why did The Lord of Crimes prevent the clash between the police and the Whitechapel folks/militia？？Could it be that the Lord of Crimes is trying to send him a message？ /wink/ *YEP*That was the end of the Whitechapel arc。The Riot in New Scotland Yard is an interesting one！！！ I really enjoyed it because there are finally more Herder and Bond content！！！ BOND LOOKS SO COOL！！！ The fact that he can just blend in anywhere amazes me。 And also， that Arterton guy finally gets what he deserves。 Lestrade trying to find the book of evidence was hilarious。 He is such an underrated character; a trusting one too。 The police caught an innocent man for The Jack the Ripper case。 The fault accusation caused former Chief Inspector Arterton to be relieved of his position。 It's also because the evidence of foul play got out。 Apparently， he was responsible for many false accusations and charges。Sherlock ponders again about the identity of The Lord of Crimes and has deduced that the person comes from a noble background。 *HE'S NOT WRONG* *that Moneypenny x bond scene was cute af* okaaaayyy finally let's talk about that short ending chapter。 UGH， ITS PURE SHERLIAM and such a satisfying end to a dramatic arc。 I LOVE THE ADVENTURE OF THE ONE STUDENT ARC WHOLEHEARTEDLY。 I'm still bitter that they decided not to animate this part。Sherlock travelled to Durham just to see Liam （ok， at this point， he was quite suspicious of him）。 He saw him give a lecture and even answered his exam paper！ It's crazy to me how William was able to remain calm while they were discussing THE LORD OF CRIMES？？？ I would be sweating profusely！Anyway， I love how Sherlock and William both reassured the 'student' at the end。 It just warms my heart。 William sending off Sherlock at the train station is so cute too！！！ When William said that he wants him to be alive when The Lord of Crimes is arrested was quite。。。。disturbing。 This just further shows that he is going to include Sherlock in this elaborated plan of his。 It's foreshadowing， somewhat。 。。。more
