Summary

For years, rumors of the “Marsh Girl” haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet fishing village。 Kya Clark is barefoot and wild; unfit for polite society。 So in late 1969, when the popular Chase Andrews is found dead, locals immediately suspect her。

But Kya is not what they say。 A born naturalist with just one day of school, she takes life's lessons from the land, learning the real ways of the world from the dishonest signals of fireflies。 But while she has the skills to live in solitude forever, the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved。 Drawn to two young men from town, who are each intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new and startling world–until the unthinkable happens。

In Where the Crawdads Sing, Owens juxtaposes an exquisite ode to the natural world against a profound coming of age story and haunting mystery。 Thought-provoking, wise, and deeply moving, Owens’s debut novel reminds us that we are forever shaped by the child within us, while also subject to the beautiful and violent secrets that nature keeps。

The story asks how isolation influences the behavior of a young woman, who like all of us, has the genetic propensity to belong to a group。 The clues to the mystery are brushed into the lush habitat and natural histories of its wild creatures。

Amazing。 Deep and heartfelt, very touching。

Amazing book。 Story of love, murder, resilience and nature。 Beautifully written。 I loved the description of the the birds and the scenery as much as the plot。 The ending was gripping and breathtaking。 Loved it。 By far my favourite book this year。

If you can survive tons of nature description word vomit, you eventually get to a damn compelling coming of age story。 I also didn’t care much for the murder mystery aspect which is the main focus in the final act。 So the ending wasn’t great for me。 But I’d say Kya the character is so good that it made it all worth it。I think the author tried too hard to write a new American classic, overreaching with the poetic prose and genre mashing, but she does get a lot right for a good chunk of the book。 If you can survive tons of nature description word vomit, you eventually get to a damn compelling coming of age story。 I also didn’t care much for the murder mystery aspect which is the main focus in the final act。 So the ending wasn’t great for me。 But I’d say Kya the character is so good that it made it all worth it。I think the author tried too hard to write a new American classic, overreaching with the poetic prose and genre mashing, but she does get a lot right for a good chunk of the book。 After about halfway through, I just couldn’t put it down。 3。5/5, but I’ll round it up to a 4。 I’m hopeful for her next novel。 。。。more

This feels less like a review and more of a comment, but I finished the book feeling like I had to rate it high because of all the hype surrounding it, but after finishing the book, I put it down kind of disappointed。 Maybe the hype surrounding it built me up and then left me deflated after reading it or maybe it wasn’t that amazing to begin with。 I’m not sure… the book was pretty subpar to me and some situations I found unrealistic。

Amazing I read this book in 3 sittings。 I've never read a book that fast。 This book just brought me into the places that she was。 I can understand the feelings of judgement。 Kya lived for herself as everyone should。 Amazing I read this book in 3 sittings。 I've never read a book that fast。 This book just brought me into the places that she was。 I can understand the feelings of judgement。 Kya lived for herself as everyone should。 。。。more

3。5/5 rounded up took awhile for me to get into but then it was really good

An absolute page-turner。 From a third of the way until the end, I barely stopped for any breaks! Equal parts coming-of-age, historical fiction, mystery, and courtroom drama。 "Where the Crawdads Sing" is a somber, gorgeously-written tale of loneliness, belonging, and survival told through the eyes of our intelligent and complex heroine。 An absolute page-turner。 From a third of the way until the end, I barely stopped for any breaks! Maybe it’s just me, but I never like the endings to books… they’re always anticlimactic to me… super well written though and gave me a new perspective on how you can live in this world - 4 stars AlsoDo NOT see the movie

Where The Crawdads Sing is one of the best books I’ve ever read and I can see it being a required reading requirement in the future。 Truly one of the most heartbreaking and inspiring books I’ve ever read and will ever read。 🫶🏻

3。75☆A good and easy read, but filled with a lot of descriptions。 A heart-warming and heart-breaking story of love, loss, and life。Not hating on this use of a simile, but just as the marsh goes on forever on a hot sunny day, so do the author's words describing the marsh, the sea, Kya's shack, the forest, etc。, which is quite a lot of the book。It could also be seen as slowing the story down by using the multi-worded descriptions, as another simile as to the hot sticky summer days that seem to 3。75☆A good and easy read, but filled with a lot of descriptions。 A heart-warming and heart-breaking story of love, loss, and life。Not hating on this use of a simile, but just as the marsh goes on forever on a hot sunny day, so do the author's words describing the marsh, the sea, Kya's shack, the forest, etc。, which is quite a lot of the book。It could also be seen as slowing the story down by using the multi-worded descriptions, as another simile as to the hot sticky summer days that seem to go slow and drag on。I did enjoy the book as a whole and would recommend it as an easy read, a summer read, to get out of a reading rut, or just enjoy a casual read。 。。。more

Being able to cook and drive a boat all alone at six years old? A couple knowing a child is living in the marsh by herself and not making sure someone is there to care for her? A truancy officer who clearly doesn’t really care if Kya goes to school or not? Having 1 day of formal education, Publishing I would say 3。5 stars。 While I enjoyed the book, there were just things that felt a little too unrealistic to me。 Four siblings and a mother all leave a six year old alone with an abusive alcoholic? Having 1 day of formal education, Publishing at least 7 award winning books and offered an honorary doctoral degree from a prestigious university? These just felt a little far fetched to me, but I can let some of them pass as it’s a good story。 What felt jolting to me was the twist on the last two or three pages。 Kya goes from not being able to look anyone in the eye and bolting from everyone to a master manipulative murder。 She was hiding from him one scene, then committing cold blooded murder the next。 Then she’s able to hide her tracks perfectly and make sure that nobody saw her。 TLDR: Overall enjoyed the book, but some things were just too hard to believe。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I loved the story and the ending was such an unexpected twist。 I felt like I could picture the entire marsh。 And every scene for that matter。 I cried in several parts of the book, especially when Jumpin’ put her book in the window of his store。 The end made me cry to finally see her get the life she deserved。

This was exquisite from start to finish。 An outstanding and unique story that makes the marsh feel so human and complex that it envelopes you。 The story broke my heart and put it back together all at once。 The character development is so beautiful and real, I felt like I was really there。 The resilience was breathtaking along with the progression of relationships and communication。 I Couldn't put it down,I can't say enough good things。 This was exquisite from start to finish。 An outstanding and unique story that makes the marsh feel so human and complex that it envelopes you。 The story broke my heart and put it back together all at once。 The character development is so beautiful and real, I felt like I was really there。 The resilience was breathtaking along with the progression of relationships and communication。 I Couldn't put it down,I can't say enough good things。 。。。more

Amazing book。 Hard to put it down

🫶🏽 just for fun

This has such a SLLLLLOOOOWWWW ass start omg I literally hard to force myself to keep reading (like how you used to force yourself to read those assigned books in schools … )😭 It picks up around pg 150-170ish。 But you spend those first hundred and something pages reading crazy detailed descriptions about the fucken marsh … like girl I get it, let’s move on。 After the book picked up it was interesting and it didn’t end the way I thought it was going to, which is why I gave it a 3/5

This is now one of my all time FAVORITE books & I can’t wait to read more from the author。 I also can’t wait to watch the movie。 I could NOT put this book down。 This book was so incredibly beautiful, haunting, harrowing, lovely, romantic & just overall brilliantly written。

This was a great book with ideas that I’ve never read before。 The mystery and the details spun into every chapter make for a hook and a story you never want to stop reading。 After reading the book, I felt a big connection with how the author explains why she wrote the book。 “That, yes, we may long to be in a group, but we can find unbelievable strength deep inside to survive, even thrive, when we are alone,” Owens said。 “And when we are while, we are more likely to find a group again。”Beautifull This was a great book with ideas that I’ve never read before。 The mystery and the details spun into every chapter make for a hook and a story you never want to stop reading。 After reading the book, I felt a big connection with how the author explains why she wrote the book。 “That, yes, we may long to be in a group, but we can find unbelievable strength deep inside to survive, even thrive, when we are alone,” Owens said。 “And when we are while, we are more likely to find a group again。”Beautifully written story。 。。。more
