This is a classic Chinese work of military warfare, and I mainly read it because it's part of the Penguin Great Ideas collection which I own a few of。 I'm also trying to get some of the really short books I own off my TBR, so reading this really helped with that! I don't have too much to say as it was pretty much what I was expecting and I got through it very quickly。 This is a classic Chinese work of military warfare, and I mainly read it because it's part of the Penguin Great Ideas collection which I own a few of。 I'm also trying to get some of the really short books I own off my TBR, so reading this really helped with that! This book was a bit random and a bit out of my comfort zone but I really liked it honestly the whole book is so beautiful。 Last 5 pages were a bit tedious to get through but apart from that I really liked it。 The art work in this book was absolutely stunning。

This was one of my late brother’s favorite books。 Reading in his memory, I’m happy to take away some key ideas。 First of all, not every fight needs to end in a battle。 Instead, it’s much wiser to avoid war altogether by getting information on your competition, thinking outside of the box, and creating your own playing field。 Most victories arise from meticulous preparation。 If you’re well-prepared, you can strike fast when the opportunity presents itself – remember, speed is of the essence。 In t This was one of my late brother’s favorite books。 Reading in his memory, I’m happy to take away some key ideas。 First of all, not every fight needs to end in a battle。 Instead, it’s much wiser to avoid war altogether by getting information on your competition, thinking outside of the box, and creating your own playing field。 Most victories arise from meticulous preparation。 If you’re well-prepared, you can strike fast when the opportunity presents itself – remember, speed is of the essence。 In terms of being a good leader, make sure you’re kind yet strict。 Rely on your experience, and be disciplined。 When you lead by example, you’ll be sure to gain the loyalty of your team。 。。。more

A small and exceptional book。 By far an easy read given the amount of footnotes Jonathan Clements leaves explaining certain passages。I particularly enjoyed the last chapter by Jonathan himself about Master Sun and if he really exists。 I do hope that one day some archeologist finds a more complete text of this book with the author。 Till then this book is a must read。

Reading the 'Art of War' at night and visiting the Bangabandhu Military Museum next day, was exciting。 War is never justified。 But as I lived most of my life near the cantonment areas, even I grew up with soldiers。。。 so I always had some interests in military tactics。 There are some mottos in Bangladesh Army like, 'পরিকল্পনা অর্ধেক যুদ্ধজয়ের সমান' or 'কঠিন প্রশিক্ষণ, সহজ যুদ্ধ'。 They wrote these on the walls of the training grounds。 I memorized and portrayed these in my practical life。 These li Reading the 'Art of War' at night and visiting the Bangabandhu Military Museum next day, was exciting。 War is never justified。 But as I lived most of my life near the cantonment areas, even I grew up with soldiers。。。 so I always had some interests in military tactics。 There are some mottos in Bangladesh Army like, 'পরিকল্পনা অর্ধেক যুদ্ধজয়ের সমান' or 'কঠিন প্রশিক্ষণ, সহজ যুদ্ধ'。 They wrote these on the walls of the training grounds。 I memorized and portrayed these in my practical life。 These lines, these disciplinary acts, and these strategies can create a great impact on human nature。 The art of war is an enduring classic that holds a special place in the culture and history of East Asia。 It is a treatise on military tactics and warfare that has been employed by the likes of Napoleon, Mao, Castro, Stalin, and many more to plan their strategies in countless battles and conflicts。I took some notes on the aspects and strategies from it。 As Sun Tzu wrote this for the generals of the armies, anyone can easily convert the facts and see through the described visible war strategies and consider it as a self-help book。 It may bore you a bit, but it's a good thought-provoking book I would say。 。。。more

I'll be honest, I finished this book a few years ago but was putting off logging it until I finished the commentary section of it to make sure I wasn't missing some big revelation。 The entire book is about war, and much of it's praise comes from people claiming that the books advice can be moulded to fit many other parts of life, such as sport or business。 I'll be honest, I don't see it。 Most of what is written is just pure common sense。 “The greatest victory is that which requires no battle。” Y I'll be honest, I finished this book a few years ago but was putting off logging it until I finished the commentary section of it to make sure I wasn't missing some big revelation。 The entire book is about war, and much of it's praise comes from people claiming that the books advice can be moulded to fit many other parts of life, such as sport or business。 I'll be honest, I don't see it。 Most of what is written is just pure common sense。 “The greatest victory is that which requires no battle。” Yeah of course。 “The wise warrior avoids the battle。” Duh。 “Ponder and deliberate before you make a move。” Why didn't I think of that。 I can absolutely see why some people would find this interesting, as a relic of the past, but I can't see how anyone could take anything productive out of this book in a meaningful way。 。。。more

Read this book a while ago, stored it in a box in my closet and just recently found it。 I love Sun Tzu's way of thinking。 Strategy at its basic and efficient form。 I'll re read this again before the end of the year。 Read this book a while ago, stored it in a box in my closet and just recently found it。 I love Sun Tzu's way of thinking。 Strategy at its basic and efficient form。 I'll re read this again before the end of the year。 。。。more

I suppose there’s a reason on why this book can be applied to no matter what field you’re in。

What is the demographic of people that enjoy this book besides maybe Chinese historians?

Gustav Messany-Oberwandling

It has a few gems, but if I want ancient Chinese wisdom I still prefer the Tao Te Ching。

Deejoy99

Really liked it, almost a five。 At first the sort-of repetitive notes and conclusions were tiring, but as I read the book as a whole I realised that it was necessary to capture the essence of what the authors were trying to say, and to remember the most important points the book provides。

An interesting pamphlet on military strategy。 I'll read most things that advise that it's wiser to avoid war than to go testosterone-laden head-first into conflict if it can be avoided。 Truthfully, I only read it because of my interest in The Poppy War series which references a version of this text frequently。 It takes like an hour to listen to and Aiden Gillen is a great narrator。 Little Finger could have learned a thing or two from this book。 An interesting pamphlet on military strategy。 I'll read most things that advise that it's wiser to avoid war than to go testosterone-laden head-first into conflict if it can be avoided。 Truthfully, I only read it because of my interest in The Poppy War series which references a version of this text frequently。 It takes like an hour to listen to and Aiden Gillen is a great narrator。 Little Finger could have learned a thing or two from this book。 。。。more

Understood almost Nothing。 Any prior read required? Maybe, war is not for me, luckily me!Won’t rate, maybe I’ll come back when I have grey hair to appreciate this, or maybe, this book couldn’t stand the test of time。

The book is important to preserve history。 Some of the lessons inside might indeed be used for modern war as well。 However, it is commonly said that this book is a must read for business success。 I would disagree。 Even though a few tips can be mapped here and there to both business or life in general but mostly they are specifically targeted at the commanders of a nation at war。
