I really like it, it’s real interesting to get more information about reality in Korea and how hard to be the woman there。 I didn’t know a lot and this book makes me rethink how can be exhausted fighting for gender equality, but it worth it on 100%! I hope that one day the world wouldn’t have problems like Kim and women won’t be bothered by making sacrifices for their family, husbands, work, society and etc, just because they was born with “woman” genitals!Have a nice reading🌈

This book tells a story of a Korean woman with her disadvantages in our society。 There’s wasn’t really a big story behind it, just the story of her life。 But that is more than enough。 I’m sure everyone already knows of the gender gaps in every aspect, but after reading this book it’s somehow much more present than it was before。 This story is written very well and also educates。 A short but very good read。

A short read full of so much information。 Truly a great beginner feminist read。 It made me incredibly mad and sad both at what's happening to the women in the book (and real life) and catching myself think "well, that happens"。 A short read full of so much information。 Truly a great beginner feminist read。 It made me incredibly mad and sad both at what's happening to the women in the book (and real life) and catching myself think "well, that happens"。 。。。more

That was heart wrenching and thought provoking。 Loved how amazingly this book unfolds the patriarchal mindset of society。

A fantastically bitter (rightfully so), very short, yet deep, and powerful read。 The way it reads is something else。 The phases are: 1) wut’s going on? 2) facts facts facts 3) ok I get i- WOW!The main message you must take from this book is one of my favorite and most repeated phrases: men are scum。 Bye!

I will only say 1 thing: finished it all in 1 day! Sublime。

I'm usually not a fan of dry writing but this book is all the more powerful for the way it's written。 It made me scream with anger and want to throw the book into a wall but somehow also empty and numb, since probably every woman can relate。Will definitely recommend to everyone I know, especially men。 I'm usually not a fan of dry writing but this book is all the more powerful for the way it's written。 It made me scream with anger and want to throw the book into a wall but somehow also empty and numb, since probably every woman can relate。Will definitely recommend to everyone I know, especially men。 。。。more

The world had changed a great deal, but the little rules, contracts, and customs had not, which meant the world hadn't actually changed at all。 This book had me raging with anger。 I hate injustice and inequality, and this book is filled with it。 It really shows, how even nowadays, having a dick gives people an unjustified amount of power。 This book takes place in South Korea, but this is also true for alot of other countries。 Even in my country, the Netherlands, there is still a great amount The world had changed a great deal, but the little rules, contracts, and customs had not, which meant the world hadn't actually changed at all。 This book had me raging with anger。 I hate injustice and inequality, and this book is filled with it。 It really shows, how even nowadays, having a dick gives people an unjustified amount of power。 This book takes place in South Korea, but this is also true for alot of other countries。 Even in my country, the Netherlands, there is still a great amount of inequality between men and women。 It may not be as prominent as in South Korea, but it's still there。 And it makes me hella angry。 Anyways, the book itself was good。 The writing could have been a little better, but other than that it makes its point crystal clear。 This is one of those books I think everyone should read, as it exposes the raw truth of our not so perfect modern world。 。。。more

What an eye opener。Took me a while to get into the book but I was able to finish it in 3 days of straight reading。Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982 isn’t your run in the mill story。 It’s told documentary style and not from the perspective of the main character。 While it’s no question that women’s rights have a long way to go, it doesn’t make me any less mad reading what Jiyoung had to go through。A lot of them felt very real…probably bc a lot of her experiences have happened to me as well。Of the entire book What an eye opener。Took me a while to get into the book but I was able to finish it in 3 days of straight reading。Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982 isn’t your run in the mill story。 It’s told documentary style and not from the perspective of the main character。 While it’s no question that women’s rights have a long way to go, it doesn’t make me any less mad reading what Jiyoung had to go through。A lot of them felt very real…probably bc a lot of her experiences have happened to me as well。Of the entire book, probably the last chapter was the most devastating。 4。5 stars 。。。more

Short book, but thought-provoking。 One interesting detail was how, with the exception of the husband, all the male characters weren't assigned names - they were referred to as "X's husband", or "Y's manager"。 Short book, but thought-provoking。 One interesting detail was how, with the exception of the husband, all the male characters weren't assigned names - they were referred to as "X's husband", or "Y's manager"。 。。。more

Just finished this and wow。 Please consider adding it to your tbr。 Very accurate insights on gender inequalities and the ending left me feeling so disturbed and angry。 Also felt so connected to this story as a korean American, and my mom was born and raised in Seoul, Korea and I can only imagine how much she could have related to this story。 5 ⭐️s, this is a masterpiece。

Viewing Kim Jiyoung through the narrative of a male psychologist unknowingly (until the last chapter) illustrates how women’s lives are framed through the lens of patriarchy。 Unfortunately, try as you might ladies, this is a man’s world and we’re just living (aka barely surviving)in it。 I fear this review doesn’t really do this book justice! So instead I’ll refer to the reviews which convey how I feel in far fewer words…“Enthralling and enraging” “To read the book is to imagine being a restive, aggrieved, millennial and to trace her path through everyday misogyny” 。。。more

This book made me both sad and angry。

I appreciated the chance to learn more about South Korean society and its stigmas against women。 However, that's basically all this book has to offer。 It doesn't feel like a fictional book, more like a bachelor thesis。 I appreciated the chance to learn more about South Korean society and its stigmas against women。 However, that's basically all this book has to offer。 It doesn't feel like a fictional book, more like a bachelor thesis。 。。。more

For such a short book, this one achieves an astounding amount of social critique/reflection on the lives of women and the ways in which the female experience of the world is available to be considered and understood by the male sphere, only for it to be dismissed。I listened to this, and for most of the book I was very confused by a book so inherently about the female was narrated by a man。 This really does pay off at the end in that the reader is shown the ways in which a man can have all the in For such a short book, this one achieves an astounding amount of social critique/reflection on the lives of women and the ways in which the female experience of the world is available to be considered and understood by the male sphere, only for it to be dismissed。I listened to this, and for most of the book I was very confused by a book so inherently about the female was narrated by a man。 This really does pay off at the end in that the reader is shown the ways in which a man can have all the information about how incredibly hard many aspects of the world can be for women。。。。only to move on in the blink of an eye because male priviledge protects them from it。This book is set in Korea, and though much of the book does sit as a reflection of female lives globally, there is also specific reflection on Korean culture and the endless expectations set for female children, for wives and for mothers。 It's a level of expectation that as a reader you can see so clearly is unattainable。I wanted to hug Kim Jiyoung, give her a break from life。That said, the book finishes at an odd point in her story。 We don't see the way in which she starts to crack under this pressure and slowly unravel plays out and I would really have liked to。 I hope there's another of these books in time to show the other half of her life。 。。。more
