First time I experienced this story was via audible。 It was shocking, disturbing and magnificent all the same。 I enjoyed every moment。 This is what originally peaked my interest into reading the comics。 The comics was a wonderful experience, however, I did enjoy the audiobook more。 To my surprise, it was more shocking, more traumatic, with more gore and I loved it。 I am surprised that I the audio experience was more harrowing that the visual one。 With that said, I still think you should read San First time I experienced this story was via audible。 It was shocking, disturbing and magnificent all the same。 I enjoyed every moment。 This is what originally peaked my interest into reading the comics。 The comics was a wonderful experience, however, I did enjoy the audiobook more。 To my surprise, it was more shocking, more traumatic, with more gore and I loved it。 I am surprised that I the audio experience was more harrowing that the visual one。 With that said, I still think you should read Sandman via audio or through the comic or both。 Because each medium brings forth a different sort of entertainment。 The only reason why I am deducting 1 star is because I was confused to no end and this is technically a reread。 Additionally, there was this extra story at the end and I was unable to follow at all what was going on。 The story I am referring to is Sandman Midnight Theatre, for fans out there help a novice fan out and explain to me how this fits in。For newbs like myself, allow me to help you out with super minor spoilers of the plot, this is just guide to help you follow what is going on。 The deluxe edition book 1 consists of 2 main storylines, throughout these two main stories, standalone stories are sprinkled within and they are probably some of my favourite parts of that comic。 According to my research deluxe edition book 1 covers the following volumes。Preludes and Nocturnes which includes The Sandman issues #1–8, the main plot features the capture and eventual escape of Morpheus, god of Dreams and his pursue of his 3 magical artifacts。 Additional stories not following the main plot line but eventually links with it includes The Sound of her wings and Tales in the Sand, both of which I thoroughly enjoyed。The Doll's House which includes The Sandman issues #9–16, this volume focuses on Desire's manipulation of dream by creating a Dream Vortex, it follows the story of Rose and she tries to find her brother。 Moreover, it address the chaos within the Dream realm as a result of Dream's capture。 These three plot lines beautifully intertwine。 Similar to volume 1, this included one additional story titled Men of Good Fortune (I loved that one and the themes it tackles) Additionally, at the end there is Sandman Midnight Theatre which has a totally different feel and artistic style than all the rest, and this was my least favourite and most confusing of all the issues。The most beautiful thing about reading these comics is the you will discover something new every time。 These comics have solidified my belief in Gaiman as being a stellar storyteller。 。。。more

I think this would have been more my kind of thing a couple of decades ago。 It definitely has moments of greatness, and some really captivating characters。 Sometimes it's too creepy, sometimes it's too meandering。 I think I will keep reading the series for now。 I think this would have been more my kind of thing a couple of decades ago。 It definitely has moments of greatness, and some really captivating characters。 Sometimes it's too creepy, sometimes it's too meandering。 I think I will keep reading the series for now。 。。。more

This was the first comic I ever read back in 2000 my freshman year of high school。 I loved being able to go back but also continuing from where I had left off。 These collections are wonderful and I highly recommend。

It took a few stories to get going, but I ended up loving it。

First time re-reading the series in about 20 years or so。 Turns out it’s still absolutely brilliant。 And despite having read these stories at least a dozen times before, I’m still noticing things for the first time。

(Zero spoiler review) 3。5/5I am lucky enough to have only recently started to read comics, and to have amassed a very sizeable collection in a short amount of time。 I have mentioned a number of times in my reviews that I love to hold back on reading certain special titles。 You can only read something for the first time once, after all。 I would hate to read all of most heralded reads in comics all at once, and then be left with a continual, slow and miserable slide into mediocrity or worse。 Needl (Zero spoiler review) 3。5/5I am lucky enough to have only recently started to read comics, and to have amassed a very sizeable collection in a short amount of time。 I have mentioned a number of times in my reviews that I love to hold back on reading certain special titles。 You can only read something for the first time once, after all。 I would hate to read all of most heralded reads in comics all at once, and then be left with a continual, slow and miserable slide into mediocrity or worse。 Needless to say, I'd been holding back Sandman till I had the whole set, and till the time felt right。 Having read a few DC shitfests recently (Injustice omnibus review incoming), I needed something good to wash the taste of Tom Taylor hot garbage out of my mouth。 I thought that title would be Sandman。 Seems at least for now, that I was wrong。 Don't misunderstand me, this was far from bad, and in all likelihood, this stumbling out of the gates is simply the gradual manifestation into something more meaningful, more wondrous down the line。 At least that's what I'm hoping anyway。 When this was good, it was really bloody good, but far too often, Gaiman's literary hubris and penchant to aimlessly wander around a narrative left me feeling confused and, well bored, quite frankly。 None more so typified than in the woefully average and utterly bewildering Sandman's Theatre story, collected here at the end。 It seemed more out of place than Amber Heard at a truth, honesty and integrity convention。 It hinted at something decent, but I loathed it and just wanted it to end。 The art on the series proper, was really good for the most part。 I don't believe Sandman was ever made famous by its artwork, yet it was both consistent, and consistently solid。 Whilst more technical artists may ply their trade regularly on more modern titles, it's 90's scratchy artistry really appealed, and helped kept me turning the pages when Gaiman was a little too up his own ass for my own good。 Again, it was still good, and sometimes great, but all too often, aimlessly meandered around a story, rather than simply telling the story that was there to be told。 It's a bit of a Gaiman trope at this point, at least for me, but this wasn't what I was expecting。 No doubt there will be more to say as I keep reading the series, so I won't burn all my opinions here, but this is a tad disappointing, considering my expectations。 Here's hoping it gets better。 3。5/5OmniBen。 。。。more

I have read several books by Gaiman but had never read the graphic novel that propelled him into the lime light。 When the library bought this edition, I decided that I should finally read it。 I'm so glad I did。 I don't know how to describe it, however。 Telling you that it's about a wizard who tries to capture Death and ends up capturing the King of Dreams, the Sandman instead gives you some idea of the beginning。 Telling you that the Sandman is kept locked in a crystal bubble for 70 years is imp I have read several books by Gaiman but had never read the graphic novel that propelled him into the lime light。 When the library bought this edition, I decided that I should finally read it。 I'm so glad I did。 I don't know how to describe it, however。 Telling you that it's about a wizard who tries to capture Death and ends up capturing the King of Dreams, the Sandman instead gives you some idea of the beginning。 Telling you that the Sandman is kept locked in a crystal bubble for 70 years is important but doesn't tell you anything except that his realm has changed in those 70 years and the Sandman must reclaim his realm and clear up everything that has happened while he was trapped。 The story is written by Gaiman and illustrated by many fabulous artists, so the look of the stories changes。 Some of the stories are very strange and the illustrations are strange as well。 My words can not do justice to this work。 You'll have to read it for yourself。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 The core of the story was great and I enjoyed it thoroughly, but the end of the book had additional stories that left me wondering if I should bother with the next installation。 I really had to power through it。

I'd allways felt it was a gross mistake on my part to not have read The Sandman。 As a reader who enjoyed comic books, and whose favorite title is Hellblazer, published by the DC comics imprint Vertigo, it should stand to reason that I should make of Sandman an obligatory read。 Heck, Constantine even shows up in a few issues。 Between that, and the constant heap of praise Sandman has allways received, i SHould have ran to get it!But somehow, I was under the misleading impression that The Sandman w I'd allways felt it was a gross mistake on my part to not have read The Sandman。 As a reader who enjoyed comic books, and whose favorite title is Hellblazer, published by the DC comics imprint Vertigo, it should stand to reason that I should make of Sandman an obligatory read。 Heck, Constantine even shows up in a few issues。 Between that, and the constant heap of praise Sandman has allways received, i SHould have ran to get it!But somehow, I was under the misleading impression that The Sandman was a pseudo-philosophical bore for goths by the way people talked about it, and ashtetic。 Well, having rwad it now, I can see how grossly mistaken I was!I'd describe this book as a literate, erudite, teansportive and wildly imaginitive approach to both fantasy and horror, whose text and artwork are stunningly realized。 Its as literary as comic books can get。In its early issues, the story seems to be somewhat scaterred and directionless (much like dreams are wont to be)。 But as the story progresses, it begins to cohalesce into a very meaningfull whole, and its early episodic nature serves a larger, interconnected plot。 Its quite brilliantly structured。 I do get the feeling that the early issues's episodic nature came from Gaiman being kind of uncertain as to what he meant to do with this world he created, and was very much still figuring out what direcion to take。 But Gaiman, being the fertile creative force he is, ended up weaving its dispersed elements into a cohesive whole, and creating a fully fleshed-out, wonderfully realised dream world that often leaks and directs the waking world。 Beauty, sorrow, sometimes both simultaneously abound, and its stories are a very revealing and thoughtfull meditation on what it means to be human, in all its its different aspects - our relations with deities and the unknown, as well the known world, our sexuality, grief, hapiness, sacrifice, fear, love, desire, despair, madness - all of humanity's rich spectrum of emotions。 Now, be warned。 For all the beauty this book contains, it also has a great deal of grotesque and disturbing horror。 Its fantasy/horror, with an emphasis on horror。 While not graphically depicted, there is a good deal of mentions of sexual abuse and violence throughout, including towards minors。 It's hard to stomach at times, and i can't recommend it to people who may feel disturbed or triguerred by such themes。 They are quite prevalent here。 As for the non sexual physical violence, that kind is very graphically depicted。 The artwork is sublime as well。 Sam Kieth, Mike Dringenberg and Malcolm Jones III do the artwork, and they perfectlly realize Gaiman's vision。The weakest part of this volume is Sandman Mystery Theatre, by Matt Wagner。 Its got a very good, pulpy concept and artwork, but its too self-satisfied with itself, losing itself in redundant and repetitive dialogue。For example, often full pages are made up of just background conversation that, while well rendered, do not serve the plot in the slightest。 I imagine its meant to convey the feelings of being in a crowded room, while at the same time setting up the time frame in which the story takes place。 However, an issue of Sandman conveys the same feeling and sense of time and place, with more clarity in three or four dialogue baloons than it takes a full page or two for Wagner to do so。There is a very good story and asthetic hidden behind these Wagner pages。 If it was 10 pages shorter, it could have been a very good story, but its smothered and rendered dull by its excessive, meandering length。 But its a minor lower point in an otherwise very strong volume, and thankfully its right at the end of it, and can eaasily be skipped, as it barely affects the plot of Sandman proper。 In short, if you want to read an extremely literate, brilliantly crafted comic that has depth and is not mere escapism, The Sandman is bound to satisfy, provided the reader is not easily disturbed by violence, mentions of sexual, pshychological and physical abuse or heavy themes in general。 。。。more

This is my second or third time to re-read this series。 It remains a rich experience with new surprises and depth。 I wish they would have new artists interpret the exact same script because much of the early work just doesn’t work - but it’s still a terrific read。

I'd been meaning to read this series for a while now。 I'm a fan of Neil Gaiman's work, and I used to be a huge comic lover as a child。 Honestly though, I found this to be underwhelming。 The plot is cool enough, and some of the art is really nice, but overall it just felt like a flat, sort of pulpy comic。 Nothing in it grabbed me or made me feel especially interested in reading the next books in the series。 Not the worst way to waste a couple hours, but wouldn't recommend it to anyone。 I'd been meaning to read this series for a while now。 I'm a fan of Neil Gaiman's work, and I used to be a huge comic lover as a child。 Honestly though, I found this to be underwhelming。 The plot is cool enough, and some of the art is really nice, but overall it just felt like a flat, sort of pulpy comic。 Nothing in it grabbed me or made me feel especially interested in reading the next books in the series。 Not the worst way to waste a couple hours, but wouldn't recommend it to anyone。 。。。more

I love this book for so many reasons。 It’s not like a comic that has non-stop action (it’s not all POW’s and BAM’s)。 This book has everything from action to in-depth story that is brilliantly written。 Gaiman can make even the mundane (such as running errands) a masterpiece。

Renee

I really wanted to like this because it’s so renowned, and I like a lot of Gaiman’s semi-mythological work, but I guess it just wasn’t what I expected? It is very episodic, and some of the storylines I enjoyed, but others were either creepy, weird, or disjointed in ways that were hard to read and made me just want to get to the next part and see if it was better。 I’ll keep reading because I want to see if it comes back to some of the storyline I liked, we’ll see。

AwfulFirst time I’ve ever disliked a Neil Gaiman book。 This was awful on all fronts。 It was all style and no substance and lacked any clear sense of plot or direction。 I get what he was going for with the style and concepts but it was over the top with horrid and disgusting imagery。 It’s so bad it actually made me lose respect for Neil Gaiman。

This is amazing! I can see why The Sandman is considered Neil Gaiman's magnum opus。 The story is incredible - and yes, though I found it jumped around a lot and spent much of the first sections rather confused, as it went on I got totally sucked in。 The art is also intense and wonderful, though to be warned, it is naturally very dark and gory。 This version comes with bonus material at the end where you get to see the original storyboard/outline, process, and character sketches by Gaiman et。 al a This is amazing!
