On my rating scale: a very good book。I really enjoyed this book， both as a treasure of design history and as a collection of still-applicable instruction。 Not only was every page beautiful and scanned with， frankly， SHOCKING detail （you can see even the most subtle changes in depth of ink on color coding swatches。 such wow） they're each designed beautifully enough to be a standalone poster。 Thank goodness I'm borrowing a friend's copy and can't rip out my favorite pages and put them on the wall。 On my rating scale: a very good book。I really enjoyed this book， both as a treasure of design history and as a collection of still-applicable instruction。 Not only was every page beautiful and scanned with， frankly， SHOCKING detail （you can see even the most subtle changes in depth of ink on color coding swatches。 such wow） they're each designed beautifully enough to be a standalone poster。 Thank goodness I'm borrowing a friend's copy and can't rip out my favorite pages and put them on the wall。 The real star though is the masterful wrangling of thousands of distinct （and previously disparate） design elements by designers Vignelli and Noorda。 Seriously they way they quantified what I considered unquantifiable has me spinning。 A kerning table for every possible letter combination？ WHAT！？This was a particular visual and organization treat having just finished Grid Systems by Josef Müller-Brockmann。 Unimark's tome is a near perfect example of the theory laid out in JMB's classic， which people have the nerve to call dated。The book also includes a short but insightful introduction by as Michael Bierut， a personal hero。 so。 bonus。 。。。more

If you geek out over the NYC subways or have an appreciation for the beauty contained in what could have been a spartan， utilitarian system， this book helps explain how it works as well as it does。 Moving millions of people a day is no easy task， and this manual explains the signage and design details involved in making it function。 The applications for this kind of thoughtful， considered design apply to anything that needs its workflow to work。

With this book Jesse， Hamish， and all the others who contributed to its production have created something of beauty and lasting importance。I’m a little embarrassed to admit that I had never heard of this book before the Kickstarter campaign to reprint it was advertised on Archinect; however， I do greatly enjoy design books， especially beautifully-made design books， so I backed the project and read the Manual online so that I could be sure I wanted a copy。Because the Kickstarter campaign was a gr With this book Jesse， Hamish， and all the others who contributed to its production have created something of beauty and lasting importance。I’m a little embarrassed to admit that I had never heard of this book before the Kickstarter campaign to reprint it was advertised on Archinect; however， I do greatly enjoy design books， especially beautifully-made design books， so I backed the project and read the Manual online so that I could be sure I wanted a copy。Because the Kickstarter campaign was a great success， Jesse and Hamish were able to upgrade the book， going from 4-color to 13-color printing， switching to stochastic printing， having the binding hand-sewn for greater durability， and having the title silk-screened for greater durability。 Jesse and Hamish’s determination to produce such a quality book is admirable。 Perhaps the most exciting change was the utilization of Massimo Vignelli’s personal copy for the reprint， a change made possible through the generosity of Luca Vignelli。 As can be imagined， all of this has come together to make this reprint a beautiful and equally useful book。 。。。more
