Summary
At the end of the twentieth-century an old woman sits among the birch trees and thinks back over her life， her loves， and the joys and tragedies that have befallen her family and her people。 She is a member of the Evenki tribe who wander the remote forests of north-eastern China with their herds of reindeer， living in close sympathy with nature at its most beautiful and cruel。
An idyllic childhood playing by the river ends with her father's death and the growing realisation that her mother's and uncle's relationship is not as simple as she thought。 Then， in the 1930s， the intimate， secluded world of the tribe is shattered when the Japanese army invades China。 The Evenki cannot avoid being pulled into the brutal conflict which marks the first step towards the end of their isolation。

（3，5 stars）This book definitely isn’t for readers who like a plot-driven story， as nothing really happens。 Then again， the story is a exploration of one woman’s life from beginning to end， so in one sense *everything* happens。 Before picking up the novel， I read up on the author and as I suspected， she isn’t Evenki herself but has studied Evenki and other Native cultures。 I can’t presume her writing is completely accurate， but at least the Evenki aren’t described as neither noble nor backwards ” （3，5 stars）This book definitely isn’t for readers who like a plot-driven story， as nothing really happens。 Then again， the story is a exploration of one woman’s life from beginning to end， so in one sense *everything* happens。 Before picking up the novel， I read up on the author and as I suspected， she isn’t Evenki herself but has studied Evenki and other Native cultures。 I can’t presume her writing is completely accurate， but at least the Evenki aren’t described as neither noble nor backwards ”savages”: the Evenki are written as a complex group of people with both ”good” and ”bad” people and customs。 The author’s writing style made reading about the most mundane and everyday things highly enjoyable。 The title of the English translation is different from the actual title， ”The Right Side of the Argun”。 The original title makes more sense for the story， which makes me wonder why it was changed。 The English title suggests the Evenki are on their last quarter， dying down， but the original title eludes more to the reality of Evenki people having their land split between Russia and China along the Argun river。 The title change is already affecting the international reading of the novel， as at least the Finnish translstion was made from the English one。 。。。more

As someone from a similar ethnic group which also originated around the Amur （Argun） river who has never lived a semi-nomadic lifestyle with reindeer， I found this book to be a small window into some of the more forgotten practices and traditions of a Tungusic people group。 The writing is lyrical and the relationships are emotive， showing both human nature and the natural world at its most beautiful and most ruthless states。With that being said， the author is Han。 Though she grew up and still li As someone from a similar ethnic group which also originated around the Amur （Argun） river who has never lived a semi-nomadic lifestyle with reindeer， I found this book to be a small window into some of the more forgotten practices and traditions of a Tungusic people group。 The writing is lyrical and the relationships are emotive， showing both human nature and the natural world at its most beautiful and most ruthless states。With that being said， the author is Han。 Though she grew up and still lives in the area in which this story is set， she remains an outsider to these traditions。 I feel that in parts， she doesn't do our beautiful culture justice with the constant use of sinicisms and the occasionally ethnic stereotypes such as portraying many of the Evenks as alcoholics and even one as a criminal。 I firmly believe that this book is worth a read， taking its relatively minor issues into account。 It's beautiful， poetic and harrowing and is unlike anything you've read before and will read in the the future。 。。。more

The Last Quarter of the Moon was an incredibly interesting story about the life of an old woman and of her tribe in the mountains of Northern China from the beginning of the 1900's to the end。 It chronicles life， death， romance， heartbreak， happiness， grief， and the trials of life。 The writing itself was never complex， but the story itself was captivating and hard to put down。 One word to describe this story would be sorrowful; it's never depressing for the sake of being depressing however， and The Last Quarter of the Moon was an incredibly interesting story about the life of an old woman and of her tribe in the mountains of Northern China from the beginning of the 1900's to the end。 It chronicles life， death， romance， heartbreak， happiness， grief， and the trials of life。 The writing itself was never complex， but the story itself was captivating and hard to put down。 One word to describe this story would be sorrowful; it's never depressing for the sake of being depressing however， and the moments of joy really shine through。 It's not an easy read- miscarriage， abuse， abortion， and more all feature quite prominently。 Every character explored in the story eventually comes into their own， even the worst of them all。 There's a few bad apples， but most characters really come across as people: some good with some bad。 Overall， it was a good read。 More of a 3。5 than a 4 in my opinion， but definitely something that will stick with you。 。。。more
