Summary

A disillusioned millennial ghostwriter who, quite literally, has some ghosts of her own, has to find her way back home in this sparkling adult debut from national bestselling author Ashley Poston。

Florence Day is the ghostwriter for one of the most prolific romance authors in the industry, and she has a problem—after a terrible breakup, she no longer believes in love。 It’s as good as dead。

When her new editor, a too-handsome mountain of a man, won’t give her an extension on her book deadline, Florence prepares to kiss her career goodbye。 But then she gets a phone call she never wanted to receive, and she must return home for the first time in a decade to help her family bury her beloved father。

For ten years, she’s run from the town that never understood her, and even though she misses the sound of a warm Southern night and her eccentric, loving family and their funeral parlor, she can’t bring herself to stay。 Even with her father gone, it feels like nothing in this town has changed。 And she hates it。

Until she finds a ghost standing at the funeral parlor’s front door, just as broad and infuriatingly handsome as ever, and he’s just as confused about why he’s there as she is。

Romance is most certainly dead 。 。 。 but so is her new editor, and his unfinished business will have her second-guessing everything she’s ever known about love stories。

Light read。 Fun and a little quirky

Hate when you figure out a major plot point part way through, and yet that didn't keep me from loving this book。 It was refreshing, you fall in love with the Day family。 Hate when you figure out a major plot point part way through, and yet that didn't keep me from loving this book。 It was refreshing, you fall in love with the Day family。 。。。more

I loved this book。 Florence and Benji will make you laugh and cry and then laugh again。 This book, to me, is about learning to ask for help, forgiveness and trusting yourself。 I'm not good at doing reviews on books without spoiling it so I'll just say, read it and see for yourself how good this book is。 I loved this book。 Florence and Benji will make you laugh and cry and then laugh again。 This book, to me, is about learning to ask for help, forgiveness and trusting yourself。 I'm not good at doing reviews on books without spoiling it so I'll just say, read it and see for yourself how good this book is。 。。。more

I’m conflicted about this book。 I loved Ben’s character, but it all felt a bit forced。 Don’t know if I’d read something from this author again。

4。5 This was so charming。 It made laugh and cry and I loved the perspective。 It did have ghosts。。。so if that's not your thing。。。this one probably isn't for you。 The author's note at the end was also excellent! 4。5 This was so charming。 It made laugh and cry and I loved the perspective。 It did have ghosts。。。so if that's not your thing。。。this one probably isn't for you。 The author's note at the end was also excellent! 。。。more

Oh。 I so enjoyed this book。 The premise was…。fantastic。 I don’t want to give too many details for all the peeps who go in blind, like me。 I was thoroughly invested in Florence from the very first page。 It also has me thinking a re-watch of Six Feet Under is in order。 Go read this book!

I’m rounding up here, if we are being honest。 A good start。 Really interesting and unique premise, and then it all fell apart。 It was like the author wrote herself into a corner and had to get out somehow, so the plot twist seemed like a total cop-out。 The descriptions of the town were nice but heavy-handed in figurative language。 The figurative language also completely overtook the physical aspect of the romance, which also seemed like a cop-out, almost like she was afraid her mom was going to I’m rounding up here, if we are being honest。 A good start。 Really interesting and unique premise, and then it all fell apart。 It was like the author wrote herself into a corner and had to get out somehow, so the plot twist seemed like a total cop-out。 The descriptions of the town were nice but heavy-handed in figurative language。 The figurative language also completely overtook the physical aspect of the romance, which also seemed like a cop-out, almost like she was afraid her mom was going to read the sex scene。 The writing also felt like a really fun first draft, but moved too fast where it needed to slow down, and slowed down when it could have been picked up a little。 Overall, I’m not sad I finished it, but it was not the highlight of the summer for me。 。。。more

This story was adorable but it was a bit boring at times。 Like, I was happy about it but then I was dragging myself through it。 Still an okay story。 It is the slowest of burns I'll tell you that, so beware。 This story was adorable but it was a bit boring at times。 Like, I was happy about it but then I was dragging myself through it。 Still an okay story。 It is the slowest of burns I'll tell you that, so beware。 。。。more

3。5/4“Everything that dies never really goes。 In little ways, it all stays。”Okay, this was a wacky premise but I picked it for that very reason because I wanted a light, fun read for a beach vacation。 And while it is a light, fun read, it also surprised me at how insightful it was when it came to grief and dealing with the loss of a parent。 Those passages were actually quite beautiful, and tinged with sadness and regret。 Of knowing and wishing you had spent more time with loved ones and only tru 3。5/4“Everything that dies never really goes。 In little ways, it all stays。”Okay, this was a wacky premise but I picked it for that very reason because I wanted a light, fun read for a beach vacation。 And while it is a light, fun read, it also surprised me at how insightful it was when it came to grief and dealing with the loss of a parent。 Those passages were actually quite beautiful, and tinged with sadness and regret。 Of knowing and wishing you had spent more time with loved ones and only truly realizing this once it is too late。 Would’ve, should’ve, could’ve…About halfway through it started to lose me a little because the plot slows down – Florence and her family are preparing for her father’s funeral but it hasn’t happened yet。 Florence still can’t write, and she is fantasizing about her dead editor… There were a few too many instances of this with Florence having to remind herself he’s dead and it started to become tiresome。 But even so, we find ourselves rooting for Florence and Ben despite the odds。 I guessed the ending but I enjoyed it nonetheless。 。。。more

I really liked all of the relationship dynamics throughout the book, both familial and romantic。 Benji is an absolute sweetheart, a good contender for my top 5 book men for the year (fox and max still have him beat by a good margin though)。 I also enjoyed a lot of the reflection on Florence's past and what it was like growing up surrounded by death。 However, I felt like there wasn't enough build-up into Ben still being alive and at times the writing was a bit clunky/cringey。 There are 2 distinct I really liked all of the relationship dynamics throughout the book, both familial and romantic。 Benji is an absolute sweetheart, a good contender for my top 5 book men for the year (fox and max still have him beat by a good margin though)。 I also enjoyed a lot of the reflection on Florence's past and what it was like growing up surrounded by death。 However, I felt like there wasn't enough build-up into Ben still being alive and at times the writing was a bit clunky/cringey。 There are 2 distinct moments I remember full body wincing。 "She let out a breath she didn't realize she was holding" and then "get down to business (to defeat the Huns)。" The latter felt like a joke that Poston wrote in while drafting the book and the editor thought it was funny enough to keep in but it completely removed me from the moment。 It was so unexpected and jarring that I didn't really even find it funny, it was just really distracting。 Also, I think this is more of a personal issue but as someone who reads a lot of romances, I didn't really enjoy all of the references to other romance writers。 It felt like some weird breaking the fourth wall meta moment and like we as the readers were supposed to be like "oh, I know that one!" idk it gave the same vibes as a millennial making a random harry potter joke/reference in their book。 I really did love Florence though and the reflection that she had on her past throughout the book。 。。。more

I have mixed feelings about this one。 On one hand it dealt with important issues and themes concerning family, community, death and grief and on the other it was a paranormal slightly cheesy at times fanfiction with romantic elements, humor unevenly spread。It also talked about books and romance books specifically, as well as publishing which was fun and relatable。It is very character-driven but our male mc, Benji, was a (view spoiler)[ ghost (hide spoiler)] and a rather ghostly character as opp I have mixed feelings about this one。 On one hand it dealt with important issues and themes concerning family, community, death and grief and on the other it was a paranormal slightly cheesy at times fanfiction with romantic elements, humor unevenly spread。It also talked about books and romance books specifically, as well as publishing which was fun and relatable。It is very character-driven but our male mc, Benji, was a (view spoiler)[ ghost (hide spoiler)] and a rather ghostly character as opposed to Florence who was so vivid and ALIVE。 I think uneven characterization is where I had most issues with it because, we were in Florence's head all the time。 Every thought, feeling, emotion was for us to witness。 Benji felt like her projection。。。And then there's the family dynamics。。。a few times I thought I had misheard things (audiobook), but NO!, my ears are fine! SPOILER (view spoiler)[ a daughter embalming her own father (hide spoiler)] 。。。 talk about professionalism when working at a funeral home! So~ more than once I cringed and felt awkward。。。 This family did not take take the funeral seriously or with heart。 And listening to the author's note, I realized maybe she wanted to escape the whole "seriousness" and grim part of what funeral brings and make it about people who are so used to this (one person in particular~) procedure that they've "dehumanized" it to not overwhelm themselves with emotions。 However, from what I know, really sensitive people would not work in such an environment to begin with。。。But it also brought to mind a book I read in my "plant-based-all-natty-only-truth" days titled How We Die: Reflections of Life's Final Chapter and, yes, to a degree it's about time we all accepted that death is not only "REAL" but a big part of life, community and family, and "How We Die", criticized how we, as society in the 20th century, put death into hospitals and hospices, as something contagious, to be afraid of and let "professionals" deal and take care of it。 I thought this would make an interesting discussion in 2022。Personally, the paranormal aspect is just not quite my element in a seemingly normal contemporary and the slow burn was taking ages。 spoiler: (view spoiler)[ this is a clean romance (hide spoiler)] I also think the funeral preparations took over and the romance was cast aside, unfortunately but the writing and story unfolding were engaging enough to make me want to continue and it had a couple of fun twists which made the book quite enjoyable。An interesting book and quite unique, but not without flaws and awkwardness。audiobook via storytel 。。。more

I didn’t really know what I was getting into when I started reading this book。 It’s started off normal and then boom there were ghost!! I was so surprised by how much I enjoyed it。 The writing was so beautiful and profound, it reminded me a lot of Emily Henry’s writing (which I basically treat like gospel) I found myself relating so much to main character and the way she kind of isolates herself。 This is definitely one of those books I read at the right time。 I can’t wait to read more of Ashley I didn’t really know what I was getting into when I started reading this book。 It’s started off normal and then boom there were ghost!!
