Summary

For Riley Oh, life as the Godrealm’s last fallen star is not all it’s cracked up to be。 Her new divine heritage doesn’t even come with cool magical powers; half of her friends and family (including her parents) can’t remember her; and to top it all off, the entire Gom clan is mad at her for killing the Cave Bear Goddess and stripping away their healing abilities。

But when their anger boils over and a group of witches curse Riley’s home, she knows it’s up to her to restore magic back to her clan – even if it means sneaking into the Spiritrealm。

Luckily, Riley has some backup。 Along with her sister, Hattie, Riley meets Dahl, a heaven-born boy with shockingly white hair and a fondness for toilets who might not be telling the whole truth about who he is。 Together they’ll fight vicious monsters, discover dark underwater worlds, and race to save the land of the dead from a fate that no one could have foreseen。

And this time, Riley won’t let anything get in her way。 Because she can’t shake the feeling that something terrible is coming their way – and the gifted community is going to need all the powers they can get。

This book I like hotteok。 Soft and chewy on the outside with sweet deliciousness on the inside。 The way the author played with the seven levels of hell and turned them into theme parks, restaurants and other attractions was surprising and amazing。 50 years on a rollercoaster sounds hideous o stead of fun。 Judges turned into CFO's (cheif fun officers) worked so well。 The h eww art of this book and the previous book is how much riley loves her family and friends and that love drives her actions。 I This book I like hotteok。 Soft and chewy on the outside with sweet deliciousness on the inside。 The way the author played with the seven levels of hell and turned them into theme parks, restaurants and other attractions was surprising and amazing。 50 years on a rollercoaster sounds hideous o stead of fun。 Judges turned into CFO's (cheif fun officers) worked so well。 The h eww art of this book and the previous book is how much riley loves her family and friends and that love drives her actions。 I keep wanting her to trust her friends and family more to help her instead of her trying to save her family and friends。 The author plays with that perfectly lead riley to good and bad decisions。 The analogs of mortal realms to spiritrealm locations were brilliant。 Stairbucks, who knew! This series is really interesting。 I don't know a lot about Korean Mythology, so I always find that part fascinating and fun with the twists and turns of the Gods。 This series is really interesting。 I don't know a lot about Korean Mythology, so I always find that part fascinating and fun with the twists and turns of the Gods。 。。。more

Thank you to Disney Publishing Worldwide and NetGalley for providing a copy of this eARC for review。 I love Riley's story。 She goes through so many difficulties and does her best to stay strong。 She falters sometimes, which makes her a more relatable and likeable character。 She is not perfect, which makes her even more wonderful。 I love the twist thrown in with the Fallen Moon。 (I'll keep details scarce to avoid spoilers。)"We see you。"I can't wait to read more about Riley Oh。 Thank you to Disney Publishing Worldwide and NetGalley for providing a copy of this eARC for review。 I love Riley's story。 She goes through so many difficulties and does her best to stay strong。 She falters sometimes, which makes her a more relatable and likeable character。 She is not perfect, which makes her even more wonderful。 I love the twist thrown in with the Fallen Moon。 (I'll keep details scarce to avoid spoilers。)"We see you。"I can't wait to read more about Riley Oh。 。。。more

Kim has created a very unique world for her readers, and I was ready to dive back into it。 Especially the mythology aspect。 I do love me some good mythology-driven books! So, needless to say, I had been sort of waiting for this one to release 。 。 。 and here it is!The Last Fallen Moon takes the readers on an adventure into the afterlife, filled with fast-paced adventure, exciting new places, family and friendship bonds, and lots of really cool Korean mythology。I actually ended up enjoying this book more than the first one。 It had more of a traditional portal fantasy feel, which I really like。 Plus, the afterlife is just super cool。 I’ve read quite a few “afterlife” books, but Kim has plenty of unique elements in hers that made the visit a real delight。 My Thoughts- In a slight divergence from the first book, The Last Fallen Moon reads more like a portal fantasy, transporting the readers to the Spiritrealm, where souls go after they’ve died and are awaiting their next life。 Let me tell you, the Spiritrealm is so freaking cool。 It’s part what you might expect of a Korean-based afterlife and part comedic subverted expectations。 That’s really all I want to say about that, because I don’t want to color your expectations! Discovering it for yourself is part of the fun。Very little of this book actually takes place in the real world。 Kim takes the fantasy aspects from the first book, ratchets them up, and changes the venue。 New place means new faces, right? This new crew is also composed of characters。 The kind that are super fun to hang out with and always full of surprises!- Korean readers will likely appreciate all the aspects of Korean culture that Kim slips into the pages of this book, and those from other cultures will have fun learning more about this unique mythology and beliefs。 I know a little about Korean mythology, so reading it on the page is very exciting for me。 I’m less familiar with aspects of the language and food, and I love the way Kim slips these in。 Gives me something to look up and learn more about! (Plus, food in books is always yum, right?!)What’s perhaps even more exciting are the stories and creatures that Kim includes。 Being set in the Spiritrealm opens up some pretty unique opportunities, right? There were a couple of stories that I’d never heard, and I absolutely loved being introduced to them。 I’m also a fan of new mythological creatures。 The deadlier, the better, right?! Well, if that’s your motto, too, you won’t be disappointed!- While Riley may come off as a very annoying character for the first part of this book (and honestly, from an adult perspective, what pre-teen isn’t?!), it’s all part of the wonderful character arc she experiences in this book。 Trust me, Riley is very frustrating early on。 It’s almost like she didn’t learn anything at all from the first book and keeps on making the same mistakes。 Of course, Riley is also young, and still at a critical point in her character journey。 I promise, she doesn’t stay this way forever (thank goodness!)。Despite my initial annoyance with her, Riley’s character arc in this book is *chef’s kiss*。 I was willing to put up with her childishness because what comes out at the end is brilliant and gives me a lot of hope for the third book。 Plus, she learns what it means to have a squad backing you, and I am all for this squad going into book three。- One of my favorite things about the first book was the superb family bonds, and that carries into this book。 Despite Riley’s family not remembering her, they’re all doing their best to stay together, and it’s clear that Riley is still very loved and supported by her adoptive family。 It’s not very often that you get adventure books with an adopted protagonist where the main personal conflict isn’t finding their parents or getting back their “family”。 Riley already has a family。 She’s quite happy with them, and she lacks for nothing (well 。 。 。 except magic, but there’s really no helping that)。 I can’t even begin to tell you how much I love the fact that Kim doubles down on this family bond and the strength between Riley and her adoptive family, no matter what。 It’s such an important thing to see in middle grade books, especially in my area, where we have a lot of middle grade readers who are being raised by someone other than their biologic parents! Sticking Points- I’m pretty sure I mentioned this in my review of the first book (and if not, I definitely meant to), but I absolutely hate that Riley refers to her penchant to cry at the drop of a hat as her “leaky-bladder eyes。” Yes, I realize this is a silly criticism and something very small to be the only sticking point of this book。 However, this is a hill I’m willing to die on。 Why? Because for some irrational reason, it really freaking annoys the heck out of me every time I read it!What I assume the author is alluding to is the things that hold liquid, also known as skins, pouches, water bottles, etc。 I don’t believe the author is comparing Riley’s crybaby nature to incontinence。 Unfortunately, that’s definitely how it reads。 The first several times I read this description, I was very confused, because my mind immediately went to the organ bladder, and being weepy is definitely not the same as incontinence。 It took me a while to remember the other type of bladder, which is a distinction I doubt most of the middle grade readers I know will be aware of。 So it’s confusing。What makes it worse is that it’s unnecessarily confusing。 Leaky eyes does the job just fine。 It doesn’t need a qualifier。 You gain nothing by saying “leaky-bladder eyes” instead of just saying Riley has leaky eyes。 Will middle grade readers care at all about what the author calls it? No, of course not。 But darn it, this is my review。 xD 。。。more

This series continues to make me so happy! I love that this book continues to remind the reader that mistakes aren't bad。。。and they don't define you。 Rather, how you respond to the challenge does。 I also love the journey of self acceptance that Riley goes through--of herself and of her ever changing circumstances。 Her friends and her sister also go through this journey and they all handle it differently, showing a universally relatable experience so many of us go through。I appreciate Graci Kim o This series continues to make me so happy! Actual rating: 3。5 starsThis was a great follow up to the series, and it explores an entire section of Korean mythology in the form of the spirit realm/underworld。 This time the story is more plot driven, and instead of dealing with an array of characters, only a few ones play a central role to this chapter’s adventures。 Considering how the book unfolds its ending to introduce what seems to be the final battle, the sequel kind of serves as a crossing point to get where the characters need to be, Actual rating: 3。5 starsThis was a great follow up to the series, and it explores an entire section of Korean mythology in the form of the spirit realm/underworld。 This time the story is more plot driven, and instead of dealing with an array of characters, only a few ones play a central role to this chapter’s adventures。 Considering how the book unfolds its ending to introduce what seems to be the final battle, the sequel kind of serves as a crossing point to get where the characters need to be, based on the previous events。 。。。more

This went on just a shade too long to be a 5-star。 I loved the mix of Korean history and words in the writing, placed there naturally as though of course readers will know what H-Mart or gimchi or Pepero are (if not, there's a glossary in the back)。 Riley's adventures in Book One made her life complicated because no one remembers her (read the book to understand that) so it makes sense that she feels that the solution to everything it to do it herself。 Of course, that's not quite how things work This went on just a shade too long to be a 5-star。 I loved the mix of Korean history and words in the writing, placed there naturally as though of course readers will know what H-Mart or gimchi or Pepero are (if not, there's a glossary in the back)。 Riley's adventures in Book One made her life complicated because no one remembers her (read the book to understand that) so it makes sense that she feels that the solution to everything it to do it herself。 Of course, that's not quite how things work, and she almost immediately finds assistance in the form of a T-Birdesque Dahl, complete with popped collar and 50s phrases。 Visiting the Spiritrealm and the various neighborhoods takes up the majority of the book and that was fun。 However, the mystery behind what's going wrong with the Spiritrealm and how Riley, Dahl and the others can fix it could have been another book。ARC provided by publisher。 。。。more

So to start, was it as good as the first one? Yes! Second books can often be boring because they are often just moving the plot in ways to get to the next book (either the final book or another plot mover book)。 This book did have some second book grind moments, but I was satisfied with the amount of new and exciting。 Saying all of that, I didn't find this book as engaging as the first one。 I'm not sure what was different, but Fallen Moon did not have the same time stop effect as Fallen Star whe So to start, was it as good as the first one? I was not expecting him to be him, but I am so happy that it was。 I would say more but spoilers!2。 The friend group。 They're really becoming friendship goals and I love that you feel a bit of resistance from Riley like she knows it is too good to be true。 It makes her seem more human and relatable for any age。3。 The Hattie plot line。 It was sad and hard, but it just felt right and I feel like it's really setting her up for something in later books。 I'm ready for her to have a book for entirely her story。4。 Speaking of characters who need their own stories。 I totally need more time spent with David and his laboratory。5。 The setting。 It was just so creative and descriptive。 You really felt like you were in the moment。 Sometimes I laughed at how it was envisioned to be so modern。6。 The modernization of the judges。 This was done so well。7。 Memories。 I am so glad we didn't have to spend multiple books on that plot line。8。 The end! I cannot wait for the next book! It's hard to say why without spoilers, but the way that people can move around is exciting!9。 The patron solution was creative and added an element of hope for the future books。 I'm really curious as to how it plays out in the next book。10。 The way the author can delicately write about difficult topics in an age appropriate way that kids can understand, but it's also written in a way that makes you think as an adult。 It's a really careful way of writing that many authors rarely hit just right。Things that I found meh:1。 The antagonists (trying not to spoil) got really whiny and annoying。 It could have been the intended effect, and if so then well done。 I kind of feel like too much time was spent on them without much plot development other than they're selfish and corrupt。2。 The goddess part seemed like the story was written and then suddenly there was an, "Oh no, I forgot this part and need it for the overarching story。 How do I fit this in。" It seemed really crammed in there。 I did not feel like it was intertwined into the story as well the goddess was in the first book。 3。 The underwater politics storyline。 It was too cheesy and cringe。 Maybe it would work for the intended age group, but I could have done without the cheesy politician part。4。 The sharpie thing。 I like the sharpie thing but I need more backstory on how it just seemed so fated for the moment。 It was too perfect with too little explained。 Maybe it's coming in a later book? All in all, this book did not let me down after loving the first book。 I cannot wait to pre-order the third book! 。。。more

Rest assured I will be reading anything Graci Kim puts out in the following years!!It’s been a couple days since I finished The Last Fallen Moon and I must say that this novel has all the family feels and I’m not even sugarcoating it! There were albeit a couple ( more!) times I teared up while reading because the relationship and portrayal of love was just so close to home。 Going into the book, I definitely had high hopes for this since The Last Fallen Star was one of my favourite reads last year, and though the book starts off paler in comparison to the rest of the story, the plot picked up soon after and I wasn’t able to put the book down! This year has really been such a great year for middle grade novels and I will not stop saying so! One of my main reasons for growing out of middle grade fantasy (other than actually growing up, of course) is because after a certain point, I felt like all the books just blurred into one single story recycled repeatedly。 The Last Fallen Moon does not fall into that, thankfully! A perfect blend of exploring emotional relations and Korean mythology, Graci Kim creates a truly magical world for readers to get sucked into。This novel follows our protagonist Riley Oh after finding out that she’s the Godrealm’s last fallen star。 It picks up about a couple months after book one。 Riley’s loved ones now have no recollections of her and Riley is a shell of the person she initially used to be。 Things get worse when she recieves threats from unknown witches, leading her into the Spiritrealm, in hopes of restoring peace to the Gifted Clans, where she also meets new characters and creatures。Also if you’re asking me to pick a favourite character relationship, let it be known that I just can’t! That’s how beautifully it’s written in here—Riley’s sisterly bond with Hattie and her unconditional love towards her parents and friends is just so heartwarming!! Starting off, to be honest, Riley was a teeny bit annoying but it was all worth it because her charcter arc goes through a huge development, especially with her befriending more people and figuring it all out slowly but steadily。Read the full review on my blog! *Please Note: This is the second book in a series that should be read in order。 There may be spoilers for book one (though I try to keep those to a minimum)。 If you are new to the series, you can check out my review of book one- The Last Fallen Star- HERE*The Last Fallen Moon is the second book in the middle grade fantasy series, called Gifted Clans by Graci Kim。 The Gifted Clans series is based on Korean Mythology and I really enjoyed the first book, The Last Fallen Star, so I was super excited *Please Note: This is the second book in a series that should be read in order。 There may be spoilers for book one (though I try to keep those to a minimum)。 If you are new to the series, you can check out my review of book one- The Last Fallen Star- HERE*The Last Fallen Moon is the second book in the middle grade fantasy series, called Gifted Clans by Graci Kim。 The Gifted Clans series is based on Korean Mythology and I really enjoyed the first book, The Last Fallen Star, so I was super excited to dive into book two。 I am happy to report that The Last Fallen Moon did not disappoint。 I loved this sequel novel- the pacing was wonderful, the story flowed seamlessly from the first book to the second and it was so great to meet up with Riley again。 I really enjoyed The Last Fallen Moon and I am so pumped to continue on with the Gifted Clans series。The Last Fallen Moon picks up after the events of book one- with our heroine Riley saving the world! You would think that would earn her some favor, but instead the Gom clan is mad at her!
Because when Riley did her thing saving the world, she also accidentally caused the Gom clan's magically abilities to disappear。 They are not too pleased about the loss of their magic。
I was so anxious to see what was going to happen with Hattie in this book because I so love the bond that her and Riley share。 To try and make things right, Riley heads to the spirit realm to restore what was lost to the Gom clan。 (see the spoiler block for more info)  Riley is a character that is easy to love and easy to root for。 She is fierce, caring, independent but also able to learn from her mistakes。 I am loving her character growth。This adventure is chocked full of heart, trials, road blocks, character growth and more than a few laughs along the way。 I loved it! I am really enjoying learning more about Korean mythology and I am hoping to find even more fantasy books based on Korean myths because they are fascinating。 The Last Fallen Moon has all of the fun, charm and magical adventures that I love in Rick Riordan's stories as well as all of the books in his imprint。 If you are a fan of magic, mythology and quest types stories, The Gifted Clams series is a great story for you to check out。 I can't wait to continue on with this series。 。。。more

THE LAST FALLEN MOON continues Riley's story with a new fantasy adventure。 As we learned in the first book, Riley is the Last Fallen Star, a piece of the dark sun that fell from the Godrealm's sky。 Within the Gifted community, Riley has made some enemies, particularly of the Gom clan, and she is still feeling the effects of the compromises she made along the way, like the deal with a dokkebai that made it so that her family would not remember her。When her family home is cursed, Riley decides tha THE LAST FALLEN MOON continues Riley's story with a new fantasy adventure。 As we learned in the first book, Riley is the Last Fallen Star, a piece of the dark sun that fell from the Godrealm's sky。 Within the Gifted community, Riley has made some enemies, particularly of the Gom clan, and she is still feeling the effects of the compromises she made along the way, like the deal with a dokkebai that made it so that her family would not remember her。When her family home is cursed, Riley decides that she must do the impossible。 She will travel to the Spiritrealm and find a new patron to restore magic to the Gom clan。 Luckily, she isn't going alone, accompanied by the only person in her family who remembers her, her sister Hattie。 They soon meet Dahl on their way, a boy who wants to help them and may have a more critical role than they could have expected。What I loved: This was another fantastic installment in an engaging and fast-paced middle grade fantasy adventure series。 The plot takes the reader through other realms and mythology that was well-constructed, lush, and fascinating。 This expands the world of the first book with a connected but new problem, new characters, and further information about Riley and the worlds around her。 While you do need to read the first to understand this, the key information is recapped early in the book, which is really helpful。Riley remains a really genuine character, trying to find her place in the world and determine who she will be, much like the intended middle grade audience - though with some fantasy escalation。 Hattie is also a really fantastic character, caring for her sister and bringing through the theme of family in a compelling way。 Dahl, the new character, was absolutely delightful with his interest in toilets and heartfelt manner。 Other secondary characters are also endearing and make for an unforgettable cast。Themes around family, friendship, memory, finding your place, fixing your mistakes, and community make this a compelling story。 The blend of humor along with action-adventure and heartfelt moments are sure to captivate readers。 Much like the first, this is a book that readers will devour。Final verdict: An engaging and heartfelt middle grade fantasy adventure, THE LAST FALLEN MOON continues a must-read series with a new quest and friends。 Highly recommend reading this series! Please note that I received an ARC。 All opinions are my own。 。。。more
