Summary

This comprehensive cat care guide from the star of the hit Animal Planet show "My Cat from Hell," Jackson Galaxy, shows us how to eliminate feline behavioral problems by understanding cats' instinctive behavior。
Cat Mojo is the confidence that cats exhibit when they are at ease in their environment and in touch with their natural instincts--to hunt, catch, kill, eat, groom, and sleep。 Problems such as litter box avoidance and aggression arise when cats lack this confidence。 Jackson Galaxy's number one piece of advice to his clients is to help their cats harness their mojo。
This book is his most comprehensive guide yet to cat behavior and basic cat care, rooted in understanding cats better。 From getting kittens off to the right start socially, to taking care of cats in their senior years, and everything in between, this book addresses the head-to-toe physical and emotional needs of cats--whether related to grooming, nutrition, play, or stress-free trips to the vet。

This book should be required reading for anyone with a cat。 Preferably before adoption so everything can be set up properly ahead of time。 I love Jackson, his show My Cat from Hell (terrible name, but great show), and now this book。 The insight into cat behavior is invaluable and has helped my boyfriend and I better understand how to care for our brand new family member。

Really helpful and useful book。 Full of practical advice, very "readable", and even philosophical in a good way。 A must read for cat owners。 This information has really helped improve not only my cat's life, but my entire families。 We did not have major "cat from Hell" problems, but this book will help you avoid those kinds of situations (as it has for us, since we know what to do with major life changes)。Highly recommended for all pet owners and parents in general。 Really helpful and useful book。 Full of practical advice, very "readable", and even philosophical in a good way。 A must read for cat owners。 This information has really helped improve not only my cat's life, but my entire families。 We did not have major "cat from Hell" problems, but this book will help you avoid those kinds of situations (as it has for us, since we know what to do with major life changes)。Highly recommended for all pet owners and parents in general。 。。。more

It's always nice knowing all the things I'm doing wrong--which is everything。 Fun fact I learned: cats descended from the Old World (Asia, Africa, Europe) lay with their paws tucked under their chest while cats descended from the New World (Americas) lay with their paws stretched out front, and finally cats descended from the Crazy World (Australia and Antarctica) have switchblades for paws。 It's always nice knowing all the things I'm doing wrong--which is everything。 Fun fact I learned: cats descended from the Old World (Asia, Africa, Europe) lay with their paws tucked under their chest while cats descended from the New World (Americas) lay with their paws stretched out front, and finally cats descended from the Crazy World (Australia and Antarctica) have switchblades for paws。 。。。more

I've been a cat guardian for 6+ years and finally read this book when adding a new cat to the family。 I really appreciate his underlying values of empathy and relationship (with the onus on humans that we need to do the work) as well as practical steps to take to support a more healthy and functional home environment。 I'd recommend this to every cat parent。 I've been a cat guardian for 6+ years and finally read this book when adding a new cat to the family。 I really appreciate his underlying values of empathy and relationship (with the onus on humans that we need to do the work) as well as practical steps to take to support a more healthy and functional home environment。 I'd recommend this to every cat parent。 。。。more

From humble cat-less and cat-skeptic beginnings I have gradually, permanently become a "cat person," and, now, having read Jackson Galaxy's "Total Cat Mojo," I feel like a much smarter and more competent cat parent。 This is a breezy, witty read, but it's full of sound advice rooted in the basic ideas that (1) your "domestic" cat is really not so evolutionarily far removed from its wild cat origins, and you as a cat parent must learn to accommodate and satisfy his "Raw Cat" desires and (2) your r From humble cat-less and cat-skeptic beginnings I have gradually, permanently become a "cat person," and, now, having read Jackson Galaxy's "Total Cat Mojo," I feel like a much smarter and more competent cat parent。 This is a breezy, witty read, but it's full of sound advice rooted in the basic ideas that (1) your "domestic" cat is really not so evolutionarily far removed from its wild cat origins, and you as a cat parent must learn to accommodate and satisfy his "Raw Cat" desires and (2) your relationship with your cat begins and grows when you realize that he is not aloof or evil or selfish or demonic or whatever-- that he is, in fact, a living creature like you, with emotional texture that requires you to be attentive and empathetic。 In its refusal to countenance ideas of domination or stereotypes about human or cat behavior (indeed, a lot of Jackson Galaxy's cat advice would probably work pretty well with your you-sized-and-shaped friends, too), "Total Cat Mojo" is not unlike the book I read prior to it, James Joyce's "Ulysses。" 。。。more

It’s a pretty comprehensive guide for cat owners。 The author walks us through all aspects of owning a pet cat, from adopting (and how many kittens to adopt and how to make them comfortable at their new homes), to the end of their life。 It also clarifies some of the stereotypes and stigma of cats we had with examples。 However, the writing could be more condense。 Most of the time it’s just a lot of meaningless talk and monologue that should have been removed by the editor。 Anyway, I purchased this It’s a pretty comprehensive guide for cat owners。 The author walks us through all aspects of owning a pet cat, from adopting (and how many kittens to adopt and how to make them comfortable at their new homes), to the end of their life。 It also clarifies some of the stereotypes and stigma of cats we had with examples。 However, the writing could be more condense。 Most of the time it’s just a lot of meaningless talk and monologue that should have been removed by the editor。 Anyway, I purchased this book and expected to learn more in depth about cats, as I was becoming a cat owner again。 And I learned something from the book, but not as much as I have expected。 。。。more

What I liked: Jackson Galaxy gives a thorough explanation of why cats behave the way they do, their primary behaviors and 24 hour cycles, and solutions for providing them the environment, food, litter boxes, and toys they need to thrive。 I liked how he explained in detail how to use a feather wand, for example, to satisfy a cat’s need to hunt。 I also like the sections on how to make your home safe and comforting if you own cats and dogs。 My breeder gave me some of the same advice found in the bo What I liked: Jackson Galaxy gives a thorough explanation of why cats behave the way they do, their primary behaviors and 24 hour cycles, and solutions for providing them the environment, food, litter boxes, and toys they need to thrive。 I liked how he explained in detail how to use a feather wand, for example, to satisfy a cat’s need to hunt。 I also like the sections on how to make your home safe and comforting if you own cats and dogs。 My breeder gave me some of the same advice found in the book with regard to setting up a home base and how to introduce your dog to your new cat。 The book’s confirmation of ideas was comforting。What I didn’t like: Jackson Galaxy wants pet owners to not only make your home cat friendly, he wants us to prioritize all spaces for the cat(s)。 I find this advice unrealistic unless you want your cat to be the center of all things ( I don’t)。 Husband and I rejected some advice, finding it impractical: allowing a cat to hunt and pounce on you and the furniture at night because this is her natural instinct deprives the owner of sleep to function。 We found that Ignoring this behavior didn’t make it go away。 After two sleepless nights of this, we put our cat in an adjoining master bathroom, door closed, with a cat bed, food, water, and toys。 After two nights, no meowing or jumping at door and all has been quiet for eight hours every night since。Another impractical piece of advice is to buy and try out several types of litter pans and several types of litter to see which one your cat likes。 If you have a cat going outside the box- sure- try a different litter- But to establish a plan at the outset is not affordable, especially if you’re buying all the other cat stuff。So- worth reading and using as a reference but some advice I’d take with a grain of salt。 。。。more

Super informative。 And, it has definitely help me better understand my cat! This book is easy to understand and gives really examples, as well as concrete ways you can make changes to give your cat a better life and environment。 My only negative point is that I felt the organization of the book was a bit messy。 I felt like there could be a better way to organize the ideas so that it would flow easily and make it easier to see the big picture。

A very helpful guide to cat-care, with a focus on empathy and understanding how cats' natural instincts guide their inner logic。 I have already started implementing quite a couple of his techniques。 Fun illustrations。 At times a bit repetitive and overly sentimental。 A very helpful guide to cat-care, with a focus on empathy and understanding how cats' natural instincts guide their inner logic。 I have already started implementing quite a couple of his techniques。 Fun illustrations。 At times a bit repetitive and overly sentimental。 。。。more

This book was an incredibly helpful guide。 I wish I had read/purchased it before getting our second cat, because there’s really so much in there that would’ve been helpful。 I love how practical and applicable this book is, while also having an underlying philosophical message about what being a pet owner means that helps you weave together all the to do’s。 I’m also shocked by how well written it is。 I’m a sucker for acknowledgements, but it’s rare that they make me tear up。 The only reason that This book was an incredibly helpful guide。 I wish I had read/purchased it before getting our second cat, because there’s really so much in there that would’ve been helpful。 I love how practical and applicable this book is, while also having an underlying philosophical message about what being a pet owner means that helps you weave together all the to do’s。 I’m also shocked by how well written it is。 I’m a sucker for acknowledgements, but it’s rare that they make me tear up。 The only reason that I’m not giving this book 5 stars is because I wish it were more specific in some areas。 For example, I’d really like to know how long I should play with my cats every day and how many times。 I’m fully on board that playing with your cat is as important as walking your dog! And even that I will get bored, but the point is that they are engaged。 But a ballpark on how much time to spend, even if it’s not a hard and fast rule, would be exceptionally helpful。 This isn’t the only detail like this that I wish was included。 (Although obviously it’s the one I feel most passionately about!)Besides that small gripe, this was an exceptionally fun and helpful book。 I enjoyed reading it cover to cover, even the parts that aren’t relevant for my home。 。。。more

If you only read ONE book about cats, make it this oneIf I had my way, every guardian, or potential guardian, would HAVE to read this book before adopting a cat。 Although I’m besotted by cats, I’ve ‘worked’ mostly with dogs as an adult - they’re not so much chalk and cheese as, well, OK (and pardon the pun) cats and dogs: they both eat meat, they both live in our homes and share our lives and they both have four legs, a head and a tail and… that’s it。 If you (like I) have been guilty of ‘doggify If you only read ONE book about cats, make it this oneIf I had my way, every guardian, or potential guardian, would HAVE to read this book before adopting a cat。 Although I’m besotted by cats, I’ve ‘worked’ mostly with dogs as an adult - they’re not so much chalk and cheese as, well, OK (and pardon the pun) cats and dogs: they both eat meat, they both live in our homes and share our lives and they both have four legs, a head and a tail and… that’s it。 If you (like I) have been guilty of ‘doggifying’ your cat’s behaviour then you really need to read this。 My cat is, happily, fairly confident and outgoing - he doesn’t exhibit many of the behaviours discussed in this book。 But I thought I’d read it anyway, just to get a better understanding of what makes him tick, and man, I’m glad I did。 I now have a much better understanding of some of the things he does, how he likes to be loved (and conversely, how he doesn’t like to be loved) and how some very simple, easy, cheap and quick modifications to my home will transform his life: simple ’catification’ right there! I’m currently trying to convince my significant other that a few unobtrusive shelves could enhance our cat’s life significantly, and that another cat would be a worthwhile and cherished addition to our family, I’ve been a fan of Jackson, since catching the early My Cat From Hell while channel surfing many years ago but I’m so thrilled I found this book。 One of the best tenners I’ve ever spent。 Thank you Jackson and Catifcation Nation xx 。。。more

During the first lockdown I at one point came across a Youtube video of an episode of 'My Cat from Hell'。 It was fun to watch and I binged the show for a few hours, enjoying it。 So when I saw a second hand copy of this book being offered basically for free, I couldn't resist my curiosity。 The book consists of 4 sections。 The first 2 sections of the book are a charming introduction to cats。 In section 3, more attention is given to specific ways (tools) to increase cat confidence, and section 4 di During the first lockdown I at one point came across a Youtube video of an episode of 'My Cat from Hell'。 It was fun to watch and I binged the show for a few hours, enjoying it。 So when I saw a second hand copy of this book being offered basically for free, I couldn't resist my curiosity。 The book consists of 4 sections。 The first 2 sections of the book are a charming introduction to cats。 In section 3, more attention is given to specific ways (tools) to increase cat confidence, and section 4 dives into specific problems that owners commonly might have with their cats and ways to go about solving them。 The good:This book is very clear on the difference between cats and dogs。 There's no grand promises of creating the perfect show animal that adapts completely to your needs。 Instead it spends a lot of time on managing expectations and teaching you how to work with your cat。 Reading this book would definitely give a very good basis for future cat guardians to work from, and I believe that anyone following his advice is very likely to end up with a happy cat (or two)。Jackson is honest and relatively judgement free about topics like food, declawing and indoor/outdoor cats。 Declawing gets a big NO from him, but he's forgiving to people who did it when they didn't know better。 With food and indoor/outdoor he clearly shows his preferences, but he does give alternatives。 For example while he really thinks cats should not go inside, he does give guidance for people who do leave their cats outside。I can definitely see myself implementing some of his advice on Catification and how to play with cats when I get a cat again。The bad:In this book, a very large portion is dedicated to what feel like repeats of the same ideas。 For example, one thing that keeps coming back is: 'introducing cats to X', with X being 'other cats', 'dogs' and 'babies'。 Later, it talks about how when cats don't like each other, you should separate them and reintroduce them to each other with basically the same strategy。 It seems like a solid strategy, and I see how it can be adapted for different animals, but it does make for a less exciting read when it keeps repeating the same strategy step by step instead of just quickly listing a few ways to adapt the strategy to different situations and then moving on。The writer loves buzzword-y terms and analogies (which have the benefit of grabbing the attention and making the subject easy to remember, so it makes sense that someone who is usually speaking at conventions or on TV will use words like that) but in this book not all of the terms and analogies are given enough depth and explanation。 For example, when talking about ways to increase traffic flow to avoid incidents and increase confidence in cats, he mentions 'traffic circles' (cat trees) can be useful, while 'revolving doors' (a climbing structure like a cat tree) can help avoid dead ends, while 'escape routes' are useful to keep a cat from being cornered。 Each term is bolded as if it introduces an important new concept, but after this paragraph none of them are mentioned again。 And I'm just left with questions。What exactly is the difference between a traffic circle, a revolving door and an escape route? How exactly do you use these differently? It is a shame that this happened, because 'catification' is one of the few completely new concepts to me, so those were the chapters I was interested in the most。 So in the end this book both feels padded unnecessarily and like it fails to properly introduce the most interesting parts。Conclusion:All in all, this is a fun book for people new to cats, however for long time cat owners (sorry, guardians) a lot of the book will be old news。 The parts that are novel are interesting but left me with questions。 I enjoyed the beginning of the book and parts of the latter half, but some bits I definitely ended up skimming only because of the repeats。 。。。more
