Beautiful adventure story for teens and young adults。 Even as a 30 something adult I still enjoy this book, I rate this very highly。 Not as dramatic and not riddled with war and battles like lord of the rings but more fantastic adventures with a group of characters that you grown to really love。

Wonderful, like visiting with an old friend and listening, yet again, to all of his stories。

I have read or listened to this book three times now, and loved it every time。 The first time I heard it was in Romania and my dad read it to the family。 Then I listened to it on audio read by Andy Sercis。 Let me just say, he is an amazing voice actor。 And then we listened to that again! So good。 Tolkien's imagination is endless, and his descriptions in the book are so powerful。 He was not trying to write an allegory, but in some ways he wrote one about the war。 (WWII) I love the little bits of I have read or listened to this book three times now, and loved it every time。 The first time I heard it was in Romania and my dad read it to the family。 Then I listened to it on audio read by Andy Sercis。 Let me just say, he is an amazing voice actor。 And then we listened to that again! An amazing story, very in depth, my one complaint is that because it was written so long ago some of the sentences are difficult to follow, and I wish there was more detail in the final battle, but other than that I have only compliment。

3。5。 Great book for children。 Middle bit didn’t seem to have much pacing I。e something big happened and was immediately followed by another big event。 Weirdly I enjoyed the films more as they were able to explore characters and plots more and even invent some that fit quite nicely

A fantastical tale of, well。。。Hobbits! Need I say more about the origins of The Lord of The Ring? Wow wow wow those last few Chapters!🫢My feeling is like a roller coster from beginning to end。 I loved it-i hated it-deeply in love again- marveled! An unexpected adventure of 14(13 dwarves and a hobbit)starts with a tea party inside Bilbo Baggings cosy, snug little hobbit hole。 Nothing can be more merrier than a May day on which tobacco loop rings bring such joyful, chatty while clumsy, chaotic group of strangers to Mr baggings doorsteps。I am so drew in by Tolkien‘s imagination,Trolls,Goblins,Elves Wow wow wow those last few Chapters!🫢My feeling is like a roller coster from beginning to end。 I loved it-i hated it-deeply in love again- marveled! An unexpected adventure of 14(13 dwarves and a hobbit)starts with a tea party inside Bilbo Baggings cosy, snug little hobbit hole。 Nothing can be more merrier than a May day on which tobacco loop rings bring such joyful, chatty while clumsy, chaotic group of strangers to Mr baggings doorsteps。I am so drew in by Tolkien‘s imagination,Trolls,Goblins,Elves,Wargs(wolves),Beorn(bear),Lakemen,Eagles,Dwarves,Wizard,Necromancer, Dragons(smaug)last but not the least, hobbits!Yet all creatures has their own set of background stories and history, their own faults and merits, and being so neatly and magnificently knitted together。 That Battle of Five Armies!🫡Nevertheless, what I admire most of Tolkien is that he writes so honestly about soul and intention,he makes you hate the dwarves so much for being so dump and timid, selfish and greedy, that you might in a slip of mind just give up the whole book, but in the end realize that this is part of nature,if there is good(Bilbo, never loses himself despite of the ring),there is bad(Thorin, bewildered in possesses of the treasure )。 If where is bad(Thorin),this is worse(Goblin)。The world is not ruled by one kind of beings, and you should not think one way but another。 Treasure will bring you freedom,it will also cost you death。All depend on how you view it and utilize it。Favorite part of adventure;Barrels Out of Bond❤️🪵 。。。more

“There is always more about you than anyone expects!”earthy, vivid, descriptive, a tale of how we are all sufficiently capable of adventure unbeknownst to us and looking out for those around us。

This book requires some backstory。 So my Dad is a big Hobbit fan。 I have memories of my Dad reading this to me as a kid, so this book has a lot of nostalgia with it。 Like when I think of the Hobbit, I think of my Dad cause our love of this book/series/world is something we have in common。 I read this book twice as a kid and liked it both times。 But now that I'm an adult, I wanted to reread this book to see if this book is actually good or I just like it because it's something that I can bond wit This book requires some backstory。 So my Dad is a big Hobbit fan。 I have memories of my Dad reading this to me as a kid, so this book has a lot of nostalgia with it。 Like when I think of the Hobbit, I think of my Dad cause our love of this book/series/world is something we have in common。 I read this book twice as a kid and liked it both times。 But now that I'm an adult, I wanted to reread this book to see if this book is actually good or I just like it because it's something that I can bond with my Dad over。 Okay so here's my actual book。 1。 I forgot how much of a kids story this is? Reminded me of the Narnia books a little。 Like super short and not very detailed and read very much like a kid's bedtime story (maybe that's why my Dad read it to me as a bedtime story haha)。 I wasn't a huge fan of this? Like I wanted more! More dialogue! More detail! But it was quite basic in the fact that it was just a story of these people walking through the woods (obviously there was more to it but you get the gist)。 2。 I love character driven plots and this definitely wasn't super character driven。 I'm not for sure if it was even plot driven? Like I think the reason these (I'm including LOTR) books are so popular is because of the crazy world that Tolkien created。 But you really don't get a lot of insider scoop on the characters (maybe a little on Bilbo)。 I wish there were more descriptions of the characters feelings, not just their dialogue。 And even the plot wasn't super intriguing? It went by sooo fast especially the ending。 Like the battle of five armies was like 8 pages? And that's it? 3。 Gandalf was a little disappointing。。。 I think I unknowingly relate him to Dumbledore because they're both old wizards with beards and played by Ian McKellan。 But Dumbledore is way cooler in my opinion。 In the Harry Potter world, it seems like Dumbledore is much more all-knowing。 Like he can do a lot more and just overall knows a lot。 But like a bunch of people had no idea who Gandalf was and he was not very confident in a lot (other than his trust in Bilbo which I love)。 I think I expected Gandalf to be a very important/big character in the Middle Earth realm and well, he's not。 Not a bad thing but just something to note。 He did pull a Dumbledore a couple times by disappearing and reappearing randomly and then being real discreet about where he'd been。 4。 Not a criticism or note on the book but more of the movies。。。 I'm watching them at the same time as reading this and wow they added SO much more stuff。 Part of me is aggravated by that but then part of me is like the actual book doesn't have a lot of plot points? Like again, it's so short and basic。 This sounds like a whole lot of criticism lol now that I'm rereading my review。 But let me say this: It was a cute and unique story。 Was it fantastic? no。 But I did enjoy reading it and as much as I tried to separate my feelings as a 24 year old vs 6 year old, this book can't help but have a whole lot of nostalgia attached to it。 Also it's so nice to read a story about a good moral character (aka Bilbo)。 He was a great main character。 。。。more

I read this out loud with (mostly) Fern and Angelo。 When we started in early June, Jocelyn (who had already read it some years ago) read the first twenty or so pages with us before she left for her work-study in Chicago。 When she got home she said to us with near-disgust, "You guys are still reading The Hobbit?" Sam joined us a few times for the read-a-thon, too, but was gone for most of it, too, either at a camp or somewhere else because he, too, had already read it and was impatient with the whole "reading aloud" experience。 He opted to read it by himself and finished a long time ago。 Anyway, Fern, Angie and I finished yesterday and whew, it was a long haul。 A。 Long。 Haul。 It's a fine book, but reading it out loud? Yeah, a long haul。 Reading Moby Dick aloud was somehow easier than this。 That said, The Hobbit is charming and adorable and funny and absurd and outdoorsy in a non-outdoorsy way。 And listening to Fern and Angelo read was pleasant and relaxing for me。 But I'm glad we're done。 。。。more

I grew up with The Hobbit, and my first exposure to it came in the Spring of 1991 when my 3rd grade teacher read it to our class。 I've read it numerous times, and have always found it to be a charming and exciting adventure, sometimes wry, and always clever。Tolkien's accomplishment, in this and in Lord of the Rings, is in his ability to make the details of his world directly serve his story and create context for his characters。 The Hobbit is not so much a spring but a double time through advent I grew up with The Hobbit, and my first exposure to it came in the Spring of 1991 when my 3rd grade teacher read it to our class。 I've read it numerous times, and have always found it to be a charming and exciting adventure, sometimes wry, and always clever。Tolkien's accomplishment, in this and in Lord of the Rings, is in his ability to make the details of his world directly serve his story and create context for his characters。 The Hobbit is not so much a spring but a double time through adventure and through a world that would later reveal itself (though initially unintentionally) to be much larger than even the book itself hints at。Pieces of the story that are, any critic would call, happy accidents or abrupt solutions (to say nothing of Tolkien's idea of the benevolent catastrophe) such as Gandalf's departure to face The Necromancer deep in the heart of Mirkwood, and the arrival of Bard the Bowman remain some of my favorite moments in the story, as their vagaries inspire the imagination in the same way a horror movie monster with no clear origin does。It is that sparking of imagination, as well as the ever increasingly perilous adventures of Bilbo and the Dwarves that has brought me back to this book time and again。 。。。more

Another book my school forced me to read。 (: it’s not bad just not the kind of literature I enjoy。 If you like fantasy you should enjoy it。 For me it was too repetitive and seemed to drag out forever。 They walked, they fought, they walked, they fought, etc。 After a few chapters of it I was well and truly bored。

I really did enjoy this book, but I did have to take my time with it because it was difficult to read in big chunks。 It got quickly repetitive encountering challenges and then resting for a month in some welcoming elf house in the middle of nowhere。 Also most of said challenges were brushed over and almost always heavily relied on the powers of Bilbo’s ring, like please give the poor hobbit a break。 Gandalf is like the only somewhat intriguing character and he was off on his own quest for half t I really did enjoy this book, but I did have to take my time with it because it was difficult to read in big chunks。 It got quickly repetitive encountering challenges and then resting for a month in some welcoming elf house in the middle of nowhere。 Also most of said challenges were brushed over and almost always heavily relied on the powers of Bilbo’s ring, like please give the poor hobbit a break。 Gandalf is like the only somewhat intriguing character and he was off on his own quest for half the book。 But this was written in what like the 1930s?? I have always loved LOTR since I was young but I've never been a reader, finally I've finished this book\audiobook, so my rating might be based of the achievement to myself over quality, because I dont have a rounded opinion。I loved it however, more detail into an incredible world, the audiobook by Phil Dragash had music, background sounds and fully engrossed me for every word, And personally I hope it starts a passion I've always longed for I have always loved LOTR since I was young but I've never been a reader, finally I've finished this book\audiobook, so my rating might be based of the achievement to myself over quality, because I dont have a rounded opinion。I loved it however, more detail into an incredible world, the audiobook by Phil Dragash had music, background sounds and fully engrossed me for every word, And personally I hope it starts a passion I've always longed for 。。。more
