There are certain books that one can appreciate and benefit from regardless of whether they were written three hundred or one thousand years ago。 Reading such a book, you feel that you are speaking with a kindred spirit or learning wisdom that is universal to the human condition。 The Secret of the Rosary on the other hand, seemed to be a book so riddled with superstition, prejudice and brutal acceptance of its status quo that I am surprised (in optimistic vein) that it is still so widely read in There are certain books that one can appreciate and benefit from regardless of whether they were written three hundred or one thousand years ago。 Reading such a book, you feel that you are speaking with a kindred spirit or learning wisdom that is universal to the human condition。 The Secret of the Rosary on the other hand, seemed to be a book so riddled with superstition, prejudice and brutal acceptance of its status quo that I am surprised (in optimistic vein) that it is still so widely read in the modern age。 For example, we are told about how men had pious recourse to the Rosary before they rode off and victoriously slaughtered great numbers of 'heretics' in the bloody crusade against the Albigensians。If I had not already discovered the value of the Rosary, I fear this book would have put me off。 At its worst the book is in danger of unwittingly reinforcing the position that it argues against, namely that the Rosary is for the foolish and superstitious。 I had read this book in hope that it would offer further help for reaching higher levels of contemplative prayer via the Rosary。 It did not help on that score。 For that, I found Theresa of Avila's The Way of Perfection much more helpful。 She doesn't mention the Rosary specifically, but her discussion of how vocal prayer and meditation are invaluable starting points to contemplation is applicable to the Rosary。Where de Montofort's book was helpful was in its emphasis on maintaining a regular practice of the prayer and giving it one's full attention rather than doing it sporadically or half heartedly。 In spite of my criticisms, it succeeded in conveying something of the beauty and importance of the prayer and of the value of commitment to it, which seems to have been the primary aim of the author。 。。。more

It's good but can be a but repetitive。 There are other great books written on the rosary that are not so repetitive such as "Praying The Rosary Like Never Before"。 And sometimes the person who did the reading for the audiobook makes it sound extra flat and mind numbingly endless too! My advice is to simply do the rosary while paying attention to what you are saying the best you can, to incorporate meditation on the mysteries and see what happens and how you think and feel during and after。 It's It's good but can be a but repetitive。 There are other great books written on the rosary that are not so repetitive such as "Praying The Rosary Like Never Before"。 And sometimes the person who did the reading for the audiobook makes it sound extra flat and mind numbingly endless too! Didn’t finish, so I didn’t rate it。 It’s not my intention to bash Catholicism here。 (Though upon reading this, you may disagree。)I’m simply documenting my thoughts for myself and a few friends that I know are curious about my Christian journey。 Apologies to those I offend。 For a while, I was researching Catholicism vs。 other sects of Christianity。 I was attracted to the orderliness, (I guess that’s the word I want), and the mystery of the rosary and the Eucharist。 I appreciate that the Catholic Didn’t finish, so I didn’t rate it。 It’s not my intention to bash Catholicism here。 (Though upon reading this, you may disagree。)I’m simply documenting my thoughts for myself and a few friends that I know are curious about my Christian journey。 Apologies to those I offend。 For a while, I was researching Catholicism vs。 other sects of Christianity。 I was attracted to the orderliness, (I guess that’s the word I want), and the mystery of the rosary and the Eucharist。 I appreciate that the Catholic Church has consistently held firm to the parts of the Bible that enrage so many- Paul’s writings are the biggest。The rosary being the New Testament on a string is brilliant- especially the Joyful and Sorrowful mysteries。 I like contemplating the wonder of how God set all of this in motion and being reminded of the amazing things that happened in Jesus’ life。 Their checklist for salvation is comforting- doing certain things to please God and being able to pray to release loved ones from purgatory after death。 It also feels special and privileged to have different novenas to saints and specific prayers to recite。 The ease of reading right off a page or recall a prayer from memory has an appeal。 But the more in depth I read the Bible, the less likely it all seems to be true…Especially the information about the Virgin Mary that shows up at the end of the Glorious mysteries。 Devotion to Mary arrives late in church history and has no evidence in the Bible or with the early church fathers。 Yes, the words to the Hail Mary prayer appear in Luke 1:26-56。 But it isn’t convincing that these words were meant to be prayed to Mary。 Why didn’t her sinless state and assumption show up in the New Testament? Why didn’t Jesus say, “come to me through my mother?” He said, “no one comes to the father but through me”。 One the cross he spoke to his favorite disciple and said, “this is your mother”。 But was Jesus talking to all of the church members to come? There’s also Matthew 12:46-50 to contend with。 Jesus didn’t give his mother special treatment during that encounter。 Matthew 12:46-50 also mentions Jesus’ brothers…which the Catholic Church maintains were his cousins, that the translation is wrong, and that Mary and Joseph maintained a celibate marriage。 It doesn’t make sense…there are historic documents outside of the New Testament writings that call James the brother of Jesus。 Matthew 1:18-25 is problematic。 Even in the Douay-Rheims translation, verse 25 says: “And he knew her not till she brought forth her firstborn son…” I’ve had Catholics explain it to me that there’s another verse somewhere in the Bible that says a woman was a virgin until her death。 The until doesn’t mean that anything came after because that woman died。 That makes sense…but Mary didn’t die。 I had been praying the rosary for about a year and have put it aside。 Devotion to Mary seems like taking my eyes off of God, even though the Catholic arguments “make sense”。 They’re just not biblical。 Deciding to believe the doctrine surrounding her comes down to whether or not one can believe that God has been giving special revelation to the succession of popes and devoted Catholic saints。 Do we believe that Mary has been visiting people for the past 1000+ years? Do we believe that special revelation given by her to Catholic saints carries the same weight as the NT?On the other hand, it is so comforting to think about have a heavenly mother to go with the father。 That motherly comfort is warming to me in a way that love from a father is missing。 It is a beautiful thought, bringing roses to honor the woman who gave birth to our savior。 That doing so would please Jesus。 But…am I worshipping her when I do this? I think I am。 Maybe other people can pray to her every day and leave roses at her feet and still worship God and give Jesus his proper respect and place。 That’s not me。 Here is prayer of petition to be said before the Joyful mysteries during a 54 Day Rosary Novena:“Hail, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, my Mother Mary, hail!At thy feet I humbly kneel to offer thee a Crown of Roses, snow white buds to remind thee of thy joys, each bud recalling to thee a holy mystery, each 10 bound together with my petition for a particular grace。O Holy Queen, dispenser of God’s graces, and Mother of all who invoke thee, thou canst not look upon my gift and fail to see its binding。As thou receivest my gift, so wilt thou receive my petition; from thy bounty thou wilt give me the favor I so earnestly and trustingly seek。 I despair of nothing that I ask of thee。Show thyself my Mother!”The words are beautiful and respectful。 It calls her the dispenser of God’s graces, but when I’ve prayed my 54 day novenas, I felt like I was asking her for what I wanted and not God。 That I was thanking her and giving her credit for my blessings。 That’s at the thanksgiving part- “As thou receivest my gift, so wilt thou receive my thanksgiving; from thy bounty thou hast given me the favor I so earnestly and trustingly sought。 I despaired not of what I asked of thee, and thou hast truly shown thyself my Mother!”The Our Father and Glory Be prayers just don’t cut it for me to give God his glory。 One each for every 10 Hail Mary。 It feels like a footnote。 Again, this is all not meant to bash Catholicism。 I think it does a lot well, but some things just aren’t true。 I apologize again if reading this offends。 。。。more

One of, if not THE most important books written for the human soul! If ever there had been doubt over the importance & efficacy of the Most Holy Rosary - this book banishes every hesitation or second thought。 Written simply and in the most unwavering terms, Monfort dissects & analyses every glorious word of the Rosary like a scientist in love; presenting the reader with astounding truths, including how our humble earthly recitations of the Rosary resound into eternity。

This book is a little treasure。 It gives many examples of the power of the rosary。 Every seminarian should be given this book to read。 Something that is badly needed in the new order church today。

How do you rate an essential writing of the saints? An edifying testimonial to the power of the rosary, as well as heaven's mandate to us to pray it faithfully and preferentially。 As someone who prays the rosary daily, this is a bolstering reminder of Our Lord and Lady's love for us。Around the middle of the book, there are a slough of examples of specific feats/miracles/conversions attributed to the rosary, which (in my estimation) are unnecessary, and make for somewhat tedious reading。 If a read How do you rate an essential writing of the saints? An edifying testimonial to the power of the rosary, as well as heaven's mandate to us to pray it faithfully and preferentially。 As someone who prays the rosary daily, this is a bolstering reminder of Our Lord and Lady's love for us。Around the middle of the book, there are a slough of examples of specific feats/miracles/conversions attributed to the rosary, which (in my estimation) are unnecessary, and make for somewhat tedious reading。 If a reader is not persuaded of the importance of the rosary, the way these examples are written will not help, and those who already believe do not require them。 This is my only reservation in terms of personal "entertainment/enjoyment"。 The appendices offer a number of extremely helpful methods to use in praying and meditating on the rosary。 These have enriched my contemplative prayer and are most useful。 I recommend this book for these alone! 。。。more

I was genuinely surprised at how interesting I found this little book。 As a Christian tentatively researching the various Churches I found it very informative。 Certainly, the rosary and the Marian devotion of the Catholics (and the Russian Orthodox) are among the most controversial questions when it comes to Christian teachings of different denominations and this book explains the Catholic point of view extremely well, including short stories to illustrate the belief in the power of Mary and the I was genuinely surprised at how interesting I found this little book。 As a Christian tentatively researching the various Churches I found it very informative。 Certainly, the rosary and the Marian devotion of the Catholics (and the Russian Orthodox) are among the most controversial questions when it comes to Christian teachings of different denominations and this book explains the Catholic point of view extremely well, including short stories to illustrate the belief in the power of Mary and the prayer of the rosary (some of those stories are inspiring, some actually sound ridiculous, but I enjoyed them still, much as I would enjoy any storybook)。 I also found it interesting from the historical point of view, especially the fervent advocacy of indulgences, which, from what I understand, have been altered and are no longer propagated in the same way as they once were。 Definitely a good study book for anyone interested in the subject, whether or not you are a Catholic。 。。。more
