Summary

A groundbreaking approach to transforming traumatic legacies passed down in families over generations, by an acclaimed expert in the field

Depression。 Anxiety。 Chronic Pain。 Phobias。 Obsessive thoughts。 The evidence is compelling: the roots of these difficulties may not reside in our immediate life experience or in chemical imbalances in our brains—but in the lives of our parents, grandparents, and even great-grandparents。 The latest scientific research, now making headlines, supports what many have long intuited—that traumatic experience can be passed down through generations。 It Didn’t Start with You builds on the work of leading experts in post-traumatic stress, including Mount Sinai School of Medicine neuroscientist Rachel Yehuda and psychiatrist Bessel van der Kolk, author of The Body Keeps the Score。 Even if the person who suffered the original trauma has died, or the story has been forgotten or silenced, memory and feelings can live on。 These emotional legacies are often hidden, encoded in everything from gene expression to everyday language, and they play a far greater role in our emotional and physical health than has ever before been understood。

As a pioneer in the field of inherited family trauma, Mark Wolynn has worked with individuals and groups on a therapeutic level for over twenty years。 It Didn’t Start with You offers a pragmatic and prescriptive guide to his method, the Core Language Approach。 Diagnostic self-inventories provide a way to uncover the fears and anxieties conveyed through everyday words, behaviors, and physical symptoms。 Techniques for developing a genogram or extended family tree create a map of experiences going back through the generations。 And visualization, active imagination, and direct dialogue create pathways to reconnection, integration, and reclaiming life and health。 It Didn’t Start With You is a transformative approach to resolving longstanding difficulties that in many cases, traditional therapy, drugs, or other interventions have not had the capacity to touch。

Great book - definitely benefited from more than half of what was explored and highlighted bits that I want to return to in the future。 Anyone can benefit from this book in one way or another。 One gripe: a lot of what was said by the author seemed to be regurgitated information that he cited from elsewhere。

Incredible。 The reader will reap the most benefit if they commit to whole heartedly completing the written assignments。 If something doesn’t quite resonate with you, simply accept it as another perspective。 As a physician, I appreciated the attention to detail and science/research presented at the beginning, especially how digestible it was written。 I definitely plan to read and rework this book again in the future as I continue to heal。

This is I would say one of my favorite books about healing。 It made me learn more about my family history as a part of learning about myself and trying to embrace that this is something ingrained in me but I can also choose to let them go out of my life after acknowledging that it exists。

A deeply fascinating book on the ways in which we carry forward stories and trauma far beyond our own life experiences。 This is an important book for deepening healing and getting more towards the root of what it means to release, integrate, and heal and a much more profound level。

Read about the first 100 pages。 It was really interesting to hear more about what is passed down in our dna than just our physical attributes or personalities。 Thought provoking, but didn’t feel the need to finish and had to return to the library。

I call this my heteronormative psychology book。 There's a lot I really didn't like a lot about it - for example, the underlying premise that the world is about a man and a woman getting married and making babies - but there was also interesting stuff in here。 I call this my heteronormative psychology book。 There's a lot I really didn't like a lot about it - for example, the underlying premise that the world is about a man and a woman getting married and making babies - but there was also interesting stuff in here。 。。。more

Very useful to psychodynamic therapy oriented clinicians。 This book might aggravate readers whose emotions are still too raw toward parents, (understandably so) or counselors who rely on cognitive behavioral therapy that often does not attend to the unconscious。 I can say that most of the authors ideas are supported with evidence from my own work with clients。 One thing that I would have loved to see is more evidence-based research。 Otherwise the exercises are great。

I enjoyed the start of this book very much, great Scientific research followed by great interpretation, but I feel like after that it got very anecdotal, maybe abit far fetched and too many written exercises, but overall I'd still recommend it, I do believe in the philosophy of this idea and do feel overall it helped me to futher understand my mind as it relates to family trauma, I enjoyed the start of this book very much, great Scientific research followed by great interpretation, but I feel like after that it got very anecdotal, maybe abit far fetched and too many written exercises, but overall I'd still recommend it, I do believe in the philosophy of this idea and do feel overall it helped me to futher understand my mind as it relates to family trauma, 。。。more

As scared and unwilling as I was at the beginning, facing the truths of what happened to my family has helped me to become a stronger, more confident and compassionate person。 This book is truly healing in so many ways。 Thank you! 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I really did enjoy reading this even though I felt like it could have been much better。 I wish that the science from the first section could have carried over more into the rest of the book。 I also think this could be a very helpful read for anyone trying to understand how the trauma of past generations has manifested in them…but I feel like many of the solutions the author suggests do not consider abuse and the affects of abuse and how to deal with an abuser。 I would have given this 2。5 if I co I really did enjoy reading this even though I felt like it could have been much better。 I wish that the science from the first section could have carried over more into the rest of the book。 I also think this could be a very helpful read for anyone trying to understand how the trauma of past generations has manifested in them…but I feel like many of the solutions the author suggests do not consider abuse and the affects of abuse and how to deal with an abuser。 I would have given this 2。5 if I could。 Still worth reading though。 。。。more

This is a must for therapist & anyone who works holistically with others, also for anyone to read & untangle their own ancestry history to shed layers of struggle or feelings which they no longer have to carry。 I found this book fascinating, having worked in family constellation work with others, extremely well written & explained。

I couldn't finish this book。 Though there was some interesting information about stress hormones and other measurable biological markers of inherited trauma, there was way too much talk about needing to have good feelings when you think about your parents and needing to put yourselves in their shoes and think about where their bullshit comes from。 No thanks。 I spent my entire childhood empathizing with them to the point I didn't have a sense of self for years after I moved out。 I don't need to f I couldn't finish this book。 Though there was some interesting information about stress hormones and other measurable biological markers of inherited trauma, there was way too much talk about needing to have good feelings when you think about your parents and needing to put yourselves in their shoes and think about where their bullshit comes from。 No thanks。 I spent my entire childhood empathizing with them to the point I didn't have a sense of self for years after I moved out。 I don't need to feel warm fuzzies when I think about them to be ok, and neither do you。 I'm sure this book has helped many but for those who endured abuse at the hands of their parents, we don't need to hear that our bad feelings towards them are a flaw or that we need to understand why they abused us。 I do have a lot of compassion for my parents, they both had tough childhoods and went through horrific experiences。 I know they couldn't do better than they did。 I still don't want to talk to them or ever see them again。 That doesn't mean I'm broken or wrong。 They are not safe people to be around, and I worry very much about this book telling you to run back to your abusers and attempt time over time to connect with them。 。。。more

Great book that points out, through many examples, the unconscious ties that we have through our DNA to our ancestors/family from various levels of trauma。 This book is one that every person should read as it will help them become more at peace and successful in their life's endeavors。 Great book that points out, through many examples, the unconscious ties that we have through our DNA to our ancestors/family from various levels of trauma。 This book is one that every person should read as it will help them become more at peace and successful in their life's endeavors。 。。。more

The first portion of this book was a quick overview of epigenetics and how the effects of life experience can have on physiology and psychology。 For me, this information wasn't new and was a much more abridged version of work I've previously read from Sapolsky ("Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers" and "Behave")。 The primary difference being that Sapolsky has actual scientific training, credentials, and experience whereas, as far as I can tell, Wolynn's primary training is in English, not applicable sci The first portion of this book was a quick overview of epigenetics and how the effects of life experience can have on physiology and psychology。 For me, this information wasn't new and was a much more abridged version of work I've previously read from Sapolsky ("Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers" and "Behave")。 The primary difference being that Sapolsky has actual scientific training, credentials, and experience whereas, as far as I can tell, Wolynn's primary training is in English, not applicable science-based fields。After the book's first part, it veers wildly into la-la land with anecdote after anecdote with very little supporting science explanations for how Wolynn's alleged path actually works。 Granted, psychology can be a bit personal。 I'm sure there are some easily-suggestible people for whom this process may work。 However, the book boils everything down to a family history path that can be overcome with forgiveness。 The book doesn't consider past trauma from peers, past trauma from abuse and physical harm。 For some of these things, I suspect the proposed path will not help and could quite possibly cause more harm。This is a book that appears to be ineffective, at best, and potentially harmful at worst。 。。。more

This book is a hard pass for me。 Having my degree in psychology, I found this book hard to read。 Although I appreciate the sentiment, family trauma and cycles is important to recognize。 I did not appreciate the comments made with NO support or science to back。 You can read this book but be weary that none of the finding have been credited and are widely disproven as of today。

I understand that one way to interpret this book is that you can heal your relationship with even an abusive & unrepentant parent by doing a visualization by yourself to find peace, but there are deeper assumptions in this work about the meaning and importance of family that trouble me。 Also, not sure I buy into essentially spiritual epigenetics。 Go read about cognitive behavioral therapy instead。

Did not finish。 Did not realize this is sort of an opinion book。 Some science—yes— but moves into one man’s opinion (Without science)
