Summary

A Wall Street Journal bestseller。

The powerful bond between humans and dogs is one that’s uniquely cherished。 Loyal, obedient, and affectionate, they are truly “man’s best friend。” But do dogs love us the way we love them? Emory University neuroscientist Gregory Berns had spent decades using MRI imaging technology to study how the human brain works, but a different question still nagged at him: What is my dog thinking?

After his family adopted Callie, a shy, skinny terrier mix, Berns decided that there was only one way to answer that question—use an MRI machine to scan the dog’s brain。 His colleagues dismissed the idea。 Everyone knew that dogs needed to be restrained or sedated for MRI scans。 But if the military could train dogs to operate calmly in some of the most challenging environments, surely there must be a way to train dogs to sit in an MRI scanner。

With this radical conviction, Berns and his dog would embark on a remarkable journey and be the first to glimpse the inner workings of the canine brain。 Painstakingly, the two worked together to overcome the many technical, legal, and behavioral hurdles。 Berns’s research offers surprising results on how dogs empathize with human emotions, how they love us, and why dogs and humans share one of the most remarkable friendships in the animal kingdom。

How Dogs Love Us answers the age-old question of dog lovers everywhere and offers profound new evidence that dogs should be treated as we would treat our best human friends: with love, respect, and appreciation for their social and emotional intelligence。

Labai patiko。 Buvo labai įdomu paskaityti kaip neuromokslininkai tiria šunis。 Daug sužinojau apie MRT aparato veikimą。 Labai lengvai susiskaitė ir negalėjau padėti knygos kol nebaigiau skaityti

Tema labai įdomi, bet parašyta penktokams。

Very interesting how they came up with the items to train the dogs。 I would have liked to know more of the results。 Parts of the book were quite technical but overall a pretty easy read for the layman

Who we are with dogs is who we are as people。 Every cruelty, embrace, neglect, indulgence, shows us the measure of ourselves when no one is watching。

This was a really cool study on dogs。 I was amazed and enjoyed reading it。

The title was an interesting hook, but I didn't finish it because of language that I couldn't recommend for students。 The title was an interesting hook, but I didn't finish it because of language that I couldn't recommend for students。 。。。more

First; I would prefer to give this book 3。25 or 3。4 stars versus 3 but that is not an option for the site。 The general preface of this book is relatively simple; a neuroscientist who works primarily with MRI driven research for the human brain decides to conduct a series of experiments designed to answer the question of do dogs form personal/loving attachments with their human counterparts out of a desire to connect with them and a dog version of compassion or do dogs simply see their respective First; I would prefer to give this book 3。25 or 3。4 stars versus 3 but that is not an option for the site。 The general preface of this book is relatively simple; a neuroscientist who works primarily with MRI driven research for the human brain decides to conduct a series of experiments designed to answer the question of do dogs form personal/loving attachments with their human counterparts out of a desire to connect with them and a dog version of compassion or do dogs simply see their respective humans as treat dispensers? I can't say that I feel like the author truly answered his own hypothesis but I will put into the universe that I found the entire prospect of even attempting to answer the question on a scientific basis interesting enough to read the book。 For a neuroscientist then I felt like special attention was paid to writing this book in laymen terms。 Being 100% honest, I felt like there were times when it was dumbed down a little too much and I would have enjoyed getting some more of the analytical pieces。 My favorite part of the book was probably the detailed account of training the dogs to go into the MRI scanner and reviewing of the MRI images where the author translated what photographs of slices of dog brain obtained by MRI compared to human brain mapping。 Considering how loud an MRI scanner is and also enclosed then just getting the dogs into the scanner is pretty triumphant。 This book will go over best with those that are truly interested/vested in their pups with a desire to understand them and who also have an interest in nerding out with some data。 。。。more

Įdomūs tyrimai。 Aprašyta suprantamai ir lengvai。 Meilė šuniui suteikia daug motyvacijos atlikti sudėtingus mokslinius tyrimus。 Skaitant knygą, beveik nuolat viena ranka liečiau savo draugę - šunytę Kelę, kurios vardas sutampa su herojės vardu :)

A fascinating book about canine cognition。 I listened to the audio book, and was not crazy about the narrator's voice--purely subjective--which is why I give it 4 stars。 Some of this is very clinical as the types of conditioning and brain functions are explained, so be prepared to learn some science while you read/listen。 I can't wait to see how the project is expanded with additional questions。 A fascinating book about canine cognition。 I listened to the audio book, and was not crazy about the narrator's voice--purely subjective--which is why I give it 4 stars。 Some of this is very clinical as the types of conditioning and brain functions are explained, so be prepared to learn some science while you read/listen。 I can't wait to see how the project is expanded with additional questions。 。。。more

Tikėjausi daugiau iš šios knygos , tikėjausi sužinoti , ką galvoja šunys :) tačiau šioje knygoje buvo daugiau aprašytas pats kelias iki tyrimo ir procesas :)

This is not really a book about how dogs love, it's about how Gregory Berns set up his dog MRI experiments and how he got his daughter to do her homework。 This is not really a book about how dogs love, it's about how Gregory Berns set up his dog MRI experiments and how he got his daughter to do her homework。 。。。more

I am an animal person。。。dog, cat, bird or reptile, I've had them but dogs are special and this book just makes my science mind happy that there are people studying the unique connection we have with dogs。 AwesomeRead this book in one afternoon! 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄 for a scientist un-ironically using the term "lady parts。" If you can learn all of the technical terms for neurological structures, you are grown enough to say vulva。This book had a few interesting conclusions, but a lot of personal and background information that was tough to slog through。 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄 for a scientist un-ironically using the term "lady parts。" If you can learn all of the technical terms for neurological structures, you are grown enough to say vulva。This book had a few interesting conclusions, but a lot of personal and background information that was tough to slog through。 。。。more

Interesting book。。。 it wasn't what I thought it was going to be。 Most of the book covered how he trained his dog to even be used for study。 While groundbreaking, I was hoping for more on the findings and their implications。 The end covered it a little bit, but I don't feel like I learned anything terribly new。 I already know how my dog feels about her pack, and this book backed it up with a bit of science。 I guess I was hoping for more explanation on the why behind the how。 The how makes sense。。 Interesting book。。。 it wasn't what I thought it was going to be。 Most of the book covered how he trained his dog to even be used for study。 While groundbreaking, I was hoping for more on the findings and their implications。 The end covered it a little bit, but I don't feel like I learned anything terribly new。 I already know how my dog feels about her pack, and this book backed it up with a bit of science。 I guess I was hoping for more explanation on the why behind the how。 The how makes sense。。。 but why does my dog love me? Does my dog know I love him?Does my dog love me? This book answers both questions!Sometimes I got bogged down by scientific words and explanations but it answered many things I had wondered about, for instance sometimes I swore my dogs knew what I was thinking, and it turns out he might be more in tune with me than I am with him! Sometimes I sit and look him straight in his eyes and tell him I love him, and he stares at me, like he's listening to me, while watching my eyes very intently, and the Does my dog know I love him?Does my dog love me? This is not really a review but more of a commentary。 I just couldn’t get into this book - it seemed boring。 Maybe it’s because I recently lost my dog or maybe it’s because the book wasn’t at all what I thought。 Either way, I’m moving on from it。 I agree with another review in that I would rather read the scientific paper。

The depictions of the dogs and their behaviors and interactions with the author and his family are heartwarming。 I was disappointed in not finding an answer to the question of how dogs love us。 A different title might be more appropriate。 Maybe just the subtitle alone。

Patiks asmenims, kurie domisi neurologiniais tyrimais。 Knyga sausoka, lengvai galima būtų sutrumpinti į kelių puslapių straipsnį。 Vietomis priverčia susimąstyti ir ilgam išlieka mintyse。

Love it! It's a very interesting book, very well written。 Berns explains thoroughly what his research is about: scanning the brains of fully conscious dogs to map how answers in specific areas of the dogs’ brains are triggered by actions of the owners。 My only complaint is because there are too few explanations of the dog's brain structure and functioning based on the scan results。 It's a book I warmly suggest to everyone who has a dog and who is interested in neuroscience。 Love it! I loved this book but as a Doctor I enjoy research and reading studies。 It is very scientific but is a great argument for the sentience of animals。

。This book was both informative on many levels。 Not only did I gain a deeper understanding of my best friend's thinking , but I also gained an understanding of how MRIs work along with additional medical knowledge。 The author seems to be a very likeable person that one would like to know。 。This book was both informative on many levels。 Not only did I gain a deeper understanding of my best friend's thinking , but I also gained an understanding of how MRIs work along with additional medical knowledge。 The author seems to be a very likeable person that one would like to know。 。。。more
