Summary

Typical Ruth Ware style of murder mystery writing。 It kept my attention overall

This isn’t a genre I typically read, but I am so glad my friend lent me this book so I could branch out! It drew me in from the beginning and I didn’t want to put it down!

Decent beach read but Rowan was just an ok character。 The point of view was hard for me to experience。 All I kept thinking about was how devastated the family must be and we didn't hear about any of that。 Decent beach read but Rowan was just an ok character。 The point of view was hard for me to experience。 All I kept thinking about was how devastated the family must be and we didn't hear about any of that。 。。。more

I finished this book a couple of hours ago and can now calmly (more or less) write my three star review。。 This book had a ton of potential to be super spooky but it really fell flat in that sense。 A smart house and a sleep deprived nanny just don't cut it。 Rather, reading about how dumb the smart house is and reading about how this nanny is freaking terrible, like wow you make terrible judgment calls and aren't fit for this gig whatsoever, isn't my cup of tea either。 The kids were misbehaved and I finished this book a couple of hours ago and can now calmly (more or less) write my three star review。。 This book had a ton of potential to be super spooky but it really fell flat in that sense。 A smart house and a sleep deprived nanny just don't cut it。 Rather, reading about how dumb the smart house is and reading about how this nanny is freaking terrible, like wow you make terrible judgment calls and aren't fit for this gig whatsoever, isn't my cup of tea either。 The kids were misbehaved and annoying, apart from the baby, and didn't really add much to the spookiness。 They were just irritating。 Reading the letters was cool until it got to be plain exhausting and not practical at all。 The ending? With all the twists。。。nope。 It ended too abruptly and it didn't punch me in the gut like oh snap! All in all, it's an okay book。 。。。more

I thought I was done with Ruth Ware after The Woman in Cabin 10-- good plot line, but shrouded in continual, tiresome drinking binges by the main character-- but I'm glad I tried again, this was much better。 I'd put this one on my "don't read after dark" shelf if I had one! Although it suffers from the implausibility that the entire novel is written as a letter (well, 2 letters) to a barrister to plead a case, it is otherwise really well put together。 The novel throughout is brilliantly laden wi I thought I was done with Ruth Ware after The Woman in Cabin 10-- good plot line, but shrouded in continual, tiresome drinking binges by the main character-- but I'm glad I tried again, this was much better。 I'd put this one on my "don't read after dark" shelf if I had one! I had no theories or clues what was going to happen。 I thought up a totally different ending and was completely blindsided by what happened。 Another good book from Ruth!

Books about kids and ghosts usually leave me cold and this one was bordering on irritating for more than half。 It was only towards the end that it picked up and the ending was kind of satisfactory。 Still, it was a disappointment because I really liked her 'The Death of Mrs Westaway'。 Books about kids and ghosts usually leave me cold and this one was bordering on irritating for more than half。 It was only towards the end that it picked up and the ending was kind of satisfactory。 Still, it was a disappointment because I really liked her 'The Death of Mrs Westaway'。 。。。more

This is my second Ruth Ware book and I enjoyed it much more than the first。 While I suspected the final twist at the very end of the book there were a few reveals before that, that I didn’t see coming at all。 She does a brilliant job of setting the scene, there were multiple times I found myself looking over my shoulder because I felt uneasy or uncomfortable。 I really enjoyed this one and look forward to reading more of her books。

SO SO SO GOOD。 I loved the imagery, the mood, the story, the writing。 While some thrillers have small twists and turns, this one had like two HUGE 90 degree angle turns that you seriously cannot see coming。 Recommending to everyone

Well, that didn't take too long to finish。 It surprised me and I was wondering whether it was a horror story most of the time。 But I like horror stories and found it a breeze to read。 Loved the country house setting, the secret-garden feel, history of violence and the unexpected characters。 Some good twists at the end as well。 Enjoyed it well enough to give 4 stars!

An extremely tense book that had me second-guessing myself in many ways!

SO SO GOOD I LOVED IT! I read the entire thing in two days and couldn’t put it down… it had so much suspense and added details at all the right times。 The ending will make your jaw drop。 MASTERPIECE

Started out a little slow, but became intriguing quickly。 The eeriness throughout the book is creepy and I didn’t want to put it down。 The ending was fantastic。 I highly recommend。

Book was hard to get into at first and then it was full force from there。 Completely shocking ending and really enjoyed the little details that really complete the story through out the book。

Many a twist and reveal, some of which dear reader I imagine you'll have figured out while others may provide a thrill as you ken the truth of it or an eye-roll as you spot the malarkey。I was somewhere between frustrated and furious with pretty much every character at some point, but you know how it is。 Sometimes you see someone walking down the street and look away for a moment。 When you look back, they're gone。 And the most plausible answers don't line up - she wasn't in any of the cars parked on the street & you didn't hear any car door slamming, he wasn't on any of the stairs leading up to the doors on that side of the street & didn't have time to have already climbed then and been inside (unless he started sprinting the moment you looked down, which doesn't seem likely)。 Did they spin around and start going the other way, duck down an alley between house, if so why? So, you know, I finished swiftly and had my "ah-hahs" and "oh, pleeeases。"I wound up at three stars and have no idea, reader mine, where you'd land。 And I'm curious。 Will probably try another of Wares books。 So this has that going for it; it left me curious what other stories Ware has to tell。 。。。more
