Summary

My enjoyment of this otherwise pretty good, accurate and accessible book was ruined by the patronising, historically inaccurate and at times colonial tones employed by the author in the passages about the history of mental health。 I'm sure he is aware there were other people living in antiquity other than the romans and the greeks。 There were and are other cultural approaches to medicine and culture, not just western medicine vs superstition。 This is not a history book, so I wasn't expecting tho My enjoyment of this otherwise pretty good, accurate and accessible book was ruined by the patronising, historically inaccurate and at times colonial tones employed by the author in the passages about the history of mental health。 I'm sure he is aware there were other people living in antiquity other than the romans and the greeks。 There were and are other cultural approaches to medicine and culture, not just western medicine vs superstition。 This is not a history book, so I wasn't expecting those things to be explained in detail, but the way they're glossed over almost made be give up on the book altogether。 If you can get over that, the later chapters are pretty good。 And Dean Burnett is a great science communicator。 。。。more

A neat little overview of depression, anxiety and addiction。 Burnett spread himself thinly trying to discuss such huge topics。 Looking forward to his next one to cover even more。

。。。more

I picked up Psycho-Logical a few months back with interest both general and professional。 I think the first thing that I was most pleasantly surprised by was the balanced, sensitive, and accessible way Burnett introduced the book。 The topic being possibly one of the most challenging to manage to avoid controvesy this was probably the least worrisome take you’ll ever read。In terms of level Psycho-Logical is fairly technical especially as Brunett is more of a neuroscientist so there is a wealth of I picked up Psycho-Logical a few months back with interest both general and professional。 I think the first thing that I was most pleasantly surprised by was the balanced, sensitive, and accessible way Burnett introduced the book。 The topic being possibly one of the most challenging to manage to avoid controvesy this was probably the least worrisome take you’ll ever read。In terms of level Psycho-Logical is fairly technical especially as Brunett is more of a neuroscientist so there is a wealth of material on brain science。 That said its a straightforward read that I wouldn’t image being too dense for anyone interested in picking it up。As a behavioural professional I found the book really helpful for fleshing out an area of less proficency of mine and is highly recommended for anyone in a similar boat。Probably my only beef, and a totally unfair one – is that I simply wish the book could have continued and covered even more areas of mental health。 Given the breath of the topic the book fairly covers the most common mental disorders (depression, anxiety etc, and addiction) but I would jump at the chance to read more in the same vein on other challenges/vulnerabilities。 。。。more

An interesting book but I think it is skewed away from societal issues and towards drugs as cures and the the way the brain works。 The whole book is interesting but does need intelligent scepticism and not to be take without thought。 I have always felt that the trope that people with a mental health issue know more about it than anyone else bar none is part of the anti-expert cult。 They may know a great deal but this has to be judged in the same way you would judge an expert。

This is a likeable, kind and thoughtful book, rather like listening to Dean Burnett chat。 It's refreshingly free from references to things done to rats (Pavlov's dogs pop up a few times) and for those with a poor tolerance for uncertainty probably exasperatingly undogmatic。 That said, a few times the chattiness leads to some casual statements that I suspect are inaccurate。。。 whilst not much mattering in this context。 For example, in explaining something about the impact of growing up with addict This is a likeable, kind and thoughtful book, rather like listening to Dean Burnett chat。 It's refreshingly free from references to things done to rats (Pavlov's dogs pop up a few times) and for those with a poor tolerance for uncertainty probably exasperatingly undogmatic。 That said, a few times the chattiness leads to some casual statements that I suspect are inaccurate。。。 whilst not much mattering in this context。 For example, in explaining something about the impact of growing up with addicted parents he says that those who grow up in very religious households 'almost invariably' believe the teachings of that religion。 Twice he writes about the relevance of context with one thing being appropriate to laugh out loud at, and a eulogy not。 My own feeling is that I would hope an account of someone delivered formally as a speech after their death *would* raise a laugh at one or two points, and don't care for the ones that avoid humour。。。。 but I am mindful that this book was written in the immediate aftermath of Burnett's father's untimely and legitimately angry making death from Covid19 along with all the complications that the pandemic made for mourning。He selects three specific areas of mental ill health to examine: depression, anxiety and addiction, and makes a good case (numbers) for his choice。 He writes as a neuroscientist rather than a clinician or as someone with first person experience。。。 although he says he has been affected by mental health issues in those around him, something which I felt should either have been left out or expanded upon。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Ik denk dat dit boek voor echte mentale gezondheidsleken best een goed begin kan zijn en dat het wat dat betreft zijn belofte (toegankelijke uitleg geven over geestelijke gezondheidsproblemen) ook wel waarmaakt。 Maar het duurt daardoor érg lang voor Burnett tot zijn punt komt。 Bovendien gebruikt hij te pas en te onpas analogieën。 Af en toe zit er een toevalstreffer bij, maar het was wat mij betreft net iets te veel。

If you are looking for clarity, information or even some hopeful messages around mental health issues, this probably isn’t the book for you。 There are few hard facts in this book and very little in-depth science。 A variety of descriptions and explanations are offered for mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety or addiction, but there are few conclusions, and most sections end up saying it’s all very complicated/experts disagree about this/nobody really knows。

While reading this I felt like I was in a room full of mirrors。 The first 100 pages could’ve been winnowed down to at least a quarter。 The rest of the book was more overly long chapters on just 3 disorders: depression, anxiety, and addiction。 Perhaps it’s me, and I’ve just read too much on this topic。

This was a really interesting and informative book。 It made information on the brain accessible without being condescending。 I particularly like to know how things work, especially myself, so this book was really good for getting more insight into where my thoughts and feeling come from, and how I can work on sorting them out on occasion。
