Summary

Crest is not excited to be on their Journey: the monthlong sojourn on land all teen merfolk must undergo。 The rules are simple: Help a human within one moon cycle and return to Pacifica to become an Elder--or fail and remain stuck on land forever。 Crest is eager to get their Journey over and done with: after all, humans are disgusting。 They've pollluted the planet so much that there's a floating island of trash that's literally the size of a country。

In Los Angeles with a human body and a new name, Crest meets Sean, a human lifeguard whose boyfriend has recently dumped him。 Crest agrees to help Sean make his ex jealous and win him back。 But as the two spend more time together and Crest's pespective on humans begins to change, they'll soon be torn between two worlds。 And fake dating just might lead to real feelings。。。

This instant New York Times bestselling novel from Jason June dives into the many definitions of the world home and shows how love can help us find the truest versions of ourselves。

Hoo boy。 That was a lot there by the end。 Um。 I don't know if I can fully stand by this rating because the book felt deeply frustrating at times for most of its final stretch。 Count it as a 3。5 stars I guess。 I don't know, while I feel like the tragic(ish) ending works for what was set up, I do wish there had been at least some questioning of the status quo that caused this ending in the first place, especially since Sean already brought it up earlier。 But nah。 It settles for an open ended epilo Hoo boy。 That was a lot there by the end。 Um。 I don't know if I can fully stand by this rating because the book felt deeply frustrating at times for most of its final stretch。 Count it as a 3。5 stars I guess。 I don't know, while I feel like the tragic(ish) ending works for what was set up, I do wish there had been at least some questioning of the status quo that caused this ending in the first place, especially since Sean already brought it up earlier。 But nah。 It settles for an open ended epilogue instead。 It bothers me。 。。。more

✨3。5 stars ✨The miscommunication trope is just not it :,) It was a really sweet queer book, but to me read similar to The Falling in Love Montage and it was bittersweet。

DNF'd this one after about 85 pages because。。。。oof。 I know this is marked as YA but it's REALLY YA。 After DNFing both of Jason June's novels I've decided their writing isn't for me, and that's okay。 :) The writing comes across as really juvenile which makes sense for being from the pov of teenagers, but still。I'm glad they're writing queer novels that are getting the reception they deserve。 :) DNF'd this one after about 85 pages because。。。。oof。 I know this is marked as YA but it's REALLY YA。 After DNFing both of Jason June's novels I've decided their writing isn't for me, and that's okay。 :) The writing comes across as really juvenile which makes sense for being from the pov of teenagers, but still。I'm glad they're writing queer novels that are getting the reception they deserve。 :) 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I really wanted to like this book。 The concept was just so fun。 However, I really struggled to understand the demographic that this book is for。 The ages of the characters (16) and the references they make are very young, (the kind of thing my middle school students would love to read) but the sheer amount of sex jokes and boners in this book makes me incredibly uncomfortable。 Like literally every single page is making a sex joke。 Everything is still very fade-to-black and innuendo, but I can’t I really wanted to like this book。 The concept was just so fun。 However, I really struggled to understand the demographic that this book is for。 The ages of the characters (16) and the references they make are very young, (the kind of thing my middle school students would love to read) but the sheer amount of sex jokes and boners in this book makes me incredibly uncomfortable。 Like literally every single page is making a sex joke。 Everything is still very fade-to-black and innuendo, but I can’t help but feel like it IS NOT appropriate for the age group it’s marketed to。 I’m all for sex positivity, but this is just over the top。 At some point I felt like I was only reading it because it was like a car crash I couldn’t look away from。 。。。more

This was a delightful queer romcom book! Crest's adventure on land, exploring their human body, falling in love and more is amazing。 I really enjoyed watching Sean and Crest grow and change and learn over the course of the story。 I highly recommend if you think you'd enjoy a gay boy and a non-binary merperson love story。 This was a delightful queer romcom book! The non-binary rep alone makes this a 5 star read, but add in the plot, the romance, the friendships and the take home message。。。 it's just incredible。 As a non-binary person I was overwhelmed by the amazing rep in this book。 Ross' pronouns were discussed and then immediately accepted and from then on the other characters used the right pronouns and gender neutral language。 It honestly warms my heart so much。 I wish books like this were around when I was a teenager。 I really cannot describe how The non-binary rep alone makes this a 5 star read, but add in the plot, the romance, the friendships and the take home message。。。 it's just incredible。 As a non-binary person I was overwhelmed by the amazing rep in this book。 Ross' pronouns were discussed and then immediately accepted and from then on the other characters used the right pronouns and gender neutral language。 It honestly warms my heart so much。 I wish books like this were around when I was a teenager。 I really cannot describe how amazing it is to have this representation and it be so accepted。 Now fake-dating is my all time favourite trope and it was done so well in this book。 There is a clear outline of why the fake was needed, there was TALK OF CONSENT ON ALL ASPECTS, there was cute dates and developing feelings that felt really natural, and once feelings were had they immediately talked to each other about what was happening!!!!!!!!! Fantastic!! I also really loved the casual fat rep that was treated as an attractive quality。 Sean wasn't self-conscious of his size, he felt powerful and wanted, and his size was a huge plus in his relationships。 It was so great to see。 I adore Sean as a character, what an honest gem of a human being, and Ross was so sassy and full of justice。 They're relationship was so sweet and I adore how this ended, it just made it all the more believable。 Cannot recommend this book enough, it's fantastic。 。。。more

2。5*Ykw? I feel like every YA story I read is the same these days。 As much as I live for queer joy and seeing queer people being happy in love, I also don't want to read the exact same thing over and over again。 There's only so much one can do with fake dating。Also, my Nick-and-Charlie obsessed brain will not allow me to root for any other couple (Tara-Darcy, Elle-Tao, David-Patrick, Alex-Henry, Ben-Nathan, Dev-Charlie, Noah-Devin, the only exceptions)。 What is this 🙂 2。5*Ykw? The premise of this book had me so excited, but honestly I was pretty disappointed。 I think I’m perhaps too asexual for this one - and based on my reading history, I’ve learned I’m totally down for sex and physical attraction as long as there is actual emotional build up as well。 I didn’t get that here at all。 (Also I’m a sucker for happy endings and though people could argue me here, I don’t consider this a happy ending at all。) If like me, you are really interested in the concept of this book, The premise of this book had me so excited, but honestly I was pretty disappointed。 I think I’m perhaps too asexual for this one - and based on my reading history, I’ve learned I’m totally down for sex and physical attraction as long as there is actual emotional build up as well。 I didn’t get that here at all。 (Also I’m a sucker for happy endings and though people could argue me here, I don’t consider this a happy ending at all。) If like me, you are really interested in the concept of this book, may I point you in the direction of “In Deeper Waters” by F。T。 Lukens - you get merpeople, a relationship not built on lust alone, and an actual happy ending! This is such a similar read to Becky Albertalli's & Adam Silvera's 'What If It's Us' series: it taste good, you have a fun time with it, and you ultimately look back on your time with it fondly。 I tend to re-read most of my books pretty often, but this is one that I don't see myself jumping back into in a while, if I ever do。 Regardless, I found 'Out of the Blue' to be an irresistibly charming, refreshing (heh), at times surprising, and an important step forward when it comes to representation a This is such a similar read to Becky Albertalli's & Adam Silvera's 'What If It's Us' series: it taste good, you have a fun time with it, and you ultimately look back on your time with it fondly。 I tend to re-read most of my books pretty often, but this is one that I don't see myself jumping back into in a while, if I ever do。 Regardless, I found 'Out of the Blue' to be an irresistibly charming, refreshing (heh), at times surprising, and an important step forward when it comes to representation and diversity in YA fiction。 That alone makes me a little biased, to be completely honest: this is the kind of novel I would have loved to have, back when I was younger。 Queer teens learning about (queer) love, and of the importance of loving yourself before jumping head-first into a romantic relationship IS a valuable lesson。 Ergo, this was a deeply gratifying experience, in the end。 To sum up: this is an awesome, highly-recommended YA fiction novel, if you're into them!P。S。 While I can certainly appreciate the message, the most incurably romantic and juvenile part of me briefly considered giving the book a two-star rating, over the ending。 It was good, but boy does the lesson lose part of its charm, once you've already learned/lived it。 。。。more

While I enjoyed some aspects of this book, the narrative seemed to focus more on the aspects I didn’t enjoy, namely Dominic。 So the story is split into the POVs of our two main characters and to be honest I found the human one, Sean, to be insufferable。 He was seriously not a good person and was both selfish and manipulative to both Cress and everyone around him。 He spends the whole book trying to win back his terrible ex while ignoring the feelings of both Cress and his Exs current boyfriend。 I While I enjoyed some aspects of this book, the narrative seemed to focus more on the aspects I didn’t enjoy, namely Dominic。 So the story is split into the POVs of our two main characters and to be honest I found the human one, Sean, to be insufferable。 He was seriously not a good person and was both selfish and manipulative to both Cress and everyone around him。 He spends the whole book trying to win back his terrible ex while ignoring the feelings of both Cress and his Exs current boyfriend。 I loved the Lore of the Mer and honestly wish the story was more about Cress’s journey of self discovery and the mystery of Kenya’s mother。 This whole book felt like a bad Disney Channel movie, most of the characters are so two dimensional and only have like one discernible trait that is their entire personality。 The events that randomly happen in this story are so wild and just dumb? That whole section at the end should honestly have been workshopped because it was just terrible and hard to follow。 I also found the epilogue to be somewhat pointless? Like two characters get together that have never once interacted and I honestly have no idea what the point of it was?If you like teen drama and not a lot of depth this is the book for you。 。。。more

Crest is going on his Journey, a rite of passage for all 16 year old merfolk。 They must spend one moon cycle on land, help a human, and experience life on two legs。 When Crest washes up on the beach in Santa Monica, the first person they meet is 16 year old lifeguard Sean who has just had his boyfriend dump him for his former best friend。 Crest agrees to pretend to be Sean’s new partner to make his ex jealous and win him back。I really loved Jay’s Gay Agenda and was really hoping to love this too Crest is going on his Journey, a rite of passage for all 16 year old merfolk。 They must spend one moon cycle on land, help a human, and experience life on two legs。 When Crest washes up on the beach in Santa Monica, the first person they meet is 16 year old lifeguard Sean who has just had his boyfriend dump him for his former best friend。 Crest agrees to pretend to be Sean’s new partner to make his ex jealous and win him back。I really loved Jay’s Gay Agenda and was really hoping to love this too, but there were a couple things about it that I didn’t love right off the bat。 I’m not a fan of the “win back the ex” trope。 Also don’t love the “obsessed with romcom movies” trope。 (Is it a trope? I feel like I’ve seen it enough now in romance novels that it’s a trope。 Let’s just go ahead and add “obsessed with Disney movies” as a trope I’m not a fan of while we’re at it, that’s not in this book–thank goodness–but I’m just putting it out there。) There’s also an almost cheating scene which made me very nervous!!!I did love the main characters Crest and Sean, I loved Crest’s fun personality and fashion sense, the nonbinary rep, “fish (merfolk) out of water” is always a trope I enjoy, I loved that Sean was kind of a bear cub and was pretty confident, I liked the side characters, and I really loved the message of the book which is basically I don't need to be in a relationship to be happy for Sean, and Humans aren’t all terrible and there are actually some amazing and beautiful things in their world for Crest, and I actually liked the way it ended which surprised me。 I really liked the resolution with Miguel too。In short, I mostly enjoyed it, but didn’t super love it。 You might like it more than me if you are maybe someone who is really into romcom movies。I listened to the audiobook and thought narrators Andre Santana and Neo Cihi did a great job although they both spoke so slowly I had to listen at 1。45x, (I usually listen to books at 1。2x to 1。3x)。 。。。more

Yet again I just think I'm too old for YA books sometimes。 I liked the ending; I liked all the characters development。 But it was a bit hysterical sometimes and over the top。 Like the scene at the Hollywood boulevard。 The two promposals June described。 They are three examples。I liked Seans perspective more than Crest's。 I think that mostly because I listened to the audiobook and Crest's narrator made him sound very annoying。 He was kind of sinful and never really liked humans。 That could be okay but he thought about it every other line in the book。 It got repetitive really fast, even if I agree with him。 We polute the water without a second thought and we overfish the seas。 But we don't need to get reminded about that every second。 So yeah liked the premise but not what June made with it? It was cute it was ok but that's it。 It could have been awesome if everythign wasn't so hysterical and in yourface all the time。First sidenote: Everyone was horny al the freaking time。 And I didn't really buy the love story。 Because Sean and Crest either yelled and was angry towards one another or smashed lips and hooked up。 Personal thing: It felt so hecking sinful to read about teenagers boners, sexlife and so on。Second sidenote, a very personal sidenote that people don't need to give a crap about (I blame my Iwatobi Free!! anime brain and my own experience with competitive swimming): I should be able to not take this into account, because it's just a story。 I know why June wrote Sean as a hairy big dude。 A character like that is almost never portrayed in a book。 I love the body positivity。 I understand why he need to like water, so Crest can see him for something more other than a "nasty blowhole of a human"。 BUT, he is an elite swimmer。 I'm so sorry to say, but guys in the swim culture shave to get even faster, that's just how it is。 And with all the training Sean does, he should not be that pudgy and to swim as fast as he does, he can't be that big。 I'M SO SORRY TO SAY THAT。 He could love the water in other aspects, surfing mayhaps? deep diving? just something else。 I couldn't stop thinking about it and put this a side。 I'm sorry。 。。。more
