Summary

Persuasion, Jane Austen's last novel, is a moving, masterly and elegiac love story tinged with the heartache of missed opportunities。

It tells the story of Anne Elliot, who, persuaded to break off her engagement to the man she loved because he was not successful enough, has never forgotten him。 When he returns, he brings with him a tantalizing second chance of happiness。

Going into this read, there was already a certain poignancy that hung over the knowledge that this was Austen’s final novel。 For what it may have lacked in the scintillating sparkle of her earlier works, it more than made up for through its deep and thoughtful progression of tension and character, which made for an immensely gratifying read。 A fine mix of Austen’s signature wit: “Personal size and mental sorrow have certainly no necessary proportions。 A large bulky figure has as good a right to Going into this read, there was already a certain poignancy that hung over the knowledge that this was Austen’s final novel。 For what it may have lacked in the scintillating sparkle of her earlier works, it more than made up for through its deep and thoughtful progression of tension and character, which made for an immensely gratifying read。 A fine mix of Austen’s signature wit: “Personal size and mental sorrow have certainly no necessary proportions。 A large bulky figure has as good a right to be in deep affliction, as the most graceful set of limbs in the world。 But, fair or not fair, there are unbecoming conjunctions, which reason will patronize in vain, - which taste cannot tolerate, - which ridicule will seize。”Observation: “…autumn, that season of peculiar and inexhaustible influence on the mind of taste and tenderness”and of course, romance: “You pierce my soul。 I am half agony, half hope… I have loved none but you。”Personally, what set it further apart for me, was a hint of melancholic existentialism in the rich inner monologue of an older Austen heroine, that was both relatable and suggestive of Austen imparting her own self into this novel for her readers before they parted for good。 。。。more

This might be one of my favorite Jane Austen books! What do I love? The heroine with such a strong head on her shoulders, the hilariously vain father, a love interest worth swooning over。

I am a diehard Austen fan, but there’s something that really stands out in the mature tone and nuance of this book。 I think that having a slightly older heroine adds to the book and the more melancholy tone throughout a lot of the novel really sets it apart from Austen’s other work。 I’m very glad I took the time to re-read this one。

It was really a good book。 I love it all

This is definitely my favorite Jane Austen novel! I loved Anne and the reunification of an old love plot line! Always a fan of the subtlety of a Jane Austen love story and liked that this book was a quicker read than Emma or Pride and Prejudice

I know this is a classic。 I know this。 I had a hard time getting through this。 I lasted 2 chapters before I got the audiobook and followed along hoping it would make more sense。 I think you have to be in the right mindset to read a book like this。 I don’t like how women are portrayed in period pieces。 Anne’s family were so mean to her。 I did like the letter where our love interest professed his undying love for Anne。 That was like a single page near the end of the book。 I think Jane Austen is a I know this is a classic。 I know this。 I had a hard time getting through this。 I lasted 2 chapters before I got the audiobook and followed along hoping it would make more sense。 I think you have to be in the right mindset to read a book like this。 I don’t like how women are portrayed in period pieces。 Anne’s family were so mean to her。 I did like the letter where our love interest professed his undying love for Anne。 That was like a single page near the end of the book。 I think Jane Austen is a great author。 This just wasn’t my favorite story。 。。。more

Persuasion brought back my suppressed emotions。Some people are together but they don't love each other。 And, some people love each other but are not together。"Love me, you idiot。 Love me or kill me now。 I can't bear it。""It's okay to find love on your terms, however unorthodox。" Persuasion brought back my suppressed emotions。Some people are together but they don't love each other。 And, some people love each other but are not together。"Love me, you idiot。 Love me or kill me now。 I can't bear it。""It's okay to find love on your terms, however unorthodox。" 。。。more

Surprisingly, I find myself most attached to Mary。 She's so real 😂。I may be reading too much into it but Jane Austen's commentary on women's fate just feels so modern? Recent? This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Como siempre Jane Austen nos ofrece una protagonista extraordinaria: Anne Elliot。 Un lovers to enemies to lovers que me ha encantado❤️ La crítica a la sociedad de la época muy acertada。

You pierce my soul。 I am half agony, half hope。I liked this a lot more than I thought I would。 This is my first Austen book and I was a little nervous。 There were some parts that really dragged but omg THE YEARNING WAS PALPABLE。 I did read this for the Netflix movie, but I have heard that it’s not a very good adaptation ☠️

I first read this as a teenager and it wasn't my favorite Austen, but I appreciated it much more this time around。 Might be my second favorite after Pride & Prejudice? It's less overtly witty, but Anne's character transformation is thoughtful, and very well done。 Maybe I'll reread more Austen in the future。 I first read this as a teenager and it wasn't my favorite Austen, but I appreciated it much more this time around。 Might be my second favorite after Pride & Prejudice? Jane Austen can literally do no wrong in my eyes, and obviously I’m going to love her at her most satirical, but Capt。 Wentworth seems like kind of a fuckboy。

Sorry for all those hard core fans。 Maybe Regency romance written 200 years ago is not my thing。 The romance mostly all happened before the book。 I liked several of the characters, but some were down right horrible。 Maybe that was part of Austen's portrayal of high society。 I guess I never felt any tension that Anne would go any other way and the end was a forgone conclusion。 I feel bad for the women of this age。I'm going to make it worse, I enjoyed the recent Netflix movie more than this book。 Sorry for all those hard core fans。 Maybe Regency romance written 200 years ago is not my thing。 The romance mostly all happened before the book。 I liked several of the characters, but some were down right horrible。 Maybe that was part of Austen's portrayal of high society。 I guess I never felt any tension that Anne would go any other way and the end was a forgone conclusion。 I feel bad for the women of this age。I'm going to make it worse, I enjoyed the recent Netflix movie more than this book。 It "fixes" a lot of my complaints。 Granted Anne would not behave the way she does in the movie in many aspects, but as far as my entertainment, reading the book enhanced the enjoyment of the movie。 。。。more
