LISTEN! I ADORE this series SO FREAKING MUCH! I love the characters and their development and their relationships。 I love the storylines and the connections and all that jazz。 Its so whimsical and captivating and I love this world so freaking much! I (parasocially) love Connie, so much and I respect her, have followed her for a VERY long time and I support her in all of the things! But I gotta be honest here and say that the writing style and execution are a bit amateur and can be sloppy on occa LISTEN! I ADORE this series SO FREAKING MUCH! But I gotta be honest here and say that the writing style and execution are a bit amateur and can be sloppy on occasion。 Now look, I understand that the series is intended for younger audiences, that’s great and I love that, however that doesn’t mean that the craftwork needs to essentially be “dumbed down。” (Been thinking about doing a blog post related to this since 5evar) There is just A LOT of telling instead of showing and that has REALLY negatively affected readers connections with the characters and their relationships。 In book 1, it mentions how close Ellie and Lottie have gotten and how great she is as a math tutor, but we never really get to SEE that。 It’s so weird because sometimes the descriptions of things are very good and visual, but other descriptions like other characters feelings are so detached that you can’t really feel what they’re feeling。 Idk I still love this series helluva lot and will read the last book and obsess over everything about it, I just feel like there was a way to make the craftwork more effective without making it inaccessible for its target audience。 。。。more

How can they just randomly keep skipping and hopping on a flight to maldova。 The whole flower festival as well confused me its mentioned to occur every summer。 Here theres a mention of them being halted indefinitely, which probably explains why one didnt occur that summer (possibly cause they were also in Japan)。 But then Willemena brings up the golden flower festival that happens every ten years will go ahead, because 'if they don't stick to traditions, people will suspect something is wrong'。 Based of the way I read it I had assumed the book would end at the golden flower festival as its brought up in chapter two(until the sudden mention of the PoP's later one) given it makes sense because its the summer after the third year。 But at the end of the book (near end of school year) ellie states its in a years time (2019)。 Does that mean the will or wont hold a flower festival that summer summer, if they are upholding tradition to save face。 With out that snip bit of info chapter 2 the whole chapter is basically a waste of time in my opinion and there may have been other ways to slide that info in because it basically seemed pointless for them to even speak to Ellie's family and like I said they gave no relevant or worthwhile information regarding the discovery in Japan。 Not to mention The ridiculous excuse of Jamie not being part of the immediate family this why he couldn't attend the meeting when lottie is in attenance, which btw held no info that Jamie couldn't hear。 Did noone stop to think wait why can lottie go when they have know her two years。 They seemed to question more why jamie couldnt attend when he has lived there his entire life。The random presentation of pillars that just so happens to occur every three years and goes towards university applications, made very little sense to me other than changing my mind to where the plot would reach its end。 I suppose it did give lottie a chance to discover what she wanted to do in life。The sudden added security measures Actually made it shocking that a high profile school didnt have more security measures in the first place, something that has played on my mind since book one。Partizans on sabbatical really how the hell does that work? I known I was told in the book。 But this plot point doesn't make any sense given a partizans job, it seems as though their were conflicting rules in the job description。 Loke they are supposed to be devoted to thoer masters but wait every 5 years they get one off。 For me it detracted from the idea that the job of a Partizan is loke being trapped。The constant repeating of the same phrases to point things out for example sweet scent like babypowder is such an obvious give away its beyond ridiculous, especially when its revealed before the scene unfolds, then to immediately afterwards be told yeah its the hamelin formula。 As if i didnt already know that from the first and more obviously the second book thats what it smelled like。 Of course this happen with other phrases and character descriptions。The constant reminders of characters physical appearance is especially jarring especially so in book 3, but now i once again putting myself through these repetitive phrases and points。 And still the large consistency of telling over showing yet again。 Whilst I will admit i did see some writing improvement compared to the previous three books。The phrase nothing had knocked them down before page 46, I beg to differ since the three main characters are keeping secrets from each other, all had the self blame game at some point in the story and of course have shown time and time again they are terrible at working as a team, instead choosing to work as lone wolves。Pg 57 where lottie has internal monologue of it being too late to tell jamie about Haru is laughable。 Just because Haru is aware they know it was no reason not to tell Jamie who was already suspicious。 Though in all honesty it was stupid he didn't make the connection in book 3。 Then again from this book chapter 11 pg93 jamie watched haru, facinated by how much strength he was able to cover up by simply slipping on a shirt。 This makes it sound to me like he his showing his bare chest and abdomen while slipping on a shirt in front of Jamie。 Jamie is painted to be an observant yet he is watching this happen and doesn't notice the scar yet it isn't until Chapter 26 pg 226 'with a great ripping sound, the fabric tore down the middle and Haru recoiled, but not quite fast enough Jamie saw it: a small white scar on his stomach。' during a spar scene where haru rips his shirt in what could have only been afew seconds he spots it and connects the dots。In all honesty the threat that Haru presented at all to them was poor, I didn't ever see him as a truely threatening character even with the student mind control, probably due to the lack of showing me more through action rather than telling me about his cruel facial expressions and getting students to commit petty school drama and rumours。 Ay least in book one we didn't know for sure who sent the letters and in book two we didnt know exactly who was doing the poisoning (even if we could figure it out easily) here we know the threat and he hasn't done anything to show how dangerous he can really be。It seems that so many characters seem to have a wordless knowing of what others are thinking at the most opportunistic times。 Like a constant sense of knowing, yet they cant seem to figure out The clues of main plot points The moment binah found out she had a secret was there really any point in drawing it out。 It clearly didn't take long for someone to find out she wasn't treading carefully about it。 Plus Binah is a smart character I don't understand how she didn't immediately see the dates, if anyone has a basic knowledge of Japanese writing systems it was so obvious, in fact I didn't even need to know the word meaning of decade to figure it out。I could go on but overall I'm really no enjoying the series but given I've made it this far I suppose I should finish it。 。。。more

An engaging and entertaining mystery concerning the secrets of a royal family and those who seek to take it down。 You will definitely need to read the previous books in the series to make sense of the plot in this fourth instalment。Thank you @penguinbooksaus and @penguinkidsaustralia for gifting me this book to read!

Princess at Heart was a magical experience to read。 It was definitely a very intense read and you wouldn’t be able to read it without reading the other instalments of the series。 Let me just say that I cried a lot, it had me sobbing。 I am so immersed into these books and the world of Rosewood that this book has caused me so much heartbreak。 These characters mean the world to me as I can relate and connect to them more than I can with people in my real life。 This book has left me distraught。 I wo Princess at Heart was a magical experience to read。 It was definitely a very intense read and you wouldn’t be able to read it without reading the other instalments of the series。 Let me just say that I cried a lot, it had me sobbing。 I am so immersed into these books and the world of Rosewood that this book has caused me so much heartbreak。 These characters mean the world to me as I can relate and connect to them more than I can with people in my real life。 This book has left me distraught。 I wonder what the final book will bring us。 I am sad that this beautiful series is coming to an end but like all good things, it must come to an end。 I’m glad that I picked up Undercover Princess in 2017/18 and I’m grateful for Connie Glynn for creating this universe。 It’s helped me find myself in more ways than I could’ve just by myself。 I can’t wait to see what the final book will bring us。 。。。more

I'm writing this review mere minutes after finishing 'Princess at Heart' because I want my immediate thoughts and authentic reaction to be written down。 First of all。。。 Wow。'Princess at Heart' is the fourth instalment in 'The Rosewood Chronicles' and I can safely say it is the best in the series so far。 Every single page had me on the edge of my seat。 Following on from the intense reveal seen at the end of book three (no spoilers!) this book was packed with so much action and so many unexpected I'm writing this review mere minutes after finishing 'Princess at Heart' because I want my immediate thoughts and authentic reaction to be written down。 First of all。。。 Wow。'Princess at Heart' is the fourth instalment in 'The Rosewood Chronicles' and I can safely say it is the best in the series so far。 Every single page had me on the edge of my seat。 Following on from the intense reveal seen at the end of book three (no spoilers!) this book was packed with so much action and so many unexpected twists。 It captivated me in such a way that even when I wasn't reading, my mind was still at Rosewood Hall。 Over the past three years- since I have been following the series since the publication of 'Undercover Princess' in 2017- I have grown so fond of each of these characters。 However, in this book I found myself enamoured of them more than I have been previously。 The character development in 'Princess at Heart' is outstanding。 I found myself rooting for the characters in such a way that, if anything slighted them in any minuscule way, I was almost personally affronted。 I love them each so dearly and I cannot wait to see what comes of them in the next book (Connie, give Jamie a break!!!!)。As always with this series, I was heart warmed by the representation。 It is so important for representation, such as that seen in these books, to be seen。 I especially love that it is done in such a subtle way- rather than a spectacle being made of it。 These characters are queer and that's all there is to it! It normalises being lgbtq+ in a way that should really be seen more frequently in fiction。 It means so much to me, as it will mean so much to any young lgbtq+ kids who read these books。Lastly, the overall magic of this book is so wonderful。 It is just one part of a fairy tale- one just like those that Lottie loves so much。 The romance, friendship, grandeur and even the sinister edge is all a part of what made 'Princess at Heart' such a joy to read。 Now comes the painstaking wait for the next book。。。 。。。more

WHAT A RIDE!?This book was amazing, just like the rest of the series。 Though i do feel it missed a bit of the magical atmosphere the previous books have had (mostly in the beginning, it got better, and also it partly made sense with the plot) the charecters, relationships, the whimsical setting of Rosewood hall and the crazy plot secured this book as a five star。 I especially loved how the friendships evolved, Binah IS THE BEST!, and some of the later scenes nearly brought tears to my eyes :(The WHAT A RIDE!?This book was amazing, just like the rest of the series。 Though i do feel it missed a bit of the magical atmosphere the previous books have had (mostly in the beginning, it got better, and also it partly made sense with the plot) the charecters, relationships, the whimsical setting of Rosewood hall and the crazy plot secured this book as a five star。 I especially loved how the friendships evolved, Binah IS THE BEST!, and some of the later scenes nearly brought tears to my eyes :(The ending was WILD, I NEED THE NEXT BOOK NOWWWWWW! No problems at all with customs or anything, it went just as quickly as usual。Also, the dedication mentions Covid-19。 This is the first mention I've seen of it in a book - wonder how many more will follow。。。Something that struck me as well: This book is set around 2018-2019, apparently, and someone in this book is given a birth date in 2000。 That。。。 makes me feel old。 It's one of those moments where you realise that time keeps on slippin' into the future, even in The Marvellous World of Books。The cover didn't really speak to me as the other ones did, the first time I saw it online。 However, sometimes it just doesn't come across as it does in print。 When I held the book in my hands, I was awestruck, because the colours are truly beautiful。 Well done! The book starts off with a prologue from Ollie's point of view。 Since I've always thought Ollie to be a bit of a superfluous character in the story, that didn't bode too well for me。 However, he hardly is hardly present at all in the book。 So: big 'oof'。If I'm right, Book 5 - the next book - will be the last one in the series。 And this book does feel like one in which the story is slowly but surely going towards the endgame。 What that endgame will be like。。。 Search me。 I really haven't got a clue。 Book 4 is also 'only' 320 pages long, but it's chock-full of。。。 well, everything, really。 Mysteries, excitement, emotions (I'll be getting to that in a bit), it's all in there。Lottie and Ellie are two amazing characters, and I love them very much (despite some。。。 things, which I'll be getting back to)。 Looking at where they've come from, the path they've taken, they're so different from when I first met them in Book 1。 It's a marvel。And now。。。 The bad stuff。 I have to warn you: It will be very long, it will be, in a way, intimate, there may be unmarked spoilers for the story, and it will probably sound rather incoherent at times。 Now that that's out of the way, let's get to it。I believe everyone has elements in stories that they love, and other ones that they loathe。 The love triangle is one of the obvious ones, of course, but there are a lot more, and I'm going to talk about one of those here。 Let me explain what this is about。In book series, main characters that have never met one another are often thrown together in one big story。 Along the way, they may learn that they are special, and they learn to appreciate one another, they become friends, or (sooner or later) something more。 But after they become friends, and before the story ultimately finishes, there is often a period in which what they know gets turned upside down, and it has far-reaching consequences。 Or, it may be that they start to understand that they are not the same after all, and that they don't know each other as well as they thought。 What follows then is a part of the story where those main characters drift away from each other, very often because they don't understand, don't want to understand, what the problem is, and they somehow can't talk to each other about it, they keep secrets。 It seems a bit weird writing this out, but you'll probably understand what I'm talking about, I hope。 In trilogies, this is often in the second book, for example。Here's the catch: I hate, loathe those storylines。 I think it's terrible。 On an abstract level, I get why the authors do that。 It's because they want to deepen their characters, to make them more real, and I understand that, but I've always found it horrible to read about。It was already visible in the previous book, The Lost Princess, that something was going on。 Cracks started to appear in the relationship between Ellie and Lottie。 And that storyline evolves further throughout Book 4。 They don't talk to each other, they keep secrets from one another, they don't understand each other。 For 320 pages long。 Their storylines - of the two of them apart and together - went in a direction that, as a reader who is emotionally invested a lot in these characters, I found terrible。 As a reader who wants character development and a good ending in Book 5, it would be amazing - but that happens on an abstract level, it's the emotional level that took over with me。It made me sick。 Literally。 I know what you're thinking: That's not true, you're just overdoing it a bit right now, Tim。 But I am being completely honest with you here。 I read the first 240 pages in the afternoon, and afterward I hardly ate during dinner。 I had no appetite at all, my stomach was upset, I couldn't stop thinking about what was happening, I felt tired。 I was truly in a bad place for some time。 On an emotional and relational level, this book is, if you ask me, very dark。It would be easy to say that it's all, or mostly, Ellie's fault, but I believe that's just because you mostly follow the story through Lottie's eyes。 And yes, Ellie does make some serious mistakes: She doesn't trust Lottie, she keeps too many important secrets, she does wrong things, she is cruel and dishonest。 However, I would like to argue that Lottie is to blame equally badly: She too doesn't trust Ellie, keeps too many secrets, she is too scared to speak up, she does wrong things and she is dishonest as well。I am not going to say that their relationship has evolved in an irrealistic way, because what would I know of it? Especially in a situation like this one。 However, I do want to say that I think that their relationship's evolution is。。。 horrible, on very many levels, and I had a lot of trouble getting through this book。The book ends with a cliffhanger that (that much is clear) has been coming for a very long time。 I don't know what to make of it - or rather, I don't know what that means for their relationship and story line。 I don't have a clue how it's going to evolve from this point onwards。 I'm just praying that, in the end, in Book 5, everything will turn out right。 'All's well that ends well,' they say, and I hope that will become truth as the story comes to a close。 I hope that Ellie and Lottie will finally be able to talk to each other again, that they'll understand each other and be able to live with their differences and things they have in common。Normally, when a new book in a series comes out, I re-read at least the previous book (sometimes the entire series), so everything is still fresh in my mind。 I don't think I'm going to do that this time。 I don't think I can read Princess at Heart without knowing what comes next。 I hope that everything will turn out all right in Book 5, and that I'll then be able to re-read all the books, including Book 4, because they I'll know that it will be fine and it will be less hard for me to struggle my way through it on an emotional level。 But without that closure。。。 I don't think I can take it。I would like to end this entire explanation with a quote from the very first page of the book, something which is said by Ollie: Lottie loved the storm because she said it was the start of something new - because no matter how violent the raging winds and rain, no matter how loud the thunder, a storm meant the tension would be released, that the earth would be fresh and cool once more。I can only hope, deep in my heart, that Book 4 was that storm, and that it has now passed and the tension has been released。 Because that would mean that Book 5 will indeed be fresh and cool, or at least have a fresh and cool ending。 I could sure use it。So you might wonder, if it made me feel so bad, why am I giving the book five stars? Because it clearly was a horrible experience for me, so shouldn't the book be bad?The answer's very easy, really: Anyone who succeeds in making me feel as emotional as I am now, deserves five stars。 It's really the highest praise you can get from me if you're writing a book, and it happens only very rarely。 It doesn't matter if I feel 'bad' and if that makes the book 'bad', because in a weird way that I can't explain I do honestly think that it is bad。。。 What does matter is that someone - Glynn, in this case - has succeeded in making me feel like this。 That is why I am giving Princess at Heart five stars。 This book went straight for and to my heart。 I don't think I've ever felt so bad after reading a book, and that's a big compliment。 Well done, Connie Glynn, although I do hope you'll give us a happy ending in Book 5。 If you're not sure yet, let me tell you this: If these books are written to be like, and based on, fairy tales, it would only be fitting that The Rosewood Chronicles also ends with '。。。 and they both live happily ever after。'10+/10 。。。more

I could not put this down。 Loved this book。 But the issue with it is it is left on a huge cliffhanger and I need to know what happens next。

My goodness。 Read this in a day, it was so good。 The end hit me like a ton of bricks along with a few other parts of the story。 Be aware when going into this volume, it is a hard-hitting one。

My favourite book so far in the series!

Wow, this was the most painful Rosewood Chronicles installment until now 😐 I miss the cosyness of the first book - this was dark from page 1。 I should probably stop recommending it to young girls but this series is so thrilling and entertaining。 I'm sure kids can handle darkness。 Also the trio - Lottie, Ellie and Jamie - is just too brilliant。 I love all 3 of them (although I have a soft spot for Lottie)。 But that ending was so depressing!!! This is personally my favourite book in the series so far! I loved the way the characters responded to various events and hardships throughout and I was so happy to see some of the side characters like Lercy and Raph get more time。
