Summary

The Davies and Montgomery families have been locked in an ancient feud。 But it’s a thin line between love and hate in Kate Bateman's A Daring Pursuit。

TWO ENEMIES
Carys Davies is doing everything in her power to avoid marriage。 Staying single is the only way to hide the secret that could ruin her—and her family—if it was revealed。 For the past two seasons she’s scandalized the ton with her outrageous outfits and brazen ways in a futile bid to deter potential suitors。 Outwardly confident and carefree, inside she’s disillusioned with both men and love。 There’s only one person who’s never bought her act—the only man who makes her heart race: Tristan Montgomery, one of her family’s greatest rivals。

ONE SCANDALOUS BARGAIN
Wickedly proper architect Tristan needs a respectable woman to wed, but he’s never stopped wanting bold, red-headed Carys。 When she mockingly challenges him to show her what she’s missing by not getting married, Tristan shocks them both by accepting her indecent proposal: one week of clandestine meetings, after which they’ll go their separate ways。 But kissing each other is almost as much fun as arguing, and their affair burns hotter than either of them expects。 When they find themselves embroiled in a treasonous plot, can they trust each other with their hearts, their secrets…and their lives?

I requested an ARC of this book, and all opinions are my own。 Carys & Tristan are absolutely delicious, and I loved every second of their tempestuous relationship。 It was obvious from the start that they were in love, but due to the feud between their families they both thought it was hopeless。 Luckily, they are able to find their way past all of that to the lovely happily ever after。I definitely recommend this book。

DOWNRIGHT FUCKEN ELECTRIC ⚡️i just loooved everything about this story。 from carys trying to untangle the intricate mess that is the grasp patriarchy and the eyes of “gentle society” to tristan being the unapologetic malewife and reserving the right to ride right through every storm together while loving and cherishing and protecting carys every step of the way 💅 also, i think i mentioned this in my review for a reckless match but can we just talk about how amazing the other characters are。 i mean, gryff as a love interest in book one was ✨something✨ but this brooding welsh man as a an unproblematic yet loving and protective brother to carys mADE ME FUCKING WEAK IN THE KNEES。 idk what else to say。 just 👏🏽 so 👏🏽 fucking 👏🏽 utterly 👏🏽 good 👏🏽if you’re reading this, plzz go do yourself a favour and devour this story immediately (and read the first book too while you’re at it 🤍)。also as a final note—consider this my unofficial pledge to devour anything and everything that kate bateman writes (both backlist and upcoming releases) ☝🏽 。。。more

Another fun one in the series。 The enemies part didn't feel quite as strong in this one (compared to the first one), however, I did like the side plot better。 Another fun one in the series。 The enemies part didn't feel quite as strong in this one (compared to the first one), however, I did like the side plot better。 。。。more

Book 2 in Kate Bateman's Ruthless Rivals series is a fun romp of a Regency that returns to the Davies-Montgomery family feud that was introduced in Book 1。 Carys Davies has decided to remove herself from the marriage mart by being the most outrageous she can be, and dressing as scandalously as she can get away with。 What no one knows is the pain behind her actions。 Ruined by a scoundrel who promised marriage then turned around and married someone else within weeks, she's now being blackmailed by Book 2 in Kate Bateman's Ruthless Rivals series is a fun romp of a Regency that returns to the Davies-Montgomery family feud that was introduced in Book 1。 Carys Davies has decided to remove herself from the marriage mart by being the most outrageous she can be, and dressing as scandalously as she can get away with。 What no one knows is the pain behind her actions。 Ruined by a scoundrel who promised marriage then turned around and married someone else within weeks, she's now being blackmailed by the cad。 Since no one will want to marry her, she decides to fend men off by becoming an undesirable match。 Unfortunately, her incredible beauty, and gorgeous figure work against her。 Keeping her secret from her three older brothers is a trial, but no one is more surprised than she when the man who learns it, not only steps up to protect her, but offers to show her what she will miss out on if she follows the course she's set for her life。 Can she protect her heart when it has always wanted her enemy?Tristan Montgomery wants a quiet wife with an impeccable reputation。 Why then can't he stop thinking about Carys? While the woman he's chosen to court meets all of his criteria, she also bores him to tears。 Everything about Carys seems wrong, but his body wants her like no other。 When he walks in on a conversation he's not meant to hear, he rescues her from the man attempting to collect blackmail money from her。 Hearing her story infuriates him。 How can she possibly believe, with her passionate nature, that she would be content in a celibate marriage? Offering to show her that there's more pleasure than she experienced at the hands of the scoundrel, he believes he can spend one week tutoring her and go on to his chosen wife。 Proving himself wrong never felt so good!Intrigues abound in A Daring Pursuit, and the affair that Carys and Tristan embark on heats up the pages。 Readers should prepare to laugh often, and to enjoy the byplay, even among the side characters。 I look forward to whichever of Carys' brothers is next (or Tristan's family。 I really don't care which。) I definitely recommend to readers who love a steamy historical。 There's plenty of steam, lots of intrigue, and some quite funny situations。 。。。more

I love a good opposites-attract, childhood "enemies" romance with a dash of pining! Tristan was such a charming hero - his dry humour and wit was hilarious! I don’t know why I love Kate Bateman stories … no wait that’s not true。 For me the thing I love is her pacing。 Nothing ever seems rushed。 I’m never left wishing I had seen something else or that I needed to have one or two more scenes to buy into the love story。 Even if her heroes take a bit of time to let their feelings out to the heroine, they know their own minds and that makes the pacing work。 Plus I just love the whole feuding families who argue so much they actually are obsessed with each I don’t know why I love Kate Bateman stories … no wait that’s not true。 For me the thing I love is her pacing。 Nothing ever seems rushed。 I’m never left wishing I had seen something else or that I needed to have one or two more scenes to buy into the love story。 Even if her heroes take a bit of time to let their feelings out to the heroine, they know their own minds and that makes the pacing work。 Plus I just love the whole feuding families who argue so much they actually are obsessed with each other and fall in love thing she has with this series。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 “Why can’t we be enemies with … benefits?” First, I’ll say that so far this series is the childhood-acquaintance-to-adult-lovers stuff of my dreams。 I LOVE the childhood-friends (or childhood-enemies) trope。 Most series only have one book with it, and it's usually not the first one so I have to plow through the first several before getting to it。 So far it looks like every book in this series has it so I am one HAPPY camper。 I know most people enjoy enemies-to-lovers, but I say why not both? 😆 I “Why can’t we be enemies with … benefits?” First, I’ll say that so far this series is the childhood-acquaintance-to-adult-lovers stuff of my dreams。 I LOVE the childhood-friends (or childhood-enemies) trope。 Most series only have one book with it, and it's usually not the first one so I have to plow through the first several before getting to it。 So far it looks like every book in this series has it so I am one HAPPY camper。 I know most people enjoy enemies-to-lovers, but I say why not both? 😆 I also love this author’s writing style and sense of humor。 The scene comparing body parts to architectural terms was to this book as the dictionary game of wits was to the last book—excellently written and my favorite scene。 I also loved the scene where they were exploring Tristan's new house and it was everything Carys ever hoped for--the poignancy hit me in the feels。 There are also some EXCELLENT quotes, like the one above。 That said, I didn’t enjoy this book as much as the first one。 I think partly it was because the family feud was much less present, and partly because it was so apparent in the first few pages that the characters didn't dislike each other at all but were in fact ALREADY madly in love。 This made the rest of the book seem almost superfluous when it came to building up the love story between the two。 I also didn't like Carys or Tristan nearly as much。 Carys seemed to be the kind of heroine I usually love, the kind who dresses flamboyantly, acts fiesty, and pines after the one man she can't have。 And don't get me wrong--I loved her banter and I loved her attitude about clothes (as someone who loves clothes myself, I can always appreciate a kindred spirit)。 However, I felt that underneath all that front, she was really quite weak。 First, her ploy to distract the ton from the topic of her marriage by wearing outrageous dresses seemed stupid--if anything, she was drawing attention to herself, not to mention it clearly did nothing to deter her suitors。 Second, I had a hard time feeling sympathy for her continually paying Howe blackmail money and never asking anybody for help。 It's one thing to be a woman completely without anyone to ask for help, it's another to be a woman surrounded by loving brothers and family。 Especially since Howe is such a slimy character and clearly using her money to pay off his own gambling debts。 At a certain point, not asking for help always seems to me like a weakness rather than a strength, and this went on for TWO YEARS。 But this is far and away her more forgivable trait because it's part of her character development。 Finally, I had a really hard time with her supposed feelings for Tristan。 The first reason I had for this was because she kept explaining that she wanted Tristan because he was the only one who didn't pay her any attention。 As much as this may be true, and a viable way to START noticing someone, it comes across as rather whiny and self-absorbed and doesn't seem like it can be the sole reason for sustaining years of attraction。 I might've been more okay with it if, aside from that, she had some other aspects of his character that she really liked。 The second reason I have is that for someone who is supposedly in love with him for years, she was astoundingly clueless when it came to him, spoke as if she wasn't nervous in his presence, and--the straw that broke the camel's back for me--she WASN'T SURE if her heart would be involved in their trysts together。 And then wanted to run away when she realized that it was。 I like heroines who have fire, but they also need to have a core of self respect and be able to think sense。 I had similar reasons for my dislike of Tristan。 The fact that he was (supposedly) the cold and buttoned up type didn't necessarily bother me。 What bothered me was that he wasn't ACTUALLY all that cold。 What, exactly, made him seem so? Only because he had very good self control and didn't flit after Carys like all the other men? Or because he had picked a "sensible" wife out already? To me this does not a full character make。 Underneath that was a raging passion that burned only for our precious heroine, which effectively turned his entire "cold" personality into some sort of fancy dressage while underneath he is EXACTLY the same as any other hot blooded hero。 On top of this, he had this idea that he was going to marry--Lavinia? whatever her name was--because she "seemed" like the proper wife for him, but later it's revealed that the entire time he was building his dream house, he was thinking of Carys。 I mean, it's one thing to have blind spots, it's another thing to be clueless to that degree。 My real beef with him, however, is probably more rooted in a personal values kind of thing。 I simply couldn't respect him。 When he first misunderstood Carys's reasons for meeting up with Howe in secret, his initial reaction was RELIEF that now that he knew she was a "loose" woman, he could feel okay about wanting her for himself。 And then I was upset at him for agreeing to this tryst with Carys, knowing that he has strong feelings for her, knowing that he's planning to offer for someone else, and knowing that it will all only last a week。 To me, that's too much foreknowledge to excuse treating her so cheaply。 And the fact that it was all justified for the sake of "teaching her what she might miss out on" seemed like a ridiculous excuse to just act on all his baser instincts。 What annoys me is that we're promised a wild, take-no-prisoners female lead and a cold, buttoned up male lead who mutually find passion with each other, but what we get instead is an insecure, innocent and clueless female lead with a vastly more experienced, passionate alpha male lead, which is to say, basically the same characters as every other HR out there。 And that's not necessarily a BAD thing (after all, I read plenty of those) but honestly I felt let down。 What I enjoyed about this book was the banter and some well written scenes, but in the end I only loved the shallowest aspects about it。 。。。more

After reading A Reckless Match, I couldn’t wait to read Carys and Tristan’s story。 I received an ARC from Netgalley and absolutely loved this book, #2 in the Ruthless Rivals series。 Carys is a force of nature, a fiery redhead with a flamboyant and impetuous nature。 Tristan is pretty much the opposite of that。 Plus the Davies and Montgomerys are sworn enemies, never mind that Tristan’s sister and Carys’ brother recently married。 Carys is so much fun, but I think one of the things I liked most was After reading A Reckless Match, I couldn’t wait to read Carys and Tristan’s story。 I received an ARC from Netgalley and absolutely loved this book, #2 in the Ruthless Rivals series。 Carys is a force of nature, a fiery redhead with a flamboyant and impetuous nature。 Tristan is pretty much the opposite of that。 Plus the Davies and Montgomerys are sworn enemies, never mind that Tristan’s sister and Carys’ brother recently married。 Carys is so much fun, but I think one of the things I liked most was her outrageous sartorial choices。 Her outfit in the opening scene is memorable for the details described。 “Her own outfit was still the most remarkable。 The sheer white fabric left one shoulder bare and draped, Grecian-style, diagonally across her body before flowing in liquid pleats to the floor。 The wide silver belt encircling her waist matched the quiver of arrows on her back, and the crescent moon that nestled in her hair surrounded by a galaxy of bobbing silvery stars。 It was the transparency of the material that had everyone whispering behind their fans…” In short, “Her dress was as sheer as a whisper, as if Botticelli’s Venus had stepped out of her giant shell and donned a chemise made of spiderwebs。”Carys had a bad experience and decided she does not wish to marry。 Rather than remaining a burden on her brother, she is considering marriage to a man who poses no risk to her, but I don't want to spoil why。 Still, she wonders whether there’s any reason to want what marriage has to offer。 “。。。logically she understood that making love couldn’t be unpleasant for everyone。 Having listened to her brothers’ ribald comments on the subject, she was quite sure men enjoyed it。 Then again, men seemed to enjoy plenty of unpleasant things, like chasing foxes and bludgeoning fish on the head, and getting so drunk they vomited in flowerpots, so their opinion hardly seemed reliable。”Carys is inordinately pleased whenever she can make Tristan lose control, because he is so tightly wound。 She loves to taunt him, but he also enjoy teasing her。 After a shared kiss “。。。she was pleased to notice that while his cravat was still impeccable, she’d managed to disrupt the perfection of his hair。 A tiny tuft was sticking out in the wrong direction, just behind his ear。 It seemed like a small but important victory。”Because they have so convinced everyone that they are enemies, no one thinks anything of them spending time alone。 They’re neighbors and have known each other all of their lives。 Tristan asks Carys to walk with him and she asks, “Won’t it cause speculation, if we disappear off into the woods together。” He responds, “Not the kind you mean。 They’ll think one of us is luring the other into the forest for a spot of murder。 Lots of places to hide a body around here。”Naturally, they fall in love, but each is determined to hide their feelings。 Carys is quicker to realize she loves Tristan and decides she must hide it at all costs。 Tristan takes longer to realize it, fighting it every step of the way, until he finally acknowledges that it has always been Carys who he has imagined as his wife。 Then, he can’t keep it to himself。The plot is fun, the characters are interesting, and the banter is amusing。 All in all, it’s a great book and I recommend it。 I think Morgan and Harriett are next, and I’m looking forward to it。 。。。more
