Summary

From Alexene Farol Follmuth the globally bestselling, TikTok viral author of The Atlas Six (under the penname Olivie Blake) comes My Mechanical Romance, an adorable opposites-attract YA romance that explores the vulnerability of first love。

Nerds are so hot。

Especially battle–robot–building nerds。

When Bel accidentally reveals a talent for engineering at school, she’s forced into joining the robotics club。
Enter Mateo Luna, perfect on paper – captain of the football team and the robotics club – who recognizes Bel as a potential asset, even if they couldn’t be more different。 And as the nights of after–school work grow longer, Bel and Teo realize they've made more than just a combat–ready robot for the championship: they’ve made a connection themselves。
But with graduation approaching, their differences and what they want for their futures, threatens what they’ve built together。

Can they survive Nationals without breaking their robots – or their hearts?

It was such a cute quirky romance read。 Loved it。 Although it started out slow it got very engaging later on。 I totally loved Bel's character。 I could totally relate to her with her indecisiveness and finding her own space! Although she really won me over with her kind and sharp skills! Girl's freaking amazing。 The power and resilience she exudes is totally on another level!!! Also Teo is totally like my favorite book boyfriend now 😂 Such a supportive and kind person ever。 I would definitely rec It was such a cute quirky romance read。 Loved it。 Although it started out slow it got very engaging later on。 I totally loved Bel's character。 I could totally relate to her with her indecisiveness and finding her own space! 4 STARS ⭐Nerds are so hot these daysI love how this book talks about the problems with having to choose a life path so young (because im going through it kinda)。This hits a little too close to home because i know how bel feels。Being around people where everyone knows what they want to do in the future and you are just。。 there。"And you don't understand how hard it is to be a girl competing with boys who don't even realise that they, unlike us, are perceived as more competent no matter what they 4 STARS ⭐Nerds are so hot these daysI love how this book talks about the problems with having to choose a life path so young (because im going through it kinda)。This hits a little too close to home because i know how bel feels。Being around people where everyone knows what they want to do in the future and you are just。。 there。"And you don't understand how hard it is to be a girl competing with boys who don't even realise that they, unlike us, are perceived as more competent no matter what they do。" THIS!! one thing i love about this book is how it highlights the challenges women go through in a male-dominated field like how the teacher favors men more than women, we shouldve " done more" just because we are women。 Overall, I love how olivie writes this book。 The family dynamics, how being a "high achiever" feels like, feeling lost during your senior high school year。 I loved the last five chapters but I wish the author could make this book a bit longer。 I personally think it was a bit rushed? It was good but there are some things that need more details (not saying it wasnt well written。。。 i just needed more of it) Lastly, im glad she didn't write bel as the typical fmc (weak etc) and i love her for that。THE EPILOGUE WAS PERFECT。 。。。more

2。5I was really hoping I would enjoy this much more than I did。 While I did enjoy the women in STEM focus (me being an architect I kind of get that) overall something felt off the entire book。 I felt like we were dropped in the middle of someone's family drama/life and nothing about their choices was explained as to why they would act like that。 It felt pretty shallow tbh。 While I kind of do understand the character of Neelum (I have no idea if this is how it's written since I listened via audio 2。5I was really hoping I would enjoy this much more than I did。 While I did enjoy the women in STEM focus (me being an architect I kind of get that) overall something felt off the entire book。 I felt like we were dropped in the middle of someone's family drama/life and nothing about their choices was explained as to why they would act like that。 It felt pretty shallow tbh。 While I kind of do understand the character of Neelum (I have no idea if this is how it's written since I listened via audiobook) was way out of line most of the time。 The romance was also not it。 It's really not enemies to lovers。 It's like one slight disagreement to insta-love in my opinion so it was really not entertaining either。 I just really expected to like this much more than I actually did。 I'm betting 50$ the author is a My Chemical Romance fan。 。。。more

Nothing wrong with this book。 I’m just not the demographic audience for it but I think for younger YA readers this would be quite uplifting for girls in STEM。

i will set aside my typical criticisms of yacontemporary, which is that they are unrealistic and implausible。 because, i laughed, i kicked my feet, i giggled, etc。 because i DID enjoy this。 my brain is not rotting from edgelord writers anymore god bless。 loved the writing style。 tbh i started to find most ya voice to be incredibly insufferable and i。。 did not feel that here? like it was cute and it felt like。 A real person。 and not like this very stiff awkward persona that sometimes appears when i will set aside my typical criticisms of yacontemporary, which is that they are unrealistic and implausible。 because, i laughed, i kicked my feet, i giggled, etc。 because i DID enjoy this。 my brain is not rotting from edgelord writers anymore god bless。 loved the writing style。 tbh i started to find most ya voice to be incredibly insufferable and i。。 did not feel that here? like it was cute and it felt like。 A real person。 and not like this very stiff awkward persona that sometimes appears when authors write teenages。i know that culture references can be very hit or miss but i appreciated that they were like vague and nameless rather than hinting at very specific (and VERY ephemeral) cultural phenomena。 like, oh, LA has influencers, instead of referencing a very specific influencer。 its fucking crazy to me that the book is titled my mechanical romance and there isnt ONE MCR REFERENCE IN THIS WHOLE BOOK??? WHATTHE HEHELRELLLL BE REAL BE FUCKING FORREALLLLactually am so fucking pissed that neelam is written like she is for so much of the book。 so one dimensional, feels like a weird caricature (not necessarily of like brownness thank god (although i will say that scene where they're explaining holi is so 😬😬😬😬 Like i wish the narration had been a LITTLE more forgiving)) but like。 i physically cannot imagine anyone acting like neelam is honest to god。 neelam is my queen i wish bel as a character had been explored more because i don't really know。。 that much about her? there's several subplots going, but the romance one overtakes all - which, like。 Why bring in the misogyny of robotics if you're going to abandon it as soon as ~teo and bel fall in love~ same goes for the divorce subplot kind of related。 i should really stop reading STEM romance books because i always get upset when the only focus is the romance。corny ass ending (i need to find the nearest cliff)(also, it should have been bel and neelam。) 。。。more

it's been a while since i read a YA romance and liked it this much。 this was so well written, emotionally and comedically。 i enjoyed this so much that i don't know how to properly write about it。 the entire time, i was laughing and blushing and squealing and chanting "nerd stars" in my head。 thinking about this book makes me feel all happy and blushy (that's not even a word, i liked this so much i'm making up words) go read it。 it's been a while since i read a YA romance and liked it this much。 this was so well written, emotionally and comedically。 i enjoyed this so much that i don't know how to properly write about it。 the entire time, i was laughing and blushing and squealing and chanting "nerd stars" in my head。 thinking about this book makes me feel all happy and blushy (that's not even a word, i liked this so much i'm making up words) go read it。 。。。more

3。5 starsThis book was cute! I wasn’t blown away by any means but I was a cute, quick, and enjoyable read。 I think this book was too short for a lot of the plot points to fully come to fruition。 A lot of the time it felt like I was reading the highlight reel of a book and there were parts missing。 Not necessarily integral parts, but just those little bridging moments between time passing? The romance was cute, again wasn’t blown away。 It kind of just was。 I was smiling and it made me happy, but 3。5 starsThis book was cute! 4。5 ✨ I really really try hard to reserve the 5 stars to my all time absolutely favorite books and I’m really picky on that buy SERIOUSLY I LOVE THIS BOOK。 I cried, I laughed, I literally screamed ASDFGHJ in some parts。First of all, I love Bel’s style, she so fashion!!! I think one of my favorite parts of the lecture was trying to imagine her outfits (just like Teo did, lol)。 Also, I’m so happy I’ve been finding more books about women on STEM this year, I really loved going to biology contest on 4。5 ✨ I really really try hard to reserve the 5 stars to my all time absolutely favorite books and I’m really picky on that buy SERIOUSLY I LOVE THIS BOOK。 I cried, I laughed, I literally screamed ASDFGHJ in some parts。First of all, I love Bel’s style, she so fashion!!! I felt like the writing was a bit too messy for me and the book overused parenthesis, sentence breaks, etc, so it was a bit hard to understand。 Other than that, this book was so good。 Bel was a great main character, and I loved everything about her。 She was a bit awkward at first, but that’s just something you learn to love。 I also love how the author showed the experience of women in stem, and the struggle of not being certain of your purpose in life though her。On a completely different note, t I felt like the writing was a bit too messy for me and the book overused parenthesis, sentence breaks, etc, so it was a bit hard to understand。 Other than that, this book was so good。 Bel was a great main character, and I loved everything about her。 She was a bit awkward at first, but that’s just something you learn to love。 I also love how the author showed the experience of women in stem, and the struggle of not being certain of your purpose in life though her。On a completely different note, this book will have you giggling, laughing, or squealing every time you read it (the text messages, the car rides, the secret one on one study sessions, you name it)。 Other great characters and the team environment also makes the book have so much more value。 I also commend the character development of basically everyone in the book。 They learned to grow as a team and trust one another, even if they win or lose。 。。。more
