This book is an absolute page-turner。 Throughout this book， I felt that I was constantly being kept on my toes。 The minute I start to get comfortable with the narrative and think that I am beginning to understand it， we are given an entirely different perspective and I am left to scramble after my thoughts and work on my imagination once again！ With reality and the axis of time being unclear at times， it certainly becomes a challenge at times to try and make sense of what is going on- but that's This book is an absolute page-turner。 Throughout this book， I felt that I was constantly being kept on my toes。 The minute I start to get comfortable with the narrative and think that I am beginning to understand it， we are given an entirely different perspective and I am left to scramble after my thoughts and work on my imagination once again！ With reality and the axis of time being unclear at times， it certainly becomes a challenge at times to try and make sense of what is going on- but that's precisely what makes this book so fun to read！One of the reviews mentioned that Murakami is "a master of making the mundane seem magical， mystical， and alluring" and I think that really sums up his writing style for me！ The writing is really charming， candid and flows really well， leaving me wanting to read more。 The way that the lead characters are developed is also amazing because we get to appreciate the complexity of many of these characters and gain a better understanding of their thought processes and world views as the book progresses （really interesting）！ Murakami also tackles several issues in the book， especially regarding time and memory。 He leaves us with some challenging questions regarding these topics and with so much to unpack and reflect on。 。。。more

feels like i’ve just woken up from the craziest fever dream imaginable to man。 my initial analogy of how i felt when i finished this book in the car is that it reminded me of a really good milkshake。 there’s nothing you can directly pinpoint as what makes the milkshake taste so good - it’s just the way all the ingredients are blended together that works so deliciously well （except in this case the ingredients are leeches， cat guts， kfc and cum）。 the thing about this particular milkshake is that feels like i’ve just woken up from the craziest fever dream imaginable to man。 my initial analogy of how i felt when i finished this book in the car is that it reminded me of a really good milkshake。 there’s nothing you can directly pinpoint as what makes the milkshake taste so good - it’s just the way all the ingredients are blended together that works so deliciously well （except in this case the ingredients are leeches， cat guts， kfc and cum）。 the thing about this particular milkshake is that there’s a few little grainy bits along the way - a bit of cinnamon maybe - that make you stop and think， maybe grimace a little even though you know the cinnamon adds to the flavour？ anyway despite being tinged with typical murakami-esque depictions of women it was deeply emotionally affecting。 the plot was crafted and developed so well with both loosely intertwined narratives completely consuming me。 impeccably written all the way though。 a truly unique experience - i’d definitely like to reread it at some point in my life 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it， click here。 I guess I expected far more from Murakami。 I’ve heard many talk about him as a great author with amazing works and perhaps I chose the wrong one to start with， but Kafka on the Shore wasn’t what I thought it would be。 It was beautifully written in that Murakami is good technically， and I enjoyed many of the passages for this reason。 But overall I felt that the themes in this book were incoherent and confusing。 Memories， time， love， some existentialism etc etc。 there’s so many and they are so ran I guess I expected far more from Murakami。 I’ve heard many talk about him as a great author with amazing works and perhaps I chose the wrong one to start with， but Kafka on the Shore wasn’t what I thought it would be。 It was beautifully written in that Murakami is good technically， and I enjoyed many of the passages for this reason。 But overall I felt that the themes in this book were incoherent and confusing。 Memories， time， love， some existentialism etc etc。 there’s so many and they are so randomly incorporated that I struggle to find something I actually gained from this book。 I did thoroughly enjoyed Hoshino and his small yet very fascinating character arch。 His growth from a meaningless trucker to an revitalized young man who’s， not hungry for， but， more， willing to explore life。 I specifically liked his “a-ha” moment in the cafe and the way the music impacted him， as well as the wisdom he seemed to gain from an unaware Nakata。 Now that I mentioned him I also loved Nakata。 Great character， though you gain more from his interactions with Hoshino and such than you actually do him because he’s a bit dim; a result of his unfortunate accident after WW2？ Kafka Tamura… in my opinion and overly done character。 He’s 15 with the brain of an ancient philosopher who’s at the same time incredibly naive （paradoxically）。 Overall， I didn’t gain much from this book。 It was a book。 I read the book。 And that’s that。 Wouldn’t recommend unless you’re bored and have nothing else to do and want to say you’ve read Murakami。 I hope that Norwegian Wood or 1Q84 is better。 。。。more

I really thought I would love this book （first time reading Murakami）。 It definitely pushed my limits （mostly in a good way）; the metaphysical， the focus on fate and memory， etc。 was all very interesting and different from a lot of what I normally read。 And he really is a beautiful and insightful writer。 However， I did feel like the climax left something to be desired。 Most of the book felt like it was rushing towards something that never transpired。 Also， I hated every scene that was vaguely se I really thought I would love this book （first time reading Murakami）。 It definitely pushed my limits （mostly in a good way）; the metaphysical， the focus on fate and memory， etc。 was all very interesting and different from a lot of what I normally read。 And he really is a beautiful and insightful writer。 However， I did feel like the climax left something to be desired。 Most of the book felt like it was rushing towards something that never transpired。 Also， I hated every scene that was vaguely sexual。 An Oedipus complex is central to this book and one of the protagonists is a 15 year old boy so perhaps some of that was unavoidable， but I was just really uncomfortable with the way sex was written about and don’t know why we needed gratuitous scenes of rape， etc。 Unfortunately those aspects really brought this book down for me。 I want to try another Murakami but also get the sense that the latter critique may be something of a trend with his writing。 。。。more
