Summary

The Kingsley family is practically American royalty, beloved for their military heroics, political service, and unmatched elegance。 When Joseph S。 Kingsley III is born in 1960, he inherits the weight of that legacy。 Growing up with all the Kingsley looks and charisma, Joe should have no problem taking up the mantle after his father’s untimely death。 But he is also a little bit reckless, and can’t seem to figure out how to channel the expectations of an entire country。

No one ever expected anything of Cate, on the other hand。 She, too, grew up in a single-parent household—just her and her mom scraping by in their small apartment。 As a teenager, though, Cate is discovered for her looks。 Modeling may be her only ticket out of the cycle of disappointment that her mother has always inhabited。 Before too long, her face is everywhere, though she is always aware that she’d be a pariah in her social circles if anyone knew her true story。

When Joe and Cate’s paths cross, their connection is instant。 What remains to be seen is whether their relationship will survive the glare of the spotlight that follows Joe everywhere。 And just as they find themselves in the make-or-break moment, the tragedy that seems to run in Joe’s family right alongside all that privilege will repeat itself。

In a beautifully written novel that recaptures a gilded moment in American history, Emily Giffin tells a story of a love that may or may not have the power to transcend circumstances that seem arrayed against it。。。 and the difficulty of finding your way to the place you belong。

Great Emily Giffen book =- was

I'm not a fan of Emily Giffin and her books, but I am weirdly interested in "what if" stories and the John Kennedy and Carolyn Bessette relationship。 This book is a what if version of their lives-Joe is very closely based on John and Cate is more loosely based on Carolyn。 I found myself googling a lot to see what was made up and what might be true! 4。5I really enjoyed this light summer read。 Each chapter alternated between the male and female main characters。 I liked how independent the female main character was and how the male main character really went to bat for her。 I thought the fashion references added a lot and I could definitely see the characters in my mind。 Their romance was fun and I liked how she made him work for it。 I’d give it a 3/5 on the steamy chart。 Themes/talking points: American royalty, domestic abuse, privilege, int 4。5I really enjoyed this light summer read。 Each chapter alternated between the male and female main characters。 I liked how independent the female main character was and how the male main character really went to bat for her。 I thought the fashion references added a lot and I could definitely see the characters in my mind。 Their romance was fun and I liked how she made him work for it。 I’d give it a 3/5 on the steamy chart。 Themes/talking points: American royalty, domestic abuse, privilege, inter-class romance 。。。more

I love the Kennedy family, and I love Emily Giffin, so this was a much anticipated must read for me — and it didn’t disappoint。 I enjoyed how much of the story aligned with true events that followed the lives of JFK Jr。 and Carolyn Bessette, and loved the twist。 This book was my first Goodreads giveaway win! Thank you for the ARC :)

Carol

A well done retelling of the JFK Jr-Carolyn Besset story。

Jenn

I love a good Emily Giffin。。 and this one seems like it might be along the TJR line of historical fiction; a reimagining of the JFK family line。

The perfect summer read。 I sailed through it- it reminded me of TJRs writing style where you just get so engrossed with the characters and their stories。 I hardly even noticed the length of this book and was sad when it ended as I gladly would’ve read hundreds of pages more! I was totally invested in Joe and Cates relationship and I love how it just seemed to grow organically。 Such a beautiful and captivating book。

The upside to a nationwide internet outage was finishing this book! I devoured it。 I don’t know much about the Kennedys which I think was perfect for this book as I wasn’t comparing the fictional story to reality。 I loved the dual POVs and the ending, albeit ‘perfect’, was excellent。

DNF - could not finish。 This book was a poorly disguised rip off of JFK Jr and Carolyn。 Completely ridiculous。 I used to love her books but the last 2 have been “blech”。 I don’t think I will take a chance on a third。

Very much enjoyed Emily Giffin's newest novel, "Meant to Be," in which Cate Cooper pulls herself out of an abusive household, dropping out of high school and becoming a successful model and business woman in her own right, before meeting Joe (i。e。, Joseph S。 Kingsley III), whose family was well-known and beloved for their military heroics and political service, and who she happened to crush on back in her teen years。 Cate's nuanced character felt uncontrived and down-to-earth, and I found myself Very much enjoyed Emily Giffin's newest novel, "Meant to Be," in which Cate Cooper pulls herself out of an abusive household, dropping out of high school and becoming a successful model and business woman in her own right, before meeting Joe (i。e。, Joseph S。 Kingsley III), whose family was well-known and beloved for their military heroics and political service, and who she happened to crush on back in her teen years。 Cate's nuanced character felt uncontrived and down-to-earth, and I found myself rooting for their relationship to succeed through the trials and tribulations of being a "known" or associated with a known, especially when so many aspects of your own history was out of your control and are found lacking by society norms。 。。。more

Such a fun summer read! I had no idea until halfway through that it was loosely based on the Kennedy family, which made me love it even more。

Tammy Daneker

I was so bored with this that I jumped to the end, so really I did not finish。

Merry

only 4 stars cause i don’t like how the author brushed last Cates ED

Mandy Hazen

I love all things Emily Giffin。 This one was a little slow and almost lost me about halfway though - but grabbed me again and kept me through the end。 Not your traditional love story。

Branisha Banks

DNF at 64ish%。 I was into this until Cates bullshit was more than I was willing to continue to read。 I’ll pick this back up in a year or so

Cute beach read!

Swoonworthy! Joe and Cate's love story is the love story of JFK Jr。 and Carolyn Bessette。 I'm grateful for Giffin swapping out the real-life tragic ending for a happy one because there was a moment when I thought this beautiful story would tank。I was 20 years old when JFK Jr。 & Carolyn Bessette came onto the scene and unabashedly followed them ala the tabloids - long before the convenience of real-time stories and images thanks to social media。 They looked amazing together, were style icons, and Swoonworthy! This was a fun re-imagining of JFK, Jr and CBK。 Enjoyed it!

Laurie

Sappy and slightly cheesy, but a good chick-lit read for summer。

I’m usually a fan of Emily Giffin, and while this was a good summer read, it didn’t wasn’t her best。 Based loosely on the tragedy of John Kennedy jr。 and Carolyn Bassett and the “what if” they had met a different fate, it tells the story of Joseph Kingsley III, son of a political dynasty, and his romance with Cate, an aspiring model。 Didn’t have the depth of her previous novels…
