Summary

When a young man is found gruesomely murdered in a London houseboat, it triggers questions about three women who knew him。 Laura is the troubled one-night-stand last seen in the victim’s home。 Carla is his grief-stricken aunt, already mourning the recent death of yet another family member。 And Miriam is the nosy neighbor clearly keeping secrets from the police。 Three women with separate connections to the victim。 Three women who are – for different reasons – simmering with resentment。 Who are, whether they know it or not, burning to right the wrongs done to them。 When it comes to revenge, even good people might be capable of terrible deeds。 How far might any one of them go to find peace? How long can secrets smolder before they explode into flame?

In Hawkins fashion, you are suspicious of everyone throughout the book。 This one reveals itself sooner than her other books, but it’s still a fun read。 I prefer Into the Water from the three books of hers I’ve read。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Enjoyable thriller, but I think the Miriam background story could probably have been cut down。 The multiple mentions of the challenging narrative/timeline structure in Theo’s book annoyed me once I realized that was the author’s structure as well。

Didn’t love it。 Thought some of the writing was weird and hard to follow。 Too many characters with drama to keep up with。 Will give a different Hawkins book a try…

Entirely fine。 Nothing more or less。

Nope。 Don't do it。 A Slow Fire Burning is a giant mess of a book。 It follows a network of interconnected characters all centering around the murder of a young man, David Sutherland, on a house boat in London。 There's Laura, a woman with a history of mental illness who was at the scene the night before, his nosy neighbor Miriam and his aunt and uncle Theo and Carla who have a difficult relationship with his now-deceased mother after a childhood tragedy。 The book constantly jumps around in time, s Nope。 Don't do it。 A Slow Fire Burning is a giant mess of a book。 It follows a network of interconnected characters all centering around the murder of a young man, David Sutherland, on a house boat in London。 There's Laura, a woman with a history of mental illness who was at the scene the night before, his nosy neighbor Miriam and his aunt and uncle Theo and Carla who have a difficult relationship with his now-deceased mother after a childhood tragedy。 The book constantly jumps around in time, slowly building up towards how all of these characters are connected and revealing the depths of their issues, casting doubt on all of their stories。 This certainly sounds promising, and the start where you couldn't trust anyone in the narrative was intriguing, but。。。。。。by the middle of the book I found myself not caring for a single character here except for Laura and her elderly friend Irene。 Everyone else in the story was conniving, untrustworthy and felt distant from the narrator。 And by the time the story started picking up and the twists were revealed, it was a convoluted mess of motives, twists and all sorts of things that just felt irrelevant when you can't seem to find a single reason to give a damn about nearly any character。 This had a lot of promise if it had been structured differently, like with Laura as the only POV but。。。。that's not how it went。 *Spoiler*Also。。。。surprise incest is never great! I just am not a fan! I don't know why people do this! 。。。more

Listened on audio。 I know I’ll be in the minority but I liked this better than Girl on the Train (and also Into the Water)。 I struggled with both of her other books because somehow I always felt like I was in a fog while reading her books。 With Train I thought maybe it was a literary device to make you feel drunk (like the main character) but with the second book I still felt the same way。 This book didn’t have that problem for me thankfully。 This was a mystery but not a thriller because it’s to Listened on audio。 I know I’ll be in the minority but I liked this better than Girl on the Train (and also Into the Water)。 I struggled with both of her other books because somehow I always felt like I was in a fog while reading her books。 With Train I thought maybe it was a literary device to make you feel drunk (like the main character) but with the second book I still felt the same way。 This book didn’t have that problem for me thankfully。 This was a mystery but not a thriller because it’s too slow for that。 I like character driven books so I was definitely enjoying all the back stories throughout。 I loved the connection between Theo and Mariam with their books。 That was really intriguing to me and I thought it was well done - especially at the end。I didn’t predict how it would all pan out so that was a bonus too。 Recommend for people who are ok with violence and descriptions of blood (I almost couldn’t do it!) and for a more slow burn type of mystery。 。。。more

DNF @ p。 143This is very boring。 I feel like Hawkins may have peaked with The Girl on the Train…。which was also her debut so that makes me feel like I can safely give up on her as an author and move on to other things。

Slow, no connection to the characters, really disappointing read。

If I hadn't read The Girl on the Train first, I might have enjoyed this novel better。 The author seemed to lift certain characters from her other book and just give them different names。 The plot was similar, although maybe more predictable this time around。 I won't choose to read another book by Paula Hawkins。 I would like a fresh plot and set of characters。 If I hadn't read The Girl on the Train first, I might have enjoyed this novel better。 The author seemed to lift certain characters from her other book and just give them different names。 The plot was similar, although maybe more predictable this time around。 I won't choose to read another book by Paula Hawkins。 I would like a fresh plot and set of characters。 。。。more

This one was a hard book to read, I’m very disappointed in this book。 It was very repetitive and it dragged。 It’s sad because I was really excited about this one, I m just glad that this wasn’t my first book of this author。

I was interested but not engrossed in this book。 The characters were well developed, I didn’t really understand the purpose of the book chapters inside the book and I’m kind of baffled by the ending。

Fred Kluss

Quite slow and while there were a few twists at the end, I thought it to be a bit dull for my taste。

Fantastic read

It took me a while to get into the story, but I really liked the characters。 I felt it was well written and interesting。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Complicated tale of a man found murdered on a houseboat。 At the heart of the story are two sisters and their relationship after the toddler of one is found dead while in the care of the other。 Lots of red hearings and finger pointing。 If you love a mystery that make you think this book is for you。

Tracey

The brutally murdered body of a man is discovered on a boat。 The suspect is a girl called Laura who was last seen leaving the boat with blood on her。 This starts the story off, dipping back into history and another story book about an abduction and murder。 I found the book light and easy to read

Katie

Fast-paced。 Held my interest。 Only 4 stars because I didn’t love any of the characters (except Irene!) and the ending was meh。

Listened via audiobook and loved it!! Characters were a little confusing at times, but overall loved it!
