Summary

Weary travelers。 You've seen them -- everything they own crammed into their luggage。 Staggering through terminals and hotel lobbies with overstuffed suitcases, trunks, duffels, and backpacks。

Backs ache。 Feet burn。 Eyelids droop。

We've all seen people like that。

At times, we are people like that -- if not with our physical luggage, then at least with our spiritual load。

We all lug loads we were never intended to carry。 Fear。 Worry。 Discontent。 No wonder we get so weary。 We're worn out from carrying that excess baggage。 Wouldn't it be nice to lose some of those bags?

That's the invitation of Max Lucado。 With the Twenty-third Psalm as our guide, let's release some of the burdens we were never intended to bear。

Using these verses as a guide, Max Lucado walks us through a helpful inventory of our burdens。 May God use this Psalm to remind you to release the burdens you were never meant to bear。

I read this back in 2002 and wrote 。。。 "It's the 23rd Psalm。 A good book to learn and understand this part of the Bible - to grow a little with god。 It also contains a "study guide' designed to get you to think and question。" I read this back in 2002 and wrote 。。。 "It's the 23rd Psalm。 A good book to learn and understand this part of the Bible - to grow a little with god。 It also contains a "study guide' designed to get you to think and question。" 。。。more

There is nothing wrong with this book。 It’s not like I think Max Lucado is teaching heretical ideas or something。 He’s just not for me。Reading this reminded me of some of the things that I don’t like about evangelicalism…and specifically evangelical mass market publishing: Christian cliches, simplistic analogies, folksy humor。 I know this is really meaningful and encouraging for a lot of people…but I’m looking for more depth, more nuance。 If you’re the same, I recommend Dallas Willard’s Life Wit There is nothing wrong with this book。 It’s not like I think Max Lucado is teaching heretical ideas or something。 He’s just not for me。Reading this reminded me of some of the things that I don’t like about evangelicalism…and specifically evangelical mass market publishing: Christian cliches, simplistic analogies, folksy humor。 I know this is really meaningful and encouraging for a lot of people…but I’m looking for more depth, more nuance。 If you’re the same, I recommend Dallas Willard’s Life Without Lack, which also explores the promises of Psalm 23。 。。。more

Great Small Group StudyThe discussions were very thought-provoking and many chapters helped you think of letting go of the sack of burdens by letting go or viewing them differently。 I love the study guide that takes you into the word to bring truth into the weekly focus。 Once again, Max Lucado has given us a deeper way to look at issues and draw conclusions based on the word。 I would recommend this for any small group。

Traveling Light is an excellent book by Christian leader Max Lucado。 Lucado’s leadership has always been a quiet, calming balm to any leader。 He is encouraging, and also practical。 What is so helpful here is that he speaks about leadership from a Christian perspective on how we can instill a greater sense of hope, peace, and our reliance on God。 We should not just be doing everything ourselves and relying on our human wisdom。 God's grace, intelligence, and plan for us is much deeper。 Lucado brea Traveling Light is an excellent book by Christian leader Max Lucado。 Lucado’s leadership has always been a quiet, calming balm to any leader。 He is encouraging, and also practical。 What is so helpful here is that he speaks about leadership from a Christian perspective on how we can instill a greater sense of hope, peace, and our reliance on God。 We should not just be doing everything ourselves and relying on our human wisdom。 God's grace, intelligence, and plan for us is much deeper。 Lucado breaks down the book into different areas of ways we can rely on God including tough times in life, such as grief, loss, depression, and instability。 He constantly sources Bible verses as well as helpful tips, based on the Bible。 One of these was very helpful to me on the topic of Grief。 Here he states, biblically backed, that many of us say “I will not be able to handle that time when my spouse dies” or “I will not be able to handle it。” “I will not be able to do this。”But he assures us that through the Bible, it says, “At this time you will have the resources to face it。” This is incredibly reassuring, even if we don't feel prepared, God will get us through it。Lucado also brings up how the only way through these challenging times is to go through them。 We must have that courage to just continually go through the challenge。 So, any challenge we face, we do have to take those human footsteps, to make it through。One of the reasons I admire Max Lucado is because he reveals personal areas that he has had to work on。 For example, he was on his way to a men's retreat。 While he had never been an alcoholic, he had struggled at times with drinking and had become conscious of his temptations。 He then learned to limit his consumption and to watch that this did not become an addiction。 Yet, there were glimpses where the facade was breaking。 On the way to a men's retreat, it was a hot day and he could have gotten water or a soda。 Instead, he camped out of the convenience store, snuck in, bought a beer, and went to a faraway field to drink it。 He then went and spoke at the men's retreat。 The hypocrisy he felt was profound。 He confessed it to the elders and the church leaders who were very forgiving and accommodating。 Then Max Lucado felt he really had to be honest about this and to be very penitent and aware of one's weaknesses。 What a man of courage, to not only reveal this to elders, but to the millions of people who would read his book。He is essentially saying “I'm not perfect。 I struggle as well。” Be honest about your struggles, share them, and do your best to reset in the pathway of God。For these reasons and more, I highly recommend Max Lucado's work。 He's just a star player and showing how a Christian should live with their strengths, joy, sadness, weaknesses, and goodness, all combined。 Congratulations Max Lucado on creating a book that has so positively affected me and millions of others。 Thank you for your honest leadership。 。。。more

Nothing I haven’t already heard before, but always good reminders to have on a daily basis。 Hoping I can remember some of his advice! I’m not sure I liked his sense of humor, but maybe I’ll try another one of his books and see。

Read this book years ago, but is still one of my absolute favorite books。 It helped me through a hard time when what I needed most was to let go and live day by day。 Every chapter is a relatable story that Max Lucado elaborates on。 Every chapter is a new something to let go of in order to travel through life lighter。 It’s my favorite Max Lucado book and I highly recommend it to anyone who is needing help during a tough journey。

Max Lucado is a master story teller。 His lyrical prose and word pictures create vivid images for the reader。 If you feel the weight of the world on your shoulders, this book can help you release the load you have been needlessly carrying。 Traveling light means trusting God with the burdens you were never intended to bear。 Many find themselves encumbered with excessive worry, fear, guilt, discontent, weariness, loneliness, grief, and doubt。 Lucado takes a closer look at Psalm 23。 From David's exp Max Lucado is a master story teller。 His lyrical prose and word pictures create vivid images for the reader。 If you feel the weight of the world on your shoulders, this book can help you release the load you have been needlessly carrying。 Traveling light means trusting God with the burdens you were never intended to bear。 Many find themselves encumbered with excessive worry, fear, guilt, discontent, weariness, loneliness, grief, and doubt。 Lucado takes a closer look at Psalm 23。 From David's experiences as a shepherd, he compares our lives as sheep in need of a shepherd。 Yahweh is unchanging。 What we have in our shepherd is greater than what we do not have in our lives。 The author shares inspiring stories from his own experiences, as well as others to convey the message。 God longs to bring rest to your mind, body, and soul。 After reading this book, I will never look at Psalm 23 the same。 Knowing that God's goodness to provide for me and realizing that his mercy to pardon my transgressions will always pursue me gives me hope in facing an unknown future。 。。。more

Like many Max Lucado's books, this one speaks right to the heart。 He reads the scriptures and breaks each verse down and adds in his own life experiences。 He build a relationship with the reader while sharing his experiences as well as others he has encountered。 Through his experiences he puts into view the working and meaning of scripture。 A lovely read。 Like many Max Lucado's books, this one speaks right to the heart。 He reads the scriptures and breaks each verse down and adds in his own life experiences。 He build a relationship with the reader while sharing his experiences as well as others he has encountered。 Through his experiences he puts into view the working and meaning of scripture。 A lovely read。 。。。more

This was a very interesting book。 God is magical。 He brings me books, people, etc just at the right time。 I picked this book up to help me better understand Psalm 23。 I struggle with the valley of the shadow of death。 I was expecting to learn more about how this Psalm relates to death。 To my surprise this book and this Psalm is not only about the promises of God upon death but how it relates to us in life。 Max Lucado has a talent to transform God's words so everyone can understand。 I highly reco This was a very interesting book。 God is magical。 He brings me books, people, etc just at the right time。 I picked this book up to help me better understand Psalm 23。 I struggle with the valley of the shadow of death。 I was expecting to learn more about how this Psalm relates to death。 To my surprise this book and this Psalm is not only about the promises of God upon death but how it relates to us in life。 Max Lucado has a talent to transform God's words so everyone can understand。 I highly recommend this book。 Psalm 23 is not only for the dying or to be read at a Memorial Service it is for the living! 。。。more

It is amazing the amount of burdens we carry with us every day that hinder a productive life with God。 Pastor Lucado has a way of taking everyday events and thoughts and putting them into a perspective that teaches us how much we keep in the back reaches of our minds without realizing how much damage those thoughts and feelings can pull us down。 Using his own experiences, revealing his frailties helps us overcome the drawbacks of a sinful nature。

"And tomorrow, when out of habit you pick your luggage back up, set it down again。 Set it down again until that sweet day when you find you aren't picking it back up。" This book hit pretty close to home for me - as a minimalist, as a neurotic, as a chronic carrier of shame, as someone with a recently broken heart。 Before I began reading the rest of this book this morning, I had the thought that the past is a heavy burden, and I resolved to carry it alone, but then had the thought, "I don't have "And tomorrow, when out of habit you pick your luggage back up, set it down again。 Set it down again until that sweet day when you find you aren't picking it back up。" This book hit pretty close to home for me - as a minimalist, as a neurotic, as a chronic carrier of shame, as someone with a recently broken heart。 Before I began reading the rest of this book this morning, I had the thought that the past is a heavy burden, and I resolved to carry it alone, but then had the thought, "I don't have to。 Jesus will carry it。" How profound that was, that He has relieved and will relieve me of my burdens, and, though I may pick up my shame over and over again of my own accord, there will always be the reminder waiting: I have been set free。 Notes for Future Chella and Other Interested Parties (Burdens You Don't Need to Carry): -The Burden of a Lesser God-The Burden of Self-Reliance-The Burden of Discontent-The Burden of Weariness-The Burden of Worry-The Burden of Hopelessness-The Burden of Guilt-The Burden of Arrogance-The Burden of the Grave-The Burden of Grief-The Burden of Fear (particularly weighty and insidious for me)-The Burden of Loneliness-The Burden of Shame-The Burden of Disappointment-The Burden of Envy-The Burden of Doubt (this chapter made me weep)-The Burden of Homesickness 。。。more

I read this book a few years ago, but I still remember how incredible this book was。 Max Lucado breaks down Psalm 23 phrase by phrase to give a deeper insight (including historical and biblical context) into what the Lord may be trying to say to His people through this Psalm。 I highly recommend this book for those who want to "travel lightly" through life, but are unsure of how to lay their extra baggage down at the Lord's feet。 I read this book a few years ago, but I still remember how incredible this book was。 Max Lucado breaks down Psalm 23 phrase by phrase to give a deeper insight (including historical and biblical context) into what the Lord may be trying to say to His people through this Psalm。 I highly recommend this book for those who want to "travel lightly" through life, but are unsure of how to lay their extra baggage down at the Lord's feet。 。。。more

I picked this up at a resale store several years ago and finally sat down with it today。 It was a quick read, but the kind of book that could be read slowly and pondered。 There is a built in study guide at the end of the book。 If Psalm 23 has been a favorite, you will likely enjoy Lucado's stories that bring it to life in new ways。 I picked this up at a resale store several years ago and finally sat down with it today。 It was a quick read, but the kind of book that could be read slowly and pondered。 There is a built in study guide at the end of the book。 If Psalm 23 has been a favorite, you will likely enjoy Lucado's stories that bring it to life in new ways。 。。。more

The author uses the text of the 23rd Psalm to show the reader how to get rid of the "luggage" of life, the burdens that weary us and cause us problems and unhappiness: guilt, loneliness, worry, fear, and a host of others。 With humor, yet crystal-clear authority and insight, Lucado speaks straight to the heart of each of these issues that threaten and often ruin our lives。 I'll keep this book close by - I know I'll need it again。 The author uses the text of the 23rd Psalm to show the reader how to get rid of the "luggage" of life, the burdens that weary us and cause us problems and unhappiness: guilt, loneliness, worry, fear, and a host of others。 With humor, yet crystal-clear authority and insight, Lucado speaks straight to the heart of each of these issues that threaten and often ruin our lives。 I'll keep this book close by - I know I'll need it again。 。。。more
