Summary

A new, fully illustrated chapter book series from New York Times–bestselling author Jonathan Auxier!

Welcome to the Fabled Stables, a magical building filled with one-of-a-kind creatures。 Creatures including the Gargantula, the Yawning Abyss, the Hippopotamouse 。 。 。 and Auggie。 Auggie is the only human boy at the Stables, and he takes care of all the other animals。 The Fabled Stables have a mind of their own, and every so often, the building SHAKES and SHUDDERS, TWITCHES and SPUTTERS—it’s making room for a new arrival! It’s Auggie’s job to venture out and rescue a new creature from mortal danger。 But will he be able to complete his mission before it’s too late? With some help from Fen (a literal stick-in-the-mud) and his animal companions, Auggie saves the day and makes a new friend in the process。

I wasn’t super impressed with the characters or the storyline。 The pictures were nice though。 Eliana’s review: “I liked Willa。 She’s blue and sparkly。 Is there another of these books?”

Firstly, this is well under my age, so the four stars is just because it was slightly young and boring for me。 However, it had a good fairy tale plotline so under 9s would enjoy this。 Well written, just a different age than me。

My four-year-old and I both loved this story and read it in one sitting。 He was a little confused at times, but we were caught up in the whimsy and fantasy of it all。 Reminded me a little of the Zoey Sassafras series。

Quick, quirky, yet not distinct。

This is a fun middle grade book for animal-loving kids, and all my kids (ages 2, 5 and 7) loved it。 Also a great option for Princess in Black fans!

Jenna

Beautiful illustrations

Jacquie Brauer

Fun story! Great intro to chapter books for children。

Jennifer

Such a fun book! I can hardly wait to read it to a child who is ready for beginning chapter books!

Kelsey Pray

Simply adorable! My kids loved the vivid pictures and the fun adventure!

Colleen

The kids in my grades 1 & 2 book club rated this a 4。33!

This was a great read-aloud book。 The illustrations were beautiful but we wished the story itself was longer。 The kids and I have too many unanswered questions and we can’t wait to read more books in this series。

Annie

Delightful。 A wonderful little world of magical creatures in a chapter-book volume with the size and number of full-color illustrations you would expect from a Mercy Watson or Princess in Black book。

Nan

Cute story。 I like the colorful artwork, I think it will appeal to kids。 100 page chapter book, apparently meant to be read aloud。 It will fit in my early chapter book section and likely appeal to K and 1st students who want a chapter book but aren’t independent readers。

Terri

My eight year old loved this! Cute little story and colorful illustrations。 I did feel like the ending left us hanging a bit, looking forward to reading the next one。

Nice beginning chapter book。 Lots of illustrations, so the text is not overwhelming。

Read-aloud revival recommendation for books that will interest 4-year olds and 8-year olds。 Can confirm that all 3 enjoyed it。 Cute and quick。

Catharine

A quick read good for grades 2/3 fantasy animal fans。

This is an adorable illustrated chapter book。 I love the idea of all sorts of assorted, interesting fantasy characters。 Their names remind me of the universe of Carry On, so I very much like that。The publisher donated arcs of this book to my Stags Read program。 They will be given to students and distributed to local Little Free Libraries。 This is an adorable illustrated chapter book。 I love the idea of all sorts of assorted, interesting fantasy characters。 Their names remind me of the universe of Carry On, so I very much like that。The publisher donated arcs of this book to my Stags Read program。 They will be given to students and distributed to local Little Free Libraries。 。。。more

Both kids loved this clever and imaginative tale with just a hint of danger。 Fun as a read aloud if you like to do voices。 The illustrations are beautiful and the world-building are pretty great for a short children’s story!

Michelle

The Fabled Stables looks to be an intriguing new series about Auggie, a special boy who loves animals and cares for them in enchanted stables on a magical island。 This book included a fair amount of introduction to their magical world。 I adore the illustrations, bright colors, light text, and simple chapters。 Such an easy and accessible format for new readers! This book is a treasure。 It is a book for children, but Jonathan Auxier is an amazing writer。 It is gripping from the beginning to end and so inventive that is is excellent fantasy。 This is a fine book。

Jill Cd

Cute book for younger readers。
