My partner and I love this book! It's so bright and colourful, innovative presentation of the recipes, and very inspiring to flick through。 We loved the photos with the cute baby hands!! Lots of flexibility to make things vegetarian or vegan, really interesting mix of cuisines (love the Georgian influence from Alice's family, I can't say I've eaten much Georgian food before), and everything we have made from this we have loved。 My partner and I love this book! Well written, inspiring, full of new ideas。 I would not recommend this if you are looking for a "painting by numbers" cookbook。 But if you want new ideas, are not afraid of trying out, changing recipes on the go and experimenting - this is a brilliant book。 I bought it because I wanted to explore new venues and found it rewarding。 Varying from a simple pasta based on cauliflower and asparagus to a brilliant kind of cauliflower tempura。 I served a variant with mango-chutney yesterday at a small p Well written, inspiring, full of new ideas。 I would not recommend this if you are looking for a "painting by numbers" cookbook。 But if you want new ideas, are not afraid of trying out, changing recipes on the go and experimenting - this is a brilliant book。 I bought it because I wanted to explore new venues and found it rewarding。 Varying from a simple pasta based on cauliflower and asparagus to a brilliant kind of cauliflower tempura。 I served a variant with mango-chutney yesterday at a small party and it was the pinnacle of the evening (dinner wise)。 In summary: a beautiful adventurous addition to your more basic cooking book shelve。 。。。more

It is a pretty book with vegetables presented in colour coded sections。 But unfortunately the recipes have many ingredients。。had bought the book because of one of her recipes that I had tried which was simple but unfortunately this was not in the book。 Beware of wasting your time and money。

I've been a disciple of Stephanie Alexander's Cook's Companion ever since I first moved out of college and got sick of eating nothing but white bread and cheap sausages。 I'd drop by the discount greengrocer on my cycle home from work, pick up whatever vegetable seemed the cheapest, and then look up what to do with it in my food bible。 I went from scraping together canned tuna spaghetti bologneses (what was I thinking?!) to all manner of decent eats - stews, roasts, curries, soups, salads - and c I've been a disciple of Stephanie Alexander's Cook's Companion ever since I first moved out of college and got sick of eating nothing but white bread and cheap sausages。 I'd drop by the discount greengrocer on my cycle home from work, pick up whatever vegetable seemed the cheapest, and then look up what to do with it in my food bible。 I went from scraping together canned tuna spaghetti bologneses (what was I thinking?!) to all manner of decent eats - stews, roasts, curries, soups, salads - and competently executing the basics, like french toast, and buttermilk pancakes and mayonnaise。 I'd browse what to cook next while eating my latest project。 It was fun!Over the years, however, I settled into a familiar rotation of meals。 I stopped referring to my companion constantly because I stopped buying 'new' ingredients。 If I saw cheap chorizo, I'd make x, y and z or if I saw cheap eggplant, then I'd do a, b or c。 My everyday repertoire expanded to the point where I no longer needed to challenge myself。 I had fewer failures, but cooking was no longer something I spent much time thinking about, much less dreaming about。That is, until now。 I randomly picked this gift out of a stealing secret santa。。。 and now I'm excited about cooking again。 This book is awesome。 Let me describe just a few of the ways in which it delights my inner chef:1) I love the format of this book。 It has the byline 'a modern kitchen companion', and true to the Stephanie Alexander ancestor, it lays out each vegetable in encyclopaedic format。 While I think ordering by colour is a bit gimmicky (if I have a green capsicum, I must remember that the book files these under red, for example), I love how each vegetable has it's own background, prep and cooking instructions。2) I also enjoy the way this book is written! There are some genuinely terrible puns (not mushroom for error pie, anyone?) which I adore, and while I fear the cultural references will age poorly, they hit my demographic。 I love the friendly tone of the entries, and I just get this feeling that the author is funny and sharp and always on my side。 The photos and artwork are beautiful too。3) But most importantly, the recipes are just fucking /delicious/。 I've made maybe 8 of them so far, and I find the flavours so surprising - I'm cooking with more herbs and spices than I ever have before。 The recipes aren't pretentious (I think one of them uses instant mashed potato!) and they favour flavour instead of sticking slavishly to tradition or trying to be health conscious。 No skimping on butter or salt for me, thank you very much。 Oh yeah, they're all vegetable-oriented without being necessarily vegan or vegetarian - but who cares? If it's tasty, I eat it。 If my grocery bills are smaller because I'm consuming less meat, then this is good。 I find it nice and inclusive that so many of the recipes are gluten-free by default (but damn, gluten-free flour is expensive and I am going to try to substitute normal flour where possible)。 Some criticisms: I've had to adjust some of the recipes when I've used a certain time or temperature but haven't had the described result。 Her oven must be much hotter than mine。 I've had a few moments where the instructions were a bit vague or ambiguous。 When she says a 'medium' sized or 'x number of' vegetables but doesn't give a weight, this has occasionally ended up with me going wildly astray。 But I find that this is over-ridden by the sheer tastiness of the food, and the way this book makes me feel about trying new meals。 Highly recommended。 。。。more
