Summary

INSTANT NATIONAL BESTSELLER

Detective Elise King investigates a man's disappearance in a seaside town where the locals and weekenders are at odds with each other in this suspenseful new novel from the #1 bestselling author of The Widow

Elise King is a successful and ambitious detective--or she was before a medical leave left her unsure if she'd ever return to work。 She now spends most days watching the growing tensions in her small seaside town of Ebbing--the weekenders renovating old bungalows into luxury homes, and the locals resentful of the changes。

Elise can only guess what really happens behind closed doors。 But Dee Eastwood, her house cleaner, often knows。 She's an invisible presence in many of the houses in town, but she sees and hears everything。

The conflicts boil over when a newcomer wants to put the town on the map with a giant music festival, and two teenagers overdose on drugs。 When a man disappears the first night of the festival, Elise is drawn back into her detective work and starts digging for answers。 Ebbing is a small town, but it's full of secrets and hidden connections that run deeper and darker than Elise could have ever imagined。

A thank you to Netgalley for sharing the ARC in exchange for an honest review。I'll start with this: I have enjoyed Barton previous books and won't hesistate to reach for another。 That said, I can't say that I enjoyed this one overall and am a little disappointed by it。 The story itself is promising and while the execution isn't bad, there's something a bit disjointed about it and most characters remain two dimensional rather than being fully fleshed out, which makes it hard not only to connect w A thank you to Netgalley for sharing the ARC in exchange for an honest review。I'll start with this: I have enjoyed Barton previous books and won't hesistate to reach for another。 That said, I can't say that I enjoyed this one overall and am a little disappointed by it。 The story itself is promising and while the execution isn't bad, there's something a bit disjointed about it and most characters remain two dimensional rather than being fully fleshed out, which makes it hard not only to connect with them, but the book itself。 。。。more

Kept my interest but there were a lot of characters and I kept getting confused。

I have read and loved the author’s 3 previous books。 This one was good but could not match the others。 I was always surprised at the plot turns in the first 3 books。I figured this one out very quickly。 Still she writes a good story, worth reading with very good characterization。 I wonder if Elise will start a new series。

I've read Barton's first three novels, "The Widow," "The Child" and "The Suspect" which featured investigative journalist Kate Waters。 Loved them all。 Local Gone Missing's main character is a detective inspector, Elise King。 It takes place in a quiet seaside village in England, but appearances can be deceiving。 Throw in the conflict between the locals and newcomers, and you've got a well plotted, twisty read。 Great cast of characters。 I especially loved reading the interactions between Elise and I've read Barton's first three novels, "The Widow," "The Child" and "The Suspect" which featured investigative journalist Kate Waters。 Loved them all。 Local Gone Missing's main character is a detective inspector, Elise King。 It takes place in a quiet seaside village in England, but appearances can be deceiving。 Throw in the conflict between the locals and newcomers, and you've got a well plotted, twisty read。 Great cast of characters。 I especially loved reading the interactions between Elise and the librarian/amateur sleuth, Ronnie, who insists on helping her solve the mystery。 。。。more

When reading this one you have to pay attention to the plot。 There are quite a lot of characters, and at first I found myself flipping back to figure out who is who, but if you stick with it, it’s really a good read with lots of twists and turns。 You have to follow the threads。

I really enjoyed this one。 It's a clever mix of crime and thriller。 The small town setting was reminiscent of Midsomer Murders and I thought Elise King as the main detective was a brilliant character。The story is told from multiple viewpoints and has a dual timeline。 Despite the many characters and the jumping between past and present the story flowed really naturally and didn't cause any confusion。There are lots of twists and turns, some I saw coming and others I didn't but it's all pulled toge I really enjoyed this one。 It's a clever mix of crime and thriller。 The small town setting was reminiscent of Midsomer Murders and I thought Elise King as the main detective was a brilliant character。The story is told from multiple viewpoints and has a dual timeline。 Despite the many characters and the jumping between past and present the story flowed really naturally and didn't cause any confusion。There are lots of twists and turns, some I saw coming and others I didn't but it's all pulled together really well at the end with no loose ends!I'm hoping this is the start of a DI King series, if so I'll definitely be reading!🌟🌟🌟🌟 from me。 。。。more

Marking so I don’t forget。 Listened for 3 hours。 Way too boring and I just don’t want to listen anymore unfortunately。 DNF

I enjoyed this。 Written in the same style as her other books, which may not appeal to everybody。 Several threads run through this, and lives are picked apart and long forgotten secrets revealed。 A good read。

I agree with another review, I liked the chapters that focused on the detective。 The rest was just confusing and not really very engaging。 Great audio though。 2。5

I usually love this author but this one fell flat for me。 Her others are really good。

This was disappointing and forgettable。 Very convoluted and so many characters that at times I had to stop reading and ask myself if I actually knew the character they were referring to。 I’m fact, I am not even sure if I fully understood the entire plot but I am not interested enough to find out and do a re-read。 Not for me but may be for others。

I really get tired of back and forth in time books these days。。 especially when it gets bogged down with characters that may or may not be important to the story… and that’s where I lost my interest in this book。

Kim

It was OK, readable。 Enjoyed the last 100 pages more than the first 200 or so。 Not as good as I remember her previous novels to be。 However, it had believable twists and turns and the main character, Elise, a cop just getting off leave, was nicely drawn。

This was way too long and way too convoluted。 I wasn't even sure what the story was for awhile。 Festival, Dead Guy, Cleaning Lady? I also had trouble keeping the two time lines straight as the characters were hard to differentiate。 On a side note, I have read books set in England before that have characters starting their sentences with "Er。。" Maybe that is a real thing but it is annoying to read。 This was way too long and way too convoluted。 I wasn't even sure what the story was for awhile。 Festival, Dead Guy, Cleaning Lady? Like reading an episode of a BBC mystery series。 I have to wonder if Barton is not too keen on men。 Almost all the ones in this story are a waste of space。

Solid 3。5 - very good cottage read。

I have read several books by Fiona Barton and have enjoyed them all。 Her books are a procedural type in that the story line and resolving the mystery follow a set path。 Less graphic than most mysteries。

The first few chapters was really good and then I kept feeling confused and lost。 I think it might have had too many points of view。 The storyline did seem good, but this one was just not for me。

His wife Pauline is a shrew, constantly denigrating her husband。 We know she is having an affair with the gardener。 Meanwhile poor Charlie has a grown daughter who is brain damaged to the extent she needs to be in a care home。 He loves his daughter。 Pauline is not Birdie’s mother and she resents the money Charlie spends on her care。 And Charlie has major money problems。 The story bounces backward and forward in time from the characters’ various points of view。 It was difficult, at first, for my Covid-fogged brain to follow。 The author eventually ties all the loose ends together in this part cozy, part police procedural tale。 It kept my interest。 4 stars。 。。。more
