A REESE'S BOOK CLUB PICK

THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

ONE OF THE NEW YORK TIMES BEST THRILLERS OF THE YEAR

"I loved this book。 It gave me the same waves of happiness I get from curling up with a classic Christie。。。The alternating points of view keep you guessing, and guessing wrong。" -- Alex Michaelides, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Silent Patient

Evok[es] the great Agatha Christie classics。。。Pay close attention to seemingly throwaway details about the characters' pasts。 They are all clues。" -- New York Times Book Review

A wedding celebration turns dark and deadly in this deliciously wicked and atmospheric thriller reminiscent of Agatha Christie from the New York Times bestselling author of The Hunting Party。

The bride - The plus one - The best man - The wedding planner - The bridesmaid - The body

On an island off the coast of Ireland, guests gather to celebrate two people joining their lives together as one。 The groom: handsome and charming, a rising television star。 The bride: smart and ambitious, a magazine publisher。 It's a wedding for a magazine, or for a celebrity: the designer dress, the remote location, the luxe party favors, the boutique whiskey。 The cell phone service may be spotty and the waves may be rough, but every detail has been expertly planned and will be expertly executed。

But perfection is for plans, and people are all too human。 As the champagne is popped and the festivities begin, resentments and petty jealousies begin to mingle with the reminiscences and well wishes。 The groomsmen begin the drinking game from their school days。 The bridesmaid not-so-accidentally ruins her dress。 The bride's oldest (male) friend gives an uncomfortably caring toast。

And then someone turns up dead。 Who didn't wish the happy couple well? And perhaps more important, why?

Abby

Good book overall。 Liked the plot twist and howeverything connected with each other。 Beginning washard to get into。

It was a great book at page 220 。。 out of 310。 It was unrealistic due to lack of emotional depth。 I would like to read a book about Alice - the girl who kills herself over revenge porn, something deeper。 It was clever how all the characters were tied to the groom in the end but so silly。

What a pleasant discovery of an author I was unfamiliar with。 Reviews had said her books were in the same category as Agatha Christie, and I'd agree。 I definitely figured out the suspects throughout the text but didn't know who was actually murdered until the end。 Had to look up a few words to translate from the Irish to American English (folly - ornamental building and marquee - canopy / tent), but they were easily figured out。 Great characters that tell the story from their own viewpoint。 I'll What a pleasant discovery of an author I was unfamiliar with。 Reviews had said her books were in the same category as Agatha Christie, and I'd agree。 I definitely figured out the suspects throughout the text but didn't know who was actually murdered until the end。 Had to look up a few words to translate from the Irish to American English (folly - ornamental building and marquee - canopy / tent), but they were easily figured out。 Great characters that tell the story from their own viewpoint。 I'll definitely check out Lucy Foley's other books。 Great beach or summer read。 。。。more

I looove Lucy Foley - such clever writing and character links leading to an unexpected ending!

3。5 The setting of the story is beautifullast 100 pages is where you actually get thrilled and intrigued to know, the ending shocking But the first pages is all about characters, about their life, their own problems and how they know each other。 I had to put this book down so many time because I was not hooked or deeply engaged in it but it was really beautiful to have multiple point of view and how actually all the past ties together I love that。 Overall beautiful book, I did not regret reading 3。5 The setting of the story is beautifullast 100 pages is where you actually get thrilled and intrigued to know, the ending shocking But the first pages is all about characters, about their life, their own problems and how they know each other。 I had to put this book down so many time because I was not hooked or deeply engaged in it but it was really beautiful to have multiple point of view and how actually all the past ties together I love that。 Overall beautiful book, I did not regret reading it or giving it my time。 。。。more

Super slow for 200 pages, but wild twist at the end

Emma Miller

pretty good! not my favorite mystery novel of all time BUT the final 100 pages are brilliant & full of surprises! good beach read。

Gabi Duffel

Finished this in 2 days。 So good and such a good plot twist!

3。75 stars。 Fun to read and follow the mystery, however, the ending was lackluster。

Lori Holtz

Loved the short chapters on the multiple characters。 The author did a great job of building suspense and kept me guessing until the end。

If you’re not okay with waiting for a slow buildup, I would say that this book might not be for you! However, the buildup leads to a brilliant payoff, one that ties up many loose ends and yields a satisfying finish。 I love a good mystery and this one kept me guessing until almost the very end :)

Jensen

3。75, surprised I was able to guess a few things happening but still was so far off on many of the other twists

Angie Dubé

This book was slow until about 75% when it got interesting then ended quickly。 A solid 3。

Being Sherlock Holmes's biggest fan, I adore detective/mystery novels。 When I started this book, I thought it would be similar to Agatha Christie's classic closed room mystery novel on an inhabitable island, AND THEN THERE WERE NONE。 Quite a few similarities existed, and each character had flaws and dark backstories, but the characters weren't likable。 I'd even go as far to say that some were absolute assholes (talking to you, men-who-still-behave-like-demented schoolboys)。 The constant chapter Being Sherlock Holmes's biggest fan, I adore detective/mystery novels。 When I started this book, I thought it would be similar to Agatha Christie's classic closed room mystery novel on an inhabitable island, AND THEN THERE WERE NONE。 Quite a few similarities existed, and each character had flaws and dark backstories, but the characters weren't likable。 I'd even go as far to say that some were absolute assholes (talking to you, men-who-still-behave-like-demented schoolboys)。 The constant chapter switching got to be a bit annoying as well。 That technique is a way to build expense, but too much of ANYTHING is never good。 Some chapters were only 1-2 paragraphs! The story felt disjointed because of the constant switching and the use of 1st-person POV for every character。 One had to suspend her disbelief as well, especially the link between the victim and several wedding party guests。 Too much of a coincidence, IMHO。 It still was a fun read, and I powered through it, but it didn't leave me feeling satisfied at the end。 I just thought "Meh," and moved on。 I don't know if I'll try any of Foley's other novels, and I can't believe this was a 2020 Goodreads winner。 #ohwell 。。。more

Loved it! A real ‘can’t put it down’ lots of characters perspectives and stories。 Only dropped one star due to feeling like some of the ending could have been tied up a little better? But that doesn’t take away from how great this is to read。

I absolutely consumed this book and swept away! The overall plot, timeline, narration, and characters drew me into the story。 The organization and clues had me continually thinking about the crime and potential motives。 I completely see why Foley is compared to Agatha Christie both in content but also style as once we "think" we know the characters then more information is revealed that expands our understanding。I listened to the audiobook and loved the variety of readers。 I appreciated too that I absolutely consumed this book and swept away! Lucy Foley does a masterful job weaving multiple perspectives into a cohesive narrative。 Unlike most thrillers, you don’t actually learn who the victim is until nearly the end, which adds to the rising tension。 Really fun read。

I liked the style of this book being from different point of views。 However, the ending wasn’t as much of a shock as I would have wanted it to be。 Also, it all felt like way too much of a coincidence。

(3。5) It was a little slow to get into for me but the character development was absolutely necessary。 At the climax I was wishing I could be home from work to read more, but that was so short lived。 I really did like it but it just didn’t wow me, maybe because not one ounce of the content pulled on any of my heart strings。 Even in a mindless beach read type book, it’s nice to have some aspects that feel relatable or familiar。 I will say I was surprised at who was killed。 Oh…。and I love when each (3。5) It was a little slow to get into for me but the character development was absolutely necessary。 At the climax I was wishing I could be home from work to read more, but that was so short lived。 I really did like it but it just didn’t wow me, maybe because not one ounce of the content pulled on any of my heart strings。 Even in a mindless beach read type book, it’s nice to have some aspects that feel relatable or familiar。 I will say I was surprised at who was killed。 Oh…。and I love when each chapter is from the perspective of a new character 。。。more

As a fan of the authors first novel “the hunting party” I had high hopes for this and I wasn’t dissapointed。 It had a fairly slow start and I struggled to warm to any of the characters however around a third into the book the writer picks up pace and from there I was hooked。 I thought I had sussed out the ending but I was wrong (which I loved) and the last third of the novel was so thrilling I couldn’t put it down (lots of yawning at my desk today 🤣)

A slow-burn Agatha Christie whodunnit re-make with a tragically semi-predictable ending, “The Guest List” is certainly not for the faint of heart。 Telling the dark, intertwined story of a 48-hour long wedding with flashbacks to good ol’ school days, connections are newly discovered and uncovered, and hatred brews stronger than ever in a small group of people who somehow share a link to someone。 Until the final few pages of the book, the story is told through the POVs of the main characters: the A slow-burn Agatha Christie whodunnit re-make with a tragically semi-predictable ending, “The Guest List” is certainly not for the faint of heart。 Telling the dark, intertwined story of a 48-hour long wedding with flashbacks to good ol’ school days, connections are newly discovered and uncovered, and hatred brews stronger than ever in a small group of people who somehow share a link to someone。 Until the final few pages of the book, the story is told through the POVs of the main characters: the bride, the groom, the bridesmaid and half-sister to the bride, the groom’s best friend, the wedding planner, and lastly, the bride’s best friend’s wife。 Through the semi-unique lens each of these characters have for a group of specific people, the story unfurls at a ridiculously slow pace to be nothing incredibly complicated, but rather, a generic love story with a past, a history, with all of the guests。 Although a novel which could’ve had a lot of potential, it failed to live up to the expectations held for it。 By taking the idea of “And Then There Were None” by Agatha Christie and modernizing it, Lucy Foley created a similar experience, but unfortunately failed to create an ending with a larger impact, especially due to the fact that the story contained themes so serious that it truly was a let-down。 It wonderfully connected the themes, but in the end, the motive was clear, but really, can you call it a motive if the murder was never really planned? ;) 。。。more

Incredibly slow start。 I put the book down months ago and picked it back up。 A lot of interesting twists in the end that make it worth it。 I can’t wait to try another book by this author。
