Summary

The fourth book in the stormlight Archive series, Rhythm of War, marks the eagerly awaited sequel to the #1 New York Times bestselling Oathbringer, from epic fantasy writer Brandon Sanderson。

After forming a coalition of human resistance against the enemy invasion, Dalinar Kholin and his Knights Radiant have spent a year fighting a protracted, brutal war。 Neither side has gained an advantage, and the threat of a betrayal by Dalinar’s crafty ally Taravangian looms over every strategic move。

Now, as new technological discoveries by Navani Kholin’s scholars begin to change the face of the war, the enemy prepares a bold and dangerous operation。 The arms race that follows will challenge the very core of the Radiant ideals, and potentially reveal the secrets of the ancient tower that was once the heart of their strength。

At the same time that Kaladin Stormblessed must come to grips with his changing role within the Knights Radiant, his Windrunners face their own problem: As more and more deadly enemy Fused awaken to wage war, no more honorspren are willing to bond with humans to increase the number of Radiants。 Adolin and Shallan must lead the coalition’s envoy to the honorspren stronghold of Lasting Integrity and either convince the spren to join the cause against the evil god Odium, or personally face the storm of failure。

Such a long book。 Only to have a rushed ending。 Not that I wanted the book to be longer, really。 But the ending was a sore spot, something I've briefly heard others mention for various other reasons as well。 I didn't care too much for Venli, and let my mind drift a little when listening to those parts。 The rest was it's usual exciting。 It's just so massive。 So many storylines all connecting in some way, but so big that it felt a bit overwhelming to me in this volume。 The idea that there are 6 mo Such a long book。 Only to have a rushed ending。 Not that I wanted the book to be longer, really。 But the ending was a sore spot, something I've briefly heard others mention for various other reasons as well。 I didn't care too much for Venli, and let my mind drift a little when listening to those parts。 The rest was it's usual exciting。 It's just so massive。 So many storylines all connecting in some way, but so big that it felt a bit overwhelming to me in this volume。 The idea that there are 6 more books in this series, at least, is daunting。 That's my overall reaction I suppose, after finishing the book - I enjoyed it almost as much as I have for the previous books, but I'm feeling daunted by the increasing scope of the series, and all the reveals that were given here。 。。。more

As expected, another fabulous book。 Things start to click together, yet as things start to make more sense, more questions and mysteries are uncovered。 Though it felt a bit slower paced in the story sometimes, the ending, as expected, had the same intense feelings, the same character development, shifts and revelations。 Seeing this story as it has progressed so much over these 4 books so far has been a thrilling ride, but while the whole story of Roshar keeps you on your toes, I also have to muc As expected, another fabulous book。 Things start to click together, yet as things start to make more sense, more questions and mysteries are uncovered。 Though it felt a bit slower paced in the story sometimes, the ending, as expected, had the same intense feelings, the same character development, shifts and revelations。 Seeing this story as it has progressed so much over these 4 books so far has been a thrilling ride, but while the whole story of Roshar keeps you on your toes, I also have to much invested in the main characters。 Being along on the ride with them on their failings, their challenges and their successes is the real joy and intensity of the books, and this story didn't fail to disappoint。 Then again if you read Sanderson, what else do we expect at this point! 。。。more

The worst one of the series。 I'm so storming sad to write it, as this was so anticipated and most people seem to like it。 It took me six months to read, it became such a chore。 The flashback scenes are usually purposeful, but there were so many of Venli and they never went anywhere???It seemed like nothing *happened* the whole book。 They were all in the same predicament the entire time。 We got very few chapters of Dalinar and when we did, he seemed weaker。 We got very few chapters of Shallan and The worst one of the series。 I'm so storming sad to write it, as this was so anticipated and most people seem to like it。 It took me six months to read, it became such a chore。 The flashback scenes are usually purposeful, but there were so many of Venli and they never went anywhere???It seemed like nothing *happened* the whole book。 They were all in the same predicament the entire time。 We got very few chapters of Dalinar and when we did, he seemed weaker。 We got very few chapters of Shallan and when we did, we had to keep repeating things。 We got waaaaaay too many chapters of Navani and the science and fabrials。 All the different fabrials and forms of light and power were taxing to keep track of and overly complicated。 We get it, Sanderson, you're like really smart。Kaladin though? I found Navani's perspective to bring a fresher look to the series。 I particularly enjoyed all the experiments with the light and how they made slowly progress。 Kaladin continues being incredible as the story progresses。 Looking forward to the fifth instalment of the series。 I found Navani's perspective to bring a fresher look to the series。 I particularly enjoyed all the experiments with the light and how they made slowly progress。 Kaladin continues being incredible as the story progresses。 Looking forward to the fifth instalment of the series。 。。。more

3。5/5Fantastic climax as usual, but more of a slog to get there than is usually the case with Sanderson。

4。5 stars。 There's so much that could be said here, but I'll keep it short。 Maybe in contrast to the MONOLITH I just finished 😂The story is masterfully concocted, as with his others。 I love how feelings for any given character can be fluid, not in a confusing way (Do I like this character?) but in a way you actually watch them grow and develop (I didn't like them but now I do/I loved them but now I hate them) and can know and understand their motivations and how they affect the characters。I have 4。5 stars。 There's so much that could be said here, but I'll keep it short。 Maybe in contrast to the MONOLITH I just finished 😂The story is masterfully concocted, as with his others。 I love how feelings for any given character can be fluid, not in a confusing way (Do I like this character?) but in a way you actually watch them grow and develop (I didn't like them but now I do/I loved them but now I hate them) and can know and understand their motivations and how they affect the characters。I have a love/dislike relationship with these ultimately Cosmere centered volumes。 I love that the story has more intricacies, but also, I don't。 When I can spot the clues/connections, it's fantastic, but they are difficult to spot because there is just SO much information and history being combined here。I will say I am exceedingly glad that I read most of his other works- including Arcanum Unbounded, Elantris and Mistborn- first。 You really start seeing some tie-ins here。 I actually think it might have been helpful to read Warbreaker first as well, but what can be done? I would recommend this course of action to others reading Sanderson's Cosmere works。 。。。more

I honestly didn’t finish this book (3/4ths through) and have no desire to。 I have read most of Sandersons other works but this book was just so bad… It read like a college paper that was trying to extend word count by repeating points over and over and over and… over。 In other words, the pacing sucked。The only characters I wanted to read ended up disappearing for 400 pages。 The new perspectives in this book are really just not interesting。 The same emotional points for 4 books being reused cause I honestly didn’t finish this book (3/4ths through) and have no desire to。 I have read most of Sandersons other works but this book was just so bad… It read like a college paper that was trying to extend word count by repeating points over and over and over and… over。 In other words, the pacing sucked。The only characters I wanted to read ended up disappearing for 400 pages。 The new perspectives in this book are really just not interesting。 The same emotional points for 4 books being reused caused my eyes to skim over paragraphs multiple timesI’m still gonna buy and read book 5 but I gotta be truthful。 I’m okay with watching a couple youtube videos to fill in the gaps and i’m excited for more Cosmere stuff。 Everyone eventually produces a bad book。 。。。more

This was the least compelling book in the series so far, but I still loved seeing the character development of the main cast as well as a handful of new characters who were able to step into the spotlight。 An excellent continuation of the story, but the scenario of the story was bleak and it was challenging to stay motivated to push through to the conclusion。 Excited for the next one!

A few thoughts on this one。 First off, I really enjoyed listening to it, overall。 Made me look forward to commuting。 Having said that, like it's two immediate predecessors, I don't think it attains to the height of Book 1。 A few possible contributing factors:-The cast may be too big。 Not much happens with Edolyn and Shalann (sp。), for example, and it's spread over a lengthy volume。 Boring。 I found myself increasing the playback speed on arcs that I was less interested in。-I didn't really feel li A few thoughts on this one。 First off, I really enjoyed listening to it, overall。 Made me look forward to commuting。 Having said that, like it's two immediate predecessors, I don't think it attains to the height of Book 1。 A few possible contributing factors:-The cast may be too big。 Not much happens with Edolyn and Shalann (sp。), for example, and it's spread over a lengthy volume。 Boring。 I found myself increasing the playback speed on arcs that I was less interested in。-I didn't really feel like the enemy posed much of a threat on a grand scale, especially toward the later chapters。-It felt a little preachy on the "having free will is what it means to be human" front。 Especially when that thought interacts with the idea of ethical pluralism。 Is there universal moral truth or not? If there isn't, then why is it crucial to act "morally" if your choices may be immoral by another value system? To me, the importance of making moral decisions is heightened greatly within the context of a "correct" moral system。 Even if there are multiple viewpoints of what that system is。 Here, the various value systems didn't feel as well-defined/compelling, or maybe there was too many people with the sense of "I don't know what I believe, but free will is important。" I might not be explaining myself well here 🤷🏻‍♂️。 There is little sense of the inherent human sinfulness, which in my belief is more intrinsic to humans than our free will in this post-fall world。-Also, although I appreciated the focus on exploring mental health issues, Shalann's multiple personas talking as though they were different people annoyed me。 -Raboniel is cool。 (Thoughts on her limited to avoid spoilers。) 。。。more

This book was SO much better than the last one。 It only took me about a month and half to finish this book, which was 57 hours long。 I don't know if I mentioned this in my earlier reviews, but this book is narrated by Michael Kramer and Kate Reading。 Fun fact: They are married。 They must really like each other cuz they do long-*ss books。 Imagine Kate really didn't like what Mike made for dinner last night and didn't hide it very well。 Mike goes to bed kind of P。O'd and Kate is pretty freaking hu This book was SO much better than the last one。 It only took me about a month and half to finish this book, which was 57 hours long。 I don't know if I mentioned this in my earlier reviews, but this book is narrated by Michael Kramer and Kate Reading。 Fun fact: They are married。 They must really like each other cuz they do long-*ss books。 Imagine Kate really didn't like what Mike made for dinner last night and didn't hide it very well。 Mike goes to bed kind of P。O'd and Kate is pretty freaking hungry still because Mike kind of blew it on the dumplings。 So she's tossing and turning all night because shes hungry and Mike is salty because he put his heart and soul into that meal and now they have to wake up the next morning and go to work TOGETHER where they are probably cooped up in a small recording studio and Kate is surreptitiously snacking all morning on Chex Mix and Mike is like wtf give me some。 So kudos for them for being able to manage that scenario! My only gripe about this book is they are kind of neutering Shallan, who I personally think is one of the main reasons I got into this series in the first place。 I know when Sanderson is trying to set up a series that will ultimately be 10 books long he needs to introduce a lot of characters。。。just don't forget what got you there。 He did a lot better cutting down on the interludes, which made the book flow a lot better, I thought。 And not too much time was spent in the past。 I am excited to see what book 5 holds and just hope there can be the return of some of the personalities from Bridge 4。 Loved seeing Rlain come into his own in this book and it is nice how Sanderson tries to show all sides of the conflict and tries to bring humanity to the characters。 Next book isn't coming out until 2023 so I'll have to find something to tide me over until then! 。。。more

Really great addition to the story。 All of the character development and world building really comes together in Rhythm of War。 If you enjoyed the rest of the series this is the best yet。

It feels like there was a big effort from Brandon Sanderson to really delve into mental illness for this book。 It had been a factor in previous books, but never to the level of this one。 It all appears to have been handled sensitively and carefully, adding real depth to so many of the characters。 It also never took away from the action and plot, so I have to commend Sanderson for that。I remain in a level of awe at the way Sanderson can craft these stories - the books never really drag, despite t It feels like there was a big effort from Brandon Sanderson to really delve into mental illness for this book。 It had been a factor in previous books, but never to the level of this one。 It all appears to have been handled sensitively and carefully, adding real depth to so many of the characters。 It also never took away from the action and plot, so I have to commend Sanderson for that。I remain in a level of awe at the way Sanderson can craft these stories - the books never really drag, despite their immense length。 An excellent fantasy story - and really intrigued by the sci-fi elements that are starting to creep in。 。。。more

Love Brandon Sanderson and love the Stormlight archive。 This book is a bit of a bust-- more self indulgent, longer, slower, and less happens in more pages than anything I've read by Sanderson so far。 Still had some fun sequences and some world building, and finally a couple things happen in the last 50 pages or so。 3/5 Love Brandon Sanderson and love the Stormlight archive。 This book is a bit of a bust-- more self indulgent, longer, slower, and less happens in more pages than anything I've read by Sanderson so far。 Still had some fun sequences and some world building, and finally a couple things happen in the last 50 pages or so。 3/5 。。。more

The plot gets even deeper in this installment of the series。 We finally start to see much of what is going on in the world from a different perspective。 The list of important characters is becoming so long that I feel I should make notes about them so that I can keep the characters straight when reading。 I wonder if this is why some writers of epic series decide that they should have some characters die, just so they don't have to worry about them any more。 The plot gets even deeper in this installment of the series。 We finally start to see much of what is going on in the world from a different perspective。 The list of important characters is becoming so long that I feel I should make notes about them so that I can keep the characters straight when reading。 I wonder if this is why some writers of epic series decide that they should have some characters die, just so they don't have to worry about them any more。 。。。more

This is probably the best of the 4 currently released books in this series。 Sure, there were about 80 pages going on about fabrials and about Kaladin or something which I skimmed, but in an 1000 page books, there are lulls。 I feel like story-wise this has been a pivotal and enjoyable book。 Why four stars and not five? I just have criticisms about Sanderson's writing in general。 I think he's really awful at naming things in general。 Purelake, gemheart, etc。 I feel like the lack of complexity and This is probably the best of the 4 currently released books in this series。 Sure, there were about 80 pages going on about fabrials and about Kaladin or something which I skimmed, but in an 1000 page books, there are lulls。 I feel like story-wise this has been a pivotal and enjoyable book。 Why four stars and not five? "So it was good someone was there, to help them not feel so alone as it happened。" This book both being my least favourite Stormlight Archives book, and also the one that made me cry the most, is an apt description of the whole experience for me。 Is it a great, amazing book? Almost。My major complaint comes from the pacing issues and characters focused on within Part 3。 Now I've almost never had to force myself to read a Stormlight book, but this specific part of "So it was good someone was there, to help them not feel so alone as it happened。" This book both being my least favourite Stormlight Archives book, and also the one that made me cry the most, is an apt description of the whole experience for me。 Is it a great, amazing book? Almost。My major complaint comes from the pacing issues and characters focused on within Part 3。 Now I've almost never had to force myself to read a Stormlight book, but this specific part of the story was very hard to stay motivated during。 I found the story focus on Venli/Eshonai to be far less interesting than any character focus we've had before, and the Kaladin/Navani sequences were good, but far too slow to keep me engaged when we weren't looking into the past。I think this book just took away, or didn't give enough time to, some of the incredible dynamics we've come to know and love throughout the series。 It focused so very heavily on worldbuilding and plot that at times I feel we lost the fun and the joys of Stormlight Archives。Was it a necessity to cover all of these bases in the leadup to book 5? Probably, but it does mean the reading experience is impacted as a result。 This book makes me really miss the incredible character moments and intimate storytelling that existed in the earlier novels, and while it's still present, it feels a bit less intense here。Overall I still loved it, and this book was a incredible entry for the S。A。 and the cosmere as a whole。 All the reveals, all the plot points, were just incredible and 10/10, it was just the execution and the journey that left me feeling exhausted rather than excited。 I really feel like this is a case of all the correct plot points, but the space between them often left me feeling unengaged。Going into my little opinions on a couple spoilers。。。 Kaladin was amazing, flashback with Tien had me SOBBING。 It was NOT CHILL。 I love him, I love the exploration of his depression。Shallan and Adolin were okay, mostly the same characters we've had before, but not utilised as well as in previous novels。 It sucks that they just got stuffed into Shadesmar (again) for a whole book but what can you do。 Shallan's DID and Adolin/Maya dynamics are great, wish we got more of it though。I don't care very much about Venli, and I think Sanderson really wanted us to。 I think it can still happen, this was just not the way。Dalinar/Jasnah very cool, but hardly saw them。Navani was incredible, show stopping, baddie。 She is such an incredible character, but I had trouble staying invested as she was imprisoned and most chapters surrounding hers was dragging along。 The science was cool, maybe a tiny bit too much discussion about fabrials but whatever。 She is a bad bitch and I love where her character went throughout this book。RIP Teft, but that scene with Moash was so incredibly cool。 Him slashing the Radiant in a coma, then killing Teft and leaving his corpse to turn Kaladin into Odium's weapon, great。 Him getting blinded by Navani, incredible。 He is so evil, I hate him, but he brings out the best in the series。AND FINALLY, we have Odium and Wit。 My god, am I scared after reading the final chapter。 I hope and pray to god that Wit was the one in control of all that。 Also Taravangian into Odium was great, loved his character throughout the series and now he gets to play God for real this time。Ten days。。。。 。。。more
