Summary

The Cthulhu Mythos was H。 P。 Lovecraft's greatest contribution to supernatural literature: a series of stories that evoked cosmic awe and terror through their accounts of incomprehensibly alien monsters and their horrifying incursions into our world。 The Complete Cthulhu Mythos Tales collects 23 of Lovecraft's greatest weird tales, including "The Call of Cthulhu," "The Colour out of Space," "The Dunwich Horror," "The Shadow over Innsmouth," and "The Shadow out of Time。" It also features six collaborative "revisions" through which Lovecraft expanded the scope of his dark mythology。

In these stories, monstrous entities traverse the gulfs of time and space and humankind cowers in fright at the havoc they wreak。 The Complete Cthulhu Mythos Tales is your passport to realms of unimaginable horror。

While at times monotonously repetitive (especially at the end), this shit busted。 The language was beautiful and there were plenty of genuinely eerie moments。 The Colour out of Space and The Mound were two that really stuck out to me。

Lovecraftian HorrorAugust Derleth is a great fan of Lovecraft。 He wrote this book as a tribute to him。Names of locations are written about as though they actually exist。 He also did this for places and things。He did this throughout this book。 And he had characters who appear in a story, show up, again, in other stories。Nearly seven hundred pages of Lovecraftian horror that will put the fear of the Old Ones in you。The stories are all interlocking and that helps make the book more interesting。 Lov Lovecraftian HorrorAugust Derleth is a great fan of Lovecraft。 He wrote this book as a tribute to him。Names of locations are written about as though they actually exist。 He also did this for places and things。He did this throughout this book。 And he had characters who appear in a story, show up, again, in other stories。Nearly seven hundred pages of Lovecraftian horror that will put the fear of the Old Ones in you。The stories are all interlocking and that helps make the book more interesting。 Lovecraft fans will definitely enjoy this book and place it in their Lovecraft collection。 Read it and you’ll see。 。。。more

Damn, that was a slog! I read this collection because though Lovecraft has been on my radar for a while, it seems like recently I kept hearing references to his work, this that and the other being described as "Lovecraftian。" And I'd never read his stuff。 So I did a little research and this collection of his Cthulhu Mythos stories was highly rated。 I have to admit, I don't get it。 OK, some of the ideas were compelling but he flogged them to death。 Here's what I really disliked:- All stories narr Damn, that was a slog! I've got mixed feelings about this one。Some stories were amazing, some were super repetitive and plain boring。。。I hate the fact that he used expressions such as “I would be unable to describe this”, “inexprimable”, “inexplicable” all the time。 Seems like a very easy device to use when you run out of ideas。 At the same time, I find it fascinating that this guy was writing about aliens, the outer space, outwardly gods, the feeling of being small in the universe and what not a hundred years ago! “The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown”。 Starting from this quote, Howard Phillips Lovecraft, introduces to us the principles of the “Cosmic Horror” that is a subgenre of horror that is very influenced by nihilism and pessimism。 It is true that there isn’t an official anthology that collects all the exact stories that makes “The Cthulhu Mythos”。 A point to highlight is that this book is part of the last of the three “The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown”。 Starting from this quote, Howard Phillips Lovecraft, introduces to us the principles of the “Cosmic Horror” that is a subgenre of horror that is very influenced by nihilism and pessimism。 It is true that there isn’t an official anthology that collects all the exact stories that makes “The Cthulhu Mythos”。 A point to highlight is that this book is part of the last of the three stages of lovecraft that belongs to "cosmic horror" or his "mythos work"。 Each story from this anthology has its own plot, however, they all are similar on something。 The fear of the unknown。 It is presented in different ways, from strange creatures, lovecraftian monsters, the fragility of human sanity, the incredible discoveries the characters make, etc。 The stories that I enjoyed most were “The Thing on the Doorstep”, “Pickman’s model”, “Through the Gates of the Silver Key” and “The Nameless City” but I liked the most of the stories。The Tales of the Cthulhu Mythos is a book best known for the story that put the title of this anthology: “The Call of Cthulhu”。 However, the Cthulhu is an important god to the lovecraftian universe but is not the most powerful of them。 This tales by this author evolved the world of horror literature and made a difference in this genre。 H。P Lovecraft influenced other authors of the time and they formed “The Lovecraft Circle” where other authors such as Henry Kuttner, Robert Blotch, Robert Howard etc。 continued to contribute to this great universe of cosmic horror。 We can also find influences in current movies, series and authors such as Stephen King, Neil Gaiman, etc。I recommend this book and this author because he has a great and interesting view about horror and a good prose that makes the reader introduce to this great and interesting universe。 I think that “The Tales of Cthulhu Mythos” is the best way to introduce this author because these stories can help to know the writing style of Lovecraft and make you wonder if you want to continue reading more stories and phases of him。 。。。more

This was my first deep dive into Lovecraftian lore。 I really liked the Mythos and atmosphere that was presented but the writing was poor and the stories were very repetitive。 Also at least half of the stories seemed to set things up and they left me wanting a third act, sometimes even a second act seemed to be missing。
