Summary

In this poignant, empowering picture book debut, a girl and her beloved abuelita lean on each other as they contend with racism while running errands in the city。

Spending time at home with Abuelita means pancakes, puddle-jumping, and nail-painting。 But venturing out into the city is not always as fun。 On the bus and at the grocery store, people are impatient and suspicious—sometimes they even yell。 Sad, angry, and scared, the story’s young narrator decides not to leave home again。。。until a moment of empowerment helps her see the strength she and Abuelita share when they face the world together。 Warm, expressive illustrations by Rafael Mayani highlight the tenderness in Abuelita and the narrator’s relationship。

Just Wow。 Thanks to Lisa Maucione for introducing this book to me。 I picked it up because I thought it would be a lovely feel good story about a grandparent/grandchild relationship。 It is, but it doesn't shy away from darkness either。 A young girl and her abuelita have wonderful times inside, but when they go outside, they experience racism in many different ways。 After one scary incident on the bus, the girl doesn't want to leave the house。 Her abuelita helps her to process the experience until Just Wow。 Thanks to Lisa Maucione for introducing this book to me。 I picked it up because I thought it would be a lovely feel good story about a grandparent/grandchild relationship。 It is, but it doesn't shy away from darkness either。 A young girl and her abuelita have wonderful times inside, but when they go outside, they experience racism in many different ways。 After one scary incident on the bus, the girl doesn't want to leave the house。 Her abuelita helps her to process the experience until she is strong enough to take the bus again。 This book packs an emotional wallup! 。。。more

A sad but hopeful book about an Abuelita and granddaughter facing microaggressions throughout the day。 It's hopeful in the sense that the granddaughter finds the strength to face the racist bus driver, finds enough courage to venture back outside with her grandma, even though she knows they may encounter unkindness。。。but it is realistic and not hopeful in the sense that neither the grocer and/or bus driver experience any personal growth or learn kindness。 It's a tough read but maybe a good one f A sad but hopeful book about an Abuelita and granddaughter facing microaggressions throughout the day。 It's hopeful in the sense that the granddaughter finds the strength to face the racist bus driver, finds enough courage to venture back outside with her grandma, even though she knows they may encounter unkindness。。。but it is realistic and not hopeful in the sense that neither the grocer and/or bus driver experience any personal growth or learn kindness。 It's a tough read but maybe a good one for some littles so they realize they are not alone in their experiences and for others a good read so they can learn kindness and realize some of the challenges others face。 。。。more

Beautiful, vibrant pictures。 This story is infuriating— but, in a good way。 It opened a great discussion with my 5 and 9 year olds tonight。 We talked about how real racism still is, and also how important it is to stand with people being wronged。 Because looking the other way is encouraging perpetration。 Important message。

A thoughtful and thought-provoking story of a child and her abuelita who love doing all sorts of things together, but have to contend with racism and discrimination when they go out to do errands in the city。 The two process what they have experienced in various ways。 This is a great book for discussion, with a lot of opportunity for deepening the reading experience by asking what could make changes on a systemic level to the challenges that the child and her abuelita face。 Themes: Discriminatio A thoughtful and thought-provoking story of a child and her abuelita who love doing all sorts of things together, but have to contend with racism and discrimination when they go out to do errands in the city。 The two process what they have experienced in various ways。 This is a great book for discussion, with a lot of opportunity for deepening the reading experience by asking what could make changes on a systemic level to the challenges that the child and her abuelita face。 Themes: Discrimination, Racism, Transportation, Family, GrandparentsAge range: Kindergarten-Early Elementary 。。。more

This is a book that can be used to show the unkindness that some may show to others。

This book was heartbreaking, and yet also triumphant。 It hurts to read stories like these and yet they are so important to share。 I hope that many young children learn more about racism through stories like these, simply told but still packed with power。

A sad but ultimately hopeful book about a granddaughter and her abuelita who encounter multiple instances of prejudice and suspicion just because of the color of their skin。 An angry bus driver and experiences with other thoughtless people fill the little girl with fear - she never wants to leave the apartment again! Is this a shout-out to younger generations of migrants not willing to be passively put down? Because it felt like it and it is SO EMPOWERING! And not in an aggressive way that our elders might frown upon it; it speaks of strength, finding your own voice, and defending your and your family's dignity with grace and courage。 All showered with the ups-and-downs that the unwavering love between "Abuelita and me" comes with。 5 shining stars! Kind of sad and disturbing。 A little girl and her abuela suffer many indignities from people who don't like abuelita's accent。 It's hard for the girl to deal with people being cruel to the person she loves most in the world。 Would make a great discussion title。 Kind of sad and disturbing。 A little girl and her abuela suffer many indignities from people who don't like abuelita's accent。 It's hard for the girl to deal with people being cruel to the person she loves most in the world。 Would make a great discussion title。 。。。more

The cover and artwork imply a light-hearted story, but this book addresses serious issues of racism, that sadly, too many people experience every day。

I simply cannot decide if this book makes me want to curl up and cry or fills me with seething rage。 Very well done。

This sad story confronts a difficult issue as a girl and her beloved grandmother face suspicion and even yelling when our running errands。 Should they hide inside? Or should they go out and facing whatever they encounter, support each other? Lots of text in a small font, plus the racism issue means that I would recommend this for elementary-aged kids so that adults can talk with them about it。

Thanks to Netgalley and Annick Press for the ARC of this! This was absolutely gorgeous and very emotional。 I was getting choked up reading it aloud to my 5 year old。 I loved that the girl and her Abuelita had such a beautiful, loving relationship, I have a huge soft spot for Grandmas。 I want to make sure my kids can see what racism looks like, and this is an accessible introduction。 I recommend this for all picture book loving kids!

A little girl and her grandmother (aka Abuelita) love each other and have a wonderful relationship。 When they go to town to buy groceries, the girl notices her grandmother is not treated well by some people, and a bus driver yells at them。 Disturbed, she doesn't want to leave the house。The girl thinks those people have forgotten or don't know she has the most wonderful Abuelita in the world。 And if they took the time to listen--the way she does--her grandmother would be easy for them to understa A little girl and her grandmother (aka Abuelita) love each other and have a wonderful relationship。 When they go to town to buy groceries, the girl notices her grandmother is not treated well by some people, and a bus driver yells at them。 Disturbed, she doesn't want to leave the house。The girl thinks those people have forgotten or don't know she has the most wonderful Abuelita in the world。 And if they took the time to listen--the way she does--her grandmother would be easy for them to understand as well。This is a story about family members who work through confusion and sadness, and support each other。 It has a positive message, but could be upsetting for some children。I appreciate that this book addresses how it feels to be treated negatively by strangers。 Many times, I have been treated poorly and even laughed at; considered to be an outsider。 But after my hurt feelings, I realized that the problem was theirs, not mine。 And I stopped looking for approval。 The important thing to remember is that those who mistreat people (whether because afraid, angry, or just indifferent), are living in a world of their own experiences。 Not reality。4/5 Stars Note to publishers:This story could have gone just a little farther, by showing the characters planning for good experiences instead of reacting to strangers。#AbuelitaandMe #NetGalley 。。。more

A girl witnesses the racism toward her and her grandmother when outside the safety of their home。⠀This is my first children’s book review。 I found the pictures to be vibrant and easy to take in, and the words easy enough to understand, although the language could be a bit simpler。 I enjoyed that a story I can relate to is available to share。 It breaks my heart that this even happens in the first place, though。 I wish the victorious moment was more impactful。 Rating: 4/5

I wish we did not need books for children about racism and how to handle it。 Unfortunately, we do。 This book is perfection。 It can help children who experience racism know they are not alone and open the door for discussing their feelings。 It can help children who may not know how racism feels learn to be more empathetic and to do what they can to not be racist。 Highly recommended。This unbiased review is based on a complimentary copy provided by the publisher。

I am reading an ARC from the publisher。 I like the story idea, and the multi-cultural POV and even that there is a very real issue in the book that finds some (even if imperfect) resolution about being ostracized 。 。 。 but there are way too many words, and, IMO, this book has too much going on for a picture book。 Not a good read-aloud。
